Per Frommer's usual convenient design, the inside flap of the front cover displays a color map of New England--so you can see the whole region at a glance--and the rest of the guidebook continues the pattern of thoughtful, practical, helpful travel information in a portable, accessible format. Chapter 1 summarizes the best of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine: the best small towns, best country inns, best restaurants, best shopping, best family destinations, and best places to see the fall foliage. Wayne Curtis then introduces the various regions, their history and geography, literary legacy, and contemporary style. Curtis provides trip-planning details, such as climate information, a calendar of events, how best to get there and get around, and where to check on the Web for New England sites. Then come the comprehensive state sections, each with recommended places to stay and eat, a discussion of outdoor activities, and interesting snippets on the Ben & Jerry story, the history of maple syrup, ferries to Nova Scotia, and the debate over Maine's North Woods. Excellent maps accompany each section, as do lists of useful phone numbers, tourist information offices, and suggestions of what there may be to do at night, resulting in a smartly compiled guidebook with lots of useful information and no excess fluff. --Stephanie Gold

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate, obnoxious, deceptive.......2005-03-28

What's worse than a guide that doesn't know his way? A guide that leads you far up the wrong path. Imagine buying a map where the streets and roads led you into all the wrong places.

According to the ad copy: "...avoid tourist traps. Frommer's Portable Guides help you make the right travel choices...Outspoken opinions on top attractions - what's worth your time and what's not...The best hotels and restaurants in every price range, with candid reviews...The expert guidance you need to take charge and travel with confidence."

The haughty tone of this particular edition would make you think the author(s) were steeped in expert knowledge about the history and traditions of the long-standing established hotels and attractions in the region. And this illusion is effective until you arrive at more than one location expecting to find a rural paradise only to discover that it has become a gated community/housing development. So what do the authors actually know other than what they seem to have compiled from the hotel brochure you find at McDonald's? Not a whole heck of a lot.

For several of the hotels reviewed in this "guide", the reviews were obviously at least two years out of date and completely unrepresentative, to the extent that there was an impression that the guide was protecting the interests of the establishment being described, or should I say, advertised. So, am I actually paying for a compendium of advertising?

Any guide can draw a fine line between objective "candid review", favoritism and deceptive promotion. Many aspects of this guide fall into the last category. Someone's not doing their research, which is why a reader may actually pay for a book, or perhaps, someone is getting some money under the table. This guide is inaccurate and deceptive. Check their reviews at their Frommer's site on the Internet. Then check what's actually going on at sites like Tripadvisor or other travel forums. In this aspect, print is dead.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely Northern New England.......2001-08-14

Frommer's guidebook provides an excellent overview of the sights to see, things to do, and places to stay in the three Northern New England states of New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. The overviews are very accurate and provide a good description of the places, making the book an excellent way to decide where to go in the areas, and a good guidebook once you arrive.

The biggest problem with the book is that there is not enough individual descriptions of each area. Chances are most tourists are not visiting several regions in all three states, but are choosing one or two to explore in-depth. For example, I went to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park in Maine, an area that was given around 20 pages of coverage. Therefore, more research on the specific areas you plan to visit will probably be necessary to help you get the absolute most out of your trip!

            3 out of 5 stars Hello Robert E. Lee.......2006-06-06

Robert E. Lee was a very hansom man, and he was in the civil war. Robert got married to Mary Custis in 1831,and she died in 1846. Robert E. Lee went to West Point Military School. He never got in got in trouble and he was the best in his class. The most remarkable thing I can remember is he was a genius at war. This subject is Important because he was a southern hero without him their would still be slaves and no freedom. Anybody who wants to know about the civil war should read this book.
This book was very well organized, I like how it went from old to child to adolescent to adult. The book's organized to help the reader to understand what happened in Roberts life. The best part was when he went to camp at West Point Military School that was awesome.

