Excellent!.......2001-07-03
This book is an excellent piece of herpetological literature, and a must for any serious herpetological enthusiast or anyone with an interest in snakes. It offers somewhat detailed species description on African taxa, and is a valuable source of information about the continent's venomous species. The descriptions are divided into sections for each species, including identification, distinguishing characteristics, races (subspecies), similar species, behavior, distribution, habitat, natural history, venom, snakebite, case histories and treatment. Herpetologists, serious naturalists and herpetoculturists will especially appreciate the detailed information provided on behavior, venom and case histories, while casually interested readers will enjoy the sections on distinguishing characteristics and natural history. This book should be a part of every herp library! It is also pretty hard to find, so if you see it, grab it!
A very informative accont by a renowned hepetologist.......1998-09-07
This is a very interesting and informative book. Rich in information aswell as magnificent photographs adding to the overall class of the book. A definte MUST for anyone seriously interested in snakes, especially african species.
An excellent overview of dangerous african snakes.......1997-03-26
The book is well written and very informative. The information regarding snakebites and how to address them is very good. It is a good field guide but the photographs are really too small. Also may times the photos show the head of the snake and not the whole animal. The information is top notch and it really shows the lack of documented information on african snakes. I would highly recommend it to anybody with an interest snakes

Book Description
Clashes of Wills is a collection of essays that explore the great confrontations of the United States since 1877, looking at eleven areas of controversy that are part of today's news, but whose sources lie in the past. By focusing on well-known people who represent these issues, the book creates stories that are selective, focused, and coherent, to paint a portrait of the United States in the past century and a half.

Public Policy brought to life.......2005-12-28
Broesamle & Arthur's Clashes of Will is an exceptionally fine book. It embeds some of our most complex current policy issues in both historical context and in the life experience of some of our nation's most famous figures. This little volume addresses foreign policy concerns about promoting democracy abroad and controlling nuclear weapons, domestic policy debate about the proper role of government in protecting the environment and providing adequate welfare and the limits of presidential authority, and in domestic social policy matters including racism, equality of opportunity, worker rights and women's rights. It does so with remarkable evenhandedness, suggesting the strengths of both sides of some of these on-going controversies while encouraging the reader to do some hard thinking about just what is correct and what is weak about each argument. I especially admire the way the chapters explain how the personal circumstances of some of the principals influenced and guided their principles and their actions. The book shows that ideas matter, that conviction and effort have big payoff. This book offers needed historical background, sound balance, and a little optimism about policy debates. What a wonderful primer for any student of public policy studies!
History as Drama.......2005-12-08
John Broesamle and Anthony Arthur explode the myth that history is boring. Clashes of Will explores and exposes the dramatic conflicts that have shaped American history. Unlike so many politically imbalanced books, this volume goes to great pains to present both sides of a confrontation. The book challenges those on the left and right to reconsider their beliefs and conclusions. In chapter after chapter, idealists confront realists-ideas bang into ideas with breakneck speed and lasting consequences. While both serious and casual students of history will enjoy this book, AMERICANS will benefit from a read through these beautifully written pages. Clashes of Will is history come to life-with vibrancy and passion.
A Fascinating Dynamic.......2005-11-17
Broesamle and Arthur's precise attention to detail allows us to regard anew contentious periods in American history. Marvelous prose and even some sly humor make this book a pleasure to read.
An idea that works.......2005-11-10
During several car trips, my husband and I read aloud Broesamle and Arthur's Clashes of Will and found ourselves eager to begin "just one more chapter," hoping not to reach our destination before we finished it. In each chapter, the authors posited two personalities and the conflicts that providence placed before them. For me the personality and historical development of those individuals transformed them from names in a book to people with logical rationale and reasonable urgings to confront issues as they did. The authors' scholarship and insights have produced an interesting and captivating read.
An important book.......2005-10-30
Broesamle and Arthur chisel into the reader's mind images of some of the most important and eccentric figures in U. S. political history and place them in the context of the confrontations that made them famous. This book is equally valuable for the general reader and the specialist. In addition, it's a darn good read.

During the 1980s, Swedish-born Billy Klüver became a sort of amateur archivist, collecting early-20th-century photographs of the bohemian district of Paris known as Montparnasse. One day he stumbled upon a group of astonishing photographs depicting such seminal modernist figures as Modigliani; Picasso; his friend, the poet Max Jacob; and the poet and critic André Salmon as well as Picasso's mistress, P`querette. Like an archaeologist reconstructing an artifact, Klüver set about trying to determine how, where, and why the pictures were taken. The result of his efforts is the whimsical and engaging A Day with Picasso, centering around 24 pictures taken on the afternoon of August 12, 1916, over the course of four hours. The photographer? None other than Jean Cocteau, in an early experiment that perhaps prefigured his later films. Brought together by an exhibit at the Salon d'Antin, the famous subjects are shown laughing and clowning their way through a café lunch and later adjourning to a nearby restaurant.
