Book Description
The aim of the Controlled Reproduction in Farm Animals Series is to provide a general review of the literature dealing with the different ways in which reproduction in the major farm mammals can be controlled and manipulated. It is effectively an expanded and new edition of a previous work, Controlled Breeding in Farm Animals (Pergamon Press, 1983). However, the literature on this subject has expanded so rapidly since the time of the earlier volume, that it is now thought appropriate to publish it in four separate volumes. Buffalo, goats, deer, and camelids have also been added to the species covered. The set of volumes will appeal to reproductive physiologists, animal scientists, and workers in veterinary medicine. Individual volumes should also be of value to all interested in the particular species covered.

Niall and Christine left their careers in New York City for a simpler, more authentic life in a cottage outside the tiny village of Kilmihil in County Clare.

Customer Reviews:
Irish Paperback.......2007-09-25
This book was interesting as I am married to an Irish woman and we travel to Ireland often. The descriptions of everyday life in Ireland are grand and are usually explained as compared to life in the states. It's not a very humourous book, but worth resding if you long for Ireland.
I had to buy all four!.......2004-09-23
Before I knew it, I was done with this book and on-line ordering all three of Niall Williams' next books. Rather than just another quaint book about "the Irish", this book weaves a funny and entertaining story of two Americans trying to fit-in in rural west Ireland. From learning the customs to waiting to get a party-line phone, there was a smile on every page.
Decent story of western Ireland.......2004-06-05
I am planning a trip to Ireland and always enjoy reading some books set in the place I am visiting. This story of a couple who moves to Ireland definitely gave a feel for the place. Both the material poverty but social richness.
It took me back to County Clare.......2001-12-21
When I traveled to Ireland two years ago and felt like I'd "come home" from the beautiful scenery (I never knew there could be *that* many shades of green) to the friendly people, to the rather mystical appearance of a Dolmen-shaped cloud in the sky just after we had viewed Dolmen in north County Clare, the experience was one I will not only never forget but hope to repeat sometime soon. During this time it was County Clare which spoke to me most of all.
Niall Williams, born in Dublin and Christine Breen, from New York, have left their Manhattan home to move to County Clare and into the cottage where Chris's grandfather was born. The struggles and triumphs of their first year are engagingly told in this wonderful little book. I was able to be transported back to the rural west of Ireland I learned to love in just a few short days.
In leaving their jobs and friends in Manhattan, Niall and Chris took a very big risk. To go to a place with no central heating, a telephone out of the early 20th C., and to one of the wettest summers on record took real courage. They quickly fit right in with their neighbors and by the time they host a New Years Eve party they are definitely one of "them."
If you're an armchair traveler, someone who's visited the Emerald Isle, or just hope to someday, this is a story to cherish. I have also now read their book of travel essays and am awaiting arrival of their other two books which I have recently ordered.
Although I am too old to do what Niall and Chris have done, it's great to live vicariously through them! Well done!
Charming and well written, but ..........2001-10-23
This is a beautifully written book, full of charming stories and vivid descriptions (as one might expect from a writer/artist team), and the story of their bumpy and circuitous settling-in process on a farm in rural Co. Clare is well told. However, I found the book irritating and didn't even finish it. I had expected to like it, as I've traveled in that part of Ireland (I have roots in Co. Mayo) and enjoyed it immensely, so I was surprised by my negative reaction. After some thought, I realized why I felt that way: the authors came to Co. Clare with clearly defined expectations about why they were going there and what their life there would be like. So, from Day One, they were continually measuring the reality against those (understandably optimistic) expectations and finding it wanting. As a veteran of many moves, including a trans-Atlantic one, I feel that this is the completely wrong approach to starting life in a new place. If you come with an open mind, take the place and the people on their own terms, and learn how to find what you want within those parameters, you'll enjoy your new life much more. (And, often, you'll find that the place has pleasant surprises you didn't even know to look for until you'd been there a while.) The book is still worth reading for the descriptions, but an expatriates' guide it's definitely not.

