This is the book that I look to whenever I travel. It got me from New York to San Francisco without any panicky sweating. A good 38 page start that doesn't make it to the finish line.......2001-03-01

"Guide to Owning a Maine Coon Cat" starts out strong with a detailed exposition of the various Maine Coon origin theories: the 'Marie Antoinette'; the 'Viking'; the 'Racoon cross'; the 'Lynx cross', among others (I favor the 'Viking' since Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats look an awful lot alike).

The author then spends a good deal of print on the Maine Coon personality and the breed standard and colors. The photographs are beautiful, professional and in color.

It's when we get to the chapters on care, grooming, and feeding that this book strays away from Maine Coons and becomes generic and uninteresting. The photographs deteriorate into advertisements for various grooming and food products. Some show the covers of other books from the same firm that published this book, i.e. T.F.H. Publications, Inc.

Go ahead and buy this book, but buy it for the first 38 pages.

The basic content of this book is generic to all cats, but what sets it apart from others is the very high quality of its pictures.

The reader can get a very good idea of all the background, behavioral characteristics as well as colors and patterns without a lot of further research. Easy reading for the new MC owner but not as complete as "That Yankee Cat," or "This is the Maine Coon Cat."

The basic content of this book is generic to all cats, but what sets it apart from others is the very high quality of its pictures.

Half-baked Book.......1999-05-26

The first half of this book is very good detailing the Maine Coon breed, history and standards. Wonderful photos. The second half fails miserably. It is too generic. It does not go into specific details about this particular breed. It just gives the general feeding and caring patterns which are similar to other cats and other books that I have read. It does not tell you what the ideal weight should be, etc. Another area that it fails is to tell you about a specific hereditary trait which I found out about on the internet: hip dysplasia. So only two stars for this book.

A Really nice book........1998-11-01

This is a small but delightful book. The part about the typical Maine Coon Cats character is very interesting. It also has details about the different coat colors and patterns, showing your cat, and about general cat care. The photographs are top quality.

This must be the ultimate book for bargain collecta'billies, it has so many things that are worth scratching through the markets and greasing through the garages for. It's aim is subtle and its punch is vital, this book highlights some amazing things that "not many people know" about. For example, the amount of money that can actually be made from this itchingly glorious of all pastimes.

Did you know that there are collectors for items such as bubble bath containers, used playing cards, cereal boxes, children's lunch boxes, and sheet music? This book lists collectibles not mentioned in other price guides. Sources for additional information in each category as well as experts are included.

Wide variety of collectible covered.......2000-07-28

This book covers a tremendous variety of collectibles and will be very useful for the collector, established or aspiring dealer. If focuses on items made from the 1940's on, those things that most often turn up at garage sales and flea markets. Certainly the idea behind the book is to inform you of current price trends so you can spot bargains, whether for your own collection or resale. The introduction gives some generally helpful advice on sources and marketing. The impact of the internet is recognized but there are still many hands-on buying opportunities and the information here is equally useful in internet shopping. The prices listed are what are considered to be average dealer retail and do not take into account the huge premiums that some items have achieved in internet sales.

Thousands of items are listed in nearly 500 pages. The categories are too numerous to mention in detail but as you would expect, glassware, pottery and porcelain are extensively covered with many styles and manufacturers listed. A few highlights are pictured from each category and the listings are cross-sections of what is available and not intended to be complete lists of everything ever made. A brief background and sources of additional information are included for each category. This may include an expert, collector's club, newsletter or book on the subject.

Some of the other sections I found interesting are advertising character collectibles, children's books, Beatles & Elvis collectibles, cameras, cookie jars, dolls, costume jewelry, kitchen items, salt shakers, toys, and yes, even Barbie dolls and Beanie Babies. Also included are items that are just attaining collectible status with unknown potential such as calculators and transistor radios.

This is the most unique book I have ever read on gardening/landscaping. I was overwhelmed by the thought of landscaping a .44 acre lot, but she breaks the whole thing down into very manageable pieces and carefully outlines the RIGHT ORDER of doing things. Her writing style and sense of humor make this fun to read and not a CHORE like some of the others. This is one of two books I recently bought on landscaping: the other one I will likely shelve or sell!

