Brigid's Place is a spiritual organization in Houston that focuses on the feminine side of the Divine. This Lenten Meditation book is a composite of several works that were published locally over the past few years. It gives voice to women's spirit and each day a different woman creatively gives voice to her connection to the Divine. A beautiful work.

                        Book Description

The glamour, vibrancy, and high style of the Art Deco age comes to life in this handsome companion to the "Art Deco 19101939" exhibition, on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and soon to travel through North America. From the birth of the skyscraper to streamlining and futuristic design, ESSENTIAL ART DECO traces the origins of the style from many places, including Egypt, which had a tremendous influence after the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen. The international scope of the style is emphasized with examples from Europe and the United States, as well as India, South America, Australasia, and East Asia, and all elements of the style are covered, from jewelry and accessories to the decorative arts, automobiles, and architecture. With imagery ranging from highly decorative to spare and futuristic, ESSENTIAL ART DECO is an exciting new take on the style of the '20s and '30s.

2 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, very badly written.......2004-02-25

Pictures are mostly from Christie's catalogs (and credited as such). Particularly disappointing aspect is that the SAME pictures are used two and three times throughout the book. There's less here than meets the eye. Also missing is any practical information on the pieces shown. Missing are: size of the object; medium (Oil? Tempera? Lacquer? You don't know); history; when sold... What IS written is exceptionally superficial and in some cases downright erroneous. So if you want a book with just nice pictures: buy this. If you want information, find another book.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Deco bargain.......2003-11-15

I thought this was a worthwhile book for anyone who wants an introduction to Art Deco. The production is quite simple, each spread has one big picture (plenty of pages have an other smaller image, too) and an extended caption. It is the large images that I particularly liked, so you have a chance to really see the essence of the style. There are no chapters as such but it starts with architecture, then paintings, sculpture and commercial graphics, furniture, ceramics and finally object d'art. Most of the images are of European Deco (especially French) the US is only really covered by New York and Miami architecture. If you want to find some books about American Deco see my Listmania on Art Deco and on Streamline.

For an inexpensive hardback, with 120 pictures in color I thought this was a bargain.

                          Book Description

Richard Karl, a doctor and teacher, takes the reader closer than any writer before into the corridors of the hospital, on the surgical table, and into the world of medicine. In these pages we see the tragedies and triumphs of modern medicine: the beauty of surgery done well, and the aftermath of operations that fail to deliver on the hopes of the doctor and patient. We witness the "M&M"—the morbidity and mortality meeting—where doctors scrutinize their own work and mistakes, and the often inevitable outcomes of treatment. Suffused throughout are Karl's keen observations on the workings of the human body and its immense capacity for healing.

"...I celebrate the rich privilege accorded the practicing surgeon. The surgical life is really about bearing witness to the human condition and about respecting the many almost whimsical variations of biology and about the intersection of the two. It is remarkable, really, the way I get to know people so intimately so quickly, and to observe the brave and often noble behavior in them, while I witness the relentless push of biology, the aging and decay, the growth and development, but most especially the healing, both physical and emotional. It is this natural drive of our bodies to repair themselves from all injuries (including the surgeon's wounds) that is the centerpiece of medicine. Without it no surgeon could cut."

Written with economy and subtlety, Across the Red Line offers a vivid picture of disease and the miracle of life. It will interest anyone who's ever been on either side of the surgical table.

                          5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book......Amazing Physician.......2006-01-17

I was a patient of Dr. Karl's back in April 2002. I was in my mid 30's and of course scared to death of surgery. Dr. Karl was the 4th surgeon that I had consulted. Once I met him, I knew he was the surgeon for me. His understanding of what I was going through, his grace, his medical experience. I could go on and on.

When I heard he had written a book, I had to read it. As a patient of Dr. Karl's, when I was reading his book, I felt he was writing from his heart. There was no fluff in this book. Dr. Karl is a wonderful man, surgeon, person and spirit. I am sure Dr. Karl has touch so many people's lives. This book is a must read for patients and surgeons!

5 out of 5 stars Across the Red Line: Stories from the Surgical Life.......2005-11-14

I was totally engrossed with this book. I have read several books recounting the life of Doctors in training and although I also found those fascinating, this one was great because it came from a different perspective.
I would sure feel much better facing a major medical need in my life with a sugeon who's understanding of the human condition is as keen as Dr. Karl's. Thanks for sharing you journey in medicine with us Dr. Karl.

5 out of 5 stars THE summer read!.......2004-07-05

If you have not read Dr. Karl's book you are missing this summer's #1 read. His insightful, thought provoking writing style takes you inside the operating room and so much more. I was deeply moved by his experiences and his notable style of writing about them.

