Book Description
The chemical study of insects has been growing for four decades, and with it an interest in how insects make their pheromones, hormones, defensive secretions, venoms, pigments and surface coverings. By investigating the biosynthesis of insects, one can gain a greater insight into the structure and function of insect compounds, into ways of disrupting biosynthetic reactions in pest species and how these pathways evolved.
The first textbook of its kind, Biosynthesis in Insects amalgamates previously fragmented information and recent exciting developments in the field to provide a unique, concise chemical study of how insect substances are biosynthesised. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the ways that have been investigated, by which a great variety of insects, and some related arthropods, make their so-called secondary metabolites. Simpler biosynthetic pathways are explored before considering the experimental methods by which these studies are conducted. Consideration is also given to some of the plant substances which insects store or metabolize to their own use.
Abundantly illustrated with structures and reactions, and some beautiful photographs, Biosynthesis in Insects includes a series of problems and answers to facilitate and assess learning, making this unique look at biosynthesis in insects and their near relations ideal for students with some chemical background starting out on a study of insect substances. Researchers and academics will also welcome the amalgamation of previously scattered information. Including an index of compounds and species, and lists for further reading, this book provides a truly unique source for those working in the field.

Pheromones and Animal Behaviour: Communication by Smell and Taste
ASIN: 0121071510 |
Book Description
A valuable new reference on insect behavior, this exceptional new text delves into the primary sensory communication system used by most insects -- their sense of smell. This important text covers how insects produce pheromones and how they detect pheromones and plant volatiles. Since insects rely on pheromone detection for both feeding and breeding, a better understanding of insect olfaction and pheromone biosynthesis could help curb the behavior of pests without the use of harmful pesticides and even help to reduce the socio-economic impacts associated to human-insect interactions.
* Covers biochemistry and molecular biology of insect pheromone production
* Explains pheromone production in moths, beetles, flies, and social insects
* Describes pheromone and plant volatile reception
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A381863. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Department of Defense (DoD) uses simulation for many purposes. Early computer based distributed simulation support environments allowed individual models to communicate with each other but fell short of providing a general distributed simulation solution until the advent of High Level Architecture (HLA). HLA allows users to combine sub-models into one simulation, but it employs a subscription based communications scheme that did not exist in previous support environments. Analysts often use a decompositional approach to identify measures of effectiveness (MOE) measures of performance (MOP), and data requirements for studies and tests. Fundamental study questions or operational requirements are decomposed until supporting data from tests and simulations are identified. This thesis formalizes this decompositional process, calling it the Study Question Methodology (SQM) and procedurally describes the steps all analysts should use to establish a clear audit trail from question to data inputs. It applies the SQM process to a study question relating to attack helicopters to demonstrate the dendritic (tree like decomposition) approach. This thesis also provides a general solution for automating the SQM (ASQM) for use in distributed simulations that use the HLA. The ASQM enhances the analyst's pre, during, and post exercise analysis. It provides the ability to answer study questions, establishes a clear audit trail, and helps fill an analysis tool void that presently exists in HLA.