            Book Description

This book follows up to the success of dgv's bestseller Lingua Grafica, which has established itself as a leading tool for guiding international designers in their everyday work. The expectations of fans of its predecessor will not be disappointed - Lingua Universalis also features a structured portfolio of the latest logos and icons done by the Mutabor design studio.

Lingua Universalis explains the process behind logo creation from the perspective of the award-winning creative team. Mutabor breaks down the development of various logos into a series of steps. This visual presentation shows designers examples of how they can approach complex and abstract subjects in logo design.

With Lingua Universalis, another book has been created which will serve designers worldwide as both a source of inspiration and a practical reference work.

This book is the sequel of the world famous Lingua Grafica: nice product, big idea but like every sequel is a little interesting confronted the first book.

            5 out of 5 stars inspiring again..........2006-02-06

Lingua Universalis is the second book published by the german design firm MUTABOR, Hamburg. like their first book (Lingua Grafica) it is a collection of logos and symbols for various clients like audi or greenpeace magazine.
a huge archive of modern, but sometimes also classic logotypes, fresh and inspiring at once.

my proposal: first buy their first book and if you like it, Lingua Universalis is a must have as well!

            Book Description

This is a construction manual intended for both budding novices and experienced bird breeders alike. Comprehensively written and professionally illustrated, the book is loaded with construction details, diagrams and pictures, material lists, insulating and finishing techniques and tips, environmental concerns, simple step by step instructions and, essentially, everything you need to know about building everything you need for your birds.

Every plan and construction detail is compiled from years of hands on experience by the author in the raising and breeding of birds ranging from finches, canaries and larger softbills to most of the hardbills including (but not limited to) parakeets, budgies, and cockatiels, on up to amazons, cockatoos, macaws, and so on. There are projects ranging from simple houses, cages, breeding and nesting quarters to small, medium, large and grand scale aviaries, all designed and detailed with both the beginning hobbyist and serious fancier, alike, in mind.

Because many of the aviary designs are based on modular construction, they contain the flexibility to start small and expand or start big and go even bigger. The material & costs have been considered carefully, and the information contained in the book will allow anyone to calculate exactly what is needed before starting actual construction. This makes it possible for the builder to contact material suppliers in his/her local area, obtain prices, and, if necessary, scale back the design to meet the current budget (and make plans to expand in the future). The designs require inexpensive, non-specialized, easy to obtain materials assembled in a straight-forward manner with the minimum tools, and give you strong, durable housing that you can be tailor-made for a specific breed of bird or modified as needed. Included also are construction plans for feeders, waterers, nesting humidifiers, hospital quarters, shipping and carrying cages, electrical wiring, plumbing and ventilation plans for the aviary, plus a host of other ideas, construction tips and general information seldom found in other bird publications.

Copyrighted and published by the author in 1973, the book has sold over 20,000 copies worldwide through the years. Although the materials were reviewed and updated in 1996 to ensure up-to-date information, the content has remained the same. While the book was written for aviculturists, permission was granted in 1990 to an instructor at University of California Berkeley to use excerpts from the book in a class on general construction.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Practical, easy and brilliant!.......2005-06-28

I waited a long time to get this book and it was worth every moment. The designs are well thought out and easy for even the mechanically challenged to understand. The author has devised an aviary/cage system that can be increased or decreased at will, by adding or subtracting carefully yet simply designed panels. Each panel fulfills a particular function of the whole to form the basic unit and you can add unlimited units to form your ideal facility. This information is timeless and I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Good plans for modular building.......2005-02-01

This book lays out a good set of plans for starting small and working your way up to as large a breeding operation as you like. I am adept at building small animal pens, and I've been doing so for several decades, on a hobby basis. I was still impressed with the simple brilliance of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the average suburban hobbyist.......2003-08-07

