      Book Description

This stunning Mediterranean city of Naples is enjoying a newfound self-confidence. Recent years have seen a dramatic reclamation of its heritage, as piazzas that once functioned as car parks have been restored to their original glory in a renewal process that is almost complete. Naples today is once again recognizable as the place that drew the Grand Tourists with its unique combination of outstanding beauty and overtones of mythology. But the bustle, the street life, the numerous cafés, bars, and restaurants remain, and the Time Out Naples guide takes travelers to the best in eating, drinking, and hanging out that the city has to offer. Highlights include the best sailing and diving in the area, an in-depth survey of local food and wine, and a useful guide to the etiquette of Neapolitan shopping. The guide goes beyond the city to explore the best of the Amalfi coast, the town of Sorrento, the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida, and the ancient sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

5 out of 5 stars This is the essential guide book to Naples!.......2005-08-02

This book features all up to date and hard to find information about the area which is one of the most alluring and interesting spots I have ever been. There is plenty of off the beaten track sites to visit as well as great restaurants and bed and breakfasts. It is listed in an easy manner. My only complaint is the cover is a bit
thin in the paper department, curling already when I have had it only a few weeks. But it is sooo worth having if you are planning a trip to Bella Napoli. capri and the Amalfi Coast. Buon Viaggio!

Extensive historical background, which is useful before you get there; but not a good guide for things to do and see or places to eat. Other guides are better for carrying with you for on-the-spot reference, such as where to get a meal near where you are. I'll use it to prepare, but won't be taking it along.

5 out of 5 stars Small book - Big content.......2001-11-17

My friends and I recently returned from Naples and the surrounding area. We used this book and it provided valuable information on everthing from how to get there to what to see when you get there to choice little tidbits such as how to pronounce "Capri". For those of us who enjoy language, there's a glossary of terms that gives some of that extra knowledge that really adds to the enjoyment of exploring a new or even oft-visited area. The book also contains several good maps - even a street index to the Naples map, not always included with guidebook maps. There are also several inserts containing either a story about a historical figure or more in-depth information about a particular point of interest. It's amazing how much information is packed into such a small book. You can visit the region with this book alone and be well-equipped. I have purchased Time-Out magazines in London but I didn't know of the guidebooks until I purchased this one. For my next trip I'll certainly look for another of these guides. Good pictures too!

        Book Description

In the early days of whaling, whales were plentiful and it seemed that they would always fill the sea. When people realized how much money could be made from whales in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, entire species were wiped out in the rush to hunt these gentle and magnificent creatures. This account is an even-handed portrayal of the exciting, grisly, and sometimes profitable business of pelagic whaling, told from the perspective of young whalers through their detailed journal entries and letters. Glossary, bibliography, index.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading.......1999-12-09

I've been reading one chapter a night to my eight year old, and he and I have both loved this book. It discusses the history of whaling, from early humans through modern times. Whenever possible, the author quotes primary sources, including the writings of "cabin boys", the young all-around helpers who served on whaleships. This youthful perspective keeps even an eight year old interested.

Original photographs, boat plans, painting, etchings, and other illustrations are often used to illuminate the main points made in each chapter.

The book strikes a good balance between environmentalism - the fact that many species were brought to the brink of extinction - with economics - the fact that people 100 or 200 years ago needed work and baleen and oil, and whales provided these in abundance.

Anyone young reader with an interest in animals, American history, ships, technology, or whales will likely find this a most enjoyable book to read.

What's a dyed-in-the-wool gardener to do when faced with stubborn Old Man Winter's downright refusal to let much of anything grow? Force it, that's what. Forcing is the art of convincing a bulb, branch, houseplant, or cutting to flower when it would otherwise be dormant. So when the drabness of winter and its attendant exorbitant price for cut flowers hits you, try forcing.

It's not difficult, but it does take some planning and foresight. If you want to force bulbs to flower in February, for instance, you have to order them in late summer so that you can pot them up in the fall. Twigs, on the other hand, are much easier to force: just cut them after six weeks of cold weather, put them in some water, and watch the virtual spring of your warm rooms transform them into leggy, flowering spirea, corylopsis, forsythia, or catkins, for instance. Author Katherine Whiteside explores associated topics such as choosing the best container and presentation within the home, as well as topics only an expert could love ("the narcissus question").

Forcing, Etc. is a good read. It's not a reference book in the truest sense of the word; the lack of an index is at fault there. This doesn't mean that there's not an awful lot of good information here for beginners and adepts, well and entertainingly written. But when you want to check on the fertilizer ratio for your calla lilies, you'll have to page through the entire book to find it (in a very small typeface, too). But with Richard Felber's gorgeous photos on every page, maybe that's not such a bad thing to have to do. --Stefanie Durbin

                Book Description

Now in paperback, Forcing, etc, with 60,000 copies in print, is the well-received guide to indoor, through-the-winter gardening: As beautiful as it is instructive, writes Michael Pollan. Town & Country calls it: Inspiration for lightening up the bleak days of winter . . . Forcing, etc will open up a whole new world beyond paper-whites. After perusing Forcing, etc, even those with the blackest of thumbs will want to try forcing bulbs and spring branches into bloom on a winter windowsill.-Rebecca's Garden.

