Book Description

Valerius Geist, one of North America's premier wildlife research biologists, shares his common-sense insights into the Great Plains' pronghorn antelope. The pronghorn is the last surviving larger mammal of an era when the American plains was teeming with more species of wildlife than the African plains.

Geist, professor emeritus at the University of Calgary, is a specialist in animal behavior. Antelope Country explains how the fleet pronghorn was nearly wiped off the plains along with its bigger brother, the American bison, in the late 1800s. Geist also explores the pronghorn's return to abundance through North America's voluntary and legislative conservation efforts.

Accompanying Geist's fascinating text is the breathtaking work of renowned wildlife photographer Michael Francis, which illustrates the pronghorn's beauty and complexity.

- Fascinating historical and scientific insights into pronghorns and their prairie habitat
- The culmination of 30-plus years of pronghorn research
- 150 vivid full-color photographs of pronghorn antelope
- In-depth interpretation of pronghorn behavior and its evolutionary success

4 out of 5 stars Interesting despite odd writing style.......2002-07-22

This book has excellent photography, and a decent text. The writing does suffer somewhat from a flowery style in some (not most) parts. The book is not very long, there is a lot of white space on each page, and the excellent photography takes up a lot of space. Still worth reading. At the end is a good annotated bibliography. Geist is extremely respected in this field, and he does a good job of sharing his expertise.

The pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) evolved, it would seem, to feed a host of predators, ranging from coyotes and wolves to the long-disappeared saber-toothed tiger and American cheetah. (Cheetahs, John A. Byers writes, were probably "the principal agents of selection that prompted the evolution of astounding running speed in pronghorn"--a speed that has been clocked at 100 kilometers an hour.) Lacking many of those predators, today the pronghorn population has grown throughout the American West, making the animals a common sight for ecotourists and residents alike. Among other things considered in this thorough survey of pronghorn biology, Byers looks at "ghost behavior"--patterns of action determined by ecological conditions that long ago changed. Horses, for instance, remain herd-based social animals as a protective mechanism against predators, although, as he writes, "predator-driven selection has been relaxed."

Book Description

Pronghorn antelope are the fastest runners in North America, clocked at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour. Yet none of their current predators can come close to running this fast. Pronghorn also gather in groups, a behavior commonly viewed as a "safety in numbers" defense. But again, none of their living predators are fearsome enough to merit such a response.

In this elegantly written book, John A. Byers argues that these mystifying behaviors evolved in response to the dangerous predators with whom pronghorn shared their grassland home for nearly four million years: among them fleet hyenas, lions, and cheetahs. Although these predators died out ten thousand years ago, pronghorn still behave as if they were present—as if they were living with the ghosts of predators past.

Byers's provocative hypothesis will stimulate behavioral ecologists and mammalogists to consider whether other species' adaptations are also haunted by selective pressures from predators past. The book will also find a ready audience among evolutionary biologists and paleontologists.

5 out of 5 stars Pronghorn are not antelope!!!.......2001-11-04

This book basically explains why pronghonr are the coolest animal on earth. Big, mean, fast predators a really long time ago selected for fast moving animals. Pronghorn have really good eye sight and live in really open places. They have really intersting reproductive adaptations. They are a really neat animal.

This book is based on almost 20 years of experience from the National Bison Range. This book is very well known in the science community and very respectable. I know of classes that use this book. Its a dang good book.

            4 out of 5 stars Biologist's review.......2004-12-17

This book is GREAT for laypeople. I am a pronghorn biologist and I recommend this book to the general public ALL THE TIME. It includes everything that make pronghorn unique. It is very "user friendly" and keeps the facts interesting. There is plenty of other pronghorn literature for those of us who need more technical information. For the John and Jane Qs, however, this book is a great reference. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe it also includes a list of additional literature in the back.

4 out of 5 stars Pronghorn: Portrait of the American Antelope.......2004-02-12

Where else can you find an all inclusive story that spans time on the life of an animal before America existed until now. A great historical record.

