    Book Description

James Marshall was a typical farm boy with a passion for animals.

Going on to Cornell to become a Veterinarian was a dream that came true.

Life was great, newly married, the starting of a family, and the building of his own practice. What more could he want?

Depressive illness and suicide attempts were not imaginable during the first forty-three years of life. But now the cycle of his life would be complete. He planned to end his life in the very room that he was born in fifty-two years earlier, a victim of depression.

Miraculously he survived a near-fatal gunshot, and finally overcame the depressive illness that clouded his life for twenty-three years.

After finding a cure and renewed energy, Dr. Marshall created the Jim Marshall Farms Foundation, Inc., a place of refuge where those suffering can get away from their troubles and be free. Everyone is greeted with a friendly smile, and the unconditional love that animals provide.

Now, more than ever, Dr. Marshall would like to share his story in hopes to help others and prevent the horrible choices that depressed individuals make.

    This edition on Paris features:
Distinguished writers, such as Mavis Gallant, Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, Herbert Gold, Olivier Bernier, Richard Reeves, Patricia Wells, Catharine Reynolds, and Gerald Asher, who share seductive pieces about Parisian neighborhoods, personalities, the Luxembourg Gardens, Père-Lachaise and other monuments, restaurants and wine bars, le Plan de Paris, and le Beaujolais Nouveau.
Annotated bibliographies for each section with recommendations for related readings.
An A-Z "renseignements pratiques" (practical information) section covering everything from accommodations, marches aux puces (flea markets), and money to telephones, tipping, and the VAT.

Whether it's your first trip or your tenth, the Collected Traveler books are indispensable, and meant to be the first volumes you turn to when planning your journeys.

5 out of 5 stars Love it - much more than a guide book.......2005-09-29

I really love this book and am reading it right now in preparation for my trip to Paris in a few weeks. I like the fact that it tells so much more than where to eat and what to see. It describes the culture of Paris through stories. I wish there was a book like this for every part of the world.

    Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Experiencing Paris beyond the travel guides........2005-08-29

If you're looking for a Paris guidebook with detailed maps, walking tours, recommended hotels and restauraunts, museum hours and prices, Metro information, and foolproof directions to Jim Morrison's grave in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery, read Rick Steve's trusted, five-star travel guide. But if you're curious why Paris is called "The City of Lights," why poets, philosophers, and politicians have revered the River Seine, where to find the perfect baguette, or why God himself would be perfectly happy living in Paris, read Barrie Kerper's anthology. It reveals why Paris is the ultimate European travel destination, and encourages readers to experience Parisian culture on their own, and immerse themselves in Paris beyond the pages of other best-selling travel guides.

Whether you're a seasoned Francophile or planning your first trip to Paris, this book offers illuminating insights into Parisian culture, history, neighborhoods, personalities, gardens, cemeteries and other monuments, restaurants, bohemian bistros and wine bars that make up the City of Lights.

1 out of 5 stars Not as described.......2005-02-11

I thought this book would be chapter legnth stories by people who visited paris. Instead, it is more like a listing of places to stay, places to eat. There were some essays, most a page or two, but they were not helpful. One example of an essay was a professor from New York who wrote how the French are rude. Another 2 page essay was on "cheap places to eat", but the cheapest resturant was over $75.

I want to enjoy my trip, not start out finding things not to like.

4 out of 5 stars A nice book to read before your trip.......2004-06-21

This is a fun book, including, as it does, a series of magazine and newspaper articles on different facets of life and/or visiting in Paris. If you're looking for a guidebook, with maps, and lists and descriptions of highlights to see and instructions on how to get there, hours and prices, this is not the book you are looking for. BUT if you want to get more detailed descriptions of what's only touched on in the guidebooks, or reminiscences, personal essays on experiences, and a sense of the actual flavor of the place, then this is the book for you. There are essays on how the French tie their scarves; on the password you need to buy bread in a French bakery (communication gap: there wasn't one); on the history of the city and why it's called the City of Lights; on the carousels that are found everywhere; and on a multitude of other subjects people wanted to discuss. Will the book help you get around the city if you've never been there before? No. Will it give you an idea of what to look for, enjoy and expect? Definitely.

The one shortcoming I found -- and the reason I've held my rating down to four stars -- is that the book has only a very vague table of contents, and no index. If you want to read about Pere LaChaise Cemetery, for instance, yes, there's an essay in there, but very little help on how to find it in 600 or so pages. The browsing is fine, but if you're looking for something specific, it can be frustrating.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Guide.......2002-06-28

I always have a difficult time finding a travel guide that I like. Some are little more than lists of monuments and other must-see attractions; some are better catagorized as historical surveys of a place. Very few give me a sense of what a place is actually like - and that is the strength of the Collector Traveler, Paris.

This guide takes the unusual route of researching previously published articles and stories, colating them into themes, citing references and listing bibliographies. The editor of the guide, Barrie Kerper, is a keen researcher and for the small price of the guide, you can benefit from her efforts. For instance, besides the usual notations of the famous Michilin starred restaraunts of Paris, there are articles here about the best places to buy bread in the neighborhoods, or the best ice cream. The point is, traveling does not have to be about draining your bank account, but about living like the locals, even if only vicariously.

