Book Description

In 1741, an enterprising Dutch sea captain transported a young, female Indian rhinoceros from Assam to Europe where she was displayed before everyone from peasants to princes. In an age before railways and modern roads, the three-ton Clara traveled in an enormous coach drawn by eight horses. For seventeen years she journeyed across mainland Europe and Britain. She became a favorite of heads of state, including Frederick the Great and Louis XV; she modeled for scientific portraits and etchings; she inspired poems, songs, and fashions; and she was duly immortalized in everything from tin coins to the finest porcelain. She was a star. Her tour involved unprecedented logistical planning, as no one knew how to care for this largest of land mammals. A rhinoceros can eat up to 150 pounds of vegetation a day, and Clara developed an uncommon fondness for oranges, beer, and tobacco. Later, when Clara's popularity threatened to decline, her owner spread the news of Clara's certain and imminent death, which provoked an upsurge in interest, sympathy ... and bookings. Awarded the prestigious Institute of Historical Research Prize, Glynis Ridley's sparkling history brings Clara's tragicomic story vividly to life.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-01-17

When a friend gave me this as a gift, I thought, "What the heck is this?" But I gave it a shot, and I loved it. This is one of those quirky little books where the main subject is a fulcrum for a fascinating look at the political and social times in which it lived.

The book is a gem. I'm a Clara fan!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but a bit slow in places.......2005-10-23

I enjoyed reading this book. It provides an insight into an age long ago when life was more limited geographically, and something as simple as seeing what a rhinocerous looks like was a special event.

The book moved a bit slowly in places since the author described the entire tour in a fair amount of detail. However, in the end I appreciated the thoroughness of the description.

The only real weak point was that it left me wishing that there had been more photographs of the playbills, medallions, and etchings which are mentioned in the text. But other than that, it is definitely worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully entertaining and enlightening read!.......2005-09-02

Glynis Ridley has written a delightful book, informative, entertaining, and sparkling with fascinating insights into everything from the travel habits of 18th-century Europeans to the Biblical iconography of the rhino. This is a must read for anyone interested in Europe in the age of Enlightenment.

4 out of 5 stars "Clara's Grand Tour" - A Good Read.......2005-06-15

As an endangered species program manager, "Clara's Grand Tour" provided me with intriguing insights into the historical captive maintenance and display of a species now considered to be endangered. Ridley, using historical references and subsequent narratives on Clara's travels, does a fair job of synthesizing the information. (I applaud her on her efforts to appreciate the difficulities inherent in rhino captive maintenance; her visit(s) to the Cincinnati Zoo rhino collection was admirable!) Ridley attempts to fill in the blanks where the record is incomplete; her discussions of similar period ventures with other rhinos are particularly insightful. I also enjoyed the portions of the book that describe early animal collections, efforts to describe the species, early natural history writers, etc. Ridley's writing style/technique at times left me wondering, though. For example, in Chapter 1, Ridley describes a "renaissance of interest" in classical Graeco-Roman texts describing various species. She goes on to describe the unavailability of specimens to validate these textual descriptions, stating that African animals brought from the interior were generally unavailable for viewing because they were single specimens "conspicuously lacking in the sort of bulk and ferocity that made transportation overland both time-consuming and complex." I don't get this. While there are a few other places containing similarly garbled trains of thought, perhaps one of the most egregious oversights in this book is the failure of the author to include illustrations of Van de Meer's original souvenir posters and coins. With this being said, I did enjoy the book, plan to re-read it, and look forward to reading some of the additional cited references. I believe that this book rates three or four stars, and give it four largely for content.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing the Rhinoceros to Europe.......2005-04-19

If you can't get to the zoo, you can at least turn on the Discovery Channel, or a lot of others, and see scary, huge, exotic beasts that have no chance of showing up in your home town. In the eighteenth century, however, the options were quite a bit less, and so an enterprising fellow with a rhinoceros might be able to make an impression. In the case of Douwemout Van der Meer, and his rhinoceros Clara, he not only made an impression all over Europe, he substantially changed the science and art of the time, and he made a fortune. A curious book, _Clara's Grand Tour: Travels with a Rhinoceros in Eighteenth Century Europe_ (Atlantic Monthly Press) by Glynis Ridley now tells the story, an odd one about a strange and distant time, and about a strange endeavor. There are gaps in the story, because Van der Meer did not keep a journal, but Ridley has also included diverting details about the cities Clara visits and the people she meets. The result is an engaging history, and one more valuable look at how humans get along with animals.

Clara's mother was shot when Clara was but a few months old in India, and the sea captain Van der Meer purchased her, thinking that she would make his fortune. He sailed with her back to his home in Holland, and with Clara safely transported, he left the Dutch East India Company to get on with what would be his real career. He was an ingenious showman, who used many techniques that would be familiar in modern spectacles. He had posters printed up beforehand to announce Clara's arrival, and would sell copies of the poster to anyone who paid to see her. There were also more elaborate or detailed pictures for the better-off to buy, ranging from woodcuts to engravings to commemorative medals in tin or silver. Clara seems to have been cared for with genuine affection. She lived on hay and grass (150 pounds a day), with bread and beer being special treats. She was attracted to the smell of tobacco, and could be easily led by the temptation of an orange.

