Great quick guide for American animals.......2007-05-15

Great quick reference guide for getting to know dangerous animals etc! I am from the UK and recently moved to California, so did not have a clue about the wildlife I would be likely to encounter, so this is great to refer to.

The city of Prague has inspired a lot of fine literature, and Paul Wilson has done the English-speaking world a vast favor by compiling this anthology of 23 Prague stories. There are classics by the likes of Franz Kafka, Jan Neruda, and Ivan Klima, and lesser-known works making their English-translation debuts. Excellent.......2003-06-22

Excellent collection of pieces from obscure writers and celebrated Czech authors. The book is divided into sections for each part of the city (Old Town, Mala Strana, etc.). I've lived in Prague before and it was so much fun following each author around the city again. I recommend this book for anyone enchanted by the idea of Prague or for those who miss it and want to spend some time there with a bunch of amazing tour guides.

Take This Book With You!.......2000-08-09

As we prepared for our trip to Prague, I ordered this book from Amazon.com but didn't get a chance to read until we actually got there. What a treasure! Each piece made some landmark or moment of history come more vividly alive than any of the standard guidebooks could possibly provide. The division of the book into corresponding areas of the city was a great idea.I always look to literature to gain insight into travel destinations. No single book has ever done a better job than this one.

The picture on the front cover says it all - this book might be useful if you are designing or making large Bamboo structures but it gives no advice about using Bamboo to make a real house to live in.

It's not a "How to" book - I can't recommend it.

How can you forget the ZERI Foundation?.......2003-12-30

The book is beautiful, well documented and presents a marvellous insight about the great work of Simon Velez and his colleague Marcelo Villegas.

It is though a mystery that the book simply decides to neglect mentioning the ZERI Foundation and its protagonist Gunter Pauli who prefered to go broke over the initiative, then to drop the ball half way.

Thanks to his determination the full scientific tests on bamboo could be undertaken, the building permit could be obtained for a first time ever in an industrialzed country, and the 6.4 million visitors could admire the masterpiece created by Simon Velez.

One would have expected that an othewise professional publisher like Villegas Editores, who is well aware of the origins of the great building in Hanover would have put reality in balance. After all without this large investment this masterpiece would never have materialized.

It is hoped that the book will quickly sell out, become a great success which it deserves and then this minor error could be corrected.

Best Bamboo Book for Sophisticated Guadua Architecture.......2003-11-06

During the International Bamboo Festival at Fairchild Tropical Gardens in Miami, I had the pleasure of personally meeting Marcelo Villegas. He is truly "el miestro", a master carpenter, who builds some of the most exciting and innovative bamboo buildings in the world. He is soft-spoken, humble, and refers to himself as a simple carpenter, not master.

The book is a great reference for photographs of his most recent exciting work. Bamboo is a natural building material which has some very interesting properties. It is as strong as steel by weight and has incredible strength under tension.

Villegas has a deep understanding for the special type of bamboo he used, Guadua Angustifolia, which is native to his Colombia. He treats each project organically and executes them flawlessly.

He helped build the largest bamboo structure in the world which was tested by German Engineers for the WORLD EXPO in Hannover in 2000. The structure was so strong, according to him, that is surpassed german building codes (the toughest in the world).

This is a MUST buy bamboo book, one you won't regret buying.

A great story, a great writer & naturalist.......2006-11-30

While camping 200 miles north of Toronto, Lawrence rescues 2 wolf pups who are barely two weeks old, their eyes not yet open. What a series of adventures are in store as they live with him & his wife on their 350 acres. There are engaging descriptions of the wolves' individual personalities & how they interact with people, pets & other creatures on the property, as well as descriptions of life in the far north, including making maple sugar. Here's a memorable exerpt:
"Observing them, I realized that they looked out of place in the house. It was as though a piece of the wilderness itself had suddenly and magically appeared in one corner of our kitchen, each wolf seeming to be surrounded by an aura of primordial force so compelling that it gave off sensual vibrations. They were utterly alive, two organisms tuned to fine pitch, strong, lithe, and absolutely formidable."

This book is one of the best I've read in a while. The author describes the lives of two young wolves through human eyes in a way that is uncomparable. I would really reccommend this one!

I loved this book the second I picked it up. The author, RD Lawrence, can get his point through very well. The book goes into detail about the lives of wolves, and through a year and change in their life. It's wonderful reading at any time, especially if you enjoy wolves, RD Lawrence, or both.

Perfect book for quickly checking on new flowers.......2005-12-18

I love this book. I keep it in the door pocket in my car so I can return from a hike or outing and check it anytime. I really appreciate the way the flowers are organized in the book to easily find the one I need, and the descriptive info is always interesting. It's made me much more aware of the native vs. imported wildflowers, with many surprises there. A terrific book for the interested outdoors person. Just wish I could find a similar book for nearby states and for wildlife, trees, birds, etc.

My primary reference for area wildflowers.......2003-01-08

This is the first book I pick up when identifying wildflowers of Ohio. The information is complete and entertaining, as well, with interesting notations regarding the history of many of the plants. The beautiful photos make it easy to recognize most of the flowers in the field immediately. I recommend this book as a useful and enjoyable way to learn about regional wildflowers.

This book is by no means a comprehensive listing of all wildflowers and shrubs in Ohio, but it is a great resource for anyone who is just getting acquainted with plant identification. Using this guide, you should be able to identify most plants that are in flower to species and identify the rest to family or genus. The color pictures are clear and the format is easy to use. I would recommend this book to hikers, butterfly enthusiasts, and anyone else who appreciates wildflowers and wants to be able to identify more of them.

Great Book.......2001-04-17

This book is just fine! I totally disagree with the 1st reviewer. I have other books that are also helpful and need to use them all for reference. The photos are helpful and the information is totally accurate & I consider my self an expert in this area. I don't know what the 1st reviewer is talking about??? I prefer this to Perterson's Guides. I use Audobon's as my 1st choice and use this as a good everyday back up.

While those wildflowers that are listed in this book are well photographed and described, about two thirds of those I've looked up have not been included. I'm pretty sure that what's growing on my land is fairly typical Ohio flora, so I'm a bit disappointed.

Terrific, very kid-friendly!.......2003-05-07

I bought this and the Henn "Wildflowers of Ohio" for my little girl, now 4. She enjoys them both, but I think the format of this book is more user-friend for a small child as there is only one flower on each page and the picture is large. I have found one flower so far that was not in Tekiela's book but was in Henn's, so you might want to get both. Henn's book does not stay open as easily, so Tekiela's book is easier to use when you're squated looking at something. Tekiela's has little boxes next to the names in the index so you can check off the ones you find, so that is nice. In the Henn book, the font is smaller and the layout shows 3 flowers printed sideways, so you have to turn the book to read it. The font in the Tekiela book is larger and a normal, vertical layout. This might be important with kids or anyone who benefits from larger fonts. Both guides are very good though, so I'd be hard-pressed to chose between them. Probably you'll have to do like me and just buy both! LOL.