Potential purchasers of this booklet should be aware that the author is very serious about his birds. What he considers a "quite small" aviary, "for the aviculturist who has only restricted land area for his hobby", measures 11 by 16 feet. A "fairly large" one is 38 by 24 feet, complete with concrete foundation, plumbing, heating, electric lights, and 12 foot ceilings.
If, like me, you are looking for ideas for a small backyard aviary for a few canaries, you should look elsewhere. This publication contains plans for only 6 aviaries. Four are far too large for the average suburban lot, unless you are willing to knock down your house first, and the other two are so rudimentary that plans are hardly necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional plans, better than what I expected........2003-02-22

I needed a means by which to build aviaries for my birds. I have built one out of the book, and it is great. I'm most impressed with the bird "hospital" cage.. It works exactly as described. My first impression when I received the book was not that great. The drawings were clear, directions clear, but I guess on some level I expected something more than what looked like a college study packet from Kinko's. The designs in this book and the subsequent modifications I've made to them to fit my needs have been outstanding. One needs only a modicum of building expertise, a knucklehead can put the designes together. Highly recommended... again, this is coming from someone who has actually built items off the plans in the book. It's not a glitzy book, but doggon functional.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Basics or Simplicity Plus for the birds........2002-11-15

Considering the first printing was in 1973, revised in 1996, and its now 2002, this book still holds firm for the basic needs of birds. From the housing needs to the transportation needs. It is as complete as a book can be without being overwhelming for the beginner hobbyist. One aviary near me was built from this book. It covers all the birds needs from spring to winter. Its well constructed and easy access to clean. The other needs of the birds are also covered so you get the complete program in one book. Size and style changes for different birds is covered.
After reading the editorial reviews, the author was based in N America and the metric system was not used much in the 1970's, so I appreciate the simple measurement charts and layouts for building what is needed. I have one book to keep, one to share, and one to mark my progress in. Thank you Don LaRosa for such a great job of writing a Simplicity Plus Book !!

Gardening on a small scale is a necessity for most people, simply because they do not have room to be more expansive. The Encyclopedia of the Small Garden presents the reader with a wealth of practical information as well as a host of great ideas on how to make the most of limited space available. There are sections on "vertical gardening", how to create and maintain small ponds and water features, growing flowers and fruit on a balcony or patio, and so much more. Broad in range, this book will help you create an herb garden, choose the best vegetables, and plant beautiful containers. In short it is the ideal single-volume source of help and inspiration for anyone blessed with a small garden. Illustrated in color throughout, this book features over 1000 instructional and step-by-step photographs to show you how to achieve the best results, while over 500 photos of plants and effects provide a touch of inspiration.

                      Book Description

Combining unique travel choices, outdoor adventures, and little-known locales into guides where vacations meet adventures, each title in the Hidden series offers readers the comfort of detailed maps, internet information for each listing, suggested itineraries, and walking and driving tours. A resident of Santa Fe for over twenty years, travel writer Richard Harris has come to know New Mexico's attractions well. A strong believer in eco-tourism, Harris guides travelers to the natural and cultural attractions that have made New Mexico world-renowned, while helping readers understand how to both enjoy and preserve them. Complete details on campgrounds, hiking trails, biking paths, ski resorts, and whitewater runs are included. Hidden New Mexico offers reviews of locally run hotels and recommendations of over sixty restaurants serving Mexican, new Mexican, and Nouveau Southwestern cuisine, as well as information on cooking classes where visitors can learn to make their own hot and spicy favorites. With eight pages of full-color maps, this is the perfect insider's guide for visitors from near or far.

2 out of 5 stars Frommers Took the Best Ideas.......2005-06-08

This is probably a good book, but if you buy the Frommers Guide to Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque you get the same "hidden" details and more accurate reviews. Brought this book on my vacation and maybe got two bits of interesting info from it once after I got there.

