    Book Description

    ****Includes Interactive CD****

If you're looking for a gay-friendly place to call home but can't decide among the urban hustle of New York, the laidback seaside of Key West, or the open, daily life of Minneapolis, this book is for you! Travelers, Urban Pioneers, gay families and those searching for a new hometown now have an easy-to-read book that profiles 50 of America's gay-friendliest cities.

Most guidebooks reduce coverage of the local gay community to lists - lists of bars, lists of dance clubs, lists of hotels, lists of resources. 50 Fabulous Gay-Friendly Places to Live surveys each location from a "local's point of view". It features cities that are fun places to live, work, and visit because they encourage and nurture diversity. Each location is described in detail, with special attention paid to information the gay community most wants to know, including:

Gay-positive local politics and policies. A dynamic gay community with well-sponsored activities and events. Fun nightlife in local clubs, bars and music. Cultural and recreational opportunities. Positive gay health and outreach programs.

Life is more than facts and figures, so you won't find a lot of confusing charts and rankings in these gay-friendly profiles. Each contains a vivid description, an overview of the gay community, and practical daily-life information on climate, housing costs, taxes, the local business environment, and much more. Interviews with local gay residents, community leaders, business owners, and cultural leaders create an intimate description of each location. You'll also find helpful phone numbers and websites to make exploring and planning your vacation or relocation easier. Rounding out the book are tips and national resources that will assist in making your own life and city more gay friendly. The book also includes an easy-to-use, interactive CD containing a wealth of information to make your search that much easier—and a lot more fun!

This book went into pretty good detail of the listed cities. I hope there is an updated version soon. It was published in 2005.

If you want a truly Gay Friendly city check out Wilton Manors, Florida. The city is e4stimated to be 30-40% gay. If you want to be somewhere that people don't look twice if you're grocery shopping with your boyfriend or where the main street has more gay businesses than straight and the city counsel has a gay majority then look no more. Just research Wilton Manors (Gay Mecca) online and then come for a visit. I'm sure you will be dying to move here, like I did!! :)

    4 out of 5 stars A good purchase.......2006-08-11

This is a very helpful book. It definitely gives you an idea of what's going on in terms of the gay community in the particular area and which neighborhoods are gay friendly. I wish it went into a bit more depth on the friendliness of the neighbors, so to speak, the actual concentration of gays and lesbians in the area, and there is no info on raising kids in the area; how gay friendly are the schools, etc. I have also checked out Sperlings best places website for info on voting (dems vs. rep) and the gay atlas for info on concentration. But, overall, I am glad I purchased this book.

2 out of 5 stars 50 Gay-Friendly Places to Live for the Wealthy.......2006-07-16

The majority of the places the authors recommend have jobs with a median income of $40,000 to $70,000, yet the median house prices are $500,000 to over $1,500,000. It seems ludicrous to recommend a town where most working people will have to live in apartments.

For example, they recommend Boulder, CO where the median single-family home price is $535,000 and the median household income is $44,748. The typical household would have to save 50% of its pre-tax income for 4.8 years to put a 20% down payment on that typical house.

They warn that Denver, CO can be cold at night even in the summer but no similar warning is given about Boulder, CO.

They warn that the summer is hot and humid in Saint Petersburg, FL but give no such warning about Wilton Manors, FL, Key West, FL or any other recommended city in FL.

    3 out of 5 stars A good start.......2006-03-25

This book is a good starting place for people like me who are looking to permanently leave where they currently live but are not sure how to go about finding a "better" place.
My only criticism is that I thought the book would be a little bit more thorough, although given the retail price, I think it's a good value.
Missing is some basic information, such as state laws regarding gays (there is some local information which is helpful). For instance, they don't bother to tell you when recommending the Atlanta area that Georgia doesn't even have anti-discrimination laws for sexual orientation. While local laws may protect you, if you get to the state supreme court, you won't have a chance.
All in all, though, a useful little book. Perhaps their next edition will be a expanded to include more details.

      Book Description

Historian, scholar, and award-winning author Milton Meltzer outlines the struggle of African Americans for "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, "starting with the landing of the first slave ships on colonial shores. How did over 300 years of slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow laws come to an end in the civil rights movement of the 1960s? What was achieved, and what are the problems still facing us today?

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book... for children and adults.......2004-05-18

This book does a wonderful job of presenting facts in a style that is easy for its target audience (middle schoolers) to understand. The length of the book is appropriate for the target audience, and the within its few score pages it is able to give a concise but complete history of the struggle for human rights in America.

In addition to providing adequately to its target audience, however, the book provides a good overview to adults who are looking for the main facts and little more.

Some might be detracted from the book by what they perceive as its political slant. I found the slant (if you could call it that) appropriate, however. The book highlights the fact that the cause for black people in America did not end in the 1960's.

There is still an income disparity, and the statistical probability of a black man being incarcerated for committing a crime is (should be?) shameful for America. The link between poverty and crime is well established, it's about time that the link between skin colour and poverty was acknowledged. This book aims to make children aware of the fact that the battle for black people in America is not over and that complacency is folly.

1 out of 5 stars DULL BOOK ON A TIRED SUBJECT.......2001-10-16

Have we not indoctrinated the children of America enough on this irrelevent subject? More division is not what our nation needs, yet Meltzer drags out this collection of sorry cliches to keep alive the racial divide that separates our society. If there is racism in America today, it is directed at white Christian males--the only group still permitted to suffer discrimination. This book is representitive of the bilge that wins Newberry Awards--demonstrating that children's book are as brain dead as the "important" tomes reviewed in the New York Times Book Review Magazine.

