Customer Reviews:
Dear Sister, the book saved me lots of time and headache..........2003-05-24
Dear Sandra,
Thanks for lending me Fodor's How to Pack book! Having never been abroad before, I had a lot to learn and didn't even know it. I'm going to have to get a copy of this book for myself, especially for the checklists of "Basic Wardrobe Options for Women," ditto for men, and what to put into a first aid kit, laundry kit, sewing kit, toiletries kit, etc. I read the sections on packing for cruises, mountain trips, hot and cold weather, and adventure trips even though I wasn't going to use them for this vacation, just because they were interesting and I kept picking up the stray tip. (Thank goodness I don't have to use their advice on traveling with children!)
The sections on what to wear on the plane, what to pack in one's carry-on (as well as reminders of what NOT to pack), food for the journey, and how to pack luggage that will be checked in were extremely useful. Who would have thought to pack clothes in those plastic bags from dry cleaners to keep items from wrinkling?? I'm trying it and will let you know how it works out. They also talk about the different philosophies of packing -- the "roll" style that is especially good for duffel bags, vs. the "interlock" style where you stack layers and then fold them all together to decrease wrinkling.
On the down side, the book seemed padded and too chatty, when, being the procrastinator that I am, I needed to get the information right away. But I was able to find it, and someone could just use the many helpful checklists and be way ahead of the game, as I was. And there were things I never thought about, such as compiling a "personal documents" file to put in my carry-on, with a copy of my passport and driver's license and a photo of my luggage in case it got lost.
Altogether I found this a must-read for either the procrastinator or the unseasoned traveler such as yours truly. Thanks for caring enough to send me this book!
Best wishes,
-H

Customer Reviews:
A Review of Alexander the Great.......2002-12-03
Imagine that your father, King Philip of Macidonia was just murdered by a former body guard, and that you are forced to become king at the young age of 22. Shortly after you become king some of your cities rebel against your rule, you have no military experience, and yet that is your only option.
Do you think that ever happened to anyone? It happened to Alexander of Macedonia. When the cities revolted Alexander went in and completely destroyed them, then he sold the entire population ( selling women and children as slaves was highly irregular) as slaves to be a warning to other cities that might revolt( most of the cities probably thought that Alexander was a weak king because he was so young). I think that Peter Chrisp gives a wonderful account of Alexander's life in his book, Alexander the Great.
Alexander had many exploits along his many journeys, and there is a story for each and every one. I will tell you one of those tales; it is about The Gordian Knot. In the city of Gordium there was a temple, inside this temple was a very old cart. Its yoke was tied with a knot called The Gordian Knot. The Gordian Knot was very complex, in fact it was so complex that you could not see either loose end of the rope. Many people had tried to untie the knot, but no one could. The people of the city thought that the first person to untie the knot would rule the world. On his way east Alexander stopped at Gordium and tried to untie the knot. After wrestling with the knot for a while he said, "It makes no difference how it is untied"-- and with that he took out his dagger and cut right through it. In case you did not know Alexander conquered the entire world that was known at the time and more! So perhaps the Gordian Prophecy was true.
In this book you will read about Alexander of Macedonia (who later earns the title: Alexander the Great) and his many battles, his battle tactics (most of which are incredible), his military genius, and plus have a peek at what life was like for one of Alexander's soldiers.
If you enjoy reading historical nonfiction, and also enjoy reading about the ancient Greeks then you will love Alexander the Great by Peter Chrisp.
Great for young and mature adults alike.......2001-07-15
Though this picture book is primarily aimed at young adults, older readers will enjoy it as well. It's wonderfully illustrated and very informative, giving an overview of the conquest of Alexander as well as the ancient Greek and Persian cultures. The full-color illustrations really elucidate the subject matter. All in all, a wonderful book, and one I am happy to have in my library.

