During the Second World War, there was concern as to whether Britain, unable to import food from abroad, would be able to feed the population. Therefore, the National Farm Survey was conducted during 1941-43, and described every farm in England and Wales in great detail. Because of its sensitivity, this material only became publicly available in 1992 after a fifty-year closure period. Information on farming types, cropping and stocking, machinery, employment, farm size and structure, land ownership and farm buildings was provided for all farms which were larger than 5 acres at that time. This book gives an overview of the Survey, and provides the most complete 'Domesday' of British agriculture available, including maps and illustrations of the areas surveyed at that time. It is a unique source for measuring post-war changes in agriculture, environment and society.

Very good book of photos.......2007-09-13

I had heard that this book was not highly recommended, but what the heck, it was $14.00 and free shipping from Amazon.

The cover photo, also displayed inside, is beautiful, as are all the other photos in the book. Some are not my cup of tea, but a lot of them are, and Joe Cornish has proven his mastery of light and the landscape photograph.

I found the book somewhat instructional because the images gave me ideas for my own work, and the text isn't preachy or anything. All in all, a very good buy!

Book is packed with useful information for traveling in the San Juan Islands. Includes a number of islands and how to get there. Topics cover a variety of topics for people who have different interests: camping, bed and breakfasts, bicycling, restaurants, beaches, museums, resorts. Makes it easier to plan a vacation. Highly recommended.

Great resource, must read..........2005-08-02

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in traveling to the San Juan Islands. It gives helpful advice on everything from hotels to restaurants to activities. It has more indepth information than most other travel books. I found their recommendations on ferry travel very useful. Highly recommend.

Miss Lawrence says, "Dill is a hardy annual. The seeds can be sown in fall or early spring. The seedlings must be thinned, and Mrs. Clarkson says she saves every scrap that is pulled up. She uses them in potato salad, and sprinkles them over broiled lamb."

Miss Lawrence has distilled much of her gardening and some of her cooking knowledge into this lovely little book (about 250 pages). Ideas abound from sources such as old wives tales, myths, stories, poetry, and the miscellaneous information passed along to Miss Lawrence from her correspondents, friends, and readers. Reading this text is like sitting at a wise woman's knee and listening to her tell about past times.

Will it rain on Saint Swithin's Day (July 15th) as it did in 971 A.D when his body was transferred from a forgotten grave to the Cathedral for a proper burial? Were the Chinese, who considered the frog the lord of waters onto something, "Send soon O frog the jewel of water."

My all-time favourite gardening book!.......2002-11-08

This is my most-cherished gardening book. The photography is absolutely gorgeous, the ideas accessible, and the writing is both witty and poignant. My favourite parts of the book are the planting combinations, photographed in detail and discussed; most of them are unusual and creative. I also enjoyed reading about how the design of the garden came into being, and appreciate that the author did not start out with the 'perfect' plot -- she started with a long, narrow, swampy, asphalt-covered, shady lot, in a Northern climate, and created something magical with it. There is hope for us all! There are a few task lists, arranged by season, and a few planting and growing tips, but for the most part this book is an essay on the trials and tribulations of gardening, and a photographic tribute to Marjorie Harris' overwhelming success.