Customer Reviews:
waaaaaayyyy too much information.......2006-07-21
This book is exhaustive to the point of being exhausting - and as such isn't really useful for anyone who's traveled at least once overseas. The book is divided into sections on choosing destinations, surface transportation (100 pages!), air transportion (140 pages!), travel docs, safety and health, baggage, practicalities, the bottom line, and resources. Some of the information was useful - such on how to take advantage of open jaw airline tickets - but so much of it is a rehash of what every traveler knows. I mean, I didn't need to pay $22 to learn that I should use a credit card when making travel plans.
For the novice - anyone else, pass on this one.
Excellent Resource for Around the World Travel.......2006-04-19
My husband and I are currently traveling through Asia and used Edward Hasbrouck's book in preparation for our trip. It is a comprehensive book, that explores every aspect of around the world travel. He covers everything you need to know and more, from preparation of paperwork to interacting with people along the way. He is a expert in this field -- one of the best, and he generously shares his knowledge in this book. Travelers are fortunate to have such expertise in their hands, what it would take years for an individual to acquire is shared here. His compilation of fact and opinion is well-balanced. He also includes an excellent resource section, with many books and websites for further research. Starting your research with this book will save you a lot of time and effort -- it's all right here.
Best Practical Planning Book For Long-Term Travel.......2006-04-11
I am planning a year-long, around-the-world trip, and The Practical Nomad is by far the most useful of the many books I have read.
The book is not for casual readers who are looking for the next A Year in Provence. The book is dense and fact-filled, a result of the author's twenty years of experience as a round-the-world travel consultant. The section on airline ticket pricing is as challenging as any text I read in law school -- and more rewarding. _Every_ travel topic is covered.
Several of the Amazon reviews complain about the author's politics. Even though I disagree with almost all of the author's political opinions, his views add color and coherence to the book; they are candidly disclosed and never intrusive.
This is a book about long-term travel by a factual pack rat who has done it himself and has helped thousands of others take their dream trip. If you plan to engage in independent travel for more than one month, you should certainly buy this book.
Info I couldn't find elsewhere.......2006-02-07
This book is intimidating when you first pick it up and start paging through it, but I quickly found answers to some questions that I was having difficulty getting answers to such as 1) How do I carry all that currency that I'm going to need for 6 months? and 2) How practical is it to send pictures over the internet? and 3)Help - I'm not on an open-jaw or round-the-world ticket what are my options?
Some of the stuff I don't agree with, like the recommendation against carrying a camera, but there are a lot of Practical tips in here.
This book is much easier to deal with than the net groups I've been reading. Those are FULL of egos and biases and this book is no worse (if not better) in terms of bias It also has the added bonus of not having to wade through the flame wars about how stupid someone is.
Fun to read, but biased.......2005-12-09
I have just finished reading the 3rd and latest edition, dated 2004. As an experienced traveler and someone who is generally interested in the travel industry, I couldn't put it down!
Hasbrouck is at his best when he's providing tips for traveling outside the First World. Those tips are interspersed throughout the text; some aren't obvious. For example, Hasbrouck makes several references to the shift in perspective that's necessary when traveling in less-developed countries. Early on, he points out that capital is scarce but labor, plentiful. Later, he applies this to different situations, such as road travel (hire a driver/guide, not a self-drive car) and mobility for people with disabilities (hire an attendant to make up for physical barriers).
The First World train information is weak; that section was obviously an afterthought. The statement that "[h]olders of any type of Eurailpass can travel without supplement on any trains in the covered region, including the TGV" was incorrect at press time and is becoming more incorrect each day. The Resource Guide refers people to pass-pushing RailEurope and Eurail, without mentioning the various national railways, even though they have been selling heavily-discounted point-to-point tickets online for some time now. Visitors to the USA are treated to a dose of pro-Amtrak propaganda. Were I new to Amtrak, I'd rather learn about the weekly menu of 70% discount fares available online (not mentioned) than that I could get a [much smaller] discount by joining a pro-Amtrak lobbying group or that "[t]here is simply no comparison between...the fast-food restaurants where buses stop versus the dining-car food on the railroad" (Europeans would find either option unpleasant, as would members of religious or cultural groups with dietary restrictions).
The airfare section is hailed as the best part of the book. There is lots of useful information here. Problem is, Hasbrouck colors it with personal opinions. His rant against electronic tickets leaves out one of their greatest advantages: that you can't lose them! In an age where many tickets are only valid on a specific airline, the endorse-to-other-airline benefit afforded by paper isn't worth much. Hasbrouck explains at great length why the lowest ticket prices aren't published in the computer systems that ordinary travel agents use. Curiously, he promotes one distribution mechanism for below-published-fare tickets (opaque, international, multi-level networks of "consolidator" travel agencies) but dismisses another (Web-only fares sold through airline Web sites) as a potential example of "unfair or monopolistic practices" on the part of the airlines. I am suspicious of the consolidator tickets he recommends.
None of what I have said so far detracts from the fact that this book is, overall, fun to read. The only thing I cannot forgive is the book's political bias. My favorite example is Hasbrouck's observation that "the United States is a violent country with an astonishingly heavily armed civilian population." In the same breath he gives tips for traveling in countries reeling from the effects of civil war, economic collapse, and near-total poverty.
Book Description
The Out of Many Teaching and Learning Classroom Edition brings together a wide array of assets to provide a completely integrated multimedia learning experience. This path breaking text weaves together the complex interaction of social, political, and historical forces that have shaped the United States and from which the American people have evolved by telling stories of people and of the nation and emphasizing that American history has never been the preserve of any particular region.
The text's trademark continental approach has been expanded to incorporate a greater hemispheric perspective, while community and memory feature analyzes the role and the conflict of historical memory in shaping communities' understanding of the past.