Customer Reviews:
Nice imagery, nice thoughts, no technical info.......2006-09-03
Briefly looking through this book you can quickly see that it is not a technical design book.
It does a very nice job at praising various popular magazines, and it does highlight fundamental design practices within magazine design.
It is a good overview book. It is also a good book to see many images of successful magazines without having to hunt down various magazines.
However, the problem is the book does not going into the technical process of magazine layout. Magazine layout IS a very technical process that most books don't explain. There is much about the grid - it is extremely important and very under estimated. It is also more simple than most people would think. There is also much about magazine layout and structure this book will not cover. Also about the whole process, from layout to print. There are a MILLION questions and problems that pop-up while designing a magazine. Many considerations and variables that vary. This book does not bring up any of those.
Can you design a magazine after reading this book? No.
Can you evaluate and understand magazines better after reading this book? Yes.
Can you get a feeling for what magazine design is about after reading this book? Yes.
Can you get some great ideas out of this book? Yes. ...you can also get them by looking through quality magazines.
Excellent book.......2006-02-19
Very helpful in what's "hot" in magazine design. Covers differnt genres in mag. design. Extensive reasearch and helps generate different design ideas. Only complaint: Took 2 long to recieve. From my order date, it took over a month.
Very inspiring.......2005-01-19
I think a person's appreciation of this book depends on their particular field and learning style. I work as a graphic designer for a number of different hobby magazines, and my learning style is that of a sponge - I see something, I soak it up. This book was PERFECT for me. I like to page through it, soak up the ideas, immerse myself in these various styles of good design before embarking on my own projects. I have a number of design collections, but this is the best one I've seen that's magazine specific. I also found the articles interesting and to the point, but they are more of a supplement to the designs.
pretty pictures, little info.......2004-11-01
I'm just launching a new magazine, so I have alot to learn. I have read some terrific books; this is not one of them. Basically the pictures are nice, but I honestly cannot think of one thing I learned from this book.
Inspirational rather than informative.......2004-06-04
I found this book to be a good place to look for inspiration and overall themes. It doesn't get too much into the nitty-gritty, hard-working pages of ads mixed with content, but it does talk about process and consistency of voice. The author lets several editors explain the design choices they made when faced with title relaunches and updates, and how those choices reinforced the type, photography, writing style, and illustrations used. There are rationale breakdowns of section headers, feature articles, grids, typography, photographic styles, etc, for several well-maintained and respected magazines.

very complete.......2007-03-26
very complete and well explained, with interesting comments. It gives you ideas and opens your mind if you are a not-so-expert person on the subject
Design Trumps Function?.......2007-03-11
For a design book, it would be fabulous except for the fact that you need a magnifying glass in order to read it (what appears to be 5pt type set in gray). For this reason, when design and layout of the book negates the purpose (function) of the book, it is rendered useless. Rockport is well known for its beautiful graphic design books, but I have noticed several of their other titles also designed this way. Sorry I bought it, sold it for a loss.
Almost unreadable.......2007-02-02
Most of the type in this book has been done using a size 6 Font which as far as I am concerned makes it practically unreadable. The content may be great, but I can't tell as I refuse to ruin my eyes trying to read type this small. It remainds me of the disclaimers that advertisers use at the bottom so you can't read them. Unless you absolutely must have this book, I would strongly advise finding another one
strong examples.......2007-01-29
this is a great book, it give a very nice examples about the best graphics in the market and how it was made. It can inspire you.
Great for Big City Designers, but not for me.......2007-01-22
I produce newsletters for non-profit's on a true shoestring budget. I am constantly searching for inspiration that is do-able on a shoestring budget (no color, no fancy paper, no long-winded discussions about the "role" of the designer - "sheesh") but found literally nothing in this book helpful to me, that makes the book worth keeping on my shelf.
If you have big budgets and staff, this book might be useful for you.
When going with two colors is a "challenge" you know that the designers whose work is being held up as the best of design really have no clue about the challenges faced by those working for needy but worthwhile agencies who cannot afford to hire "designers" but need to get information out, and attempt to do so in a visually pleasing and accessible way.

Unreadable.......2007-02-06
If you are looking for a book that you can read, study and learn from, keep looking. The type in this book is so unbelieveably small as to make it practically unreadable. If you thought that the old "Small print at the bottom of the page" was small, you should see this book. My advice, avoid it like the Plauge!

