Paris For Dummies.......2007-08-23
I just got back from Paris and I used this book everyday. It was very helpful
I Wish I had this book in 1996!.......2007-07-11
I went to Paris, France in 1996. It was a dream come true. I didn't have a guide book of the city and I think this book would have been quite useful if I had to choose about books for Paris, France. One of the American writers, Janet Flanner also known as Genet, wrote from Paris' Hotel Continental for decades. Now that I have this book, I pick it up to look and read about a location, a restaurant, an attraction, etc. What troubled me the most about my trip to Paris was the panhandlers, the homeless children, and the beggars during the hot summertime. I suggest that Paris is not the place to be during a heatwave. Most attractions and Parisian hotels don't have air-conditioning. Maybe that's changed since my last visit. Oh, I yearn to go back again and this book makes me want to go more than ever.
Take It To Paris.......2007-05-19
Excellent, well-written, with a great deal of practical, currrent information , a treasure to take with you to Paris
Keeping up the "Dummies" excellence....!.......2006-12-25
My wife and I (very unitiated to Paris) returned from a beautiful trip there last November -- a large part of that due to this book. Ms. Pientka really tries hard to let you get the well known and not so well known of the city and explains the pros/cons to areas so incredibly well. Other books might have more specifics about attractions, but they won't be as comrpehensive as this one. We loved her restaurant choices (even as Vegeterians she had some places for us!). The book was the basis for our trip and we felt we hit everything we wanted (included an out of the way flea market -- my wife loves going to them here and was excited to learn that one happens on the weekends in Paris). The only cons were that it would have been nice to have metro stops (and lines) listed next to each entry and her hotel list could have been more comprehensive. We booked a hotel on our own (not in her book) and loved it. Whether you are going to be in the City of Lights for a 2-3 days or a month, you will love this book.
Worth it.......2004-05-11
A great all round guide, took the guesswork out of most aspects of the trip. If you take time to read and digest this book, this may be the only reference guide you will ever need (plus a decent map like the Streetwise) -- especially if you are going for the first time. We went to two of the restaurants mentioned in this book and they were both top notch, with excellent food and service (in English) and low prices -- a definite rarity in Paris. That alone paid for the book twice over. Also, the walking guides and tips were very useful in planning our days.
In fact, the only advice in this book that I'd disagree with would be "Tips for dressing" -- I wore ratty jeans with black sneakers all through, even to the decent restaurants, and found to my surprise that so did everyone else. In fact it makes you fit in better with local young and the hip :-)

Book Description
Every object has a skin. Thick or thin, smooth or rough, porous or impermeable, the skin is the line between the hidden inside and the outside we experience. Skin: Surface, Substance, and Design presents products, furniture, fashion, architecture, and media that are expanding the limits of what we understand as surface. Reflecting the convergence of natural and artificial life, this provocative and stimulating book shows how enhanced and simulated skins appear everywhere in our contemporary world. Designers today manipulate the relationship between the inside and outside of objects, garments, and buildings, creating skins that both reveal and conceal, skins that have depth and complexity as well as their own behaviors and identities.
Skin features the work of such notable designers and architects as Greg Lynn, Petra Blaisse, SPEEDO, Morphosis, Ross Lovegrove, Marcel Wanders, and many others. It also contains essays on artificial skin and digital surfaces, and a glossary of surface materials. It reminds us that beauty is indeed only skin-deep. This book accompanies a major exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York.
Customer Reviews:
dee liscious.......2003-08-26
a little on the ind. design side of things, but a wonderful visceral survey of surface distinction.
Great Images.......2002-11-26
This book has exellent images but it lacks text, "A picture is worth a thousand words" as they say. Although there is lack of text I think there's just enough to give you an idea of what the products are, who the designers and manufacturers are too. So the book acts almost as a catalog. All in all I think it's a great book, it's enjoyable to flip through or it could take you an hour looking at just one product. Oh and just incase you don't know what the book is about it displays different "Skin" conditions (that is different surface materials either conventional or inovative used on a wide range of products including chairs and clothes)
ENJOY :-)