Yet another textbook designed to make you go insane..........2006-02-03
...and adversely affect the posture of students because of heavy book bags.
To describe this book in a phrase: "Information Overload".
This book takes one sub topic and delivers, at most, around one and a half pages of information packed dialog.
It's these kinds of textbooks that are filled with wordy dialog that make me want to puke.
It's easy to fall asleep reading this book or become depressed.
This book promises more than it can deliver, namely "...to know-and love-history..."
What we need is a new positive, yet productive, attitude towards understanding our history.
It's hard to love "our" history after reading of the horrors that whites inflicted on African-Americans and Native Americans.
....Is there any reason that American students are behind? Try reading their books, try hauling their book bag across campus and putting up with their slacker teachers(who, spare a few, demand more and deliver less). There are a few good teachers out there but they find themselves moving up to administrative positions and out of the classroom where they're needed. -Buck
Book Description
Before there was Martha Stewart, there was Russel Wright (1904-1976), the great mid-century modern American designer who pioneered the concept of "easier living" for the middle class, a uniquely American lifestyle that was gracious but contemporary and informal. Yet despite Wright's enormous influence, there has been no major survey of his work until now.
This handsome volume-which accompanies an exhibition at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City-showcases more than 125 of Wright's best designs for inexpensive, mass-produced dinnerware, textiles, and furniture. As the flurry of Wright auction activity on Ebay shows, there is a thriving collectors' market for his designs. This thorough interpretation of his achievement is eagerly anticipated.
125 illustrations, 65 in full color, 176 pages, 71/2 x 10"
Customer Reviews:
Interesting historical overview.......2002-04-30
This is a great book for the Russel Wright collector who wants to know more of the backstory and history of the man and the pottery. But do not confuse this book with a collector's guide. This book will probably not help you to decide if a piece is RW or not, and certainly will not help in pricing or deciding rarity.
Bravo!.......2001-11-21
This book is a great compliment to the exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt, but more than that. The information here is not more of the same, of what's already been said about Wright in other books. Although some overlap is necessary to tell his story, there are many new details of his design life and philosophy, and marvelous photos of some of his products and drawings, not seen other books. There are also great pictures of Mary as well. I feel that this book was very sensitively done and that all involved in creating it (and the exhibit) deserve applause. It would be hard to imagine any R.W. fan not loving this book.
Book Description
Save time by training your gun dog the easy, painless and fun way.
The most critical developmental time for dogs is the first 16 weeks of life. Since puppies usually go to their new owners between 8 and 12 weeks of age, only a few short weeks remain for the dog's potential to be tapped. Proper socialization, exposure and conditioning must take place within this time frame if behavioral problems such as not coming when called, not retrieving, or failure to point are to be avoided.
In the United States each year, over 8 million gun dogs work in unison with the 16 million people who have come to enjoy the thrill of hunting upland birds and waterfowl.
Of that number, thousands will spend approximately $600 to purchase a new pup within the next year only to find that unnecessary mistakes have ruined an otherwise fine gun dog's potential.
It doesn't have to be that way. One of America's great dog people, and veteran editor of The Gun Dog Supreme, Joan Bailey, guides both new and experienced dog owners through that all important first year of their new puppy's life with her book--"How To Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves."
Designed in an easy to read, step-by-step format. "How To Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves" assists gun dog owners by providing proven methods emphasizing socialization, exposure and conditioning during the critical first 12 months of a dogs life. Under the skillful direction of Joan Bailey, gun dog enthusiasts will learn what thousands of successful bird hunters have known for years--with a little help gun dogs really train themselves.
Now in it's 3rd edition, updated with new material, over 206 information packed pages, more than 130 photographs.

