Rough Guides are THE BEST.......2007-08-03

Wow, after reading the previous review, I had to write in. I travel frequently, have used nearly every popular guide out there (Fodors, Frommers, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rick Steves, and my least favorite - Eyewitness Travel), and The Rough Guides are the best and by far the most comprehensive out there. They are chock-full of information. The colored photos are limited to several pages in the front of the book, but if you want to be a traveler (as opposed to being a 'tourist'), you shouldn't need pages of glossy information that just shows you what you will be seeing once you're there anyways! The Rough Guides gives you history, gives you insight into various neighborhoods and areas and people. They go far, far beyond just the 'landmarks' that an area is known for. If you read them before traveling, you'll feel like one of the locals and the more knowledge you have about an area, the more you can enjoy it. I'm sorry if some travelers are sadly uninterested in learning about the cultures of the areas in which they are visiting. Rough Guides are now the only guides that I will use. And if you're bored by the reading, then maybe you should question why you are traveling there! I will say that Rough Guides does not supply you with a very detailed street map stuck to the back cover like some other books offer and so sometimes an additional purchase (or a visit to a tourism office) is warranted. This personally does not bother me.

Heavy reading. Not a fun or easy read. Not very user friendly. No pictures of the sites. Informative, but wouldn't recommend this for those traveling to Paris for the first time.

Excellent Resource for History Teachers.......2002-01-08

I teach high school in the Boston Public Schools. Many of my students are low-level readers who cannot make sense of our conventional, obtuse and inconsiderate textbooks. Enjoying Global History has proved to be an excellent resource not only for my low-level readers, but for my students of all reading levels.

I use it in both my World History and U. S. History classes. Each section describes a historical era or event in narrative form. For example, the section on ancient African civilizations features a camel herder and an iron worker having a friendly dialog (excellent for reading aloud in class)about their occupations. The section on the Industrial Revolution includes a mill worker talking to a friend about her ardous job.

In addition to these interesting stories, the text includes brief descriptions of historical events to frame the narratives so that students can understand them within their context. There are some black and white images in the chapters although this is not the book's strong suit. Lastly, the questions and activities at the end of each chapter are actaully thought provoking! This is the first textbook I have used where I have felt comfortable having students do questions and activities directly from the book. (In the past I have always made up my own.)

If you teach history or are interested in a general overview of major events in world history, you should definitely check it out. While this book may not garauntee that the reader will enjoy global history, it will certainly bring the reader closer to enjoyment than the traditional textbook.

This appears to be a teaser for something else, maybe joining his faculty at the Delft University of Technology. The topic is interesting but few conclusions are drawn, many examples are given, but it's not clear what they are examples of. Techniques are alluded to but not describes. Disappointing, but otherwise a pretty little pamphlet.

A manifesto and a paradox, sort of........1998-01-05

This small, profusely illustrated book is, well, a personal manifesto against bad informational design. Mijksenaar does not take prisoners: his case studies (of bad design) include glitches by some of the most prominent dutch designers. Healthy, very healthy. There are some surprises, especially if your infodesign paradigm is the London underground map. The book is also a paradox, though, in that it is itself badly designed. By that I don't mean the shape, color, printing, which are pretty, but its logical content structure, which is confusing. Because it is more of a (needed) rant against bad info design, I call it a manifesto. It is an optimistic manifesto, and Visual Function is well worth reading, if only because US designers would profit from getting to know their their dutch counterparts better.

Jan Tweedie has a very practical approach to training the trailing dog in language and examples that are easy to understand and put to use. One of the best books I own (in my ever expanding library about scent and scent dogs) regarding training a trailing dog and general information about search dogs. A real gem!

This book presents month-by-month plans for growing your garden in Illinois. It gives tips on such activities as planting, pruning, fertilizing, and so much more. The plans are organized into categories, including annuals, bulbs, herbs, vegetables, houseplants, lawns, perennials, roses, shrubs and trees. I love this book, and recommend it wholeheartedly!

Lots of good, basic advice.......1999-05-20

I liked the book. Its packed full of useful information. I'm a hobby gardener, not an expert and I found lots of useful hints. I'm sure I'll be able to follow the steps. Charts are used to give the reader find condensed information on specific plants. Its not a book of pretty pictures but the layout is easy to read and the pages are attractive. At first, I was surprised at the use of "Brand names" but decided that recommendations are always welcome and I can always find substitutes if I want to. I have only one complaint. There's no index. I saw some information on mildew but spent over an hour trying to locate it again. The table of contents is helpful in a general way but the book would be more useful if it were indexed. I'm going to have to use bookmarks to mark things I'm interested in - there are lots of those.

Cinematic Motion, by Steven Katz, published by Michael Wiese Productions, is another one of those absolutely must-have books for serious filmmakers. The subtitle, A Workshop for Staging Scenes, is just what this valuable resource and reference manual is...a workshop in a book! It's unique in that it is written from the film director's viewpoint. The focus of the book is on creative visual staging of each scene, and the storyboards and diagrams are clear, consistent and workable. Katz shows you how to choreograph scenes and create illusions, as needed, through blocking, camera movement, moving an actor or actors in a scene, and staging, in scenes with confined spaces up to large spaces, interiors and exteriors. I picked up a copy of this book whilst in London, on the recommendation of a friend. I had mentioned that I was involved in the staging of "The Boyfriend", and was a first time musical organiser. Matthew and Stella hit all the key points, and give a heads up for sticky issues. I recommend it highly to all those keen producers out there.

The Novaks Stage Musical Theatre.......2000-08-27

I am the founder and artistic director of a community theater group, Green Room Players, that has been in existence since 1993 in Franklin County, Massachusetts, and have directed musicals each year, including Babes in Arms, Snoopy! , A Wonderful Life, Barnum, South Pacific, and Grease.

Of all the books I have read on musical theater production, Staging Musical Theatre by Dr. Elaine Novak (with contributions from her daughter, Deborah Novak, an actress of stage, TV and film) has been by far the most helpful to me. It is written in simple and easy-to-comprehend language, and covers practically every aspect of theater production.

In a very organized and straightforward manner, the Novaks have discussed selecting the musical; analyzing the book, lyrics and score; interpreting the musical; holding auditions; casting; rehearsals; blocking; and polishing. Included are specimen time tables that are very helpful to a beginning director. There are also suggestions for exercises, games and improvisations to get actors acquainted with each other and with the director. The book also addresses potential problems -- such as kissing, slapping, asides, the vocal solos, curtain calls, pit dress, and even duties of the offstage crew -- and rounds out its invaluable stock of information with scenes for practice, an appendix containing lists and descriptions of well-known musicals and various types of musicals, an extensive bibliography on any aspect of play production, and a 6-page glossary of theatrical terms.

I strongly recommend Staging Musical Theatre as a textbook for beginning and prerequisite courses in academic programs in theater. This is the most original exploration of representations of the 1916 Rising since William Irwin Thompson’s 1967 classic, The Imagination of an Insurrection. It offers new insights into the studied theatricality of the rising, in the context of plays by Pearse and MacDonagh and a rediscovered play of Connolly’s Under Which Flag? The book argues that the Rising set out to proclaim sexual equality as well as political independence, but that, while the myth of 1916 became central to Irish political and cultural life, the rebels’ radical ideas about gender were ignored.

New readings and contexts are provided for O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars and for Yeats’s The Dreaming of the Bones. The role of de Valera in the shaping of official commemoration is assessed, while the intervention of Shaw throws new light on the Casement controversy. Surveying representations of the Rising in more recent Irish theatre, especially since the 1966 commemoration, the author shows how gender issues have resurfaced.