Chameleons.......2006-11-04
I really liked this book in my quest for the perfect chameleon for me and my family. I was originally overwhelmed by the numerous species of animals to chose from. After reading about the different chameleons available and what kind of care they needed it made my decision easier to make. In my case, as a beginner with these True Chameleons, I found that the hardier and more easy to handle for me and my children was the best choice. This is a great book and has a lot of useful information on the care of many types of chameleons.
Unaccessible and dull.......2003-07-08
I bought this book to help me create a suitable environment for my veiled chameleon. The information I needed was printed within the pages but it was an extremely dull read. It was common to find scientific jargon without definition. The book is written by scientists whom I'm not convinced even like these wonderful, expressive creatures, it is full of lifeless facts which lead me abandon the book after reading only the pertinent chapters. To my horror, a crucial detail about female chameleon health was only mentioned in the breeding chapter, a chapter I had no need for since I had no intentions of breeding my pet. I found out too late that most female chameleons die egg-bound if unfertilized. Should this information have shown up in the Health chapter (which deals with very little in 4 short pages) my chameleon would still be alive. Previously, I read the entire 280 pages of The tarantula keeper's guide by Stanley A. Schultz, et al, this book is animated and written by a couple who truly love their hobby, it was a pleasure to learn as much about tarantulas as possible. Although, I am sure there is a book out there that does the same for chameleons, this one isn't it.
a helpful guide.......2002-07-16
this is a very good book, a lot of information. a must have for newbies and a good addition to any experienced herpers library
Great source of valueable info unlike other "picturebooks".......1999-02-16
This book is great if you need basic information on a variety of different species. The section on setting up an incubation box is very helpful. Other books that are helpful in this manner are those written by Phillepe de Vosjoli. This books sexing techniques are helpful as well as the glossary of terms it provides and the illustrations of different physical characteristics of chameleons i.e crests and other such protrusions.
Great book!.......1999-01-03
This book was an excellent source of info

Customer Reviews:
Good, not great.......2007-05-18
I will preface this by saying that this is the first book I purchased on this subject, so I don't have a large pool of measurables to compare it to.
That said, there was some good basic information in this book, and it's a good jumping off point. I liked that it gave some general overviews of plants the birds like, and when they bloom, etc.
I would have liked a bit more on the specifics of the birds themselves... but perhaps that's best found in a book specific about birds, as opposed to the gardens that attract them. For some reason, I thought there might be a little more of that included though.
Overall, I'll recommed it. As stated, it's a good place to start, and using this information along with information you get from your local nursery professional should give a place to begin bringing the bird to your yard.
Everything You Need To Know for Under $10!.......2001-09-28
This beautiful little volume is a treasure of information. A concise 80 pages, it's packed with valuable information and 58 photos and illustrations. Including 17 of the most common hummingbirds in the United States and their regions. It provides illustrated landscaping and plant guides for each season and region, with a variety of colors. Red being designated as the color generally drawing hummingbirds first and strongest. This book taught me that hummers prefer the birdbath even more shallow then regular birds. Such a simple thing to correct! I've read several books on hummingbird gardening, but this is the first to encourage "island" planting and "layering" to attract hummingbirds. This book taught me that "island" planting increases the flower-surface area available for hummingbird use. Not only is this beneficial to attracting hummers, but is so beautiful. They encourage gardners to "layer", which is also so pleasing to the eye, not just the birds. The taller plants, in the "layering" technique, provide places for the hummingbirds to hide. Recipes for necter are included, along with instructions for taming! I enjoyed the bit of history the author included too: for ex., thousands of these little birds were exported to England in the 1800's to be added to collections and to be used on ladies hats! This book has taught me more about the hummingbird, it's habits, preferences, etc. then any other I've purchased. Also, it was one of least expensive! This book was so helpful I purchased it's "sister" on attracting butterflies. I highly recommend!
a very basic book.......2001-08-06
This is a very basic book but a good intro to hummingbird gardening. It recommends non-native plants in addition to native ones but you have to do your own research to determine which are which. By the time I bought this book I already knew what they hadto say and was well past it. Its very very basic - has lists of plants and drawings of gardens but doesn't tell much more. Common sense tells you that hummingbirds like flowers that are trumpt shaped and red. Other books can tell you more about the plants and its better to plant native plants anyway since they are "designed" to grow in your area and their blossoms are timed with the hummingbird migration (its the whole interdependency/web of life thing).
Excellent!.......2000-06-08
This is a wonderful book to guide you in planting a garden that will attract hummingbirds. I highly recommend it.

