Book Description
A cricket, a rat, and a bat live happily in the dark depths of their cave. Each one has a unique way of navigating the world without light, and they have each other for company. But one day, a cave explorer arrives, and the beam from his helmet pierces the darkness. As suddenly as he appears, he climbs up and out of the cave, and the three friends are left wondering if it was just a dream.

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS IN SEATTLE, WA.......2005-09-25
Good Book! Suggestions for entertaining kids of all ages and temperaments. Happy that the food options for kids at each place were listed, as well as prices, entry times, and age recommendations.
The most important info was highlighted at page tops (great!).
EXPERIENCE MUSIC PROJECT was a hit for both our 8 yr old granddaughter and 11 year old, hyperactive grandson!
This would be a great resource for parents & grandparents who were visiting Seattle for the first time with children.

Customer Reviews:
Quite Wrong Covering Foreign Policy.......2005-03-20
My son uses it in 8th grade, and being a historian myself I checked the book out. The foreign policy part would have needed an editor with background knowledge. Especially galling was p. 754 in which the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union gets dispatched in 3 (!) sentences, (while Hitler gets several pages) two of the three saying that "Stalin executed his rivals, ordered the deaths of thousands suspected of supporting his rivals, and sent millions of Russians to labor camps. He also reorganized the nation's economy, forcing millions of people onto government-owned farms." (p. 754)....
Actually, he had at least 2 million suspected of supporting his opponents executed, and millions of peasants (estimates range to 10 million) liquidated by execution, hunger and in the GULAG during collectivization. Estimates by Robert Conquest, J. Rummel and others range from 20 to 40 million overall killed by Stalin, with most killed before 1940, which is the time period covered in the "rise of dictators" section--and not "thousands." The short part given to Stalin is not only mendacious towards the victims, but also skews these students understanding of Europe in the 1930s, and the true nature of FDR's friend "Uncle Joe"-- which perhaps is the rationale behind this mendacious falsification. There are other events in Europe in the 19th and 20th century covered in a cartoonish and simpleton way. Hopefully teachers will use their own judgment and add additional material.
A Great Book.......2004-11-17
This book has a lot of information about the U.S. history. IT had documents, like the Declaration of Independence, The MAyflower Compact, etc. I think you can find ample information with this great heavy book of such numerous answers to questions you have on American history.
Book Description
The American Journey: Building a Nation is co-authored by the National Geographic Society and offers a unique blend of scholarship and compelling imagery. The hands-on learning approach used throughout the program helps students see the relevance of history as they discover the context and connections between historical events. The program offers in-depth coverage of America's past to 1914. A visual epilogue then brings students up to date.

Customer Reviews:
Good Book, Worth the Money!.......2003-11-12
I found this book quite enjoyable throughout. The history section is adequate, and discussion of conformation is quite interesting. I agree that too many breeders are breeding "bully" staffords now which is a shame. The authors however argues that the Stafford was not used for fighting in the black country, but only baiting sports. I do agree they were used for baiting, and also that MOST show staffords ("modern") would be overcome or lack agility, stamina, and gameness in the pit. However the modern conformation is very different from old. Look at Game Laddie, perfect pit conformation as many of the old-time dogs. I don't condone dog fighting, however I have proof that Staffords were still fought in the 19th century in the UK, rarely, but surely. They should be an all purpose dog, great with people, game, strong, agile, athletic, and good fighters and baiters. This is what they were and this is what they SHOULD BE! It is good to read this book and make your own opinion as we need to save our Staffords for becoming like the English Bulldog as the trends have already suggested.
Great well rounded book on SBTs.......2003-05-29
I am a prospective Staff Bull owner. I wanted to learn more about the breed after seeing them at a Dog Show a month ago. My experience with with the breed at that show was very positive. The dogs were very friendly and sociable. My 2 year old son loved petting a young SBT pup and getting his face licked like a lollipop by it :) The book is really great in explaining the breed's history in the UK and the USA. It also does a great job of interpreting the breed standard and how its modifications have shaped what the Staff Bull is today. This book describes to a potential owner what to expect from a SBT, how to pick out a puppy from a litter, how to raise it, etc. It also goes into breeding and whelping. The only thing that I feel is a negative is that the photos are all black & white. However, overall it is a very informative book and one any potential or current SBT owner should read.
buy it.......2001-01-07
a simply must buy for all stafford enthusiasts, full of useful information from whelping to the showring, also cover's the history of staffords in the usa.

