Zoo Tails written by the most respected and well-known zoo vet
This book is great and it gives you a warm feeling of humanity, exploring insights into the world of a zoo vet. It is both funny, sad, and 100% real life. Oliver Graham-Jones was the first vet to work at the well-known London Zoo in the 1950's. It was a time of great change and developments in animal welfare. During his time at London zoo he helped stop TB, developed the dart gun, and many surgical procedures that are now undertaken by human Doctors today. They including hip implants, heart implants, etc. The book is made up of 26 individual stories that make a larger whole, which makes it ideal for a train, bedtime or bath time reads. It is available (at Amazon)in soft and hard back (Large and small print version)and on audio tape and it was number ten in the best sellers lists last year in the UK. It will make an ideal present for all ages and backgrounds.
The forwards were from Dr Desmond Morris and Sir Patrick Moore, who are Oliver's great friends. If you have any comments on the book please leave your message,
As you might have guessed by now the author is my 83 dear old father who I am very proud. I was involved in some of the original proof reading and have actually read the book many times. However, it is one of those rare books that can be read and re-read.
Have a great read. Best regards

The author's experiences as the chief vet at the London Zoo.......2002-06-03
The author's experiences as the chief vet at the London Zoo began in 1951 with an inventory of sick animals at the zoo. In short time he established the world's first animal hospital and introduced the world to new concepts of veterinary medicine: Zoo Tails surveys his experiences and his unusual patients and treatments, adding a dose of humor to the mix.
wonderfully funny stories told with delightful humour.......2002-03-07
Book Description
Gerald Durrell meets James Herriot. Oliver Graham-Jones recalls his time as the chief vet at London Zoo, and some of the extraordinary animals he met along the way.
Synopsis
In 1951 Oliver Graham Jones was appointed Curator of mammals at London Zoo, becoming Senior Veterinary Officer in 1960, a post he held until his retirement in 1969. This is a collection of tales from his days at the zoo during the 1950s and 1960s.
From the Back Cover
One Puff Adder One antelope One crocodile
This was the list of sick animals presented to Oliver Graham-Jones on his first day as veterinary officer at London Zoo.
It was 1951, and the care of wild animals in zoos was in its infancy. Previously, sick animals had been placed in the hands of their keepers and kept from public view. But Oliver Graham-Jones was to change all this. A pioneer of many of the techniques now used by vets around the worl, he was instrumental in building the first animal hospital and moving London Zoo away from its Victorian past into the high-tech world of modern vetinary medicine.
If a dangerous animal escaped or required urgent medical attention, Oliver was always on hand ready for any eventuality. In Zoo Tails, he tells us about some of the extraordinary animals he looked after: how he anaesthetized, and was chased by, a gorilla; captured an angry polar bear in thick fog; performed a colostomy on a python; and fitted a raven in the Tower of London with a wooden leg.
Filled with wonderfully funny stories, told with delightfully self-deprecating humour, this is a book that will appeal to lovers of animals great and small.
"Zoo Tails"' will raise many a smile and, along the way, a greater appreciation of what it is to play doctor to the most exotic collection of patients in the world.' Desmond Morris

Book Description
The Zoo is a unique, fascinating, and often amusing history of London Zoo, illustrated with over 70 images. London Zoo had its beginnings in 1826 when Sir Stamford Raffles founded the Zoological Society of London. It was to have a number of "celebrity" animals over the years, including a hippopotamus called Obaysch, much visited by Queen Victoria; Winnie, an exceptionally tame bear who gave A.A. Milne the inspiration for Winnie-the-Pooh's name; and Chi-Chi, the Giant panda, who refused to breed but instead made advances to the eminent zoologist, Desmond Morris.