            2 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures.....thats about it.......2001-11-04

Theres some good info here, however its all just (stuff) the authors stole from other writers. This book just has pretty pictures. Most of which i'm pretty sure were taken at the National Bison Range in western montana. That just happens to be where i spent 3 months this summer studying pronghorn with John Byers (look him up...he's in this book, and they misspelled his name at least once.). Good book for the average person that doesn't want to know specifics about pronghorn....bad book if you want more out of it than just "oh, they aren't antelope?"

Oh, and the title is dumb.....read and you'll understand why.

5 out of 5 stars Visually stunning, and accurately informative.......2001-08-09

Pronghorn: Portrait Of The American Antelope is the result of a superb collaboration between nature writer Gary Turbak and nature photographers Alan and Sandy Carey. Readers are introduced into one of the most graceful animals of the American West with an informative history of the pronghorn antelope, its distinguishing features, preferred habitat, and life cycle behavior. Visually stunning, accurately informative, Pronghorn is a recommended addition to any personal or community library American wildlife collection!

4 out of 5 stars Decent for major tourist hubs.......2004-09-03

THIS IS A REVIEW FOR THE 2004 EDITION. THE OTHER REVIEWS HERE ARE FOR AN OLDER EDITION. I used this book for a trip in November 2004. The Fodor's guide was good for the major places I traveled to (Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio), but didn't cover the more obscure places in the south of Bahia or even some places close to Salvador. However, it was really nice to have this book to compliment (save me from using) the crappy Lonely Planet book all the time. At least I got a second opinion! The Rio coverage is pretty good and this was the most up-to-date book I used. Apart from the LP city guide to Rio. The Fodor's menu guide in the back of the book really came in handy. Ultimately, none of the guides to Brazil seem superb, so I recommend taking at least two and plenty of grains of salt.

                1 out of 5 stars Fodor's Brazil.......2000-12-07

The book, frankly speaking, stinks. All it does is it creates dead weight for you to be carrying. You'll definitely be better off using other travel guides (e.g., Lonely Planet) or even inquiring at your hotel desk. Only about 10% of the information in the book is actually somewhat useful. It is otherwise rather USELESS!

5 out of 5 stars To see the real Brazil - Written by those who know.......2000-05-20

What a great guide to this wonderful country - not just a listing of tourist trappings, rather a substantial guide to the real Brazil. If you're interested in going beyond the tours and hotels, you should use this guide.

1 out of 5 stars poorly written and lacking in information.......2000-02-07

leave this badly written guide on the bookshelf and buy the lonely planet guide to brazil instead.

                    Book Description

This book features more than 75 examples of glass, one of the oldest and most traditional of materials, in its many applications. These range from traditional examples to the new processes created by Ozone and Fusion Glass, which enable architectural glass to be both customized and texturized. Murano Glass is also featured, with its 1000 year old millefiori method updated to appeal to contemporary tastes. Scientific uses of the materials are also explored, including glass in fibre-optic lights and a new dermatological cream that contains millions of particles.

Glass is seen in all it's applications-- including architecture, furniture, lighting, and domestic products-- as well as in all its forms-- mosaic, sandblasted, etched, colored, texturized, and moulded.

Rotovision's "Materials for Inspirational Design" series explores the myriad possibilities of materials for today's designer. Each book in the series introduces the properties of a material and demonstrates some of its extraordinary possibilities.

Lefteri assembles a multitude of stunning photography and concise and useful information. As a practising industrial designer it is very useful to have resources that stimulate and inspire new ideas. We are at the beginning of the age of materials, and this book gives a good insight into the world of glass. As the author states in the preface, the book is not technically complete, however, it has a great layout and enough information to spark the mind.

