A Great Guidebook.......2004-09-21

I recently bought this book for a recent trip to the Pacific Northwest: Portland, Seattle, Vancouver and Whistler. I found this guide to be extremely helpful both before and during my travels. I was impressed that I was able to find information other than the typical, popular tourist attractions in the main parts of each city. I also liked that they highlighted the "bests" of each city, as well as reccommended activities based on your length of stay. I was slightly dissappointed with the lack of information in the "Whistler, BC" and the quality of the maps (only in Black and White, and only a few neighborhoods for each city.) I think these shortcomings are minor, and would highly reccommend it.

i bought this book along with fodor's guide to b and b's in the pacific northwest. this guide is a good one, both for residents who haven't had time to really see the area and for tourists. its the only one of the guidebooks that i browsed that has accurate information on doing a circle tour of the olympic peninsula. and it has a section that recommends itineraries for one, three, and seven days.

Fun and Interesting History.......2003-12-13

This is wonderful book full of first hand accounts of what it was like to be a woman in the old west. Many original and rarely seen pictures of cowgirls at work and with their horses. It can be read in under an hour but is one you will enjoy returning to just for the fun of it!If you are a young girl or woman who loves horses and the history of the old West, you will really enjoy this book!

Old, out of date and a waste of my time.......2000-10-04

This book is NOT new. It's a re-issue of a hardback book with a different cover (possibly so that idiots like me won't recognise it for the same sad book it was a few years ago!)

Many of the sites no longer exist. Most of the design 'concepts' are outdated. The CD-ROM has software from early 1997 which is USELESS.

I've been a web-designer dince 1994 , I saw this book (in it's previous cover) when it first came out. It was of little use and poorly researched and written THEN, it's even WORSE now.

The only people who would find this book interesting would be "web Design Historians" (if there IS such a creature) or the same ill-informed fools who thought "Creating Killer Websites" by David Seigel and "Websites that Work" by Roger Black were "good design books" and NOT two of the most conceited and pointless books on web design yet published.

My final recommendation! - DO NOT buy this book unless you're a "web design historian".

There must be better books on web design..........2000-09-27

Appart being published this year, the book and its content is dated. There are sites up to four (!!!) years old... Sites look heavy and the included CD ROM is almost useless. I thought it contained the sites, but it's just a multimedia version of the book with anything fancy on the multimedia side. I was expecting a much better compilation, specially because of the publishing date. Well, at least it didn't cost me too much. But look for any other book before this. I'll pass it on as soon as I can. But it'll be hard to do so...

This book stinks like kitty litter.......2007-03-29

As a cat lover, with 12 indoor only cats I was excited to read this book. Unfortunately, I ended up irate that this man thinks he knows cats well enough to write about them. He seems to have only lived with them a year and even gave one of his five away at one point. When I take an animal in, it us mine for the lifetime of the animal regardless of behavior or any other problem. I also believe as most intelligent people do that cats should be kept indoors only. Yes, they may get a little bored, but it is the owner's job to find new ways to stimulate them. A beach in New Zealand may be fairly safe for cats, but you never know when they could get into poison or near an animal abuser. If you want to know about the emotional lives of cats just watch and enjoy them.

Not Worth the Buy.......2006-02-21

I've tried to read this book twice and couldn't even get halfway through it each time.

Like someone else mentioned, not everyone has the luxury of living on remote sandy beaches in a foreign country. The way his cats act does not represent the behavior of the majority of the population of cats. And where does this guy get his authority to write a book regarding the emotions of cats? Just because he wrote one about dogs?

Being a licensed veterinary technician working at a feline-only practice, I found this book to be very ignorant of the mind of the cat. It was hard for me to even find a single statement in the portions of the book that I actually read, that applied to more than just his five cats.

Don't waste your money. You will have no better knowledge about the emotions of cats by reading this book.

"The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats," in my opinion is very good. It's interesting. I wish it had gone a little more into emotions and what different ways a cat communicates and what things mean. But overall it was really good. It's nice to see a man who loves cats. I also enjoyed hearing the stories about he and his families cats in New Zeland. I learned a good deal about cats from these books. I have two cats and love them dearly and this book has helped me learn a little more about them. Really good job and a good book for cat lovers.

While reading Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's journey into the feline heart, I became convinced that cat's personalities are as unique as human personalities. Not only will you disagree with some of the conclusions in this book, you will appreciate the uniqueness of your own cat's emotional complexity. My theory is that cats will often respond to their owners in the way the owner responds to them. When you respect an animal and treat them in a loving way, you gain their respect. So, with this said, this book is a journey into the life of cats which may or may not be similar to your own cats. For a start, these cats are allowed out of doors and they have hunting instincts that come into play outdoors. They also seem to be a little wilder than many "apartment" cats.