A little jewel.......2006-02-20

If you are looking for a book with lush color photographs of breathtaking gardens, this book is not for you. If you are looking for good solid practical advice regarding building the structural bones of your garden, you will hit the jackpot with this engaging little book. Written in an breezy style by a person who obviously has a sense of humor, you will learn how to properly grade your dirt, design your garden, plan your irrigation system and avoid making your yard into a swamp with small patches of the Sahara here and there. She even gives advice on defeating the wiliest of deer (deer can jump high, or jump wide, but not both). What's not to love about someone who describes juniper bushes as "the vermin of the plant world"? I also particularly liked her diagram on how to properly dig a pond and put in the liner so it doesn't just look like a plastic tarp-lined hole with rocks around the rim. I sat down and read it cover to cover, and felt empowered to go out and tackle what needed to be done.

Kate does an amazing job of sharing the hard lessons she's learned doing landscaping over the years. She also writes in a style that is very enjoyable to read. Even if you aren't in Northern California there are lots of great tips related to design, drainage, irrigation and planting. I found this book a real gold mine of tips and tricks, guaranteed to make any landscaping project go easier.

A Great book for Northern CA Landscape DIY'ers!.......2003-08-15

If you're embarking on your own northern California landscape installation project, this book will pay for itself very quickly. Author Kate Anchordoguy shares time- and money-saving landscaping advice in a casual and often opinionated manner. Having landscaped hundreds of yards, Kate reveals herself to be a seasoned pro who's learned...often the hard way...what to do and what not to do. She says, "If wisdom is measured by the mistakes we've made, I am very wise." Chapter 1 focuses on planning, shopping, and working efficiently (i.e. how to save time and money). Chapter 2 covers basic landscape design. Chapter 3 discusses construction projects and their timing. Chapter 4 addresses the all-important (and often ignored) subject of drainage. Chapter 5 teaches you how to prep and improve your soil. Chapter 6 covers irrigation. Chapter 7 teaches you how to "plant like a pro". The final chapter tackles lawn installation and renovation. I have never seen such beautiful slides of the Southwest. If you have never seen the Southwest this books brings to life the true beauty of this enchanted land to life. I highly recommend it.

Imagine racism separating you from everything you love. Imagine you are taken from your family and your friends to a house you've never been to, to live there and work endlessly for a stranger's happiness at the cost of your own. Glenyse Ward's book, Wandering Girl is an autobiographical account of her youth as an Aboriginal maid for a rich family in a small town in Australia. Ward grew up in a Christian Mission and was taken to tend to a large mansion with an unsocial family. Her friendliness and curiosity are hard traits that get her into a lot of trouble because she sees equality where the woman that owns the house sees superiority. Ward doesn't understand the hostility of others' beliefs and begins to doubt herself. Through making new friends and visiting old ones, she finds that friendship and home can come in any shape or form. While this book was inspirational in showing the author's developing personality, I felt it lacked detail and it was not particularly engaging to the reader.
The start of the story shows a self-conscious young woman with an open heart who becomes more independent and strong through the hardships that she faces. In the beginning, she feels vulnerable and dependent in her surroundings: "With a haughty look about herself, she strutted out the door, leaving me with feelings of animosity and humiliation. I fumbled through my case to find my nightdress and slowly put it on, blew the flame out, and got that old familiar feeling called homesickness. I cried myself to sleep." By the end of the book, her attitude towards being self-reliant has changed completely. When she is told to come back to the mission, she decides to take her life into her own hands: "So when it was time for me to return to the mission, I never turned up. I went the other way! I was hoping Kaylene would be there at the stop in Bussleton." In the beginning, Glenyse also feels that friends and home are in one place and that being with them is the only way to be happy. Later, she finds that wherever she goes, she can always take those important things with her. This is apparent when she makes a new friend named Bill who works for the same family as she does. Being open and welcoming leads them to a strong relationship and a lasting bond.
While the book was somewhat inspirational, I felt there was no connection between the reader and the writer because of Ward's distant and tedious writing style. Most of the book felt as though one day of her life was repeated over and over again, which after a while became monotonous. The story lacked description and captivating detail with passages such as: "I turned the oven off and made sure everything was ready. Then I heard her call out to bring the tea in and serve it up. So I laid the trolley up and went into the lounge to serve them." These types of passages were very common in the book and overly repeated.
You may enjoy this book if you are looking for the daily account of a maid's life and a coming of age story. However, I felt as though this book was more beneficial for the author to write than for the public to read.