5 out of 5 stars A great travel book on New Mexico.......2001-03-20

We live in New Mexico, and every holiday or free weekend we use this guide to lead us to new exciting and beautiful places. This book is the perfect travel companion for anyone interested in smaller, off the beaten path places. This book led us to discover Las Vegas, NM, a (yet) not so touristy place unlike Taos or Sante Fe. Thanks to this guide, we enjoyed the free road side Hot Springs located in a pristine alpine valley, and delicious restaurants that put the more known places to shame. It has small eateries and interesting museums, parks like the little known Three Rivers Petroglyph National Monument with thousands of drawings, on the way from Socorro to Alamogordo. Yet again, this is a place not mentioned in other tourist maps or books. I would recommend for anyone really interested in traveling through New Mexico to also have DeLorme Topographic Map of New Mexico with them for references and the smaller roads. The general RandMcNally or AAA maps just don't cut it. Those topo maps are only about 16 dollars and will work great with the Hidden New Mexico book or any travelguide. Check out Chaco Canyon National Monument as well, and stay in El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, you will not believe your eyes! That was also a tip from the Hidden New Mexico book. Enjoy the most beautiful state in the nation (I am biased, I know)!

                      1 out of 5 stars Doesn't shed much light.......1999-12-23

This book gives virtually no driving directions or driving times - an email query to the publisher was not acknowledged. It claims that the only way to fly in is to Albuquerque - in fact, United flies to Santa Fe, as I discovered while boarding my plane to Albuquerque - giving me an extra hour's drive coming and going. The maps are inadequate at best - few of the attractions/lodgings mentioned are shown. Hotel listings are incomplete, and biased toward the high end. Admission fees to attractions - often as high as $10/person - are not given. Many sights are mentioned (Anasazi cliff dwellings, Mesa Verde) without a description, but are not in the index. No chart of annual temperatures was given - that I could see - I found out the hard way that it gets very, very cold in the winter. In short, using this book to plan and travel was an extremely frustrating experience.

                            Product Description

Kacie Dugan was forced to grow up at a very early age. She was the older of two girls, children of alcoholic parents, young observers of regular Saturday night brawls. She assumed an adult role as peacemaker, protector, and problem-solver before she was eight years old. But this background serves her well decades later when as office manager for Custom Benefit Plans, a third party administrator for health insurance claims, she realizes she is dealing with more than just greed in the HMO industry. People were dying as Freedom HMO delayed approval of urgently needed health care treatment. Her boss, Caine Daniels, had entered into a joint venture agreement with Freedom, and what she discovers about their unwritten policies and procedures is abhorrent. She wastes no time pointing out the unethical if not illegal policies; she is met with brick walls and ugly words. But she knows how to overcome fear, and she knows how to dig for the truth; threats of violence are nothing new to her. When Caine receives a blackmail demand for $150,000, along with an embarrassing Polaroid taken during a drunken college frat party, Kacie offers to help. But finding the perpetrator is made more difficult by Caine's history. He has managed to make many enemies during his climb to financial success: his marketing manager, Ned Ash, resents his success and his belittling treatment; the local hospital administrator, Evan Sheridan, accused him of his own type of blackmail for using the hospital's offer to purchase Custom Benefit Plans in order to negotiate a sweeter deal with Freedom; and of course there are always the competitors, some victims of Caine's ruthlessness, others simply looking for a bigger piece of the pie. Ash and Sheridan join forces and approach Freedom with a sweet deal of their own. Ash wants exclusive marketing rights to Freedom's insurance plans; Sheridan wants an exclusive contract to provide hospital and physician services to Freedom's clients. Freedom sees a chance to downsize by closing Custom's claims office and moving administration to one of the other shops; shareholders just love downsizing. And they see a chance to gain greater control over Caine Daniels. His ability to generate business and revenues is remarkable. He runs with the big guys with the big bucks who make the decisions about where to go for insurance coverage for their employees. As a Freedom executive, he would have to modify his "shoot from the hip" style that irked both the bean counters and the shareholders. That would make him even more valuable to Freedom's plans to become the nation's largest HMO. But Caine finds evidence that Kacie is the blackmailer. He accuses her, then fires her and threatens to prosecute. The patient/victims of Freedom's policies of delay of medical treatment and claims payments are left with no one to fight for their rights and their lives. But Kacie devises a plan, and with the help of two insiders, women supervisors, she gets her job back. Not only that, but the circumstances make it possible for them, along with two other supervisors, to demand and get ten percent ownership of Custom Benefit Plans--ten percent EACH. Caine's plan to sell out to Freedom and become their Western Regional CEO are thwarted when Kacie discovers Freedom's plan to close the office and move all claims administration to Chicago. The women agree to vote against the sale, and with their combined fifty percent ownership, the deal is blocked. Suddenly all eyes are on the women and all anger is directed at them. The anger quickly becomes focused on Kacie Dugan, the "ringleader" of the employee revolution standing in the way of huge financial and power rewards for the dealmakers. It's clear to all concerned; Kacie Dugan has to be removed.