I am a notorious and obsessive planner; before going on a long-anticipated trip, I start doing my research. I plan site-seeing routes, shopping trips, where to dine, and where to people watch; but what I cannot plan is what the destination will be like, what my response will be to all the scenes around me. The Collected Traveler gives me more insight into the reality of Paris than any I have ever read. And true to form, I am starting to obsess over all the new things I have learned. One thing I know for certain is that this book will travel with me when I go to Paris.

4 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge 8 Years Ago.......2004-08-20

Right on in 1996; eight years ago. But with technologies changing so rapidly, that's a long time without an update. I'd like to hear from Mr. Romano now. I'm receiving a certificate in digital prepress in December. It would be helpful to know where things are now in my chosen field of endeavor and where he thinks they are going.

3 out of 5 stars usefull but outdated.......2003-04-29

    expected:
an up to date explanation of the digital prepress process, tools and applications in simple terms.

    got:
an outdate but thorough explanation of digital prepress written like a stereo manual. Alot of things were left unexplained and the writing was repetitive due to the "poket guide" style i suppose.
While i did learn some tips and got some detail (sometimes much more than i needed) the material is needs alot of updating. Some areas were better written and fully explained than others and the use of diagrams and tables was OK but they did not tie in well with the text..they would just appear.

One other BIG complaint is the horrible quality of the diagrams and the fact that they were all in black and white/greyscale. How can you try to explain color processing and printing using black and white diagrams?

    Bottom line:
may make a good quick reference for older processes, but does not do a great job at emplaining some important stuff.
The author needs to update the material and GET COLOR into the book, even if it's just some pages with color plates. also he needs to use a better drawing program to illustrate points, b/c it looks like he used MS Word's drawing tools.

5 out of 5 stars All what you need to know.......2002-06-09

I started a graphic design Department out of my love for design and printing, but I had no knowledge of the "REAL" Graphic Art Business until I read this Book. It has all the information you need starting from working your files on the computer, how to save them, problems encountered with saving files in the wrong format, as well as information on AM and FM screening, dot gain, banding, exposure,... and all the information one needs to know about the business and ART of Digital printing. If you are a biginner or a professional, this book will satisfy you since it has all the answers to your "UNASWERED" questions. It will guide you through all the process as well as the "SECRETS" of Prepress. This is a MUST READ AND HAVE BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars It covers virtually every aspect of digital prepress process.......1999-02-18

A compact yet weighty volume covering virtually every aspect of the digital prepress process. The author provides an historical base for the latest technologies. This authoritative work, written by renowned expert Frank Romano, provides a clear and understandable treatment of the technology applied to each step in the prepress process.

3 out of 5 stars Useful information, but not always up-to-date..........2003-08-07

I've found this book to be very useful to bring on road trips on the east coast and on the west coast. Having the information of where and when a flea market is taking place all in one place is handy and convenient. The flea markets are broken down by state, and then by city. The larger flea markets have a description of what you can expect to find, types of dealers, size, etc. There also a "phone book listing" after the larger flea markets in a state that are just names, phone numbers, addresses, but no description. So far, most of the flea markets I have looked up and gone to are there. The only problem has been in the descriptions for the larger flea markets: they aren't always on the mark in terms of what you can expect to find. Some of the decriptions are outdated and some are too general leading to disappointment when finally arriving at a new flea market. But overall, for the information (names, dates, locations) this is useful.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guide to Flea Markets.......2001-10-04

Everyone should have this book. This book is the quintessential guide to flea markets. It contains every flea market imaginable around the country. My wife and I are avid collectors and we use it regularly every weekend when we travel the country going to flea markets.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough of a directory for a dealer........1998-06-30

For such a current edition there are so many flea markets that are not listed showing any detail. Most of the flea markets are listed under "other" which only gives name, address and phone number. A dealer needs the detailed information. I have three directories which are 2 to 3 years old which give much more. I thought I would shop for something current. This was my first purchase with Amazon and reluctantly have to return the book and eat the S & H. Oh well, is it back to the local bookstore? I guess it's only fair to give some examples of what's lacking. Washington state: only one market is listed with details (Puget Park); Prosser - that only runs one w/e in Sept; and Tacoma Dome Antique and Collectible Sale is really not a true flea mkt and it only runs three times a year. The two big markets which run year around are listed in "other" giving only address and phone number (Kent[Seattle]and Tacoma {Starlight]) In the chapter for the state of Georgia there are ten markets listed in detail of which four have "antiques" in the flea market name and there are 146 markets listed under "other" which give only name, address and phone number. I can find these shortcomings in any state that I've have worked and glad to comment further at your request.

1 out of 5 stars Not written for North Carolina............2007-03-20

I purchased this book specifically because of the "North Carolina" in the title. However, except for six pages about N. C. frost dates, rain fall and hardiness zones, I've found nothing in this book that is specific to gardening in North Carolina (not to say that it isn't good, basic advice about southern gardening). I feel cheated!