Bird Dog Essentials.......2007-07-09
This book is essential for anyone expecting a new bird dog in the house. Though I have trained several personal gun dogs, it was refreshing to see other, more relaxing ways to start a dog. While we are still working with our new English Pointer pup, many of the methods outlined in this book work great. The key to this type of training is to keep your cool, relax, and don't get frustrated. No matter how simple an exercice you have to end a training session with, always end on a very possitive note. It will pay off in the long run.
First-time gun dog owner review.......2007-06-28
I enjoyed reading the book in preparation for the arrival of my first gun dog pup. Though personally inexperienced in training, I have hunted over friends' dogs for several years and have spent enough time with "dog people" to have a sense of what can work. This book presents an excellent overview for the first-time or experienced trainer.
Success!.......2007-03-30
I am sure that I would not have had such a successful outcome with my current bird finding companion had I not started with Joan Bailey's book before the pup even arrived at my home. Although I have raised many pointing dogs, I still need that constant reminder to let pups be pups and to expose young hunting dogs to as many types of home and field conditions as possible. Joan's book tells you when and how this should be done. My father used the first version with success as well for his pointing lab, and I recently ordered the newest edition for him as he eagerly awaits the arrival of a Small Munsterlander puppy. Thanks Joan!
A great read for ANY dog owner!.......2007-03-20
Joan's book certainly helped me when I became the new owner of a hunting dog eight years ago. The book focuses on the time period before the arrival of the puppy, through the first critical year of a dog's life. The information in this book would be useful for any new dog owner, whether the dog is a hunting breed or not. I would say this is a MUST read for anyone who plans on hunting over their dog. I know that when it is time for the next puppy in a year or two, I will be reading this book again! Highly recommended!
Great Help to training my Gun Dog.......2007-03-13
After reading this book I have many more ideas to train my gun dog and it provided a lot of helpful resources for building a training table and such. I would recommend this book to anyone who will be working on training a gun dog of any type.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Novice Birddog owners.......2003-12-21
This is an awesome book for novice birddog people. I highly recommend it, and give it to my (Pointer) puppy buyers. My favorite feature is that at the back of the book there are lists of things to remember to expose your puppy to by a certain age so that you'll end up with a stable dog. I pull it out every time I raise a pup as a sort of checklist. I agree with the majority of what the author has to say, and the author tends not to take sides (like on the issue of force retrieving). The book does have some info that is geared towards versatile birddogs rather than just Pointing dogs, which is fine as long as you are able to seperate what your dog needs to know. This book is geared towards the first year of puppyhood, not training... which is great as there are not a whole lot of books out there for this. Helps you to remember they are just pups and to just let them grow up for a while.
This book covers the important fundamental basics........2003-01-13
This book is different from the other hunting dog training books I've read. It covers a puppy's early development as a whole dog. Joan Bailey takes you from your puppy's first day in your home, through adolescence, to early adulthood. It will show you how to help your dog become both a member of your family and an excellent hunting companion. This book explains why a particular training method might work and how to develop a cooperative relationship with your dog.
No bad,...not good, but not bad........2002-04-07
This book is fine for the average person who has no experience with dogs. But for the average gun dog owner, the first half of the book is a waste of time. The last half does have some good ideas, but I would rather spend my money on something more informative such as the writings of Bill Tarrant, especially the Delmar Smith method. It's hard to argue with success and Smith's training methods earned him many national champions. As for this book, I found myself in disagreement with a couple of the training methods, especially gun conditioning. Overall, it's a good book with many great ideas for the beginner.
Overall, an excellant book!.......2001-06-16
There are (too) many "how-to" sporting dog training books available, but I found this one to be different in how it focuses on first year conditioning of the pup rather than training, per se. I didn't agree with everything - not that you would - but I followed about 90% of the author's thoughts and found my dog's second year training to be MUCH EASIER. I think this is important if you have a sensitive breed that won't tolerate heavy handed training, such as mine. It also explained in considerable detail that way in which the puppy learns and this allowed me to sort of 'get inside' my dog's head to better understand how to do the conditioning and training so that he would be successful and the process would go faster and better.
Great book on dog training whether gundog or family pet.......2001-06-15
This book is a far reaching work that not only addresses the training of Gundogs but also any family pet...of importance is the sections on crate training to facilitate housebreaking and teaching the dog that there are restrictions on his activities...I also enjoyed her views on conditioning and letting the dog learn at its own pace with firm and consistent training by owner...and letting the dog learn to be a dog before pulling from its littermates and throwing it into a new environment. I have trained two dogs with her methods and let 4-5 friends borrow it when training their pets...all have been great successes. My copy is dog-eared (no pun) and hilighted throughout...but a great book for those that want to try a softer method with great results.

Good for hunting beginners........1998-08-25
How To Train Your Own Gun Dog is useful for beginners, and probably less so for experienced hunters. It provides good guidance on which breeds are appropriate for each type of game. It also has a clear timeline for training progress.
It may try to do too much in one book. For example, it includes separate sections for pointing dogs, spaniels, and retrievers. If you do not yet have a dog, this info is helpful. Otherwise, about half of the book is not pertinent to you.

How to Train a Hunting Dog.......2005-10-17
The book is a little older than most and some of the methods used to train are a little outdated. i.e. using pain as a motivator for the animal to do stuff. There are options to this but it is a good book in general behavior and should be read by most people who are serious about training their pet. The animal behavior observations in the book are priceless and that is the real gem in this book.

