3 out of 5 stars just a few more details..........2005-09-17

I really enjoyed the tone of this book, it was full of excellent background information (history, customs, etc.). What I found lacking (a problem I have not encountered with other rough guides) was a lack of details. Many bus companies were left out, and some of the maps were difficult to follow. I do not know spanish and felt very dependent on a guide book. The Lonely Planet had many of the details I felt the Rough Guide lacked, but I would really prefer to use the Rough Guides.

4 out of 5 stars Also their language please.......2005-08-06

This travel guide was a great help during my recent stay in Peru. It covers a lot in the way of practicalities, like transport, food and wine, etc. It is also very informative on regions, history and culture. It has a useful reading list for anyone wanting to take further their knowledge of Peru. In actual fact, I think the world of this guide. With one exception. It could include a good section on the language. I tried my Spanish but was not always understood. Particularly in everyday speech they seem to use different expressions. So 4 stars for this guide as it is, 5 if a good language section is added on!

2 out of 5 stars Brand new edition already outdated.......2003-12-02

I used the third edition of this book on a trip two weeks after it was published. But I found that much of the information was less reliable and up-to-date than in the Frommer's guide, which is about a year older. Examples: the information on Perurail never mentioned the fact that it is now owned by Orient Express, and is mostly a luxury service with changed schedules, increased prices, and some discontinued lines. And in Ollantaytambo (not a town with a lot of hotels to choose from) this guide didn't mention the three-year old Hotel Pakaritampu, whereas Frommer's correctly identified it as the nicest hotel in town. The reviews of other hotels and restaurants also turned out to be less reliable and useful than Frommer's. This guide does have much good background information on Peru's history and people, and has good maps of the cities. We ended up using this book mostly for background reading and used the Frommer's guide more for practical information.

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2003-02-07

I just returned from 2 weeks in Peru using this book and it was terrible, way below the standard of other Rough Guides. Here are the main problems:

Out-of-Date Listings - This book may have been reissued in August 2000, but it has not been comprehensively updated. Many of the listed restaurants and hotels no longer exist, which was very frustrating and time-wasting. Moreover, many good establishments that should have been in the book were missing (e.g. Inka Cafe, the best restaurant among the limited number available on the Plaza de Armas in Cusco).

Bad Organization - The city sections are organized as though you were doing a walking tour of each city. It tells you what's in neighborhood A, then in neighborhood B, etc., even if there's really nothing worthwhile to see in neighborhood A or B. This is stupid, because nobody travels that way. What it means is that you have to read the entire city section, wading through a lot of useless info along the way, to figure out what to do.

Poor Recommendations - Most travellers have limited time. A good guidebook helps them manage their time by recommending sites to see or to avoid. Unfortunately, this book seems too afraid to have an opinion, except on the most obvious things (e.g. you should visit Machu Picchu). I searched in vain for a list of the best things to do in Peru, or in any of the cities I visited. The book just doesn't help you plan.

The only caveat to the above comments is that I'm not sure any other guidebook does any better than the Rough Guide. One of these days, someone will write a guidebook that tells travellers what they really want to know -- namely, where should I go, and how can I best understand the places that I visit? Until then, we're forced to rely on subpar offerings like this one that promise a lot more than they deliver.

5 out of 5 stars BUY this book!.......2002-01-31

Having what I referred to as my "Blue book" I traveled from Lima to Paracas to Nasca to Cuzco to Machu Picchu to Lake Titicaca and Ariquipa. This book was HEAVEN SENT. We never had to worry about which restaurant to eat in or which hotel would be clean.

We are already planning the next trip which will include Iquitos and Machu Picchu again! I won't need any other books. I have my "blue book!"

    Thank You!

    4 out of 5 stars Decent Introduction........2003-02-12

Until 1997 and the release of Spielberg's grand film, AMISTAD, I had never heard of the Amistad uprising. That movie, through a mix of fact and fiction, piqued my interest and I began reading and researching all I could about the Amistad. That search led to me learning a great deal more about African-American History than I had ever learned before. In the way the movie piqued my interest, AMISTAD RISING will pique younger student's interest in not only the Amistad, but a host of other subjects as well. The book itself is fairly short and contains some very powerful illustrations. The text skimps on the facts of the Amistad and relies a great deal upon the author's imagination to tell the story of Cinque. Nevertheless, there is enough factual information that children can learn something without becoming bored with the specifics of historical data. This is a wonderful book and children are fascinated by the pictures. Great reading for African-American History Month.