Excellent Resource for Gardeners Who Love Birds.......2005-01-02
This is a very nicely done book. Includes some lovely photographs of gardens and close ups of birds. The information provided is the best part of this book, though. The book starts out by saying that all too often, homeowners hang a pretty painted birdhouse in their yard and sit back and wait for birds to move in. The book then goes on to explain ways to attract birds to your yard that are actually helpful to the health and wellbeing of the birds. The book provides the reader with an understanding of what birds want and need in a habitat.
Lists of recommended plantings, favorite foods by bird species, nest box dimenions by species, and other useful information are included.
I have found myself referring back to this book often as I try each year to make my yard a little more bird friendly - and I've had real success - the number of species that visit my yard have increased with each year.
A great book.......2002-09-16
Based on my own limited experience, I would assume that all gardeners end up being birdwatchers. When I would be out in our garden working, or just sitting in it and enjoying a cool evening, the songs of the birds always added to the experience, and they more and more attracted my attention.
In this wonderful book, the authors tell you everything you need to make your garden a bird-friendly environment, and as such a bird-magnet. Everything is covered herein, including what flowers to plant, what utilities to add (birdbaths, houses, feeders, etc.), and even notes on how to bird watch, and what birds you are likely to see. This is a great book, one that I highly recommend to all fellow gardeners!
MARVELOUS, WONDERFUL, INFORMATIVE, BEAUTIFUL.......2000-04-04
Whether you enjoy gardening or not this is a must have, enjoyable book. Delightful photographs accompanied with informative descriptions regarding the plants that birds love. It also describes what function the plants provide for the birds as well as information on the habits of birds. I would joyfully recommend this book for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

Book Description
This volume is a study of how Targum Lamentations (TgLam) interpreted and responded to the theologically challenging message of the Book of Lamentations. Through various exegetical techniques the targumist has transformed Lamentations into a rabbinic program for the synagogue.
The first section examines how the targumist demonstrated that Israel herself is responsible for the destruction of Jerusalem and thus absolves God of all culpability. Yet the targumist continues to assert that God is the ultimate source of all history. The second section examines how the targumist depicts God as orchestrating events through his action and abstention. Finally, the targum argues that reconciliation with God can only come about through repentance and rabbinic worship.
A new translation and a transcription of TgLam from Codex Urbinas Hebr. 1 is included.

Book Description
Political historians have traditionally interpreted the people and events of each presidential era by studying books, periodicals, letters, diaries and speeches. One source of printed material that has not received much scholarly attention is published music, much of which has been all but lost in the archives of libraries and museums. The traditional librarianly cataloguing of music has ignored important aspects such as lyrical content and cover art, making it impossible to comprehensively locate and study items by subject matter. Presidential Sheet Music presents an exhaustive listing of presidential-related music in all printed forms, and provides information on each piece. Thus may we expand our understanding of political communication and discourse throughout American history. A sizable Introduction discusses matters from the publication in 1768 of The Liberty Song (which formally made music an instrument of political expression in America) to the few 1980s and 1990s presidential songs and marches. There are also helpful appendices which list music by titles, composers, publishers, and candidates.