A Day with Picasso also contains a detailed précis of Cocteau's work, some contextual background about the subjects and their relationships to one another, and some sample drawings from the artists whose relaxed camaraderie is so vividly captured in these intriguing photographs.
Book Description
In 1978, while collecting documentary photographs of the artists' community in Montparnasse from the first decades of the century, Billy Klüver discovered that some previously unassociated photographs fell into significant groupings. One group in particular, showing Picasso, Max Jacob, Moïse Kisling, Modigliani, and others at the Café de la Rotonde and on Boulevard du Montparnasse, all seemed to have been taken on the same day. The people were wearing the same clothes in each shot and had the same accessories. Their ties were knotted the same way and their collars had the same wrinkles. A total of twenty-four photographs--four rolls of film with six photographs each--were eventually found. With the challenge of identifying the date, photographer, and circumstances, Klüver embarked on an inquiry that would illuminate the minute texture of that time and place.
Biographical research into the subjects' lives led Klüver to focus on the summer of 1916 as the likely time the photos were taken. He then measured buildings and plotted angles and lengths of shadows in the photographs to narrow the time frame to a spread of three weeks. Further investigation eventually allowed Klüver to identify the photographer as Jean Cocteau and to determine the day that Cocteau had taken the photographs: August 12, 1916. A computer printout of the sun's positions on that date, obtained from the Bureau des Longitudes, together with the length of the shadows, enabled Klver to calculate the time of day of each photograph, and thus to put them in proper sequence.
In a tour de force of art historical research, Klüver then reconstructed a scenario of the events of the four hours depicted in the photographs. With evocative attention to detail--noting when Picasso is no longer carrying an envelope or Max Jacob has acquired a decoration in his lapel--Klüver recreates a single afternoon in the lives of Picasso and friends, a group of remarkable people in early twentieth-century Paris.
Besides the central "portfolio" of photographs by Cocteau, the book contains additional photographs and drawings, short biographies of all the subjects, and a historical section on the events and activities in the Paris art world at the time.

Sunny Paris Afternoon with Picasso, Cocteau & Friends.......2006-02-19
If you ever wanted to travel back in time and grab a bite and spend the day with Picasso, Cocteau, Modigliani et al., then this is probably the closest you'll ever get. Kluver's book is kind of a miracle, little gem, really. Who would have thought that one day in the life of a group of friends could be so interesting (albeit a very important group of friends). Perhaps they never thought about that day, or those photographs again. The book not only successfully outlines the day itself, but the whole context for the day. What was going on with whom, how so and so knew the other, what important gallery shows were coming at the time, etc.
The story also illustrates the marriage of Cocteau's bourgeous/fashion/aristocratic circles with the Montparnasse/Left bank artists...Picasso and Cocteau remained lifelong (though sometimes strained) friends, and this was during the early years of that relationship. The context of the story also brings in couturier of the day Paul Poiret (his home(!!) and adjacent gallery), and patroness Misia Sert, both of whom I loved learning more about after reading this book (Arthur Gold's Misia Sert is a GREAT read). Be sure to read the Notes when you read this book, they hold lots of great little nuggets of information, testament to Kluvers copious and detailed research.
Snapshot of the artist as a boulevardier.......2000-12-17
Long ago, in a city far, far away, Pablo Picasso and some Montparnasse artist colony friends went cafe-hopping. The future film director Jean Cocteau, on leave from the Western Front, snapped pictures of the group indoors and out. Time passed, the friends went their separate ways, and the pictures were dispersed into different hands. Three-quarters of a century later, a Swiss electrical engineer collecting photos of the Montparnasse scene discovered that several of the photos seemed to have been taken at the same time. This book is the story of how he discovered other photos in the series in different collections around the world, how he discovered the identity of the photographer, and how he pinpointed the day and time the pictures were taken.
This is an amazing book, as much for the ten-plus years it took to sleuth this story out as for the fact that anyone did it at all. The author, once he went to extraordinary lengths to collect these photos, even consulted the French Bureau of Longitudes to analyze the shadows in the pictures, in order to fix the time of day.