Most books on cats do lack information on the emotional complexity of cats in general. While they tell you how to care for your cats, they do not always delve into emotional complexity. Sure, we know cats are naturally curious, but do they ever ask for forgiveness? Do they experience regret and guilt? I have seen a cat ask for forgiveness in a way that said: "Can I be invited back into the pride?" So, I think cats do at times feel more emotions than this book discusses.

You can train cats to come when called and teach them to fetch things. The author also talks about cats licking away your tears and this happened to me once. This book enlightened me on the entire "save face" idea. When cats make mistakes or embarrass themselves, they will often lick one of their paws and pretend like nothing happened.

The author adores cats and writes beautifully about his feline friends. He tells stories of walking along the beach his cats, why cats fear cars like they fear the end of their ninth life and why if you punish a cat you will always be feared. Cats will confuse punishment with pure aggression.

The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats is a thought provoking story about Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's experience with his feline companions in New Zealand. The only thing I wished he had included was beautiful pictures of his cats in the middle of the book. There are pictures on the back cover.

Don't waste your time.......2004-11-01

Unfortunately, I did purchase this book as a guide to understanding my cat better. I guess I should have realized it would only help understand the author's cats better. Purely anecdotal accounts, no real expertise or science to his assertions. That may sound like no big deal, but realistically, every cat owner has a cute little story about their cat and an opinion about what they are thinking. So I was hoping this would go beyond his cute little cat stories. Frankly, by the third section, everything he said was running together, as there were no real main points presented. Also, I found it tiring to hear him talk about himself so much. Even his cats don't get full focus in this book, it's mostly him and his swims and walks on the beach. I wanted some depth and got a shallow swim with this one.

World Premiere of Bandanna on 2/25/99 at UT Austin.......1999-02-26

The world premiere of Bandanna at the University of Texas Opera Theatre (Robert DeSimone, Diretor) combined the music of Daron Aric Hagen and words of Paul Muldoon into a two-act opera that reveals the "basic tension between characters who can accept that love is earned or is temporary, and those who demand that love be absolute." The music was wonderful, the scoring/orchestration magnificent. The performance a pleasure. The topic relevent. I hope this text stimulates further performances of the opera.

Very practical.......2000-08-05

I have lived in Florida for five years now, and all my northern approaches to gardening just weren't working. I knew the climate was different and the growing season was different, but until I got this book, I just didn't realize that things are not only different, they are opposite! I have had much success with this book, as it offers basic strategy and lets you take it from there. I believe native and long-time Floridians could also benefit, as the book offers techniques for getting rid of pests that crop up at specific times of the year on specific plants with specific symptoms. It is very thorough, with its month-by-month plans and answers to common questions that have plagued me for the four years before I got the book. Florida gardening is different, a challenge, but not impossible with this guide. I had nearly given up until I got my hands on this. Very practical. I can't say I've had 100 percent growing success, but I'm betting on it this year.

I plan on giving this book to alot of my friends who vacation in Florida. This is not just for Floridians but also for us Northerners who have winter homes in Florida. 1st & 2nd are the same great dance books.......2005-04-25

I have owned the 1st edition since 1997 it is a great easy to read book. I noticed that the 2ns edition was sold out so I contacted the publisher and they said there are plenty of 1st editions available. Order them through at this website and they'll show up very soon. I use them all the time for my beginner students. The font is very large and there is no dance language that can cause confusion to those who have no dance experience! If you understand the process of walking and know what it looks like this book will be very simple to use.

I must admit I chuckle at those other reviewers who dislike this book because there are no pictures. If you look in the mirror and see yourself in the now than watch yourself improve in stature isn't that picture and example enough. I wonder if they have really read this book before casting dispersions. There is another reviewer who says there are only three dances covered while there are actually six. The book is only 10 - 15 percent geared to weddings. But that is important since wedding are the prime reason for students enrolling into a studio. Apart from some temporary fad 90 percent of the calls are wedding related. The same reviewer did not understand why the analogy of lifting a tray was used. The answer is two fold. One, that's the way the man, presents the lady, in the dance frame. Two, when the man lifts his arms with the elbows pointed 45 degrees to the floor he alleviates cramping in the rotator cuff.

I point these things out because I wonder whether some reviewers look for their 15 minutes or even if they have actually read the book at all. The review by the one called "dance reviewer" are the best wherever they appear. Most by teachers are the ones to trust.