    5 out of 5 stars Amistad Rising.......2001-06-12

It was in 1839 and slavery was still prominent and legal. Many slave owners had become very rich from selling human beings and wanted to continue this way of life. Amistad Rising is written and published in a way that allows readers to visualize and imagine what life would be like for and African-American during the time of slavery. The reader is also allowed to identify with the main character Joseph Clinque and witness the events that occurred in his life. The reader is also made aware of how he was able to empower himself to settle the conflicts in his life. I believe this book would definitely appeal to students in grades six and up. Not only are they provided with the history of Amistad, but they are invited to relate to it's main character. It is important for students to read books that have a historical background about mistreatments of others and how conflicts can be resolved without violent measures. This book would be a great tie-in for a unit on slavery. When reading about slavery in history texts, it is sometimes hard for students to visualize the events being discussed or attach a human emotion to the event. I believe the illustrations in this book provide that for the students.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2006-11-12

This is an excellent book with great explanations about composition. It has many photographies to use as examples and many useful asignments. I strongly recommend it.

I had the good fortune to attend a day's seminar on photography conducted by the author of this book Freeman Patterson. This inspired me to buy this book, and I have found that it takes me beyond where Freeman left off at the Seminar and invites me to go hands on with the concepts he introduced to me and more. I think you should buy this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2006-01-19

It was quite interesting to learn exactly why the photographs in this book were taken. The techniques were clever and well explained. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Well pleased with The World around.......2005-10-26

One of my favorite books, this one is totally different to what I was used to get when reading a book on photography. Mr. Patterson gives you his approach and what inspired him to take each one of the photos in the book. The topics covered are what I was interested in. I can say that I am very pleased with this book.
This is an excellent book and highly recommended for the topics covered.

      2 out of 5 stars Lastest edition........2005-10-08

As compared with the earlier edition, unfortunately there is very little that is new here. Also, as is true in the earlier edition, there are not enough visual examples of either the building blocks or the arrangements. For the very useful basis ideas, buy a used copy of an earlier edition.

      Book Description

Kids and pets are as timeless a combination as peanut butter and jelly. Pets provide security for kids-a warm buddy to snuggle with on cold winter nights, a sympathetic ear to listen to their woes and secrets (and not tell anybody), a clown of sorts who makes them laugh even when things seem gloomy. And pets find companionship in children, too. Kids give them all the attention they crave and even a few tasty morsels under the dinner table when Mom isn't looking!

Mark J. Asher's collection Barking Up the Family Tree celebrates that precious, everlasting bond with charming, heartwarming photographs of children and their animals-from dogs and cats to horses and hamsters. Each "awwww"-inspiring photo accompanies a brief "interview" with a child and his or her pet and reveals:

      " common interests

" what the child learned from the pet

" what the pet learned from the child

" what animal the child would be

" what type of person the animal would be

First of all I must say my opinion is a bit biased since my granddaughter Allison, and her pet, Andy grace the cover of this book. Also, my other granddaughter, her sister, Katie along with her cat, Missy are on page 41. I loved reading what the children had to say about their pets. It is so refreshing to see a book both children and adults would enjoy. Rita, Rehoboth Beach, DE

3 out of 5 stars Some helpful ideas!.......2007-03-06

I think the book is worthwhile...even if just for the photos...in the case of those that have some concept of how to put things together or make those photos come to life. I was inspired by several pictures that I plan to implement. However there may be those who find the book is lacking in detail as to how to create some of the purposed ideas...so in that respect it may be frustrating. The book doesn't focus enough in my opinion on small spaces...as much as it does on being more organized & utilizing creative organizational methods to enhance a space. It appears that some of the rooms could be categorized as medium to large in some cases...so I deducted points for BH&G for not adhering to sticking to the main so called objective of the book. Overall I'd recommend the book though...however try finding it on sale to ease your conscience.

4 out of 5 stars Great tips and photos.......2006-05-18

The book's strong points are the photos and some of the practical tips and ideas. It's not an easy read so I don't see myself reading it again, but I will flip through it from time to time to get ideas from the pictures.

4 out of 5 stars Some Drawbacks, But Great Photos for Ideas.......2006-04-07

I gave this 4 stars on the wealth of large, colorful photos and the ideas you can get from those.
Had to knock off one star for the difficulty of reading the text. Sentences 25 to 35 words long are difficult to digest (and I have a masters degree). The photo captions are grouped together, forcing the eye to jump back and forth trying to see what is being described. Even the picture captions are such dense text that they require re-reading to figure out what the author is saying. By page 100, I'd abandoned the text and just examined the photos.
There are some great ideas to be gleaned from this book. I liked the sliding mirror that revealed a television inset into a bedroom wall. Also great was the hidden storage in stair treads. It's too bad that the text just didn't flow well.

