compact field guide packed with info and pics.......2001-06-26

Covering the frogs of the entire comtinent, this book is surpisingly compact (great for taking in the field) yet packs in the information and photographs! I found it extremely helpful in the field as there are often several photographs of each species- which helps in identification of species often variable in appearance throughout their range.Great book, containing all the usual field guide info and more!

An good alternative to Lonely Planet.......2005-09-03

Normally, I strictly stick to Lonely Planet guidebooks when buying for my travels, but for my recent trip to Beijing, I made an impulse decision to buy this Insight Guide to accompany the LP City guide I had already purchased. I was pleasantly surprised at just how good the Insight guide was.

Illustrated in full colour throughout, the book gives the usual history of the capital of China, as well as sight details of all the major sights in Beijing and the surrounding vicinity, including of course the Ming Tombs and the Great Wall. However, I don't think the book lists quite as much activities and sights as the LP book, but for short term visitors I don't think this would be much of a problem. Usually when travelling I struggle to do even a quarter of the activities and sights that are listed in guidebooks. I note that the maps are quite good, a little better for detail than the maps found in the LP book.

In a neat touch, it also includes a seperate map of resturants in a little pocket on the inside back cover. Structurally, the book is very sound, with a good tough binding to cope with the usual rough treatment that travel accords guidebooks. It even has a piece of cardboard designed to fit around the pocket holding the resturant map on the inside back cover.

This guide is recommended as an alternative to the Lonely Planet book - it helps that this edition of the Insight guide is 6 months newer, and a little cheaper, than the equivalent LP edition for those you note such things. But guidebooks are out of date the moment they get printed, particularly for a city such as Beijing which is rapidly developing for the Olympics in 2008.

If you are planning to visit Beijing in the next few months, be aware that a lot of the major sights such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven are under restoration (for the Olympics), with scaffolding to be found in abundance. Some portions of the Forbidden City were closed off when I visited in July.

Insight's City Guides combine stunning photography with literate text and a smattering of basic travel information. Vivid guide to Beijing.......2002-11-20

I was impressed by the vibrant photos and informative commentary and bought this Insight Guide before my second visit to Beijing.
I realized soon afterwards that while this book makes for captivating reading, it's really not that useful for planning activities and day-to-day getting about. There are no Chinese characters given for most place names and the romanization of names and addresses isn't pinyin, so you can't be sure how words are pronounced. This is a great book for background reading and vivid photographs, but you can't get by on this book alone once you're actually on your trip.

Good at giving info and pictures of Beijing.......2002-10-23

This book is very good in the sense that it has many detailed pictures of Beijing and provides lots of info about the city's busy lifestyle. It's many sections detail the history of the city, places to visit, cuisine, excursions outside of Beijing, maps, etc.

However, I wouldn't recommend it is as a sole travel guide to use while traveling in China. Mainly because it doesn't list enough detail about each site. It would be a nice supplement to a detailed Guidebook such as Fodors -China. This book gives good detailed insight and pictures of the city's highlights only, but doesn't provide enough of the city's numerous sites to see or resturaunts, etc and not much info is given on the hours of each site as well.

Overall, it's a great book for learning about Beijing's main scenic sites, culture and a little about the history. It provides many nice pictures and maps too. However, it is not really a guidebook to use solely while traveling there.

Nice compact travel guide for use when visiting Beijing.......2002-10-23

I found this book quite good for general info about places to visit in Beijing. Beijing a little over 1/2 inch thick, it is quite thin. It primarily lists the 10 main sites to visit in Beijing. For each spot it lists quite a bit of info, history, pictures, operating hours, etc. It also lists what is nearby to visit each of the 10 sites, whether it be shopping centers or resturaunts.

In addition to the 10 major scenic sites, it also has a section called 'excursions' for detailing where to go outside of Beijing for nearby excursions, such as, the great wall, ming tombs, chengde, etc. It also has sections for resturaunts, nightlife, shopping, leisure activities, history, general everyday use info, getting around etc.

Overall, it is a good bare-bones book for use when going to Beijing. It is not as thorough as other guidebooks for example, Fodors china. But considering the small size of the book, it obviously can't go into tremendous detail about such a large and exciting city!

Designers need more responsibility.......2006-01-15

I got this book hoping it would shed more light on an issue I find very pressing within the design community: social responsibility. Is it important for the designer to know his/her great poster that helped make a Hollywood movie into a blockbuster also helped clear cut a forest killing an ecosystem for numerous species of wildlife? Is it important for a designer to only do work for companies that match their own morals and ethics? The book touches on the latter topic in a couple essays but largely provides a number of pieces of writing with good intentions but with no actual "next steps" to achieve more fruitful results. Desigers have to eat, so blowing off huge $$ tobacco ad campaigns can seem ridiculous. However by making social responsibility a key point of dialogue in the education of the designer, one could see a more responsible result in the business world. Maybe designers could receive the respect they deserve if they actually stood for something besides edgy looking websites and whatnot. Anyway, the book wasn't all bad. Its a good start to an important conversation... so three stars!