So, what do we have? Pictures of Picasso as a man in his mid-thirties (with a full head of hair!), in cafes and on the street with other artists, notably Modigliani and Kisling, and his then current amour, and other acquaintances. They cheerfully pose and mug for their friend Cocteau. And that's it, really. The text relates the story of how these photos were taken, and how the author discovered when, where, and by whom they were taken.
As if that wasn't impressive enough, he then adds chapters which deduce what kind of camera Cocteau used, maps of the area with the camera angles plotted, and selections of drawings, diaries, and correspondence that illustrate one detail or other of the pictures. It's all very interesting, in a headache-inducing way--rather like contemplating a picture painted on a grain of rice. And all this for the sake of recovering a long-ago afternoon of bar-hopping! _Le recouvrement du temp perdu_, indeed.
A excellent book on the artists early life ........1998-11-01
I havent ever seen a book like this before. Reading this book and following the complete pictures is the next best thing to having a time machine. This book answers those questions that we never had answered like how was he with his friends? etc. You will enjoy it.

Better title would be: English Setters and Some Other Dogs.......2005-01-26
Now I understand why the author put so much information and pictures of English Setters; he owns some. The author's love for English Setters is evident page after page after page, even in the sections 'dedicated' to Gordon Setters and Irish Setters. I cannot understand why the author would bother writing a book that included the Irish and Gordon if he seemed to have trouble fiinding good things to write about them. I was shocked to read his harsh and sometimes cruel opinion on the lovely Irish Setter.
All of the pictures are of the highest quality and are, of course, adorable. However even in the pictures, the author's love of English Setters comes through again, with almost double the amount of pictures there are of the Irish Setter.
Would I recommend this book? To an English Setter fancier - yes. To a Gordon Setter fancier - sure, if you have some extra money to toss around. To a Irish Setter fancier - Look at the pretty pictures while you browse through a bookstore then immediately put it back in the shelf.
Excellent stories, photo's and a true reflection of our dogs.......1999-10-04
When I received my copy of this book, I was more than pleasantly surprised by the coverage and photo's! I was elated! It's an absolutely beautiful pictoral and the author truly captured the soul of the Setters! The history and antics of our dogs presented were excellent! Kudo's to the author!
Cute puppy pictures - how could you go wrong?.......1999-09-23
O.K. its a dog book. But for all those folks who share their life with a setter this publication will give you an hour or two of smiles - more if you keep it on your coffee table. I have enjoyed my copy and feel the writing caputures both the regal hunting dogs and the personality of those who love them.

Ready to turn your herb-gardening hobby into a business? Sandie Shores details the fundamentals of commercial herb growing in a thorough, well-organized reference. Written from the vantage of the author's 14 years of experience in the business, the information is practical and practicable. Profiles and anecdotes from other growers around the country are interspersed throughout the book.
The section on business basics starts with a thoughtful discourse on personal objectives and market research and continues with site selection and a thorough list of potential customers, from restaurants to distributors. The section on greenhouses for year-round growing includes practical discussion on materials and construction, interior layout, and systems design, so there's no need to purchase a separate greenhouse reference. Further discussion of growing methods focuses on sustainability, and pest-management suggestions include preventative awareness of life cycle and preferred environments. Handling and harvesting tips, uses, and specialized packaging advice are provided for 14 different herbs, inclusive of the wide selection found in the majority of markets today. Lesser-known herbs are touched on, as are edible flowers. A list of resources and support publications concludes the book.
The author takes the mystery out of this business, filling a near vacuum with this reference, but at the same time presents the potential hazards and attention required. One caveat: the black-and-white photos and sketches are generally useful, but one wishes for color pictures of the herbs themselves, given that part of the appeal of fresh herbs is the vibrant color and texture that promise romance to the nose and taste buds. --Molly McElroy
Book Description
This definitive guide for those looking to start or expand their own herb business focuses entirely on fresh-cut herbs for the grower who supplies restaurants or supermarkets, vends at farmers markets, or sells from her own retail space. Discussed are the value of a business plan and how to find the right niche for the business. Whether selling to supermarkets, wholesalers, brokers, or caterers, growers will benefit from these business tips. Valuable advice is provided on financing; honoring local zoning laws; creating invoices and packing slips; managing employees; pricing and marketing; maintaining accounts; and increasing business. All aspects of building a greenhouse are addressed, from selecting a prime location and building a structure to the equipment needed to grow, including lights, thermostats, benches, and irrigation systems. Other topics include growing and nurturing plants from germination through harvest; assessing the needs of different herb crops and edible flowers; and harvesting and packaging the finished product.