4 out of 5 stars There are some good areas of the book..........2006-02-14

There are some good areas in the book, but overall its more about living cluttered not large in any space, much less a small space. For me the book seems to be aimed toward middle America who needs lots of stuff, rather than a peaceful simple abode. To many of the rooms shown have to much 'stuff'.

Very few of the rooms with windows shown have windows that are unblocked and allowing light to bathe the room. Something those of us who live in small cottages know makes for a bright and cheery place. Instead they often have shelves with stuff on them or stuff on the windowsills themselves. What I call dust catchers.

And on page 114 there is a loft style bed for a child yet the child shown is a toddler whom I would never put in a bed almost five feet off the ground. But its a great design for an older child. And there are a few simple and lovely places shown but not enough for my tastes and needs, since I am checking books out not because I want to look at pretty pictures, but because I need some ideas for a place I am planning on building

3 out of 5 stars Decent Book With Great Tips.......2005-10-25

For me THE GREATEST part of the book are pages 184-190, where you can create a layout of a room with the graph paper and cut outs that are included in the book!

Although the book gave good tips in laymens terms, I didn't really care for some of the pictures. Since I'm a first time homebuyer, most new developments in my area already have great kitchens & baths (stainless steel appliances, jacuzzi tubs, hardwood floors, marble countertops) so I was looking for a little inspiration from pictures in this book that I didn't get.

In this inspiring book, he shows how to consider size and scale, materials, shape, color and texture, and, crucially, he offers invaluable advice on placing ornament in the garden to best effect.

Ornament can provide an accent, create a surprise, enhance or disguise an existing feature, alter a perspective, evoke or complement a mood or feeling. It transforms the mundane and ordinary into something different and special, and makes a statement that reflects the gardener's taste and personality. Choosing from the huge range of available ornament, however, or creating your own individual piece, can seem daunting.

Superbly illustrated and including in-depth studies of 12 small gardens where ornament is used with particular success, and often with daring originality, Ornament in the Small Garden breaks free from convention and demonstrates the inspirational decorative possibilities.

4 out of 5 stars Complete info about a wide range of small garden projects.......2003-03-16

This cleverly designed book provides a short description of each project (sometimes including a tidbit about the idea's pedigree), a full page (i.e., about 6.5" x 11") color photo, and a double page of thorough instructions with detailed drawings. Measurements are given in both English and metric systems. A few pages about tools and specific techniques are included at the end of the book.

I'm happy to have this book and expect to get good use from it, so why not five stars?

First, and this is important if like me you expect the cover of the book to provide a fair look at what is inside, the book does not include instructions for the obelisks that adorn the herb garden on the cover. There are, however, instructions for the low fence. But I _really_ wanted a plan for the obelisk and, although one project is for something with this name, it is not nearly as elegant as what is pictured on the cover.

Second, at least one of the projects (a wall cascade) probably requires professional-level masonry, unless you're keen to have this wall come tumbling down on top of you. I reasonably expected that someone of average handy experience would be able to tackle all this projects; this is one that I know I had better give a miss. It was a disappointment not to have other water feature ideas covered.

Finally, several of the projects for decorated containers are just about too easy for words; it surprised me that these are included as actual projects. In a similar vein, some of the projects are quite simple planting ideas (growing a rose through a tree, herb topiary, a knot garden). But the book's suggestions about plantings do not include information about hardiness. Watch out!

Still, there is much here to use and enjoy: a scented arbor, a chamomile seat, a raised window box, and much more. There is little advice about how to integrate any of these projects into a larger design, but if you have figured out the design you want, here are some plans to implement.

I THOUGHT SOME OF THE ROOMS LOOKED NICE, BUT THE BOOK BASICLY SHOWED YOU WHAT THEY COULD DO WITH A ROOM, NOT REALLY ANY GREAT IDEAS FOR YOU TO TRY ON YOUR OWN. I GUESS I WAS LOOKING FOR A HOW TO BOOK AND THIS WAS NOT IT. SOME OF THE IDEAS LOOKED EXPENSIVE.

What a fantastic book....if you live in a small house as I do..1450 sq ft...you need to read this book. Paula so gracefully...& consistently encourages us throughout her book that small is beautiful...& you CAN have the gorgeous well decorated house you crave without letting size get in the way. Her creative ideas are astounding backed by multitudes of small house make-overs brimming with inspiration that's actually useful to those of us who are not rich..yet would like to have the nicest furnishings we can afford. She starts the book off with the premise that we need to STOP dreaming of a bigger house...& start getting bigger inspirations...which is exactly what this book accomplishes so successfully. I no longer long for a bigger house...& I'm in the process now.. of making my small house ...beautiful in every way. Hats off to you Paula for a job well done...wish more decorating books were as grass roots as yours...& delivered what they promise as yours does.

