If you are going the Nepal to trek, this is an invaluable guide. I was in Nepal for three weeks and I used this book everyday. Stan Armington knows Nepal better than anyone. He has help from people like Jamling Tenzing Norgay and many others. This is an essential guide to the trekking in Nepal.

4 out of 5 stars Been there, Used it.......2004-09-14

I used this book during my six weeks in Nepal spring 2004 (trekking in Lantang, Helambu and Annapurna regions), and was glad to have it. In fact, I have my copy sitting in front of me right now! It gives detailed information on many of the better-traveled treks, along with some that are more out of the way. Plenty of information, including topo maps, to help you plan your trip or your day. Before I bought it, I sat down with several other guidebooks in an actual bookstore (yes, they do still exist!), and really felt that this one was the winner.

The most major component that I felt lacking was that there are many small guest houses or tea shops along most routes that are not mentioned at all, or that have sprung up since publication. But I soon figured that out on my own, and simply asked locals and other trekkers for advice. Overall, I definitely recommend this book. Enjoy your trip! I can't wait to go back!

*Note: Kathmandu has some great bookstores in the Thamel (tourist) district, and many (not all) books are cheaper than in the US (maybe pirated??). If you can wait, consider buying there.

Take a deep breath and step back into the world of Tudor Odours. Visit the stinking streets, riddled with rats and plague, or the perfumed country houses of the very rich. Take to the seas with the sailors, whether fighting the Armada or adventuring with the great explorers, or drop in on the
revolting royals. It all adds up to a uniquely realistic portrait of a very smelly age.

All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

If you've got a "nose for news", (like we do at the Tudor Times), then this is for you. I do actually own a copy, but, it's still safe in the clear plastic wrapper. "Stinking Streets, riddled with rats and plague"... "Sailors on the high seas"..."Revolting Royals", and more. Just reading the back cover sends me straight to a clove studded orange. Part of the "Smelly Old History" series: "Roman Aromas" and "Victorian Vapours". Good for a giggle.

                  5 out of 5 stars A vector marvel!.......2004-09-02

This is a highly recommended resource for all you graphic artists that use Illustrator/Freehand for a living. It goes to show what a good program combined with a imaginative artist can produce.

Don't let the cutesy cover fool you. Hughes' body of work spans from child-oriented graphics to R-rated in some cases. His style is a mixture of grafitti, retro, and cartoon reminiscent of house, techno and rave graphics.

I noticed that I've seen a lot of his art in products and have enjoyed them even before I knew about this book. I purchased this book blindly and have to say that it is one of the best buys I've had in awhile.

5 out of 5 stars Great inspiration for any graphic designer or illustrator.......2003-09-04

As a graphic designer, I found this book to be very inspirational- both in design and illustration. I have several dozens of art and design books in my library, and I can definitely say that this book is in the top 3 list of my favorite art and design books. The pages are extremely colorful and full of eye candy that anyone can appreciate. If you enjoy character-based art/design then you will definitely love this book. Looking through this book, I was very surprised to find that Hughes did the designs for a lot of the (trance and house) music that I listen to...definitely an added bonus. Whether you are a designer, illustrator, cartoon, and music fan, I highly recommend this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars A truely excellent book.......2002-10-26

I first became aware of Rian a while back, but stumbled across his website and his excellent collection of fonts. Then I spotted the drawing on the front whilst walking past it in the bookshop and I couldn't resist but to get it.

It's filled with many of his excellent designs, enough to give anyone inspiration, with design commentaries on many of them establishing the reason behind them.

If you love bright bold vector based art, you'll love the book and the freebie CD!

                  5 out of 5 stars Jam-packed with Cool Stuff!.......2002-09-27

I first became aware of Rian Hughes in the pages of a trendy independent comics magazine called ESCAPE, in 1983. The short strip I read there, NORM, is included in this book, but it's just a tiny fraction of a fraction of the broad range of Commercial Art Rian has produced during the course of the past twenty years.

Part Retro, Part Techno, Rian's Hip Fifties-influenced style remains remarkably unique and instantly identifiable. His negative space logo for the Vertigo comic book, THE INVISIBLES is just one of a thousand brilliant designs he has graciously collected together in this beautiful hardcover collection.

The book includes a CD of font samples and desktop patterns. Buy two and give one to a friend for Christmas.I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you're not familiar with his work, you can get a taste of it over at his Device website.

They wag their tails, slobber, and romp just as enthusiastically as their suburban and country cousins, but city dogs are a breed apart. They live in high-rises, trot along bustling sidewalks, and play in crowded dog runs, so good manners with humans and canines alike are imperative. In this thorough guide, Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson tell urban dog owners how to do everything from housetraining a puppywhen the sidewalk is 40 floors away and she has to go nowto preventing Rover from barking in a thin-walled studio apartment. Loaded with an arsenal of proven training tips, Metrodog is the book every dog owner in every metropolis must have. Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson coauthored the classic Good Owners, Great Dogs (Warner, 1992), which has netted over 200,000 hardcover copies and has a 92% sell-through. The author has just launched greatpets.com, which e-mails a weekly newsletter to its considerable mailing list.

2 out of 5 stars Not a lot of detailed information.......2005-11-08

I didn't find this book to be very useful at all. It was basically a short review of general dog care focussed on city living. However all the information was very breif and didn't go into very much detail. if you really want to learn more about your dog I suggest getting a book that is more focussed on just one subject. I highly suggest the book "Rover, Don't Roll Over" for positive training. This book might serve someone well as a general reference, but if you have any troubles or questions that need answering or even trouble shooting don't bother with this book. I aslo didn't like their training style, it wasn't harmful, I just don't think their particular techniques work as well as in Rover, Dont Roll Over.