Customer Reviews:
A good start.......2004-09-06
It's obvious Sandie Shores put a lot of effort, time and heartfelt advice into this reference book, and it contains a lot of useful advice for the beginning grower.
I've been referring to this book for several years now; I have grown herbs for many years and built a greenhouse business around it. I would like to comment on a few shortcomings of this book, in hopes that those individuals choosing to go into the culinary herb growing field will refer to additional sources of information, rather than relying strictly on this one source.
One major problem is Ms. Shores' lack of emphasis toward maintaining *healthy* plants and how this effectively prevents disease and pests to begin with. She instead talks about how to deal with pests and diseases. The more I study disease and pest control, the more I find increased emphasis on maintaining healthy plants as the best defense. Growers are now becoming aware of techniques that increase brix in plants which is a natural pest fighter, and improving and restoring healthy soil conditions through organic practices and remineralization, or even adopting simplified and effective hydroponic techniques (e.g., VertiGro). Some of these effects can be sought through the use of Sonic Bloom, mineral dust, OceanGrown, composting, and using a TDS meter to measure solids in your water supply. I have found that by greatly increasing the plant's health I have been able to effectively fight disease and pests rather than resort to time-consuming and redundant spraying which only makes me feel like I'm sometimes fighting a losing battle.
I have found contradictory or missing information compared to other resources. I had to discover through another reference that I was overwatering my bay laurel trees; there is no mention in her book that they require less water than other plants. In fact, there is no mention on how much water to give bay laurel at all.
She says mint doesn't do well in containers--I have personally found that is the only way to grow them (otherwise they are too much work) and they do very well. Refer to "Bountiful Container" by McGee and Stuckey on how to successfully grow mint in containers.
There is no mention of White Dalmatian Sage, the best sage for culinary use.
Ms. Shores claims that French Tarragon must be allowed to go dormant in the winter. However, "Bountiful Container" describes a method where you can continue to grow it through the winter.
Ms. Shores says oregano is a slow grower; McGee and Stuckey say it's a rapid grower. I think it depends on the growing environment, but it can be a rapid grower given the proper conditions.
There is no mention of fusarium oxysporum under the basil section; I had to find a short description of it under the soil-borne diseases section. Shane Smith's book, Greenhouse Gardeners Companion, says it's believed that fusarium oxysporum now infects most of the world's supply of basil seeds. He recommended buying fusarium-resistant seeds and named the sources where you can buy them.
There also lacks a simplified reference to identifying plant problems. I tried looking up black spots on the basil leaves in this book but could not find any advice. Greenhouse Gardener's Companion has an excellent reference chart for looking up this kind of information.
Her sources for packaging supplies do not have what she lists in her appendix and her website. I've found other very useful vendors on the web that provide the same supplies.
Sometimes there was confusion whether she was talking about growing in the greenhouse versus field growing, or container growing versus bed growing.
If you're just starting out and will seek outside funding for your new herb business, the most important step is creating a detailed business plan. Even though there is a chapter devoted to business planning, there's no specific guidance on how to develop one. And here's some practical advice I've discovered on my own that you also won't find in this book: if you don't have experience as a grower professionally for many years, you won't even be considered for a bank or SBA loan. Smart Money magazine confirmed this with an article of theirs--banks will fund only 2% of new businesses, SBA only 6%, while 50% of new businesses will buy capital expenditures through the use of personal credit cards.
I've stopped producing plants for cutting and instead grow herb plants and container gardens (as well as others) to sell directly to the consumer. There is more satisfaction (and more money) in this, and when I discovered that wholesale distributors were selling basil in the middle of summertime for $5.50/lb, I knew I couldn't compete with those prices and pay myself a wage. Ms. Shores' book correctly states you will not get rich selling fresh cut herbs.
Ms. Shores does give excellent advice on building and maintaining a greenhouse, and how to efficiently harvest herbs for packaging and selling.
Great growing references: "Bountiful Container," "The Green Thumb Garden Handbook," "Secrets to a Successful Greenhouse and Business," "Herbs in Pots," "Fresh Culinary Herb Production," "Basil: An Herb Lover's Guide," and ATTRA on the web.
Excellent Manual.......2004-07-03
I gained a lot of insight from this book and have been marking pages and referring to it constantly. I even followed the pattern mentioned for building raised beds and it is working out great. I would have liked to see more about growing organically.
It is definitely a great source for growing your own herbs. Highly recommended.