Book Description
The cowboy is a mythic figure in American life. From his emergence in the west in the late 1800s, he has caught the imagination of young and old alike. His adventures have been the stuff of countless stories, in print and on film. The legends surrounding the old west are told and retold, growing more exciting with each telling, so that it is, at times, hard to separate the myth from the reality. A growing and enthusiastic group of collectors is finding the cowboy and the wild west an exciting area of concentration. In Cowboy Collectibles and Western Memorabilia, Bob Ball and Edward Vebell, focus on the reality of the cowboy's life. While not immune to the myth, here you will find the artifacts that were essential to life in the west. They include rifles, pistols, saddles, clothing, boots, hats, blankets, gun rigs, and even barbed wire. This is the gear that the ordinary cowpoke used, wore, rode upon, ate from, and slept under. And while these items are becoming increasingly scarce, much of the equipment and clothing shown here can still be found at reasonable prices, if one is willing to search the antique shops, the flea markets, and tag sales. Surprisingly, collectors are almost as likely to find it in the east as in the west. For the lover of old west and the collector of its artifacts, this is a wonderful book that helps make an era come alive. A price guide is included.

It's a Dandy!.......2005-02-08
Tim Lasiuta's book, "Collecting Western Memorabilia" (published by McFarland) is a dandy and highly recommended. It's user friendly and loaded with relevant material.
With a foreword is by George Coan, "Collecting Western Memorabilia" runs 183 pages and boasts 91 black and white photographs, a bibliography, an index and comes in soft cover. It serves as a guide for collectors of Western film, television, radio and comics memorabilia. Lasiuta, an established author and B-Western aficionado, has documented regional Western festivals and conventions, the best museums, which newsletters and magazines to subscribe to, a list of collector clubs, even which Web sites to check.
"Collecting Western Memorabilia" covers lots of ground: commemorative artwork, posters, production stills, lobby cards, autographs, books, costumes, newspaper strips, comic books, commemorative weapons and play sets, toys, games, models, lunch boxes, Christmas ornaments, magazines, movie and TV memorabilia, scripts, press packets, audio and video recordings, and cereal box premiums. Lasiuta even discusses how best to preserve one's treasures and how to get in touch with other fans, whether buying, selling, or swapping. He presents a survival guide to auctions, garage sales, flea markets, estate sales, and antique stores. As if that were not enough, "Collecting Western Memorabilia" boasts systems for ranking item quality, cataloguing guides, and format diagrams for listing and insurance purposes.
Needless to say, it would be impossible to produce a book of this scope without some omissions and a tiny bit of editorializing that might raise an eyebrow or two. Take for example the section on books. Still, Lasiuta put together a diverse list. I'm elated Lasiuta mentioned some obscure and out of print titles ("They Went Thataway" and "Stuntman").
I commend Lasiuta for acknowledging Allan G. Barbour's work ("Days of Thrills and Adventures" among others), "we lovers of movie serials, B-Westerns, or anything Republic owe an eternal debt." And thank you for listing Robert W. Phillips definitive "Roy Rogers" book.
I was surprised by the $35 price tag ($39 with postage). It would be a shame if this puts off prospective buyers because "Collecting Western Memorabilia" is a great resource. Lasiuta managed a large and diverse agenda within a modest number of pages. Lasiuta even got personal with a heartfelt introduction that demonstrates his passion for his subject. "Collecting Western Memorabilia" is a professional job all around, well organized and expertly researched. It's a great addition to a library of related B-Western books. Good job cowboy, ya done yourself proud! Leo Pando

All Dance Educators Should Read.......2000-06-01
Partnering Dance and Education is one of the most relevant and informative publications for the dance teacher in America today. It gives a broad overview of the scenario faced by educators in both the academic and the studio settings and the networking which is needed between them. The benefits of dance in the academic settings as related to the studio owner are explored and defined in clear and concise language. Since this is an area to date unexplored and perceived by all dance teachers with hesitation, it is essential for informed decisions and liaisons between all who touch the dance students lives. Career opportunities, outreach programs, and "multiplication effects" are just a very few of the subjects addressed and explored by the author. The changing times of the dance world are viewed from a new and exciting perspective throughout the pages while acknowledgement and validation of the traditional forms of dance education are reviewed. With the inclusion of Dance in the federal government's Goals 2000 program for American Education, it is vital that all dance educators be aware of the innovations, aspirations and directions needed to bring dance into its well-deserved but long overdue recognition within the American culture and teaching systems.

Book Description
Perhaps it is this element of risk, together with the magnetism of another person's confession of shameful experience, that make us such avid readers of autobiography.
Rosamund Dalziell proposes that shame is the driving force in many Australian autobiographies. Indeed, she suggests that the representation of shame is fundamental to the autobiographical process. Shame seeks concealment-and this, she argues, explains both why this fascinating link has not before been explored and why, when it is pointed out, we immediately know it to be authentic.
The calm clarity of Rosamund Dalziell's writing strengthens her powerful insights and arguments, the most potent of which is that autobiographical confrontion with shame can heal deep wounds, both for writers and for readers. This mature and innovative book will enrich the experience of all readers of autobiography.