      5 out of 5 stars A great, short history.......2001-01-24

This book is a great, short history of the battle for civil rights for African Americans. Beginning with the arrival of the first African slaves at Jamestown in 1619, and continuing through to today. The history ends with a chapter spelling out the author's plan for future civil rights action, and then follows a wonderful timeline of important dates and events in the fight for civil rights.

This book is intended for children, but makes a great read for anyone interested in the history of civil rights in the United States. The book is not written with dispassion, there is for example a reference to "Gestapo-like" policemen. But, considering the events that are being recounted, it is hard to imagine how dispassion could possibly be maintained. Overall, this is a very good book, one that I highly recommend.

Like Ms. Bradbury's other fine 8.5 X 11" softback book, this effort is well worth the price. Inside the front cover offers a brief credential of Ms. Bradbury which satisfies the knowledge of the reader knowing that the author is a specialist in her field.

A four page introduction on the history of needlework during this time period helps set the reader to the correct time frame. The bibliography she used is impressive on its own right.

The patterns are easy to trace due to the dark and broad ink lines of the pieces. The patterns are also comfortably large so the reader can copy the design and color it to get an idea of the piec prior to stitching the pattern.

Again, however, the patterns are not referenced as to the actual textile it is copied from. But rest assured, the patterns in the book are from actual pieces and not the author's interpretation of the actual piece.

I was thrilled to receive this book - I love crewel embroidery and this slim book is jam-packed with designs for crewel embroidery.

Frances Bradbury is a talented artist and embroiderer, and she has done some beautiful designs ready for you to adapt to your own projects.

All are fully scaleable, and she has even done up some that just need to be scaled up to be full-sized and wearable (the Stomacher is a beautiful example that several of my friends have said that they want done!). All designs are stand alone, or capable of being put together to make a larger piece.

A short history of crewel embroidery is given, but other than that, the book is an embroidery book in medieval style, and has no stitch instructions or thread recommendations.

This is definitely not a book of designs for the beginner to use, but for one who has mastered some crewel stitches, and is confident about using them to best effect.

I will freely admit that for my next crewel embroidery project (an Elizabethan ladies embroidered jacket), I will be using and adapting designs from this book.).

This book truly is a wealth of inspiration for the Embroiderer who wants to do crewel embroidery.

A classic book on the keeping of North American native fishes. Quinn provides some excellent no-nonsense information on collecting, and sucessfully keeping the more common native species. If you're into keeping gamefish like I am, this is definitely the book for you. My only problem with the book lies in the visual arena: no color photographs and grainy fish drawings. Yuck. If this book utilized color photographs to represent these fishes, then I would give it the full 5 stars. An updated re-release is desperately needed. Despite that, this is probably the greatest book on a very unorthodox hobby. Lets hope this changes soon, as fantastic surprises await many unsuspecting aquarists.

                        Book Description

Staging the Nutcracker is an extraordinary record of artist Mihail Chemiakin's commission from the legendary Kirov Ballet for a new version of The Nutcracker ballet. In this entirely new work, based on an internationally recognized and fiercely defended classic Chemiakin's innovative costume sketches and stage sets reveal a pwerful imagination at work -- one that breathes new life into this world-famous ballet. With a nod to his childhood love for the work of the German writer E.T.A. Hoffman, on whose fairy tale the original Nutcracker ballet was based, Chemiakin has brought a bolder vision to his version of this popular ballet.

A gorgeous explanation and representation of a gorgeous show. Chemiakin is a brilliant artist, and this book gives us a closer look at his spectacular new The Nutcracker. The text sheds light on the genius, covering Chemiakin's thoughts on the progression of the play, act by act, scene by scene. But most of all this is a visual representation of the magic of the show, its source and development, the perfect picturebook for every age. Hurrah!

                            Praise for Sam Pickering:

"The art of the essay as delivered by Mr. Pickering is the art of the front porch ramble."
---The New York Times Book Review

"Reading Pickering . . . is like taking a walk with your oldest, wittiest friend."
                            ---Smithsonian

"What a joy it is to 'mess around' with Professor Sam Pickering!"
                            ---The Chattanooga Times

"Pickering is a barefoot observer of the quotidian who revels in the spectacle and its gift for surprise, prefers the rumpled to the starched, has raised puttering and messing about to an art form, and wrings from it more than a pennyworth of happiness and a life well lived."
                            ---Kirkus Reviews

The movie Dead Poets Society is where most Americans first met Sam Pickering, the University of Connecticut English professor. Robin Williams plays the lead character (loosely based on Pickering), an idiosyncratic instructor who employs some over-the-top teaching methods to keep his subjects fresh and his students learning.

Fewer know that Pickering is the author of more than 16 books and nearly 200 articles, or that he's inspired thousands of university students to think in new ways. And, while Williams may have captured Pickering's madcap classroom antics, he didn't uncover the other side of the author-Sam Pickering as one of our great American men of letters. Like the music of Mozart, the painting of Picasso, or the poetry of Emily Dickinson, you can spot Pickering's writing a mile away; there's no mistaking the Pickering pen. As an ample demonstration of the author's literary gifts, Waltzing the Magpies is his unabashedly lush and Technicolor travelogue from Down Under.

On the face of it, Waltzing is the chronicle of a sabbatical year spent with family in Australia. Yet beneath the surface Pickering's big themes-family, nature, seizing the moment-move in a powerful current that frequently bursts out in moments of ecstatic revelation and intense sensual flourish. Through it all Pickering weaves stories from his fictional Southern town of Carthage, Tennessee, especially when the goings of the outside world get rough.

Waltzing the Magpies is classic Pickering at the height of his literary powers, and places him in the company of such great American essayists as E. B. White and James Thurber, but with an irony and observational prowess that is pure Pickering.