The majority of the photos are of cluttered, out of style room designs and decorating. Disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars My 1900 sq foot house is small?.......2004-01-18

It is according to this book. The ridiculous assumption of a small house being anything less than 2000k sq feet aside the book is interesting, has some great ideas, photographed nicely, and worth picking up if you are interested in making small spaces look bigger thru organization, furniture placement, color, and lighting.

Of course we'd like more space but this is our first home so we must make do with our 4 br. 2 1/2 bath 'small' home. This book will help us do just that.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing, interesting, fun, and helpful.......2002-09-11

How refreshing this book is. It starts with an intriguing little house on a traffic island somewhere in California. I must have studied the pictures of that house a thousand times by now. But it has ideas, from storage to room arranging, for homes of somewhere around 2500 square feet or less. The square footage is listed with each house. Many are between 1000 and 2000 square feet. It's about time. McMansions in my neck of the woods are running 4,000, 5,000, 6,000 square feet.. Obscene. I wish more builders and architects would get on board with reasonable home sizes again. This book proves that a small house of 2500 square feet or less can live big.

              Book Description

If the term "garden ornament" conjures up either tasteless displays or pomp and pretension, this book is sure to change your way of thinking. Decorate Your Garden takes a fresh look at garden ornamentation, presenting a host of ideas that are elegant, imaginative, achievable, and affordable. Mary Keen shows that ornament, whether formal or whimsical, can be anything from an elaborate topiary to a favorite doorstop. She demonstrates how garden buildings can be fashioned from inexpensive materials and made welcoming with a flourish of plantings; that containers need not be expensive creations but ordinary terracottas arranged with flair; and that tables and chairs can be painted or restored so that they are ornamental features in their own right. Keen is an expert at contriving simple, artistic touches that transform a garden into a place of interest and enchantment; drawing on her considerable gardening skills, she also shows how to create drama with massed plantings and eye-catching color combinations. Enhanced with250 color photos that capture every effect, this is both a visual feast and a rich source of inspiration for every gardener. Mary Keen's books include Creating a Garden and Garden Border Book.

                    Book Description

Dancers experience pain, joy, frustration, rapture, failure, applause, and are above the worldly concerns of food, money, and financial security. They live only to dance.

                    Or do they?

The reality is dancers of all ages, types, and skill levels often experience incredible physical and psychological stress and have traditionally bore their pain in stoic silence.

In this much needed new book, Dance Magazine's Linda Hamilton offers dancers the same type of advice and understanding they have come to trust from her popular monthly column. Psychologist Hamilton--a former dancer with New York City Ballet under the legAndary George Balanchine--offers a complete resource for coping with the day to day pressures of being a dancer. Page after page is filled with the insight that can only come from a person who has been intimately involved in the world of dance.

Hamilton outlines strategies for dancers for dealing with a variety of common physical and psychological issues and shows how to be true to your passion and bring back the joy in dancing. The book is filled with answers to dancer's most often asked questions and offers practical methods for dealing with such difficult problems as eating disorders, substance abuse, ruthless competition, and performance anxiety. Advice for Dancers will teach you how to:

Advice for Dancers is a result of Hamiltion's extensive research and years clinical work with dancers and includes information for a survey of more that 1,000 dancers from across the country.

Hamilton's advise comes from a clearly sympathetic and supportive voice, and when put to use in earnest is very effective. Dancers are often without a strong positive voice working on their behalf to support their self-image and self-esteem. Even though dancers have the absolute least influence in the dance world, with Hamilton's words in my head I feel more empowered in my profession.

1 out of 5 stars For BALLET dancers.......2000-03-19

I found the advice given in this book to be simple common sense, In other words, I have that so I should have used it to flip through the pages and see I did not need this book! Also, it is directed only at ballet dancers- I am a jazz dancer(though I study ballet as well). Still, I felt discounted. Dance describes so many diferrent genres. The title should have specified it's focus.

I found that this book is the ONLY book that I can trust with for ALL of my dancing questions. I have read numerous other books on dance and none of the them compare to this. Mrs.Hamilton has helped me through all of the struggles that every dancer goes through from audiioning advice to how to break in my pointe shoes more effectively to improving my tecnique and many, many others. I would HAVE to give this book a 5 stars. ADVICE FOR DANCERS is a definate must have for every dancer out there!!!