Social Responsibility.......2004-10-28

This book is incredible. I have only read the first 20 pages and I think it should be a mandatory read for anyone in the design industry. It is informative on specific ethical issues a designer faces and it allows for varying perspectives on the topics in the book.

Great for a student, teacher, or anyone within the design realm.

Dave Vogler's essay is hilarious!.......2003-09-03

Designer David Vogler always contributes to these design books churned out by Mr. Heller. And once again, Vogler has cooked up a hilarious editorial that thumbs it's nose at the industry while making valid observations. This is worth the cover price alone. My staff laffed out loud.

Very good basic information on garter snake care.......2001-11-07

A book on the captive care of garter snakes for beginners has been badly needed for quite some time, and this excellent little book fills that need very nicely indeed. While it does not provide the level of information that serious garter snake hobbyists would like, and could be more precise in terms of diet and the unique requirements of some species, that sort of detail would be inappropriate in a beginner's guide like this one. It sets out the basic requirements (feeding, caging, health) that any snake keeper just starting out is going to need to know. I breed garter snakes myself and am very happy that I can now refer my customers, particularly the younger ones, to a book that answers so many of their questions.

This is not the burning bush.......2004-11-20

Look I stipulate that this is most likely the best book currently on tea caddies and box's and such, but these reviews are so gushing. This book is not prefect, the font is poor and it is overpriced at 90.00 U.S. I think it is well worth 50.00 U.S., but for 90.00 I expect more pages and better quality. I was expecting the Holy Grail when I ordered this book, the reviews where hailing this as the burning bush; what I got was a good book, a very good book on tea caddies and box's, but not the end all be all. If you love tea caddies and such you will immediately enjoy this book, but the sticker shock may take a bit longer to get over.

Novice and Expert alike.......2003-10-09

One does not have to be an expert to love this book. It is a treasure trove of information on all kinds of English boxes from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Packed with photographs and intelligent text, it is simply the best, most informative, most comprehensive book on the subject. It's easy to tell the writers are not only experts with vast experience but lovers of these boxes too.
I'm particularly interested in writing boxes, and I could wish for more chapters on these, but that is purely out of a sense of greed. The whole book is fascinating, whether one is browsing or studying. Thanks.

Keep your weekends manageable!.......2003-07-30

Already familiar with his weekend radio show, I bought this book. Now, instead of wondering how to work with my lawn, I now turn to this book. It saves me many a trip to the local nursery. There are scores of answers for many of the questions for me, the average gardener. My azaleas are thriving, a mountain I never expected to climb.

With regards to the last review about organic gardening, Sperry uses organic solutions when it is indicated, but makes no special effort to employ them. The non-organic solutions he recommends are safe according to the research he cites and that is good enough for me.

This is the standard advice given by an author who is not that concerned with the environment. He uses and recommends too many chemical solutions to our gardening problems. However, I do own this book because it does give some expert advise on gardening in Texas, if you don't use his chemical approach. Good maintainance tips and schedules.

Are you a home gardener?.......2000-05-22

Excellent book for anyone who keeps a lawn, has any landscaping and/or does some gardening. In other words, for anyone who has a home. Almost all of your questions are addressed in this book. It will save you many trips to your nursery and make the trips you do make much more productive. I'm buying more copies to use as gifts.

African-American Concert Dance significantly advances the study of pioneering black dancers by providing valuable biographical and historical information on a group of artists who worked during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s to legitimize black dance as a serious art form. John O. Perpener sets these seminal artists and their innovations in the contexts of African-American culture and American modern dance and explores their creative synthesis of material from European-American, African-American, Caribbean, and African sources.

Perpener begins with Hemsley Winfield, a versatile performer and director whose company, the New Negro Art Theatre, launched the careers of Edna Guy, Randolph Sawyer, and Ollie Burgoyne, among many others. Also profiled are Charles Williams, who directed the Hampton Creative Dance Group at the Hampton Institute in Virginia, and Asadata Dafora Horton, a native African who established himself as the preeminent purveyor of African dance and culture in America during the 1930s. Dafora's African Dance Troupe, which at one point came under the umbrella of the WPA Federal Theatre Project, was a focal point of the famous "voodoo" Macbeth, an all-black production set in Haiti and directed by the young Orson Welles.

Stepping onto the path cleared by these early innovators, two important artists combined dance with anthropology to expand the reach and scope of African-American dance. Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus both studied anthropology and engaged in extensive fieldwork that infused their dances with Caribbean and African influences. Dunham founded two ambitious training schools, one in New York and one in East St. Louis, while Primus's projects included an African Arts Center in Monrovia, Liberia, dedicated to collecting dance material, teaching, and organizing professional performances.