                          5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2003-01-04

A wonderful collection of stories about surgical life and how being a patient has made this surgeon a better health care provider. Karl does a terrific job of relating the hopes and fears that a surgeon has when performing his duties. The frailties and strengths of both patients and surgeons. Things that have gone right and things that haven't. The author has an obvious passion about his work and just as obvious compassion for his patients. Karl's unique writing style and skill really take the reader there. His descriptions of the feelings, moods and events are right on the mark.

From Sarajevo in 1914 to Baghdad in 1990 renowned foreign correspondent Michael Emery charts the difficulties facing his American colleagues covering overseas events. He tells the "stories behind the stories" and the pressures faced by American reporters like Marguerite Higgins and Peter Arnett. Emery demonstrates the effects of censorship, propaganda, and "disinformation" and argues for an independent and well-trained foreign press corps.

This book is really the "how to" manual for beginning daylily addicts. In addition to a history of the species, it identifies high quality cultivars, describes various steps in planting, and most importantly is very informative about hybridizing. I use it as a reference manual as well as enjoyable reading.

This book is full of text on cultivating and raising daylilies. Has some color photos-could use a few more, but an excellent learning tool.

As I started reading it, many of my impressions and assumptions about daylilies disintegrated and a whole new concept was formed. They originated in Asia and there are more than 32,000 cultivars. Some consider them to be the perfect perennial because they tolerate a variety of conditions. Culture, pest, and propagation is covered along with requirements for registering new cultivars. It gives advice on which cultivars are best suited for your soil. Lists of cultivars are useful for selection since they indicate what size they are and how hardy they are. Good book!

Self-transformation is an essential element in all forms of Buddhist meditation — from Tantra to Zen. Ayya Khema, author of the best-selling Being Nobody, Going Nowhere, uses one of the earliest Buddhist suttas to guide readers along the path of the oldest Buddhist meditative practice for understanding the nature of "self." By following the Buddha's explanation with clear, insightful examples from her years of teaching meditation, she guides us back and forth between the relative understanding and higher realizations of the Buddhist concept of "self." Her thoughtful contemplation of the Buddha's radical understanding of "self" and her practical advice for achieving insight offer the reader a profound understanding of the "self." Both beginning and advanced practitioners will greatly benefit from Ayya Khema's warm and down-to-earth exposition of the Buddha's meditation on "self".

I own over a dozen books on Buddhism, but this is the *only* one that actually describes stream-entry. The descriptions of the jhanas are just wonderful, and certainly have helped me in my meditation practice. My deepest gratitude goes out to the late Ayya Khema.

Don't be fooled by the title (which I really find misleading). This book is a treasure of simple, yet detailed explanations on a complex subject. This book is a must for the serious buddhist meditation practitioner.

5 out of 5 stars A skillful exploration into Buddhist meditation.......2004-10-08

--This wonderful book, despite its somewhat misleading title, is arguably the best modern commentary on Buddhism's Jhanas, or supreme meditative contemplations (others might use terms like "peak spiritual experiences" or "liberated states of awareness."). The Jhanas include eight levels of conscious awareness, and they appear to be the mystical "mystical experiences" that so many pilgrims from so many religious traditions have sought for so many centuries. This book gives a Buddhist perspective on them.
--Ayya Khema, a well-respected Buddhist nun, centers her book around a little-known part of Buddhist scripture called the Potthapada Sutta, in which a well-meaning but unsophisticated student asks the Buddha how to achieve the highest level of conscious awareness. The Buddha often answered such complicated questions very simply and with some humor, but he now takes the reader into a journey full of wisdom and depth. Instead of answering the student directly, he defers the answer until he has addressed the preparation needed to comprehend the question. The Buddha clearly indicates that the higher mental states should be approached indirectly, carefully, and with great ethical and mental preparation. Such preparation usually takes tremendous effort and personal change, but without them, chasing after something like the "highest conscious states" may not only be useless but a dangerous source of attachment and delusion. Far from being an esoteric spiritual cookbook, Buddhism demands adequate awareness, a practiced discernment of existence, and an ethical "guarding of the sense doors." Only then can the various Jhanas be productively accessed, although they are not simply "obtained" by our own efforts. Liberation depends on understanding existence, not in manipulating existence.
--Ayya Khema then gives a superb commentary on the Buddha's description of the Jhanas, and discusses what they mean for us. The author suggests the Buddha viewed these supreme mystical experiences far differently from many other religious leaders. Although the Jhanas are a supremely wonderful and useful place for the mind to be, they too are subject to arising and passing away, and are not the End of the Road. Instead, their value is to allow the mind to become so clear and so focused that Insight Meditation becomes more, well, insightful. As the author puts it, the Jhanas can have indispensible value in "understanding experience," and in managing the questions of old age, suffering, and death. When all becomes still and one becomes kind, all becomes obvious.
--Ayya Khema has artfully described a wonderful teaching. She has introduced us to steps on the spiritual journey that many of us had not expected to take -- those of discipline, renunciation, heightened awareness, and decency. Life isn't easy, but it can be positive for one who pays attention and changes accordingly.
--This book deserves the attention of anyone interested in this dimension of Buddhist meditation. You may also want to consider a directed Jhana retreat, such as one of those found on her student Leigh Brasington's website.