Clara toured throughout Europe starting in 1741, with various home visits to Leiden, and died on tour in London in 1758. At her death, she probably became the subject of anatomists, and Van der Meer went back home. Significantly, there are no written records of him after Clara's death. It is to be assumed that he retired on his profits. He and Clara had accomplished a good deal more than just making money, however, as this happy and enthralling narrative make clear. They were making an appeal to popular curiosity, which is an amiable enough trait, and they satisfied it, but they also satisfied the artists and naturalists who came to check her out. They had expanded human knowledge, making the rhinoceros so well known that Boswell could report in agreement that someone had said that Dr. Johnson "laughs like a rhinoceros," and could count on people being amused at the simile. Ridley's book happily lets us rejoin in the enlightenment which Clara brought.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up to date.......2004-03-31

My wife and I travel to Atlantic Canada every summer. We have used a variety of guidebooks including this one, which is definitely our favorite. The authors have obviously spent a lot of time in the region, and as a result they have come up with a good range of places to see, things to do, and where to stay and eat.

The reccommendations of where to stay are particularly helpful. We find the provincial tourist guides good, but their accommodation listings won't really tell you which are good or bad. This book does, and we find the reviews both accurate and very helpful. Seafood is the favorite food around Atlantic Canada, and the authors have obviously enjoyed researching this section of the book, with choices we rarely find fault with.

Also importantly, the book is very well organized and easy to find your way around. There are no color photos, which is a shame, but otherwise, this book is a worthwhile investment if you're traveling to this part of Canada.

4 out of 5 stars Though Slightly Flawed, Still My First Choice for Maritime C.......2001-10-22

Mark Morris has produced an extremely helpful travel guide on Atlantic Canada. This Moon Travel Handbook has a solid introduction section that covers the region's land, ecology, history, government, economy, climate etc.

Each Province is covered succinctly and Mark Morris' information and recommendations are helpful, but his restaurant comments could be more critically informative, ie. "the food is well prepared" (what the heck does that tell me?) or "the seating is smoothingly refined" (huh?). Also, because the publication date is 1999 (thus the information is pre '99) I found some restaurants and inns closed or sold. As a whole, accommodations prices have increased an average of 15% to 20%.

Maps are an essential and critically important aspect of any guide. The maps in this guide are easy to read but lack the user friendly aspect of locating the recommended restaurants and accommodations on the maps.

A area that has become as essential as address and phone numbers is email/web site addresses. A time and significant cost saver especially for up-to-date information and accommodation quotes and reservations. I am sure this will be addressed when the next edition comes out.

Though slightly flawed due to the date, lack of user friendly maps and absence of Internet information, this guide is still my first choice for Maritime Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador. You will not regret this purchase. Recommend 3.5 Stars

4 out of 5 stars A rare insight into the tribal life of Australian Aborigines.......2000-01-02

This book was recommended to me by an Australian Government Minister to convince me that aboriginal people in 1875 needed to be rescued from their primitive conditions. It is funny how two people can read the same book and come to opposite conclusions. This is the story of two shipwrecked boys, rescued from certain death on two occasions by the aborigines who looked after them until they were able to find a ship to take them home to their families. Aboriginal technology may have been inferior, but their knowledge of how to survive without western technology was vastly superior to the European. More importantly, the compassion and assistance shown by the aborigines to these boys is what one would like to think civilization is all about. A fascinating story, with insights into tribal life at that time, and the aboriginal concept of land ownership.

I'm in my senior year of advertising and this book helps me understand and analyze deeply some incredibly smart ad campaigns. From Absolut Vodka to Volkswagen, these campaigns (some quite know, others should be for their witty strategy) will help anyone who wants to understand different concepts of different products. A definite two thumbs up! About the structure, its layout is very organized, the images and the content is great (I love the original sketches for the print ads and the storyboards) and the fact that it's hardcovered makes it even better.

2 out of 5 stars Vastly Inflated Prices, even by 2007 standards.......2007-03-18

I have multiple editions of this book, and I have always enjoyed them. However, after years of collecting autographs, I have come to the conclusion that the prices they list have no basis in reality. They are usually highly inflated. I would guess the prices are what dealers would like to get for their autographs, but I don't think they usually do.

              3 out of 5 stars No Sports.......2007-01-16

Disappointed that it didn't contain any information on collecting sports stars autographs. Will have to purchase another one for that information

              5 out of 5 stars Enhanced Lists.......2006-08-05

I have past versions of this excellent reference but this one includes more of the signatures that I have that previously were not included.
              Thanks for expanding your lists.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic value.......2006-03-09

love the book, love the service, love the convenience. It is an invaluable resource for anyone that might be the least bit interested in purchasing autographs.

5 out of 5 stars It is about time.......2004-08-05

There are no more precious artifacts in human history then the primary sources dealing in the written word. Historic letters, manuscripts and documents are the cornerstones of civilization and the best "collectible" investment on the market. For all too long the "Autograph" Ephemera field has lacked a true and consistant indicator of signed letters, manuscripts and documents value until this new issue of Sanders Price Guide. When a client calls me and asks what the value is of an autographed document I now refer them to this Price Guide - Period. Hats to Richard Saffro, Jim Smith and the Price Guide Researchers.