5 out of 5 stars Nice guidebook to the northern Sangre de Cristo range.......2006-07-27

This is one of the nicest of the NMBM's "Scenic Trips to the Geologic Past" series. This 1991 edition is a major revision of the earlier "Scenic Trips to the Geologic Past #2" guidebook (which was just a short pamphlet, and is long out-of-print). The present guidebook is a substantial short book (137 pp.), and is much improved from the old pamphlet. It now includes both the "Enchanted Circle" drive and another loop drive to the mountain villages south of Taos. Many neat historical photos have been added, as has a nice section of color photographs. There's a short historical sketch of Taos, and quite a bit of general natural history in addition to the geology. This is the book you want for geological tourism around Taos.

Unfortunately, it's now out of print, and expensive used. You may want to check it out from your public library. Memo to NMBM: get this book back in print!

                                    Happy reading--

Unlike so many biographies of dance maestros, Merce Cunningham: Fifty Years offers no litany of substance or psychological abuse. The volume, assembled by the archivist of Merce Cunningham's world-renowned U.S. company, records and analyzes Cunningham's work process and documents the provenance of his modern dance classics. Heavily spiced with biographical detail, Merce Cunningham packages the choreographer's life story in a lovely design that respects his whole body and conveys a rare sense of movement in its mass of still photos.

                                      Book Description

Merce Cunningham celebrates the career of one of the most important artists of the twentieth century, from his first innovative and explosive solo dances to the present. This unique book incorporates images of performances by many world-renowned photographers, including Imogen Cunningham, Barbara Morgan, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Hujar, and Arnold Eagle.

Rapper, activist, and hip-hop rebel, Sister Souljah possesses the most passionate and articulate voice to emerge from the projects. Now she uses that voice to deliver what is at once a fiercely candid autobiography and a survival manual for any African American woman determined to keep her heart open and her integrity intact in 1990s America.

I decided to read this book after I learned that my favorite artist and a person I look up to read it, Tupac. This book was a eye opener. I loved how she went into a lot of the issues we as black people deal with on the daily basis and she didnt sugarcoat anything. She was so raw with everything she said and I loved it. I think every young black male and female should read this book. I agreed, disagreed, laughed, cried, and smiled while i read this book it got so many emotions out of me and a book has never done that before. I definitely recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Such is life.......2006-04-25

After reading "No Disrespect", I have learned that the behavior of a race is greatly influenced by the surroundings and the brainwashing of other cultures. Although many people will not admit to being prejudiced, the evidence is apparent. I myself feel that African Americans need to learn about our beginnings just like the teachers in the schools want us to learn about the beginnings of this country. February should not be the only month for Black History. We are black everyday we are on this earth. Sista Souljah kept it real in her book. "Black Problems" are real and will always exist. This is a book I recommend for teenagers to read to get a jump on life and the experiences they will face. I have much love for my people, and want us to again unify and take care of business; raising strong black children.