Book Description
Gestalt theory provided the discipline of architecture with several key ideas by which it distinguished the opposition between "figure" and "ground", "field" and "object". These distinctions and the techniques of representation they fostered influenced the development of formal architectural strategies and ultimately the physical form of the contemporary city. In Field Event: Field Space Kevin Rhowbotham sets out a collection of two-and-three dimensional studies in series that describe an architecture and urbanism that proceeds from the "ground" or "field" pole of the Gestalt opposition. Field Event: Field Space follows on Rhowbotham's Form to Programme (also Black Dog Publishing), taking further his ideas for a critically engaged and responsible architecture and pursuing them here in more detail, that is, in the specific context of the urbanisms of the former Eastern Block states and their regions.
Customer Reviews:
normative assasign; speculation breeds anew .......2005-01-31
Rhowbotham has posited critical, thought provoking ideas for over a century now. In the UK, his work has contributed to the discourse, testing and expanding the limits of architecture through works such as this. In a library of precise instruments, Field Event/Field Space builds on the capacity to go beyond the limits and truely dream of what architecture could be... this is how architecture advances.
Pretentious but thought provoking opus.......1999-09-09
As a 'paper architect' Rhowbotham has the freedom to desert the real world, and certainly revels in doing just that in this provocative but ultimately dissatisfying book. Using images produced by his students, the author champions a way of thinking which probably has some merit. However, his use of language is so complex as to defeat comprehension much of the time. Rhowbotham sees himself as a leader of the avant garde, but this book does little to advance his claim and is a missed opportunity for us to learn about an obviously talented individual.
Book Description
Cats are wonderful companions, but when they misbehave it can be challenging, if not outright difficult, to successfully treat the behavior problem in order to restore feline harmony to the home once again. In Cats on the Counter Dr. Larry Lachman uses his unique approaches, borrowed from human therapy, to analyze what makes kitty tick, and what happens when his behavior gets out of control.Using a case-by-case format, behaviorist Lachman and journalist Frank Mickadeit deal with common problems such as clawing furniture, refusing to use the litterbox or spray marking in the house, fussy eating, and fighting with other cats.Cats on the Counter is filled with fascinating stories, excellent advice, and empathy for both misbehaving pets and their long-suffering people.Other topics include: The Freudian Feline and Family Therapy: cat personality and structural family systems therapy The Jekyll Hyde Kitty: cat aggression Kitty Prozac: preserving your cat's mental health Ailurophobia: the fear of cats and how to treat it Kidproofing your Cat: teaching your children how to care for your cat Lassie Meets Morris/Morris Meets Simba: introducing dogs to cats and cats to cats The Final Feline Moment: pet loss, grief and how to say goodbye "Holy Cats Batman!": Kitty ESP, catnip treats, and afterthoughts

Customer Reviews:
Cats on the counter?? Give 'em a treat! or a cat condo.......2002-05-18
Cats on the Counter takes a serious approach to Cat Therapy. There are many topics discussed here that many a cat owner will want to read about and find how these 'cat psychologists' helped fix problematic or 'bad behaviour' of many a house cat.
If you never owned a cat before this book would be very insightful, but not as an end-all to any confusion or problem you are having with your cat. If you ARE a long-time cat owner, there are just a few gems here and after quickly reading the book you may set it down and decide like I did, that you really didn't find any amazing revelations...
Or you may decide that you've become paranoid with worry over something they say in the book which is quite normal behavior for a cat and they just don't seem to get that across.
Read it? Yes. Believe it all?? No.
Running a clean cat house........2001-12-19
Finally, a book that acknowledges and addresses the most common of all cat problems, especially in multiple-feline households: Tabitha's (and Sylvester's and Eliot's) "uncivilized" avoidance of the litter box. The author addresses both physical and psychological problems (both the cats' and owners') and gives much helpful advice (put tin foil over the scene of the crime, spray it with citrus scents, put Cleopatra's food dish close by (since's she's far too civilized to want her dining table next to the "men's room"), and address Morris' attacks of anxiety with generous doses of reassuring countermeasures.
Admittedly, much of the information I had sort of intuited. But this is no novelty book about problems that to cat lovers are no laughing matter. It's both eminently readable and practical. I only wish I'd had a copy earlier to give to a friend who brought his adorable little stray to the pound when she began soiling his carpet.
Learn something about yourself and Your Cat.......2001-07-28
I bought this book because I was having some problems with my cat.I ended up learning more about myself. There isnt anything I can put in this review that people have not already said.If you want to learn more about your feline, and a little about what makes you both tick then purchase this book. You wont be sorry..
Excellent help for any cat's human.......2001-03-30
A well organized book that explains what is going through your cat's mind. Too often we believe that the cats in our lives think the same way we do and this book has a great way of getting the humans to think like their cats. I currently share my home with two Russian Blue kittens and this book has explained most of their antics. It also helped solve a problem that was frustrating them and me. Get the book, your cat will thank you.
Cats On The Counter.......2000-12-17
I have already bought extra copies of this wonderful book for pet lovers I care about. Dr. Lachman covers every possible scenerio and explains in understandable language, ways to correct every day problems as well as unusual problems. His sense of humor makes the book "reader friendly" and his background in clinical psychology adds a different dimension, involving the whole family. Both Dr. Lachman and journalist, Frank Mickadeit, have successfully put together a delightful teaching guide for cat owners, from the novice to the pro.

Customer Reviews:
expert opinion.......2000-07-13
Great value but seriously dated. Outdoor lighting has gone through a revolution since 1984. The market is now filled to bursting with manufacturer's innovations including the adoption of low voltage halogen lamps (particularly the MR-16) in place of the old automotive-type 12v lamps. Still a good overview of both 120v and 12v systems and the price can't be beat. I've given dozens of copies away to clients over the years. Deserves an update. Ortho, are you listening?
How to design and install outdoor lighting........2000-04-13
This book was marvelous! It gave me some great ideas on how to save time and money. I have always wanted to try and install a unique lighting arrangement at the front and the back of my home, but I was very leery about the expense I would incur and the knowledge to "go ahead and try that, any way". I truly think this book is worth every dollar. You will not be disappointed......