5 out of 5 stars Small Spaces, Large Ideas.......2002-09-19

I have found this book to be an excellent resource. The pictures are beautiful and the text was easy and delightful to read. The homes examined in the case studies make excellent use of the space they are given (some as small as 300 sq. ft) and are inspirational. This book has given me some great ideas for my home!

4 out of 5 stars Fun book to browse, but there are other choices, too........2002-01-04

Like the title suggests, this is a coffee table sized book about homes that are primarily glass, generally in the classic modern tradition. The book is in five sections: Pioneers, Glass Structures, Landscape Houses, Urban Houses, and Glass Features. It is wonderful to browse. A minor weakness in the book is the layout of some pictures; some are too small and others go on both sides of the page but the book crease sometimes interupts the flow of the picture. The text, while often useful, sometimes could have been better understood if a simple drawing of the floorplan was more often included. A good, solid and fun title to read that includes more types of buildings, like a townhouse, than in other titles. But I would consider purchasing Classic Modern; Mid-Century Modern at Home, by Deborah Dietsch, or Living Modern; Bringing Modernism Home, by Andrew Weaving before purchasing this title.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, an enormous sheltie family tree........2000-08-19

I found a copy of this book at a pet store for 2.50!!!! It is worth much more than that however. Being a Breeder and fancier this book offers a wealth of information, especially on kennels and lines. I was delighted that the book featured many of the best dogs in the lines I am working with. As another reviewer put it, we should look to this book to see what shelties looked like when they were bred the to the standard, how they should look, unlike the current trends in sheltie today, that I feel are poor. If someone wanted to see some excellent example of the breed, I would tell them to look at his book, rather than go to a dog show. This book shows the great kennels and the great dogs, and is a necessity for any serious fancier. However, I do not recommend it for the casual pet owner, or anyone who is simply not intrested in lines or champions and simply wants a basic guide to learn how to properly care for their sheltie, and what to expect. For this person, I recommend "Shetland sheepdog: A Guide to a Happy, Healthy pet" by cathy merrithew. It is much more appropriate for a pet owner, yet still contains enough info on sheltie history to to be boring or too basic. The book of the shetland sheepdog is a valuable reference to any fanciers bookshelf. I refer to mine often. If you are serious about the sheltie, go buy a copy!

5 out of 5 stars Wealth of Information for breeders: Learn your roots.......1998-08-03

This book is an excellent resource for those who want to seriously develop a bloodline and are ready for the work required to research. With a wealth of pedigrees and pictures you should be able to find quality individuals behind your Sheltie. If you are new to the breed the pictures should give you an overall view so you can determine what type (and line) fit your expectations. Older pictures (less 'perfected' than modern photo work) honestly show where we came from. A worthwhile purchase for serious breeders or lovers of the breed.

5 out of 5 stars I lvoed looking at the sheltie before they were "improved.".......1997-06-09

I intend on buying this book sometime soon, when I can afford it. There are many pictures of my shelties line and I enjoy looking at them, over and over. Looking at the "old timers" I see what I love in the sheltie and will continue to look for, although modern breeders have altered their look drastically their has to be some that are true to the great champions. Maybe, the breeders of today should look to the past for the shelties future

3 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures, but not worth the money........1996-01-23

This is a large book, with many, many pictures of shelties, quite a few of them in color. However, there is not much else of practical use to the casual Sheltie owner.

This manual-sized book is full of gorgeous color photos of Shelties, although mostly tri-colored ones. It is very professionally written and informative, and also has a page in the back where you can record information on your dog, as well as add a photograph. The last page includes an airbrushed illustration of the general external features of the Shetland Sheepdog.

This is a great book for someone who has or is going to have a companion (as opposed to show dogs). Tells you everything you need to know in an incredibly readable style, tons of color and black and white pictures of shelties, and full of useful information. There's an interesting section comparing the British and US standards for the breed (the author is British). If someone is looking for more information on Shelties this is the book to get. The only unreadable section is the part covering important North American bloodlines, which is written by someone else, and immediately bogs down in breeder-speak. The best sheltie book I've read so far.