Written by award-winning author Katherine Whiteside, here is the complete guide to indoor gardening, filled with 125 exquisite full-color photographs. Covering pre-chilling to potting up, putting away and water-forcing, Forcing, etc combines hands-on how-to with an artist's passion for detail to show how to grow and/or force dozens of common and exotic plants: hardy bulbs-crocus, narcissus, muscari, and iris; tender bulbs-oxalis, calla lily, clivia; branches-from apple and apricot to forsythia, moosewood, and quince; and tender plants-fuchsia, coleus, clematis, and scented geraniums. In addition, the author focuses on presentation and display, choosing unexpected containers, and orchestrating an indoor garden for balance of bloom and color.

Well, I youre thinking between this and Piles' History of ID then this is a much better book. Each style is explained with great details, and black and white photos and sketches are really helpful, and in the middle of the book is about a dozen of color photos of interiors.
I used this book a lot for my studies of the history of id.
If you're looking for a book full of photos of interiors and fancy words then just don't bother buying it since you wont find them in this book

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book -Dont miss it.......2003-06-10

This is an outstanding book, with plenty of pictures - great insider material on furniture and architecture. And I already have a design MA with my own firm.

2 out of 5 stars Underwhelming and overpriced.......2002-02-02

The text of this volume is decent and well organized but in the area that most designers are interested in, visual examples, it is sorely lacking. A very minimal section of color photographs (which jump from Roman to the Renaissance. No sign of the Gothic)and a series of low contrast black and white ones are augmented with a series of uninspired drawings. All of this might still be helpful and useful were it not for the price. There are many volumes on furniture and decor that have come on the market recently which are superior in their content and priced more reasonably.

3 out of 5 stars Better for furniture/antiques dealers than designers.......2001-03-27

This book is a good encyclopedia of the history of interior design going back to ancient era- it catalogues the general overview for each period chronologically, explaining the function and materiality of a space or piece of furniture. The book is particularly nice for classifying particular styles of furniture and may be more suited to an antiques dealer or furniture dealer than a professional interior designer. The major problem i have with the book is that most if not all of the photographs are black and white, and it completely skips the modern era of design, pretty much ending with the turn of the 19th century. No mention of my favorites like Mies van der Rohe or Mr. Wright. This absence somehow makes this book seem incomplete.

                                    Book Description

While many people outside India find the images, sounds, and practices of Indian performing arts compelling and endeavor to incorporate them into the "global" repertoire, few are aware of the central role of religious belief and practice in Indian aesthetics. Completing the trilogy that includes Darsan: Seeing the Divine and Mantra: Hearing the Divine in India and America, this volume focuses on how rasa has been applied in a range of Indian performance traditions.

"Rasa" is taste, essence, flavor. How is it possible that a word used to describe a delicious masala can also be used to critique a Bharata Natyam performance? Rasa expresses the primary goals of performing arts in India in all the major literary, philosophical, and aesthetic texts, and it provides the cornerstone of the oral traditions of transmission. It is also essential to the study and production of sculpture, architecture, and painting. Yet its primary referent is cuisine. This book articulates the religious sensibility underlying the traditional performing arts as well as other applications of rasa and examines the relationships between the arts and religion in India today.

                                          Book Description

From a Caste to a Minority explores the complex and changing attitudes held toward blacks by the nation's leading sociologists from 1896 to the end of World War II. It examines how and why sociology transformed itself from a discipline that rationalized caste-like arrangements in the United States to one that actively advocated and supported the full assimilation of Afro-Americans into the American mainstream. The study suggests that the ascendency of assimilationist theory in post-World War II sociology represents the triumph of ideals of black progress and assimilation proposed in American sociological theory since 1896. Despite a capitulation to the forces of racism and reaction before 1911, sociologists eventually developed their discipline into one of the most forward-looking of all the social sciences. Presented in a highly readable, narrative format, the book demonstrates the impact of black sociological thought and discusses the role played by amateur sociology in a discipline increasingly conscious of its professional standing. Changing attitudes toward Afro-Americans against a backdrop of black migration to the North are also explored, thereby linking intellectual and social history. This extensively researched study presents the social scientific discussion of Afro-Americans and race relations from 1896 to 1945 in greater depth than any previous work. It will be a valuable asset to students and scholars of Afro-American history as well as to those interested in the development of the social sciences, and in American intellectual history after 1865.
