Canada is so close to where I live, however, I don't know enough about the destination to truly feel that I will experience all that it has to offer. This guidebook helped me to plan out exactly what I felt would be worthwhile for me. I've got a great itinerary put together in anticipation of a great trip.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating story with fabulous illustrations!.......2000-05-23

This book captures the true story of a young Alaska native girl growing up in a family devoted to the old Tlingit customs but still adapting (if often reluctantly) to the ways of the whites increasingly dominating their world. More a set of stories than a single narrative, it includes retellings of several folk tales, historical details of how the Tlingit lived, and a lot of beautiful drawings I spent many childhood afternoons trying to copy.

My grandmother gave me an earlier edition of this book when I was nine, and by the time I turned thirteen I'd read it so many times it literally fell apart. I still have it and enjoy rereading it.

      Book Description

First published in 1936, this is the story of Elizabeth von Arnim's extraordinary life and her equally extraordinary dogs. From her Pomeranian idyll (celebrated in her famous first novel Elizabeth and Her German Garden) to less happy days in London following the death of her first husband, from the beautiful solitude of her Swiss-mountain hideaway, to the First World War and a disastrous second marriage, the author takes us on a disarmingly witty and poignant journey of canine companionship.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Edwardian author writes biography... of her dogs.......2004-11-15

Elizabeth von Arnim lived an unconventional life, shot through with both tragedy and personal success. It is characteristic of the sense of humor found in her writing that she should ignore the sparkling social circle of which she was a part at the turn of the century and choose instead to write the lives of her dogs.

Throughout the book we are given tantalising glimpses of the turbulance - and joy - of von Arnim's wider experiences. This short work will delight both dog-lovers and fans of the author

5 out of 5 stars For the love of dogs.......2004-03-09

This book is a throughly charming account of Elizabeth von Arnim's sometimes idyllic, sometimes challenging but always witty and amusing life with her beloved dogs. Her writing reflects the experiences of her happy days in Germany with her older husband, five children, and the beginning of many canine characters that inhabit her life. Elizabeth is widowed and moves on to England, Switzerland, and Provence. Each new stage of her life includes new dogs and many funny and poignant memories. She clearly loves her many dogs- some stand out among all of them as her favorites- and shares her life as enriched and enlivened by her dogs' companionship. Anyone who has ever loved and lost a dog will appreciate her regard and love of dogs.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-02-23

I own all 21 of Elizabeth's book..am trying to replace the ones that were water damaged. I would highly recommend any books written by this author

      4 out of 5 stars A delightfully doggy autobiography.......1997-12-13

I loved this book! I have bought several copies to give as gifts, but will keep one for myself to re-read. Elizabeth von Armin's relationship with the people, dogs, and houses in her life is recounted with a great deal of charm, wit, and droll humor.

                          Book Description

In 1933, the Ingersoll-Waterbury Company produced a round Mickey Mouse wristwatch that is considered to be the first comic character watch. It started a movement that has continued for ninety years and shows little sign of letting up. This new and delightful book covers the history of character timepieces from the earliest clocks to the present day quartz wristwatches. With hundreds of beautiful color photographs it is a celebration of American imagination and artistry. Nearly every character watch from 1933 to 1972 is included, with some that have never before been reproduced in print. From 1972 to the present a wide selection of some of the best and most desirable of the 5000+ watches produced will jump off the page at you. Also covered are packaging, advertisements, and some of the ephemera developed with the watches. Organized chronologically, the book is divided into nine chapters. While principally concerned with wristwatches, each chapter also deals with pocket watches and clocks. The examples in the chapter are arranged alphabetically for each reference. At the end of each chapter is a section of lists to help the collector start his collection. A value guide is included. This book is written to enlighten, illuminate, and induce others to enjoy the comic watch hobby. A fun but important book for serious collectors, watch dealers, and students of Americana.

                          Book Description

Louisiana irises have been hybridized from five species of Iris found only in North America, most specifically in Louisiana. Their boggy native habitats have largely been destroyed, and horticulturists' preservation efforts have gone toward the creation of an incredible range of hybrids in a variety of colors, forms, and sizes. They have proved adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates, needing only sun, ample water, and neutral soil to thrive; they can be grown in beds with annuals and other perennials, or in water up to a foot deep.

                            Book Description

In the three books of his Contra Rufinum, a work dating back to his mature period (401-402), Jerome (ca 347-420) fought against his erstwhile friend turned rival, Rufinus: the two Latin monks, one settled in Bethlehem, the other in Jerusalem, had come to confront each other on such issues as the timeliness and ways (translation, commentary...) of transmitting an Oriental heritage to the West, Greek (in particular the works of Origen [ca. 185-ca. 253], whose Peri Archon they both translated in competition) as well as Jewish (the biblical hebraica veritas which Jerome championed). They were also at variance on the appreciation of profane culture (the Latin classics). Jerome's Contra Rufinum is a masterpiece by a brilliant polemist and an important document as to a knowledge of the actors and the vicissitudes of a controversy which mobilised many Christians, Eastern and Western alike, on the eve of the sacking of Rome by the Barbarians. This commentary seeks to analyse the treatise in all its facets (historical and theological, philological and rhetorical), and to elucidate its connections with the different traditions (classical, biblical, patristic) to which it belongs. The Contra Rufinum thus turns out to be a remarkable vantage point from which to illuminate the entire corpus of an author whose work, spread over nearly half a century, was immensely influential during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

                              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book.......1999-08-15

Dallal gives us a warm, exciting glimpse into adventures most of us will never experience, and a world we often do not understand. Informative, enteraining, and an easy read, I recommend this book to any one who enjoys the travelogue genre.

4 out of 5 stars good travel book.......1999-03-29

Interesting concept--a young middle class american girl, travels to Columbia---to belly dance.Big contradiction--she happens to be (a) naive (b)a feminist(c)unware of how attractive she is.Makes for a decent story, writing seems to be a bit uneven, but good visuals overall

5 out of 5 stars Funny and deeply personal. An unforgettable novel........1998-09-23

Lily Brett has written a novel that makes you laugh and cry in turns. Things Could Be Worse captures the life of a child of two Holocaust survivors.

The novel explores many themes such as; the impact of the Holocaust not only on survivors, but their children; growing up as a migrant in Melbourne and; the struggle to find identity and happiness. The characters are brilliantly illustrated by David Rankin, an artist and the author's husband.

Every word and picture in the book rings true, and it gives an insight on what, for most of us, would be unimaginable. A truly wonderful book.