In closing this is the best primer and speaks of the most important attributes to successfully partner another in the early stages of the 6 most popular beginner dances.

Nuts & Bolts More Important Than Pictures!.......2004-04-21

Quickstart to Social Dancing is a great book! The contents are so clearly stated, the descriptions and the analogies are so vivid, that pictures are not necessary. This book is about what it takes to dance and what preparations are necessary. The book sets forth some physical challenges to the reader required to achieve the minimum standards of ballroom dancing - basically, how to move with a partner. Believe me you do not need pictures of qualitative movement or standing up straight. I'm quite sure that a picture cannot reveal the amount of floor pressure that is required to establish rhythm - but clear descriptions can. A picture cannot reveal effort or force - but descriptions can.

The book unravels the non-dancers preconceive notions of social dancing and sets the record straight. From there in a wonderfully conceived and remarkably simple cumulative approach the author helps you develop, the basic steps in six major dances in a way you CANNOT MISS! Just get up of your seat and do what the instructions tell you to do. If you have a mirror in your home and a 9 foot by 5 foot area to practice you'll have everything you need to begin a wonderful time with social ballroom dancing. There is also wonderful and indispensable information for those preparing for a future wedding.

I heartily recommend you buy this book. It contents improves any video you may purchase or any group class you may attend.

You've got to be kidding!.......2004-04-19

Although this book is clearly written, it contains no pictures and virtually no diagrams. If you can learn dance steps without pictures and diagrams, more power to you. I found this book to be useless.

The Line of Dance.......2003-09-13

As one insightful reviewer mentioned all of the reviews for this book are uncannily love or hate. Though I have my own opinion of this book, I recognize that another Love-Hate review is not going to help you decide whether or not to spend your money, so I'm going to try to break the division and write an objective review with a neutral star rating.

I believe the strict separation of ratings is due to differing expectations. As a beginner you are looking for a book with easy to follow instructions and patterns on how to make everyone off the dance floor jealous. A CD of appropriate music with someone counting in the background would be nice, perhaps some full scale foot print charts, maybe a pop-up partner if you're single. The beginner, however, has greatly underestimated the complexity of dancing and devotion it takes to become a good dancer.

As an instructor you hope people will read a book that doesn't promise beginning steps in chapter 1, lifts and splits in chapter 2, and have an addendum with costume patterns. You hope the beginner will appreciate that every step in a dance is far more than moving a foot from A to B, and that some people devote their lives to dancing well (Ballroom dancing is now an Olympic Sport to those unaware). If you had your way students would spend their fist month simply standing with a good dance frame and maybe by month two they could take their first step. Instructors sometimes forget, however, the passion and anxiousness of the beginner.

That being said this book offers the beginner basic steps for three dances. Realize, however, that the basic Merengue step is extremely simple, And that the Waltz and Foxtrot steps are nearly identical (because the foxtrot can also be danced in the Waltz box pattern). When I say steps I mean the steps that constitue the most basic single pattern for each dance. This book does not include turns, dips, cuddles, or that thing Patrick Swayze does in "Dirty Dancing".

With the steps it does offer, however, this book attempts to explain them in their most correct execution. It offers many metaphors and illusions for the most simple movements and attempts to write at a level that everyone can comprehend. Some of the content you may find painfully obvious, some of it you may not understand for quite a while. Some of us don't cook and will never have any idea what his point was with the turkey platter.

In terms of physical existence this book is thin with large font. There are no pictures save some clip art quality graphics and the wedding section is probably 1/3 to 1/4 of the book. This is not special wedding dance moves reserved for gowns and tuxedoes, by the way, but rather that wedding planning type thing that seems to occupy future mothers-in-law. There is a handy list of good songs for these steps at the back of the book. Music which most people probably already have in their collection.

I hope this review has helped to bridge the divide for this title. Whether you buy the book or not, however, don't focus to much of your energy on words describing dancing...

Only Hours Away from a Fun Filled Latin/Merengue Night.......2003-03-09

I bought this book based on the strong recommendation from a previous reviewer who heralded joy and success they had dancing the Merengue. They were absolutely on the money!! It was simple, so very simple, to follow the basic body movements with the accommodating and accompanying foot placements. The book was certainly cheaper than even a group class but more importantly much more convenient. The author, Jeff Allen, correctly states in the book, "read my book aloud and you have the feeling of having me right in the room with you." We already owned the all time favorite party song Hot, Hot, Hot, the author suggested to use as our first Merengue and once we caught on the rest of the evening was spent with Merengue and Sangria.