Although countless books have been written about the Civil War, the role of black troops has been consistently underrepresented until recently. Nearly 180,000 of them fought--mostly for the North, but a handful even took up arms for the slaveholding South. Many wanted to serve at the start of the conflict, but a variety of factors kept them on the sidelines. Until Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, many Union leaders--including the president--held that the war was not about slavery. Racist views caused some to question further the value of black soldiers; there was also genuine concern about how Confederates would treat captured blacks.
But, as Noah Andre Trudeau reveals, black soldiers demonstrated bravery and professionalism from the moment they suited up. He recounts well-known events, such as the 54th Massachusetts' attack on Fort Wagner, as well as less familiar ones, such as blacks' involvement in the war's last directed combat one month after Lee's surrender. There were atrocities, too: in 1864, Confederates slaughtered black prisoners of war at Fort Pillow (Southern historians once disputed this brutal act of cold-blooded murder, but most scholars accept it as true today). Although Trudeau sometimes sacrifices his narrative drive to excessive detail, Like Men of War remains a compelling book full of strong battle scenes. --John J. Miller

Customer Reviews:
A needed history.......2006-06-30
"Like Men of War" has never received the exposure that it should have or I feel is entitled to. Trudeau is a prize winning Civil War author, who tackled some obscure subjects. We benefit from this by seeing parts of the war that just do not coverage. "Like Men of War" is an excellent history of the USCT, its' development and battles. This is not a small book but it reads well. A small book could not do the USCT justice.
I do not know if it is possible to understand the American Civil War or Black History without reading this book.
A Great Start!.......2005-10-19
This book offers a history lesson of the Negro within the ranks of our great military, some ver positive and some very negative. It is well written and presents a good picture of the civil war and fighting as a black soldier. As a retired military officer, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and would like to see more research in this area.
Per Mr. Ford's (a write-in) comments on black soldiers and their inability to stand and fight, I will offer the following comments:
Some of the most important tenants in producing successful soldiers are training, discipline, leadership and morale. Not making excuses for any soldier of any racial background who flee any battlefield (or Mr. Fords comments), I think that if one properly researches the history of the black soldier during the civil war, one would find that they were not in many instances very well trained, disciplined, nor led. There primary function was to perform menial duties (grave diggers, personal aides, and other non combat related duties). In addition, to many white officers, it was considered a slap in the face to command black troops. So I oft wonder who trained them and how creditable was the training? In addition, who led these men and what were their qualifications to lead?
Although not a very appeasing statement, but American soldiers throughout history have been routed on the battlefield. This is demonstrated throughout the Civil War by both Union and Confederate soldiers. During the First Battle of Manassas, union soldiers ran after being routed by confederate forces. Also, during the battle at Gettysburg confederate soldiers fled the battlefield in the face of adversity and in some cases after poor leadership decisions.
More recently, American soldiers were routed during the Africa Campaign of WWII and also during Korea where many American soldiers fled the battlefield in the face of overwhelming odds, lack of leadership, proper training, decipline, morale, and proper logistics.
Although Mr. Ford commentary is truly eloquent, he should do a better job researching and clearly presenting the facts.
Military history of black troops in Civil War.......2003-11-01
This proves to be quite an interesting book about the black troops during the Civil War. Its definitely is a military history of those troops instead of social or political history. The author appears to know his stuff and I supposed for many neo-Confederates out there, this book will sound very politically incorrect since it shows the brave soldiers of the south murdering defenseless black POWs after some battles. Of course, I am sure the black troops did some paid back as well which in the face of war, was only proper. This seem to distract many readers but overall, this book is about the black troops of the war and how they fought, performed and conducted themselves. All was not glory for them but in hindsight, they did quite well considering the situation they were in.
Good, sprawling account of the USCT.......2002-07-11
"Like Men of War" is a good book that details the overlooked exploits the United States Colored Troops from the Civil War. Most battles and skirmishes in which black troops took part are mentioned here. The book's only faults are its ponderous length, its discounting of massacres committed by the U.S.C.T. against Confederates, and its discounting of the contributions of blacks to the Southern cause. (Unknown to many, there were blacks who sided with the CSA and did shoulder arms for it.) Otherwise, this book is good primer on a part of the Union army that at the end of the war was 10% of the Union's total force.
Overwelmed! Could not put it down...............2001-08-26
Your knowlege of the Civil war will never be complete without reading this book. This book takes you there........