good reference guide.......2007-01-30
This is a good reference to the time period. This is not a "how to" book but rather a period catalog expertly reproduced. This book is good for someone who is interested in creating a home with elements from the late Victorian era.
A real 1893 Catalog of great doors, staircases, & Trim.......1999-09-10
This is apparently a reprint of one of the really great old catalogs of Victorian Millwork! It has fabulous designs for window ornamentation, verandas, brackets, gable ends, fireplace mantels and most especially doors. Black & White sketches show an impressive variety of ideas.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent ref. to historically accurate millwork from 1902.......1999-07-13
Note: This book and "The Victorian Design Book" (ISBN 0-9691019-6-1, A Complete Guide to Victorian House Trim) are both reprints of the "Universal Design Book, Chicago". Both contain listings adopted by the Wholesale Sash, Door and Blind Manufacturers' Association. This book is a reprint from a 1902 price listing, "The Victorian Design Book" is from a 1903 price listing, but both appear to match in price. Both books, while organized slightly differently do appear to contain the same items, illustrations and prices, with very little difference in content.
While both books use some color, "The Victorian Design Book" has additional color plates where the "Turn of the Century Decorative Millwork" uses black and white. Either book would be an excellent reference for historically accurate millwork from 1902-1903 (but you won't need both).
Customer Reviews:
Grow roses with the environment in mind.......2006-08-23
This book is easy reading and interesting enough to keep you turning the pages to learn more. Work with "Mother Nature" and be pleased with the results.
Superb resource for rose growers in Zones 2-5.......2004-07-30
Although the book features 49 roses (large photos, for the most part, and explicit detail), a list of more than 220 varieties with their attributes and information rounds out an extensive guide to growing roses in places with extreme winter weather.
The photos and large explanatory drawings make this reference stand out from others. The photos are large enough to drool over and the drawings actually serve as a teaching tool, rather than simple decoration. Want a visual reference to siting roses in the most favorable microclimate on your property? A nearly half-page drawing and its caption should do it for you. Would you like a clear and authoritative examination of the various pests who might take interest in roses? They are drawn at many times their size and labeled; the accompanying text will help you learn quickly how (and how hard) to fight back. This is an ORGANIC guide, so the recommendations are effective without being terribly dangerous.
The first section of the book, Flowering of a Dream, addresses landscaping, caring for roses (also known as keeping them alive) over winters, nurturing, the dread diseases and creepy crawlers, and propagation. The detail is sufficient without drowning in verbosity people who would be out in the garden. And the writing, itself, compares favorably with other fine garden writing, which makes the reading enjoyable as well as useful.
The second section, The Varieties: Petals of Light, offers photos and detailed assessment of 49 roses, sorted by type. Here is a reality check for the catalogs we all like to peruse. Lists of hardy varieties and additional lists of nurseries, rose organizations, and other sources complete the section. Finally, there is an entirely adequate table of contents and a very thorough index.
Whether you have relocated, as I did, from a more hospitable horticultural climate or whether you are native to the regions of real winter, you will find a treasure of knowledge in this slender volume. Gift suggestion: if you know a gardener moving to a cold zone, treat her to this lovely book. It's the book I wish I'd had when we first arrived.
A Passionate guide for would be rose growers........2001-06-14
The author's passion for roses shows on every page. The details on soil, nourishment, planting location, climate are highly valuable. Even creating new roses is covered. The photos and history of every selected plant show lots of devoted research. The listing of Rose nurseries and organizations saves lots of planning time. Love that book.
Hardy Roses earns its space on my bookshelf!.......2000-01-02
This book is as useful as a reference as it is lovely to look at. Growing roses at my home in USDA hardiness zone 3 limits choices to a few shrubs found at the local garden center, but 'Hardy Roses' provides well-organized lists of additional choices one can find in catalogs. Want a rose that smells divine? Use the charts that indicate the degree of fragrance. Require disease resistant varieties? The lists tell you which ones are easy to keep healthy. Equally valuable are the lists of catalog suppliers, because chances are, these varieties won't be available at the local outlets. Cultural information is here too, but seems slanted toward shrub rose growers rather than us die-hards determined to grow hybrid teas at any cost in impossible conditions. Along with Ortho's 'All About Roses', 'Hardy Roses' is the most-used of my 20 or so books on roses, and is a very good value. I recommend that after you receive it, keep a dust cover on the paperback version so you can carry it around shopping with you without damaging its pretty cover.
The best book on growing hardy roses in cold climates........1998-10-01
This book inspires cold-climate gardeners to grow roses. The writing is clear and easy to understand and the photos are beautiful. It covers information from where to plant your roses (including a discussion on microclimates) to growing to starting roses from seed and cuttings. It reviews over 100 hardy roses and is written by someone who knows and loves roses. Great for beginners and seasoned rose growers

Book Description
Edited by Spanish musicologists Javier Suárez-Pajares and Xoán M. Carreira, The Origins of the Bolero School examines the social, artistic, and political contexts that led to the birth of "Spanish dance." The Bolero School arose from the encounter of popular forms of Spanish origin and elite forms of French and Italian origin in the last third of the eighteenth century. The subsequent occupation of Spain by the French during the Napoleonic Wars called a halt to this process of cultural hybridization, resulting in a dance idiom with a strong eighteenth-century, Spanish flavor. This complex story is told with grace and acumen in a book that exemplifies the best kind of multidisciplinary scholarship. Generously illustrated with period material, the volume is augmented by primary texts reproduced in their original Spanish, French, and English. The volume contains two source lists-of the "exotic" or foreign dancers active in Spain from 1750 to 1800, the other of ballets performed at Madrid's principal theaters in the 1780s and 1790s.
