Visitors Only.......2007-10-05
After reading all of the praise this book heaps on the Japan Rail Pass, I was very excited about purchasing one and doing some sightseeing before I begin my teaching job in Japan... Until I got to page 12 and read, "This pass cannot be used by anybody arriving in Japan for employment". The cost of rail travel without it is much too expensive. I'll probably leave this book at home.

Great resource.......2006-08-13
I just came back from a very nice trip to Japan, and having this book was really helpful. There is a lot of very helpful, accurate, and detailed information. I covered 4 cities, and rode every form of rail transportation. This book helped me with diverse tasks from how to choose which sites to see to how to navigate through the airports and train stations.
Get a JR pass and this book and you can cover Japan!
Not useful at all!.......2006-02-09
This book is terrible. I lived in Japan for more than a decade and I was planning a short excursion so I bought this book. It was not helpful at all. It covers the greatest hits of Japan but has very little detail about most places. It seems to assume that you'd want to just ride the train all the time without ever getting off. Most of the suggested trips are incredibly unrealistic about the amount of time it would take to visit the listed places, almost to the point of ridiculousness. I do not recommend this book at all! Any other guide book and a rail map would be much better.
If you are planning on traveling in Japan, skip "Japan by Rail" and get "Gateway to Japan" published by Kodansha. It is the best!
Japan By Rail.......2006-01-16
An excellent book to have with you whilst travelling around Japan by rail. Recommend the publication to anyone who will be travelling to Japan. Has excellent places to visit on a budget.
Bummer.......2005-08-16
This book is a total let-down.
It offers extremely limited information on all places worth seeing. The JR lines may be given but are not including the new Kyushu Shinkansen line and many new or discontinued stations.
Also, as other folks pointed out, the private railways are not mentioned. A superb trainplanner in conjunction with Rough Guide or Lonley Planet would be Jorudan. Jorudan in an online travel planner for Japanese public transport and airlines. They have an excellent guide with up to date initiary data for all your trips in Japan. If you are not a US national, you may want to avoid onley Planet aswell, as it is verry clearly aimed at and written by US nationals.
This book got me lost.......2005-08-02
I ordered this book because I was going to spend a month in Osaka, and having purchased a JR Rail pass I wanted to visit cities like Kyoto, Tokyo, and Nara. This book helped me get to Nara, which isn't on the main shinkansen line, but aside from that I didn't get much use out of it--in fact, it got me lost once.
The main drawback to this guide is that it is limited only to JR lines. In big cities like Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo, the main way to get around is not through JR, but through either bus systems (Kyoto) or smaller subway and train companies (this is especially true for Osaka). So once you get to a city through JR, the book stops being helpful. How did I get lost? In Kyoto, I followed the advice of the book to take a JR Bus to somewhere near the Golden Pavilion. The book told me to wait at JR Bus stop No. 3, but didn't give me any name or number information. I was uneasy taking the first bus that came--everything was in Japanese so I didn't know if it was the right one--but I decided to trust the guidebook and get on. I had Rough Guide to Japan with me as well, and I started following the streets we passed on its map--the bus seemed to go the right way, but suddenly all the street names lost their English subtitles, and I realized that I wasn't going to the Golden Pavilion after all. I had to stop the bus driver and fumble in bad Japanese to tell him I was on the wrong bus. After returning to Osaka, I found out that Kyoto has these new "sightseeing" city buses that would have taken me straight there, for only $2. The book goes out of its way to recommend anything JR--if only it had mentioned the more convenient city buses.
As others have mentioned, this book is helpful with planning an itinerary of cities to visit it Japan, for those with a JR Pass and limited time. This is especially true for cities that require train transfers--it'll tell you which lines you need to get to. However, any other information, including food, attractions, etc. is extremely limited. For example, in a city like Kyoto, there are a wealth of amazing temples, yet the only one the book mentions is the Golden Pavilion. You'll certainly need a 'traditional' guidebook to supplement this rail guide, to let you know what to see and do, especially in cities like Kyoto and Tokyo.
I had three guidebooks for Japan-- Rough Guide, Gateway to Japan, and this one. While Rough Guide and Gateway I used interchangeably, I hardly ever touched this rail guide.

Germany's Underground: The Anti-Nazi Resistance
ASIN: 052100358X |
Book Description
There was much popular support for Hitler's regime in Nazi Germany, and little widespread domestic opposition or resistance. However, a number of individuals amd small groups, from all sections of society, did engage in acts of public defiance or resistance against the regime. This opposition came from the Christian churches; communists, socialists and industrial workers; conservative groups; elements within the army; students and the German youth; and Jews. This book looks at the nature of this opposition and the historical debate surrounding it.