5 out of 5 stars More difficult than `Being Nobody`.......2002-07-15

I found this to be a more difficult read than `Being Nobody, Going Nowhere`. It's more Buddhist oriented with her telling a story of one of the original Buddhist text. Still, it was interesting in seeing how the people who knew Buddha asked questions and how he answers. Ayya Khema has an ability to explain the old texts, their context and apply them to our modern lives.

books on meditation abound . the hard part is sifting through the morass of confusing and often contradictory methods that all but scream for your attention . ayya khema's book doesn't scream .... it whispers . and its still whispering to me , long after i have finished it .

meditation books can be dry , they can be humorous , technical etc , but they all need to appeal to the experience of the everyday person , the one we're all so familiar with . we have to see our everyday selves in a book on meditation for it to appeal to us . ayya khema's book appeals .

buddhism can be so esoteric . but this book keeps it simple , the way buddha intended it before our vainglorious egos started putting words into his mouth .

now if i sound like i'm about to fall at ayya's khema's feet in servile obeisance , i'm not . there are plenty of other good books out there on meditation , but few wrenched my gut the way this one did . the best part of this book is that ayya khema writes like she has herself been through the pains of the path . buy it and begin practising !

                                        Book Description

Through a series of imaginative approaches to movement and performance, choreographer Deborah Hay presents a profound reflection on the ephemeral nature of the self and the body as the locus of artistic consciousness. Using the same uniquely playful poetics of her revolutionary choreography, she delivers one of the most revealing accounts of what art creation entails and the ways in which the body, the center of our aesthetic knowledge of the world, can be regarded as our most informed teacher.

My Body, The Buddhist becomes a way into Hay's choreographic techniques, a gloss on her philosophy of the body (which shares much with Buddhism), and an extraordinary artist's primer. The book is composed of nineteen short chapters ("my body likes to rest," "my body finds energy in surrender," "my body is bored by answers"), each an example of what Susan Foster calls Hay's "daily attentiveness to the body's articulateness."

BURNING DOWN MY MASTERS' HOUSE is a memoir of the rise, transgressions and recovery of Jayson Blair, a former journalist at The New York Times turned mental health advocate, who details how he learned that he was the master of his house - but not before he burned it down and hurt friends, colleagues, damaged the reputation and brand name of America's leading daily newspaper and cost the executive editor, Howell Raines, and the managing editor, Gerald Boyd, their jobs. Blair accepts full responsibility for his transgression in the memoir and notes that while the cost for him has been his reputation and a high-flying career in journalism, the cost of not learning the lessons he did about self-control, pride, substance abuse and mental illness can be their own be a death sentence for many. His hope is that his memoir can help others not fall from the precipice he dangled from for so long. In this memoir, Blair recounts the details of his struggle with manic depression and its power to confer great advantages that are attractive to those who suffer from the illness at the same time it destroys them.

The "victim" approach is not acceptable when you're a discovered liar. This book is nothing more than an attempt to blame the entire Blair disaster on something or someone other than himself. His actions are because he is black, pressured, a drug user, depressed, etc. Reality should set in now, he did what he did because he is a sociopathic liar. If you want to read a book that gives you insight into nothing, this is a good choice.

                                        Jayson Blair is a turd,

by that I mean, of course, the human race.

To say it is poorly written would be too much of a compliment. You don't have to get even halfway through before you can figure out exactly what happened here. Some publishing house obviously offered him a large advance to write a book, and he threw together whatever he could think of off the top of his head, very little of which is probably true, threw in some "woe is me" for cohesion, and tossed it onto the editor's desk. Whether or not anyone even tried to edit this thing, I don't know, but if they did, they should be fired. This is slop, worse than those celebrities who try to "write" books. To think of all the talented people out there who receive small advances and modest printings, while this thing has done better than it ever should have can make you sick to your stomach.

As a former chemical dependency counselor, I take this piece for what's known in AA/NA as a "war story." That is, he digresses from honest emotion into what amounts to bragging about exploits. Ultimately, drug exploits are tiresome: "I snorted a bunch of cocaine, got it on with a stranger, spent all my money, woke up with a headache, blah, blah, blah."

I also agree with the reviewer who commented that the writing is sloppy and the editing evidently minimal. I had to shut the book for a few minutes after reading about Jayson's seeing the Challenger shuttle hurtle to the earth through his ten-year-old eyes. I cringed with embarrassment as he relays the "touching moment" when his fellow mental hospital patient tells him she "liked black guys in her heyday" and would have gone for him twenty years before. One of many true self-esteem lows that add little to the story!