Customer Reviews:
Average manual........2004-07-11
Another average pet manual released on the market. The only guide released should have been Nona Kilgore Baur's thick manual on this particular Retriever. This delicacy breed has manuals written about it that required so little time by a less insightful company over the years. Cairns did not need to bother writing this material, as it has been duplicated already in superior guides. Our household contains two juvenile Golden Retrievers in the process of house and outdoor training. This guide did not prove to be any help since we had already purchased Baur's guide. The reason so many books have been written over the years was to trivalize the popularity of variable books on this very special pet. Do not buy this if you already own "Golden Retrievers for Dummies" by Nona K. Baur.
Grrrreat Book.......2002-01-07
My husband and I both found this book to be a good book on Golden Retrievers. No matter if you are an amateur or professional, you will find this book enjoyable
Something For Everyone Who Loves Goldens.......2000-02-28
If you love Goldens, this is the book for you. Ms. Cairns covers the spectrum from family pets to hunting and field dogs to outstanding show dogs. The book is filled with lovely pictures and wonderful thoughts on puppies, active adults and an especially nice section on the joys of the older dog. The book is a visual treat and something you will be proud to add to your library.
Interesting, complete, with beautiful photography.......1999-10-05
"The Golden Retriever: All that Glitters" is a beautiful, informative book that's large enough to cover many topics thoroughly. It is written in a clear, enjoyable manner, with terrific (if not very large) photographs.
Jamie Cairns truly knows, loves, and understands Goldens, and it shows in her comprehensive and occasionally humorous coverage of "Living with a Golden Retriever". She provides good information on health and maintenance issues, and more time than usual discussing field, obedience, agility, and other topics. The section on "Caring for the Older Golden Retriever" is both interesting and uncommon. The author leans toward field-bred Goldens rather than conformational, and this is reflected both in the text and especially the photography. It's not typical, and I loved it.
All-in-all, a beautiful and well-done book that would be a great addition to every Golden-lover's bookshelf.
A golden book on Golden Retrievers........1999-08-24
If an owner of a new Golden Retriever can buy just one book, make it this one! The Golden Retriever: All That Glitters covers every aspect of owning a Golden in an understandable and practical way. A great reference to be used again and again! Cairns manages to cover everything from the first fun of owning a pup to the serious concerns of caring for an aging Golden with a professional style and attitude that everyone from the newest novice through the seasoned veteran to the breed will appreciate. Her concise style has produced a book crammed with valuable information on the endless possibilities of enjoying life with a Golden!

Questions Answered.......2007-05-22
This book provides an excellent introduction to growing grains for gardeners or small farmers. It covers corn, wheat, sorghum, oats, soybeans, rye, barley, buckwheat, millet, rice, and other small grains, such as triticale, spelt, beans, flax, and sunflowers. Each chapter includes information on planting the crop, diseases and pests, harvesting the crop, storing and processing, and even a few recipes. The book also concludes with an illustrated glossary and an index.
Logsdon argues that growing your own grains is not that difficult, and can make financial sense for homesteaders. The biggest hurdle is the Knowledge--how do you do it? The best way to learn to farm is by working with a farmer, someone who already knows the trade and is willing to share the Knowledge. These days, however, it's becoming harder and harder to find someone with experience in growing grains on a small-scale, even harder than it was in the 1970s when Logsdon originally published this book. If you've got to rely on book learning to get started in grain growing, then this book makes an excellent reference. The illustrated glossary at the back is particularly useful for farming newbies.
Wealth of Information.......2004-08-21
Logsdon provides much practical information about how to raise a few square yards for grain to several acres. He explains how he raises each different type of grain (oats, wheat, corn, soybeans ect.), controls weeds, and problems associated with each grain. Logsdon also gives an explantion of how to properly rotate your different grain crops to improve soil fertility. Different tools one might use to plant, weed, and harvest grain are discussed. An added bonus is his discussion of grasses and clovers. My soybeans (raised solely for green manure) did very well. This is worth reading if one is interested in growing grains, in particular if one is interested in growing grains a naturally as possible.
Excellent Reference Book.......1998-02-25
Logsdon provides the expertise needed plant, grow, harvest, and store all common (and some uncommon) grains using a low level of technology. If you want to know how to raise your own grains without major equipment - THIS IS THE BOOK. At least some of this knowledge is in danger of being lost. An EXCELLENT reference book!

Book Description
Murder, conspiracy, torture and revenge.
Gaza is not a safe place to be!
Sensitive and kind, the young Zabout Nacer is plunged into a nightmare as the Intifada, or 'Uprising', becomes an excuse for chaos and settling old scores. Soon his nephew is unjustly murdered by Hamas activists and Nacer finds himself next on the hit list.
What follows is over two years of exile and flight from death to a darker danger, graphically charted by the author, who takes us from Israel to Moscow, Dagestan and war-torn Chechnya.
This fascinating and chilling record shows us just what life is like for the citizens of a state-within-a-state. For parallels we need look no further than Northern Ireland. The author's 'dark night of the soul', his despair of finding a safe home, and his persistence in the face of terrible obstacles, make A Child of the Intifada a compelling and important document on both a human and a political level.