Book Description
Internal opposition to Nazism is often mythologized as heroic or dismissed as "too little, too late, and for the wrong reasons." These seminal writings trace the real and complex history of the German Resistance from the ascent of the Nazi Party to the July 1944 attempted assassination of Hitler. Informed by four decades of research and written by the premier historian of the German Resistance, this book constitutes the definitive work on those tens of thousands of Germans who fought the Third Reich from within.
Hans Mommsen considers the full spectrum of opposition, from small but still-dangerous acts of political disobedience to large-scale conspiracies to overthrow the government. Along the way he tells the incredible stories of such Germans as Count Claus von Stauffenberg, who planted a briefcase bomb during a staff meeting at Hitler's East Prussian military headquarters, and the members of the Kreisau Circle, who clandestinely met to plan for Germany's postwar future as a democratic member of an integrated Europe.
While upholding resistance to Nazism as a value beyond reproach, Mommsen considers the varied and sometimes murky motives of those who resisted--motives that ranged from principled commitment to pragmatic self-interest by former Nazi sympathizers. He examines resisters' detailed and not-always-democratic programs to rebuild a state and reeducate a Nazified society and considers their sometimes ambivalent attitudes toward the unfolding Final Solution.
Available in English for the first time in this fluid translation, this book is a signal achievement by a major scholar--and the standard work on the German Resistance available in any language.
Customer Reviews:
Read this book.......2004-08-19
Mommsen surveys the history of the resistance that led up to the abortive plot of July 20, 1944. He presents a concise yet definitive survey of the motives behind the various groups who joined the plot, their political aspirations, and what they hoped to gain from removing Hitler. More importantly, he tackles the vexed question of how the resistance leaders viewed the persecution of the Jews in the calculations and their decisions to remove Hitler. The ringleaders' abject failure to deal with the Holocaust will forever remain a blot on the reputation of the resistance that modern Germany views as the struggle for democracy.
Interesting but Very Specialized.......2004-05-10
This is an extended essay on the ideology of a subset of the German resistance to Hitler. Readers looking for a clear narrative should seek elsewhere. In order to read this book you already have to know the basic story of the resistance and have some knowledge of its principal members. Mommsen investigates the ideas and motivations of the non-Communist resistance. This rather small group of individuals was drawn largely from a section of the German upper classes, primarily higher ranking civil servants and officers, often with aristocratic connections. That this small group represented the major internal opposition to Hitler is a testimony to several factors, among them the great success of the Nazis in dominating almost all aspects of society and essentially abolishing the independence of most major social organizations. The Nazis retained some respect for traditional, particularly elitist, conservatives and dissent in these quarters was not pursued the way it was among, for example, working class socialists. The great military success of the Nazi regime made it difficult to recruit allies in the Armed Services or other important sectors of society. The non-Communist resistance was also characteristically conservative in their almost uniform dislike for the Weimer Republic and their suspicion of pluralistic democracy. Many of them pursued utopian ideas of a 'third' way between socialism and capitalism, ideas which often had strong elements of paternalism and authoritarianism. Many of them were at least conventionally anti-Semitic and motivated less by the horrible crimes perpetrated against the Jews than by the corrupting effects such actions had on non-Jewish Germans. While many of their social plans have a distinctly romantic and unrealistic flavor, Mommsen makes the point that it was the ability of the resisters to imagine social alternatives that provided considerable impetus to their corollary ability to actually make plans to remove Hitler. Mommsen also shows the overlap between these very principled resisters and a sometimes allied group of fellow traveling officers and Nazi officials who drifted in and out of the orbit of the core resisters. It was, ultimately, these (to us) rather odd idealists who actually tried to overthrow the Third Reich, an action they undertook with the knowledge that failure was likely. Many of them displayed great physical as well as moral courage. They failed, however, to overthrow Hitler, and almost nothing of what they desired for Germany was realized in the post-war Federal Republic.
Penetrating but also impenetrable.......2003-10-28
A study not of the activities but the ideas of those who tried to kill Hitler in 1944 will disappoint those not wanting an intellectual history of anti-Hitler individuals and groups. From Mommsen's research it becomes clear that those who finally could bring themselves to oppose Hitler even with violent action were not typical Germans. Typical Germans had pretty much by the early 1940's come to support Hitler's regime. These opponents were aristocrats mostly with a smattering of those from other strata of German society, men fearful of what Hitlerism really meant for Germany and Europe. They were little concerned with the niceties of Western liberal values and were not especially motivated against the extreme anti-Semitism of National Socialism. Mostly long hostile to the Weimar Republic and dedicated to third or fourth ways between Fascism, Communism, and Liberalism the anti-Hitler movement was on the other hand all too German in its thought and expression. As admirable as these men were, most of whom were executed by the Nazis in 1944 and 1955, they were also very, very German in their abstruse reactions to the history of European life and thought. They knew in the end how to die nobly but they had nevertheless significantly contributed to the horrors of the evil regime they finally decided to seek to destroy. Even in turning against Hitler they demonstrated the pathological nature of German life and thought.
Germans and Germany remain a mystery. How educated and aristocratic Germans could welcome Hitler remains a mystery. How they thought they could think to replace him with impractical alternatives also remains puzzling.