                      Book Description

Spatz was looking out the backdoor when a scratching sound reached his keen ears. The intelligent black, white, and brown Sheltie knew he had to track it down. "I have to go out," he barked. So begins the encounter of an exuberant Shetland sheepdog with a distinctive scratching sound and its source, Gray Squirrel. This beautifully-illustrated children's book introduces the real-life adventures of Spatz, a Sheltie who likes to get dirty, play hide-and-seek, fetch balls, catch Frisbees, and even blow bubbles underwater. He lives with his owner Sherry Fair in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains and the South Carolina Midlands.

This has quickly become my young daughter's favorite book. She has a dog of her own, and she especially appreciates that she is reading about the tales of a real dog. The writing is perfect for a beginning reader and the illustrations give an impression of a dream-like appearance. Detailed enough to show the story, but they also leave something that can be completed by the reader's imagination. Highly recommended.

It is a monument to them of all the facts they have so carefully recorded for the benefit of the Shetland Sheepdog and his owner. One hundred and sixty eight pages contain fourteen Comprehensive Chapters: The Home and Origin of the Shetland Sheepdog. The History of the Breed Including its Clubs. Book Description

The orchid is the most evocative of flowers, inspiring in some of its admirers a fanaticism akin to madness, as recently demonstrated in Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief. This elegant survey of the orchid treats its place in legend and suggests the impact that these exotic plants, whose "exuberance and heavy, sensual beauty . . . seemed to bear witness to some original sin." Berliocchi chronicles the adventurers and scientists who introduced these marvels, discusses their place in the arts, from literature and magic to cuisine, and concludes with accounts of the most important genera and their cultivation. Splendidly illustrated with period engravings and botanical paintings, it is literate and delightful.

5 out of 5 stars very interesting book.......2007-09-19

This book is filled with historical content, I could not stop reading because the book is so interesting. I was intrigued to find out that Charles Darwin was obssesed with orchids, they don`t tell you that in history class, or that he came up with his theory of evolution when he was traveling the world on a ship called the H.M.S, looking for new species of orchids and other exotic plants.

4 out of 5 stars If you are interested in orchids..........2003-11-08

I read this book not because I was interested in orchids but because I'm fascinated by the lore and legends of plants. It was so beautifully written and so informative that I became interested in orchids.

I had always felt that orchids were somehow a bit "over the top". I had no idea just how "over the top" they were. By the tie I read the chapter on myths and legends I was hooked, and when I finished "Patrons and Hunters" I couldn't put the book down. Just as well because I would have missed the story about vanilla being part of the Aztecs chocolate drink, and, of course, thought to be an aphrodisiac. Montezuma was said to drink it fifty times a day, especially before visiting one of his many wives.

The book also covers the literature and art of the orchid and the magic, medicine and religion related to it. There are also chapters on the plant, the genera and on growing orchids and a list of information and illustration sources. There are some colour photographs and, throughout the text, delicate engravings from a wide range of historical sources.

This is a very literate book. Not a long book - the writer does not belabour any of his points, but an interesting and thought-provoking read. If you are interested in orchids or fascinated by the history and legends of plants, this is a must read.

This book delves into the history of orchids and their rise in popularity. Some of the topics covered include the culinary uses of orchids, orchids in literature and orchid lore involving religion.

There are several chapters covering historical aspects of several of the most popular orchid families. The final chapter gives a brief rundown of orchid culture today.

My favorites in this book are any of the marvelous line drawings of orchid plants and flowers. There are also several color plates included.

I'd highly recommend this to anyone interested in orchid lore and legends.