Perpener examines the politics of racial and cultural difference and their impact on these early African-American dance leaders. In particular he documents the critical reception of their work, detailing the rigid preconceptions of African-American dance that white critics imposed on black artists. He also surveys important black dancers and choreographers since 1950, including Talley Beatty, Donald McKayle, Alvin Ailey, Eleo Pomare, Rod Rodgers, and Dianne McIntyre, and discusses how they have extended and diverged from traditions established by their predecessors.

In We Want Freedom, Mumia combines personal experience with extensive research to provide a compelling history of the Black Panther Party-what it was, where it came from, and what rose from its ashes. Mumia also pays special attention to the U.S. government's disruption of the organization through COINTELPRO and similar operations.

While Abu-Jamal is a prolific writer and probably the world's most famous political prisoner, this book is unlike any of Mumia's previous works. In We Want Freedom, Abu-Jamal applies his sharp critical faculties to an examination of one of the U.S.'s most revolutionary and most misrepresented groups. A subject previously explored by various historians and forever ripe for "insider" accounts, the Black Panther Party has not yet been addressed by a writer with the well-earned international acclaim of Abu-Jamal, nor with his unique combination of a powerful, even poetic, voice and an unsparing critical gaze. AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE PANTHERS BY THE 'VOICE OF THE VOICELESS'.......2007-03-12

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Readers this space may have noticed in my profile that I am a supporter of the Partisan Defense Committee, an organization committed to the defense of and freedom for class war prisoners. The author of the book under review death row inmate, former Black Panther and a `voice for the voiceless' Mumia Abu Jamal is currently the most publicized case of that organization as he faces continued threats to his life by the American justice system. Here he has written a lively and informative account of his `original sin', joining the Black Panthers as a teenager, that has since then put him in the crosshairs of the government and its courts. While one can honestly disagree, as this writer does, about the politics of the Panthers (see all my reviews for other Panther-related reviews) and about Mumia's current political perspective this book demonstrates why there is an extremely good reason why he is called ` the voice of the voiceless'.

Apparently, when the government gets you in its sights you are their forever, especially if you are black. Mumia is not the only former Black Panther still in prison, only the most prominent (see Partisan Defense Committee website for others supported by that organization). Although his politics have changed their focus since his Panther youth one of the most inflammatory statements made by the prosecution in his Pennsylvania murder trial in 1982- supposedly to support a so-called `motive' for his crime was his youthful membership in the Panthers. Accordingly, that made him some kind of kill-crazy cop hater for life. No, this characterization will not do. Like many black youth at the time the Panthers brought Mumia to political life at a time when thoughtful black militants were looking for a way forward in the black liberation struggle. That the Panthers could not succeed for various reasons described in the book does not negate their political, not criminal influence. One has to look to the government's reaction to the Panthers if one wants to find serious life-threatening criminal activity

Along with several other books I have been reading lately this book has made me think back to the days when we of the white left were head over heels in love with the Black Panthers as the epitome of revolutionary manhood (and it was mainly men) and of revolutionary struggle. Well, as we are all painfully aware, those days are long gone although the goals fought for in those days are still desperately in need of completion. Thus, some thoughts about the ups and downs of the Black Panther experience, the most militant and subjectively revolutionary part of the black liberation movement of the 1960's, and its role in the history of black liberation is in order. Mumia provides much anecdotal information, particularly about the rank and file and the effect that the Panther experience had on turning around some very tough lifestyle situations.

As any photograph taken of the Panthers from the period would demonstrate the Panthers and particularly the central leadership, Huey Newton, Bobby Searle, Eldridge Cleaver among others were not adverse to little provocative demonstrations or shock-value publicity. The FBI, however, early on had other plans for them and they were not pretty. If J. Edgar Hoover saw the placid Martin Luther King-led branch of the civil rights movement as some kind of communist conspiracy then he turned apoplectic at the thought of armed black men asserting their right to bear arms. Since early slavery times that possibility had always been the fear of whites and the response was no different this time. Over a very short period the Hoover-orchestrated federal and state drive against the Panthers left most of the key leaders and cadre dead, in jail, on bail or in hiding, This was not the first time a perceived leftist threat had been deal with this in this way. One can think of the International Workers of the World (Wobblies) in the World War I period, the Communist and Anarchist `red scare' raids and deportations after that war and more recently the anticommunist witch hunts of the 1950's. With this difference, however, in the case of the Panthers there was a concerted effort to kill off every one they could get their hands on. Read here if you want to learn more about what that did to the organization, particularly as it, in self-defense, had to turn into a de facto legal defense organization. Read and re-read this book.
