i have loved horses all my life, but watching TV doesnt give you anywhere NEAR the insight you need when actually owning, caring for, sometimes first-aiding horses.
this is a very good, easy to understand horse care, attitude, modest training book. this isnt how to break and make a world class horse, it is how to handle common problems that are almost universal in horses. i have learned so much by using this and other books, i have to recommend to ANYONE who hasnt owned a horse, or has but is only after many years getting back into it, to re-read this and other books like this. rather than state specific detail, just understand this book hits on some of the real everyday problems all horse owners will or have or are facing. it isnt an extremely indepth coeverage of each area, it is more of a " ok,, lets FIX the basic problem now, which will make it easier to get more advanced later" kind of book.
so in that sense, it is ideal. i do wish it was a little longer, or i would give it 5 stars, as there is a few minor areas ( or just ones i am interested in, like foals from newborn to a few months ) that i wanted more depth, BUT, if it covered everything, it would be 1500 pages long, and cost $300..
i recommend this book for anyone who really isnt a genuine expert in most areas of horse care.
Excellent help for first time horse owners........2000-05-01
I have browsed through another horse owner's book and I liked what I saw so I ordered this for myself. It has all the answers to questions that I, as a first time horse owner, have asked. I cant wait to read my own copy in depth. Some of the questions that were answered for me are how to know if my horse is sick, proper shoe care, and other health related issues that i feel are most important.

Lacquer is one of the most important artistic traditions of Burma - and also a living craft. Frequently used to decorate vessels of great style and variety, it is also important in the embellishment of architecture, furniture and musical instruments, in the making of sculpture and even in the Burmese theater. A natural plastic, refined from the sap of a tree, lacquer can be used to elaborate almost any surface, and its visual impact can be stunning - objects are dazzlingly colored, often in scarlet, gold and black, and are frequently inlaid with colored glass to produce an effect of shimmering irridescence.
Until now, Burmese art generally - let along this important branch - has been little studied. This beautifully illustrated book features some 200 items which demonstrate the skill of the Burmese lacquer-craftsman. Many of these came from a recent gift to the British Museum, the Ruth and Ralph Isaacs Collection, while others from national, regional and private collections. A series of essays examines the history of Burmese lacquer, the methods of production, the wide regional variations, the inscriptions found on many of the vessels (a new and important area of study), the role of lacquer vessels in the ubiquitous betel habit, and the Buddhist context of many of the objects.

The British Museum, London, should be applauded for launching the first significant exhbition of Burmese art in a major European institution. The catalogue is well-researched, well-written and presents provocative questions. A pioneering section pertaining to inscriptions on Burmese lacquer is especially interesting. Furthermore, the installation in London at the museum was stunning.
Visions from the Golden Land.......2000-06-12
This is the first authoritative book devoted exclusively to the lacquer ware of Burma (Myanmar). I am an importer of Asian antiques, tribal, and folk art primarily from S.E. Asia, including Burma, and was delighted with the thoroughness of this books content. The range of lacquer ware discussed is quite thorough, the discussion on inscriptions is invaluable and the photographs are excellent. If the chapter on lacquer ware in Sylvia Fraser-Lu's Burmese Crafts Past and Present seemed too short, this is the next book to get. For the very knowledgable and very serious Burmese lacquer collector some of the examples used in the book may be dissapointing. I highly recommend this book.

If you don't live and garden in the Northwest, ignore the title and buy this book anyway. Perhaps these annuals do particularly well in the region, but what is special about Annuals for Washington and Oregon reaches far beyond any specific state. Alison Beck and Marianne Binetti have written a book full of practical advice, packaged in a handy size and shape for carrying around to nurseries. And that is just what you'll want to do, as the first few pages are filled with a pictorial index of color photos of a great number of annuals arranged by common name. You can identify the plant you are interested in, see how it looks in bloom, and then refer to the cultural instructions later on in the book to check on how to site and care for it, as well as to see larger color photos of its form and habit. It's hard to think of a better format for introducing gardeners to the great variety of annuals available today and their many possibilities in the garden. --Valerie Easton

Her movements are uncharacteristic, her words subversive, her dances unlike anything done before—and this is the story of how it all works. A founding member of the famed Judson Dance Theater and a past performer in the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Deborah Hay is well known for choreographing works using large groups of trained and untrained dancers whose surprising combinations test the limits of the art. Lamb at the Altar is Hay’s account of a four-month seminar on movement and performance held in Austin, Texas, in 1991. There, forty-four trained and untrained dancers became the human laboratory for Hay’s creation of the dance Lamb, lamb, lamb . . . , a work that she later distilled into an evening-length solo piece, Lamb at the Altar. In her book, in part a reflection on her life as a dancer and choreographer, Hay tells how this dance came to be. She includes a movement libretto (a prose dance score) and numerous photographs by Phyllis Liedeker documenting the dance’s four-month emergence.
In an original style that has marked her teaching and writing, Hay describes her thoughts as the dance progresses, commenting on the process and on the work itself, and ultimately creating a remarkable document on the movements—precise and mysterious, mental and physical—that go into the making of a dance. Having replaced traditional movement technique with a form she calls a performance meditation practice, Hay describes how dance is enlivened, as is each living moment, by the perception of dying and then involves a freeing of this perception from emotional, psychological, clinical, and cultural attitudes into movement. Lamb at the Altar tells the story of this process as specifically practiced in the creation of a single piece.

the best book on Australia I have read.......1999-07-11
The "Quay" Level 23 2 Phillip Street Sydney NSW 2000.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Carlino Polia Esq." Australian Gentleman, which is a delightful romp through Australian history. My wife and I along with our four children, are business migrants to Australia. Of all the books and magazines given to us by the Australian government in the program, Carlino Polia Esq. shed more light and resolved more questions about Australia. Two of our children, aged 22 and 19, had difficulty putting your book down. They both read to the early hours of the morning enthralled by your yarn and the actual events. When we visit America after emigrating to Australia, we are often besieged with questions about Australia. It is Amazing how little Americans know about Australia in spite of the experiences of world war II. Carlino Polia Esq. relates experiences of the early auto industry not at all unlike that of my family in Cleveland, Ohio which had 22 automobile companies headquartered there prior to World War I. As an attorney who has acquired property in over 30 states in the United States, these sections on Australian property transfer were very enlightening. Over and over again you very subtly bring home to our children that education combined with experience and ethics will likely be rewarded with a quality of life. Again, my ancestors in America cherished the same values as Carlino Polia. I strongly urge you to find an American book distributor. There is a strong likelihood once Carlino Polia is reviewed, it will be well received and movie/TV rights will be sought from you. I could see Carlino Polia Esq. in a TV series, especially in commemoration of Sydney 2000. Just yesterday The Australian newspaper had an opinion column stating "Shrimp on the barbie" and "Crocodile Dundee" image of Australia has overridden the millions of dollars of government ads trying to re-image Australia as a global competitor in complex industries. Maybe tracing Australia's roots through Carlino Polia Esq. is a better antidote to the Mad Maxes and Bushwacker string of movies and books that seem to define Australia to America and other parts of the world. Carlino's involvement with the young artists, taking his paintings to a soirée, a good golfer, then his appearance in white tie and tails with a top hat, tells of Sydney with a sophisticated cultural society from the early 1900s; not much different to that in New York London or Paris at that time.