5 out of 5 stars Metrodog: Not Just For City Folk.......2003-10-11

But particularly helpful for those of us who take on the highly rewarding challenge of sharing our busy city lives with a canine companion. It may just make you want to grab your dog and move to the big city! Useful for ALL dog owners and a NECESSITY for urban dog owners. Great photographs. Accessible to the average dog owner but with interesting, unique information for seasoned dog-lovers.

I am a HUGE MetroDog fan. There's advice in there that I've NEVER seen anywhere else, and I have 2+ shelves worth of dog books in my house. Nowhere else discusses how to secure your dog safely while you grab a cup of coffee, or how to hail a cab with your dog, for example. One of the most *practical* books - and not just for city dwellers. Suburbanites without fenced yards or even just full-time workers will find much useful info.

5 out of 5 stars Kilcommons and Wilson have done it again........2003-08-06

I thought I would like this book, and I did. I've read all of the authors' other books about dogs, and this one was right up to par. There was no resting on laurels!

Metrodog is invaluable for dog-owning city dwellers, but it's equally useful for dog owners in any location. The book begins with how to find the right dog, and ends with how to say good-bye to a faithful old friend. In between it covers housebreaking, food, manners, training, socialization, exercise, and health care, with hundreds of useful details discussed with the authors' customary savvy and humor.

For readers who are interested in learning how to successfully and happily share their lives with a dog, this is the book to read.

                  5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2003-06-05

Few people writing about dogs today have as much hands-on experience as this team. This is the book that I recommend to those who adopt dogs from me. I know that the advice that new dog owners will glean from this book will be level-headed, responsible, practical and kind.

Metrodog covers issues that real dog owners face. How can I get my dog to behave well enough to take him on my day to day errands? How should I handle encounters with those who are mentally ill? How should I exercise my dog? The skills listed herein are practical and easy to teach.

I adopt my rescue dogs to families who will really love and care for them, and I recommend books that will help them to integrate their new dogs easily and painlessly. I recommend Metrodog wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the city dog..........2003-05-31

...this book is an excellent source for any dog owner. With their usual entertaining writing style, Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson guide one through choosing a dog, housebreaking and training it. Their experience in dog training is extensive and it shows throughout the advice and tips in the book. We live in the suburbs, but have found this book tremendously helpful as we work our German Shepherd puppy towards being a therapy dog! ...

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and Useful.......2007-02-08

A nice fit between text and illustrations, with a clean, well-ordered layout. This book would suffice as the only reference book for any home gardener. Lots of details, and yet not too "botanical" for the beginning gardener.

5 out of 5 stars Gardening Entails The Use Of All Of Your Senses........2004-04-06

Peeking out of my widow on an early Montreal spring morning I was depressed and horrified to notice snow on the ground! Although, where I live, you never know when winter ends and spring arrives; it still came as a shock!

In all probability, this would drive some to go for a swig of cognac in order to alleviate their winter blues, however, I decided to think positively and I began planning my garden.

Every spring I have this urge to get it right. Unfortunately, I seem to fall into my annual trap in being clueless as to where to start, and even if I knew, how to continue maintaining a beautiful garden.

Over the years, with all good intentions, I have either thumbed through or read from cover to cover one of the many gardening books. Most never seem to satisfy my needs. Moreover, they seem to presume that I know or should understand the basics of gardening. As a result, they devote very little space in delving into such topics as what is gardening, what is a plant, what plants need, what we need, where to start, and soil improvement.

However, recently, along comes a superb comprehensive coffee table tome, How To Be A Gardener, authored by Alan Titchmarsh with glorious illustrative photographs by Jonathan Buckley that just about answers all of my naive queries.

This beautifully rendered guide was published as an accompaniment to the BBC television series entitled, How To Be A Gardener. The guide not only explains how to garden, but why practicing certain techniques will aid us in achieving better results.

The author points out that gardening should be a pastime where one's imagination should run wild and free. Essential is that you get a feel for gardening by using all of your senses-touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing, as well as just plain ordinary "horse sense" or common sense. It should also be noted, as we are reminded, that gardening never finishes, it is an on going process. If you can't accept this fact, then forget about it.

Did you know you could learn a great deal about your soil by looking at the garden shortly after it has rained? All you have to do is rub a handful of soil between your fingers. In this way you can tell if it is sandy, clay, chalky, loamy, or peaty.
Knowing the kind of soil will go along way in determining what to plant.
The author points out another way to examine the soil by taking a handful of it and stirring it into a glass jar full of water. Allow the mess to settle, and then take a look at it.
Here again the author explains the various possibilities.

This is just one of many examples of the sage advice appearing throughout the sixteen chapters that examine the basics of gardening, the different seasons, maintenance, weeds, design, patio gardening, beds and borders, edible gardens, wildlife gardens, covered gardens, vertical gardening, and water features.

One of the preponderant features of the book is its strong emphasis on clear and crafted explanations mixed with generous lush photographs and illustrative tables.
In this way the reader's imagination and curiosity are awakened and interest maintained.

For most readers the book will be one to dip into rather than one to read cover to cover; although, I must admit, that once you begin reading the first introductory sections, you are prodded to read on and discover how to go about enjoying gardening.