Book Description
An important, but often overlooked, part of the world of Japanese arts and crafts is the array of beautiful, stylized motifs that have traditionally been used to decorate a huge range of objects. Snow, Wave, Pine takes a close look at some of the most classic of those patterns, enabling the
reader to recognize and appreciate these motifs wherever they appear, and providing inspiration to anyone interested in design or arts and crafts.
The first half of the book introduces seventy-five important patterns, as depicted on a variety of objects. Seeing the "lotus blossom" or "flowing water" patterns, for instance, on antiques including brocaded kabuki robes, lacquerware trays, and metal sword guards throws into relief the patterns
themselves, rather than the objects, making possible a new level of understanding and enjoyment. The informative text describes how each pattern arose, and the significance it had in terms of art, religion, and even politics. The reader has a sense of being empowered to look at any Japanese art,
craft or design form with a new and educated eye.
The second half of the book shows a rich and dynamic selection of more than one thousand family crests. Crests are very stylized motifs whose variety and artistry are remarkable. With a minimum of lines, they are able to express the essence of such forms as a pair of facing crows with wings
outstretched; the rounded back of a monkey viewed from behind as it sits hunched over, alone; or the elegant single counter-clockwise whorl. Despite being hundreds of years old, they are extremely modern in their sensibility.
Lavishly illustrated with over 450 color plates, and with text and photos alike by experts in the traditional Japanese arts, Snow, Wave, Pine is a treasurehouse of information for anyone interested in design forms or in Japanese culture.
Customer Reviews:
Marvellous.......2007-09-07
The book is wonderful! Reach in picture and well structured. There is little research, but i'm proud i've bought it. It's really useful to my study.
The beautiful traditions of Japan........2005-11-06
Mr. Hibi and Mr Niwa, wrote this book, which has fantastic pictures of a variety of patterns used in Japanese Designs. I have used this book as reference for my students, and I strongly recommend this book for Japanese artist lovers. It has more pictures than detailed written research. However all in all it is a great package.
Nice, but..........2003-10-01
The photographs are wonderful, the book is classy. The text is kept short to not interfere with the pictures.
A bit too compressed, in my opionion. I would have liked more than four lines of text telling me that something is often depicted.
It's a wonderful book to have it displayed on a table, and to show off a little bit, but that's not the reason why I buy books...
Beauties to Behold.......2002-09-08
This eye-filling book clearly illustrates the rich symbolism of Japanese design. Though not meant as an all-inclusive guide to Japanese arts, the pictorial choices are wonderful. Each design "theme" is accompained by brief but highly informative text. There is also a generous selection of family crests (mon), which would be of particular interest to kimono enthusiasts. This color-saturated album is a joy to look at and would complement Merrily Baird's more complete and scholarly tome, "Symbols of Japan," which, though awesomely researched, has rather weak illustrations in several sections.
Customer Reviews:
Everyone Will Love!.......2006-05-03
My students absolutely love this book! Not only are the photos adorable, but they teach valuable life lessons in a great, child-friendly way. Some of the pictures will make you go, "Ahhh" while others will make you laugh. This is a great book for any classroom or home, whether it is used to teach or just enjoy.

Already known and appreciated for his books on borders and Sissinghurst, Tony Lord reveals yet another area of expertise here in Designing with Roses. A homage to "the queen of flowers," this is also a plea for an end to its misuse, with Lord demonstrating its versatility in borders or pots, on walls and fences, alone or in main or supporting roles. These sweeping concepts are then fleshed out with detailed information on shape, color, scent, foliage, immunity levels, form, and flowering times. He writes for a worldwide audience, taking into account local climates and native plants, and his attention to detail continues beyond the plants themselves. When he looks at pergolas, for instance, he is informative about possible sites, materials, proportions, and construction.
Designing with Roses's well-researched, flowing prose is interspersed with the author's own stunning photographs. It will captivate readers of all levels of expertise, to whom Lord throws out a general challenge to develop a practical aesthetic of roses that balances design with nature. Finally, the bibliography, international list of nurseries, explanation of zones, and invaluable list of strain characteristics leave the reader full of inspiration and equipped with the tools for pursuing the dream. --Fiona Murphy