                                        Book Description

Written in solitary confinement, Kody Scott's memoir of sixteen years as a gangbanger in Los Angeles was a searing bestseller and became a classic, published in ten languages, with more than 300,000 copies in print in the United States alone. After pumping eight blasts from a sawed-off shotgun at a group of rival gang members, twelve-year-old Kody Scott was initiated into the L.A. gang the Crips. He quickly matured into one of the most formidable Crip combat soldiers, earning the name "Monster" for committing acts of brutality and violence that repulsed even his fellow gang members. When the inevitable jail term confined him to a maximum-security cell, a complete political and personal transformation followed: from Monster to Sanyika Shakur, black nationalist, member of the New Afrikan Independence Movement, and crusader against the causes of gangsterism. In a document that has been compared to The Autobiography of Malcolm X and Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice, Shakur makes palpable the despair and decay of America's inner cities and gives eloquent voice to one aspect of the black ghetto experience today.

5 out of 5 stars Ought to be on a lot more reading lists!.......2007-08-11

Monster Kody Scott, leading gunman of the Eight Tray Gangstas, recounts his gory murders, robberies and exploits as a member of the notorious Crips. A sickening tide of violence visited this man's life in the span of a decade, from gunning down enemy Bloods to facing death at the hands of rival Crips.

Whether you're an at-risk youth or an activist against the system, you need to read Shakur bare his soul to deliver a message about the cycle of violence in South Central, the descent into crack cocaine during the mid-1980s and the city authorities' chronic failure to address the gang warfare through jobs and youth programs instead of a military-style police crackdown.

Its too bad that Shakur doesn't delve deeper into the Black Nationalist ideology that eventually steered him away from his fellow Eight Trays like Crazy De and Lil' Tray. Why not challenge the reader's own beliefs about race and class in America, even if Black Nationalism falls short as a revolutionary approach?

That said, this is just the type of book that ought to make it on a lot more reading lists in America's schools. Almost anyone with a conscience can connect with this book, even if Shakur's life makes you want to scream at the top of your lungs.

2 out of 5 stars a serial killers plee for sympathy.......2007-08-02

This book would be a much more interesting read if the author would have just presented his actions without trying to fake his deep moral feelings and such. The stories he relates of his life on the streets are of course interesting, giving you a window into the life of a remorseless serial murderer. He shows very little regret for his actions or sympathy for his victims, about the best he can come up with is that they should not have been there, in his way. He searches through most of the book for someone to blame, obvious targets like white people (americans), cops, the prison system are pointed out, no surprise there. He constantly compares himself and his fellow criminals to the military, attempting to make them seem in some way noble I guess, but it falls flat. He even goes so far as to compare himself (favorably) to the president, when he tattoo's his gang name on his neck, saying the president lacks the conviction to tattoo "republican" or "capitalist" on his own neck. It's silly thoughts like this that lessen the impact of this book, and just make him seem naive, a child in a man's skin.

Overall, some good writing in between a lot of propaganda and excuses. And what is the point of replacing "understand" with "overstand" throughout the book??

                                        3 out of 5 stars Tough.......2007-04-13

This book is tough! When I read this, I was living in a small town in the Northwest, with a low occurrence of violent crime and an obscenely high average education level (lot's of dishwashers with Master's degrees), but nonetheless, while reading this book, I would find myself riding around in my friends' cars, and wondering why I'd left my "gat" @ home. Considering I don't even own a gun, that is fairly impressive. The book is engrossing, entertaining and thought provoking, all in equal measure. I mean it's no Autobiography of Malcolm X, but I'd say it is definitely a biography worth reading.

                                        1 out of 5 stars Who Cares.......2007-03-16

This book is all about some gang member who polluted LA.
There is nothing REAL about this and everything he does is stupid.
Smart people keep their noses clean and live in tough HOODS and have hard lives to live also.
They grow up and don't spend time in prison and bragg about how tough they are because they carry a gun.
Growing up in the HOOD don't mean you need to be a monster.
Nothing but excuses and all they did was make living in America a worse place.
All the dummys follow in there path.
Put them in jail and keep them there, the world needs no more phony gangbangers...thats for sure.
                                        Hard luck...bull....
Your just weak to begin with.