An inspiring art book for feltmakers and fiber artists.......2003-05-25
This is a small format "coffee table" book, packaged in a grey felt sleeve. The book explores the recent use of felt in fashion, furniture, functional items, and art. The photography is excellent. This is not a "how-to" book for feltmakers, but rather a view of the contemporary state of the craft. All of the text sections are in German and English. Profiles of contemporary feltmakers from around the world are featured, as well. This book would be a good additional to a feltmaker's library to inspire creativity and innovation.
Product Description
Birds are ideal subjects for holistic care. They are especially sensitive to emotional and physical stresses. Based on what we have learned from wild birds and studies completed in the last 10-20 years, this book will help you provide your bird with a longer, healthier life. Each beautifully illustrated chapter is written from two viewpoints, one from the leading holistic avian veterinarian and the other from a bird owner's viewpoint. Holistic care is defined and the value of this type of care in relation to conventional western medicine is discussed. Other interesting topics include the physical bird, the emotional bird, nutrition and special holistic therapies.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and helpful............2004-04-11
In HOLISTIC CARE FOR BIRDS, authors McCluggage and Higdon address preventative care as well as spiritual and emotional healing. They begin with a brief overview of `bird keeping' - Different birds have different needs..Not all birds like to be petted while others may become miserable without constant affection. Sometimes the difference is species specific, other times it is related to the bird's treatment by previous owners.
Obvious physical problems may send you scrambling to the vet, but there are remedies you can keep on hand to deal with life's stresses and less serious physical injuries. For example, according to the authors, mild camomile tea in the bird's water bowl offers a soothing aperitif following a bad "out-of-cage" experience with the family dog or as a palliative for feather picking. Aloe juice used to treat human skin problems as well as Vitamin E and C can also be used to address bird wounds inflicted by cage mates.
The authors address a range of treatments for ailments as diverse as sore feet and broken feathers to heart disease. They do not eschew veterinary care, indeed McCluggage is a DVM as well as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. Higdon has written a number of books on happy, healthy pets (Lovebirds, Quaker Parrots, etc.). The book includes a section on nutrition, as the best health care involves diet.
One of the BEST bird books I've read!.......2000-06-09
I LOVE this book! I use it as a reference guide, and I find it easy to read, logical, and very very helpful! PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU OWN A BIRD!
Holistic Care for Birds.......2000-05-14
This book is very informative and easy to understand. I would use it as a reference manual and it has some very interesting recipes for birdy treats.

Book Description
Not everyone can have the body of a dancer, but the program in Ballet-Fit Workout shows how to achieve many of dancers' desirable physical attributes: a strong, flexible spine; a toned, stable midsection; shapely, defined muscles; and sleek, graceful posture.
Written for people with no formal ballet training, this book uses clear, jargon-free explanations and detailed photos to teach the fitness techniques utilized by world-class dancers. Optimal health is the focus throughout Ballet-Fit Workout, and the author shows how classic dance training not only reshapes the body but also teaches mental focus and leads to a calm, refreshed mind.
Customer Reviews:
Not what you might expect.......2005-08-24
You will, no doubt, open this book and expect pages full of plies, grand battlement, ronde de jambe, etc. But you're not going to find that. What you will find is many movements based more-or-less on the Alexander Technique. Which is fine. Most of us need to relearn how to use our bodies so we are more efficient and graceful in our movements. That said, this is not a workout that's going to help you develop strength - except for the small section containing ab exercises. It's mainly based on stretching, rotating your joints, and the like. The exercises given will help you develop flexibility and grace, and relearn new habits of posture and movement.
I gave this book 4 stars because of it's misleading title and lack of strength-building exercises. But it's not a bad book. I think this would be a fine beginner's intro to Alex.Tech. for someone who can't find a practitioner. But don't expect this program by itself to produce a body that looks like any of the gorgeous ballet dancers that are photographed in this book. (and the dancers they chose do have beautiful bodies!)