Graceful in habit and lush in bloom, with a sumptuous variety of color and scent, roses are perhaps the most pleasing element in any garden. In Designing with Roses, the remarkable versatility of these plants is at last fully explored. Whether in a mixed border or a pot, a flower garden or kitchen plot, an urban terrace or a rural expanse, Tony Lord dramatically illustrates the rose's potential as an elegant climber, screen, enclosure, and container plant. Completing the book are a detailed directory of the best rose varieties for each purpose and site as well as a list of suitable companion plants. A welcome, long-overdue contribution to gardening literature. Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous, Interesting, Inspiring,.......2005-02-02
Lord is a consummate garden photographer, and here we will find many of his best rose photos. For roses one would use in the landscape, this may be the best source of photos.
In this book he takes us through a kind of history of the way roses have been used in gardens. The nice thing about a history such as this is that we get introduced to a number of old design ideas which today may be out of favor. In some cases they are out of favor for very good reasons - as Lord explains: After WW1 the cost of labor went up significantly. One could no longer afford to have a gardener spend half a day training a long-caned rose onto an onion shaped frame. Yet even the oddest of the old ideas will frequently suggest some interesting or useful contemporary practice.
Of the gardening books I own - about 15 shelf feet of them - this may be the one I have spent most time with just reading through. This is high praise, indeed.
Any person who wishes to integrate roses into the design of a garden would do well to read this book. It has a lot to say on garden structure and how various roses occupy the diverse structural niches in a garden.
It even explains why Christopher Lloyd eschews the rose at his world famous gardens at Great Dixter. Now that is something that every person planning a rose garden must read and understand.
The garden: it's not just a bed or roses. Lord helps us understand this.
Not just pretty pictures.......2002-10-27
This book has a lot of gorgeous 'rose porn' photographs, but the text is also very informative and gives good, specific suggestions for maximizing the beauty of roses in the landscape. I was able to get ideas on how to incorporate roses in beds of mixed perennials in a sophisticated way. I found the section on the history of the use of roses also very interesting.
Beautiful book.......1999-11-02
This is a wonderful book with gorgeous color photographs of rose gardens that will make you drool. Although most of the gardens are in England, any gardener can gets ideas from this book. It is basically a "coffee table" type book and is one that you can get lost in on a rainy day. I would highly recommend it!
If you love rose-gardening...this is a must-have publication.......1999-06-17
I received an advance copy of Tony Lord's new book, "Designing with Roses". Besides being a wonderful rose feast for the eyes this 185 page book has some great ideas for various types of gardens and gardening techniques. This versatile offering has chapters lovingly decorated with lush photography of 'Roses for Structure', 'Roses as Punctuation', 'Roses in Mixed Borders' and 'Roses for Wild Gardens'. At the very end of the book is a wonderful listing of roses for special purposes that Mr. Lord describes as Pick of the Bunch. Here is a marvelous grouping of roses for ground covers, bush roses (short & tall), shrub roses, climbing, roses for arcades, pergolas, and catenaries, roses for autumn color, roses for bedding, roses for colored foliage, roses for conservatories, roses for cutting, roses for fences, roses for fragrance, roses for hedges, roses for pillars, roses for shade, roses for standards, and more. Thirteen pages of detailed information listing color, hardiness zone and class. Roses that have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit as plants of excellence and easy culture are also indicated. In 185 pages I counted only about 10 pages that didn't have at least one picture on them. There are many double pages of photography that makes you feel as if your face was pressed against a window looking out into a wonderland of roses. Breathtaking close-up photography makes you think you can actually smell these beauties. The Pick of the Bunch alone makes this book a worthy addition to any roseaholic's library. If you are a Consulting Rosarian, these lists make it a lot easier to suggest roses for special purposes when you are asked by other rose growers.

Book Description
This book also traces the evolution of the Spanish Dance technique, marked as it is by a turbulent history.
Antonio Triana was a dancer of mature artistry, dignity and power. His physical and technical achievements went beyond what is generally known about Spanish Dance. His dance presented the essence of the Spanish character and, in his choreography, he used his traditional background for his brilliant inspirations. He partnered the legendary La Argentinita, Pilar Lopez and Carmen Amaya with spirit and gallantry. Over the years he developed a very distinct method of teaching and he became one of the foremost Spanish Flamenco dancers and teachers of his time.
Rita Vega de Triana formed the Triana Ballet Español with her late husband. She currently teaches Hispanic dance and related subjects at the University of Texas at El Paso and directs her own school as well as performing around the United States as a guest artist and choreographer.
Customer Reviews:
Great reading, interesting photos........1999-06-24
Well written account of Flamenco and Spanish dance in the early half of this century. Triana an obviously very talented individual caught up in the throes of the other inspired artists of the time. Extremely interesting, however polished storyline.
Book Description
Twenty-five years after he left Vietnam and his Montagnard tribesmen, Australian Barry Petersen wrote this thoughtful story of his life among the Rhade and other ethnic groups of Darlac province in the Vietnam highlands. He went there to train and lead the local people to defend their villages form the Viet-Cong. This is the story of the Truong Son, 'Tiger Men', who became the most respected and feared self-defense force in Vietnam. But it also the sad story of their susequent defeat and the desctructionof their Montagnard villages, culture and way of life - as much due to the Vietnamese and American generals and politicians as to the Viet-Cong. This is a book that the CIA would rather not see in print.
Customer Reviews:
Straight From The Heart.......2007-06-22
Being the first book I've ever read on a young Australian's Vietnam War experiences, I was struck by his ability to recount his extraordinary experiences in such an intimate manner. Possessing some back-ground knowledge on the events of the period covered in the book, I felt a particular affinity with the writer. No doubt, a professional "ghost-writer" would have portrayed the experiences differently, however, Barry Petersen's "straight-from-the-heart" approach says it all - and very effectively so.
Barry Petersen,Special Forces Soldier,Vietnam........2005-10-29
Barry Petersen is one of the most fascinating people that I have ever met.My Dad (an ex-soldier) and I drank a lot of beer and heard a lot of stories from Baz,as he was our neighbour. All of them check out,in fact Baz was quite modest about his experiences.
In the official history of Australian Special Forces in Vietnam,Barry is the only person with a chapter to himself.Special Forces soldiers that I have met testify to his skill, bravery and compassion for his private Montagnard army.
This is a riveting account of a little-known part of the Vietnam conflict from a tough, intelligent likeable writer and a brave and modest soldier.
Thoroughly recommended to anyone with an interest in the war and the Vietnamese people.