Sanders are THE experts in autograph pricing and have been for years, this edition had chapters on matting and framing your collection, with web sites to get tools and materials, also a chapter on internet auctions and watching out for forgeries which are prolific on the web. If you collect autographs, this book is a must!

1 out of 5 stars Disapointed in the lack of information.......1999-10-05

I waited a long time for this new edition to come out and it is a whopping 700 pages but, it spends half of its content lamenting the loss of the original author who died last year and reprinting articles I have from earlier editions. The names were updated abit but the prices still seem inacurate. A disapointing end to a once prolific career for the author.

                                Book Description

The revival of the Olympic Games in 1896 was just one result of the unparalleled interest in physical culture that consumed Europe and America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Various national physical education movements enjoyed extraordinary success, including the German Turnverein, the Czech Sokol, and Scouting in England and America. Dance, outdoor spectacle, and massive political rallies reflected the turn away from language toward more gestural, mythic, and body-oriented ways of communicating. This preoccupation with physicality could be seen in the era's growing exultation in war, blood sport, and high adventure -- and, in its most extreme form, in the racist cult of the body emerging in Hitler's Germany.

In Body Ascendant, Harold Segel shows that this obsession with physical culture resonated widely through the modernist movement and traces its profound influence on the arts in the early twentieth century. Segel examines the emergence of modern dance and its impact on virtually all the other arts. He describes the shift from speech to gesture in modern drama and the revival of serious artistic interest in pantomime, a trend that culminated in Max Reinhardt's spectacular productions of The Miracle in London and New York. And he shows how bold attempts to revitalize literary language paralleled a new emphasis on the direct experience of the writer -- the more adventurous the life, the greater the literary appeal.

Characterizing the modernist man of letters as a self-styled man of action, Segel reviews the careers of such writers as Gabriele D'Annunzio, F. T. Marinetti, Nikolai Gumilyov, Ernst Jünger, Ernest Hemingway, Henry de Montherlant, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. He offers a broad overview of the various manifestations of the modernist preoccupation with physicality, including the disparagement of Christianity and Judaism for their focus on spiritual life. He clearly establishes the disturbing compatibility between the era's artistic and athletic celebration of body and the eventual rise of totalitarian nationalism and racism. The dark side of Nazi emphasis on physical perfection as essential to ideal Germanness, Segel notes, was the consistent portrayal of the Jew as physically and racially inferior.

                                Book Description

Trackers is a gritty and moving story that reveals the Australian Army's little-known use of combat tracker dogs during the Vietnam War. A war veteran tells his story with vivid and compelling immediacy, blending the terror of hunting and encountering the elusive Viet Cong with the tender relationship between a naive young Australian soldier and his dog. A graphic portrayal of the timeless reality of war—the horror, the madness, the tedium, the dark humour—Trackers hurls you into a surreal world of seething jungles, random minefields, and lethal friendly fire. Amid the mayhem, the author finds vital refuge in the innocence of his larrikin labrador-kelpie cross, Caesar. Also an human interest story with enormous widespread appeal, both men and women of all ages will be touched by this special bond between man and dog.

5 out of 5 stars something for everyone.......2004-06-02

What a fantastic book! I had no idea dogs played a role like this in the war. Whether your interested in war, working dogs or just want to read a great story i would recommend this book. Pete describes perfectly the innocent nature of a dog even in these extreme circumstances. I can't say enough good things about Tracker's so just pick it up and enjoy.....

5 out of 5 stars well written book of the australian tracker dog teams.......2003-01-02

wonderfully written book of the australian involvement of tracker dog teams in vietnam...thousands of allied lives were saved through the relationship built by the tracker dogs and handlers, together with the scout, sentry, mine, tunnel, booby trap, and other military working dog teams...over 4,000 dogs and in excess of 10,000 handlers kept our troops safe....the lives of our allied military forces depended on the trust built between handler and dog....

                                5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2001-10-24

I love books written by people who have been in the working dog field with dogs such as Service Dogs of the Police,Military working roles. I personally find books written on the obedience trailling and Schuzhund competitions basically repetitive and in the main, boring.

Service work and associated training to me, is the real world of dog training, I enjoy competition and encourage people to compete. But I get tired of the never ending waffle of the best way to train involving food, toys, clickers, working in drives etc.

This book is excellent taking one into the real world of extreme dangers of the Vietnam war. Well written, reviting, and refreshing after the waffle of other dog books.Well done Peter. ...

                                5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-05-22

I have read numerous books about war dogs. This is by far my favorite. I was totally engrossed from beginning to end. The book will make you laugh and a few pages later make you cry. Mr. Haran's accounts of his experiences in training tracker dogs for Vietnam, and doing two tours as a dog handler in the "J" (jungle), really bring home the effectiveness of man-dog teams and illustrate the deep bonds that develop between the two forged under fire. I can't say enough good things about this book. If you are a dog lover, or if you're interested in war dogs at all, you should read this book. You won't be disappointed.
