This book came in handy - but internet message boards were just as handy. I had the most up to date version (2006) - it was completely outdated for Cozumel - last years hurricane completely destroyed several of the locations recommended for "on your own" excursions. Our cruise went to Belize City, Belize and Roatan, Honduras - neither of them were covered in the book.

Ignore the "Imitators" accusations........2001-09-28

Buro Destruct takes a fresh approach to very trendy vector designs, giving things a twisted sometimes darker and more mature edge.

If you're looking for a collection of work akin to the Designers Republic's peak of the early Nineties you will be sorely disappointed. This book is certainly not a manual on how to imitate tDR designs as some might hope.

Using sources from japanese packaging to teapots in a bazaar, this design firm offers a broad range of styles. Their strongest work for me includes the hand drawn studies, and retro-futuristic fonts (reminiscent of arcade games). The 3D work and cut-up photos are not my taste, though cleverly done.

Anything, no matter how "mundane" or "ugly" can be part of a great design. This is the idea that holds this book together, an idea that escapes most designers and the reason i keep pulling it down from my shelves.

Sometimes theres a lack for words in front of a true talent.
The buro destruct team are unparalled in their quest for originality and allmost every visual field they touch becomes solid gold. An original, groundbreaking and absolutley superb design firm, that leaves the rest to squable in their shadow.

This is a strange book - at first glance, many of the designs are quite ugly (mostly because of the colors chosen.) But they are captivating, and the more you stare at the pages, the more sense they make. I suppose you'd have to spend some time thumbing through this book to agree, but if anything can be said about these guys for certain, it's that they are awesome typographers.

The definative sighthound book!.......2004-10-16

I have been enchanted with sighthounds since I was a young girl. I'm still in awe at how they've survived since ancient times virtually the same. This book covers sighthound breeds commonly seen at AKC dog shows: Afghan Hound; Borzoi; Irish Wolfhound; Saluki; Scottish Deerhound; ect.... But there are also fascinating histories of breeds virtually unknown in the USA, or even outside of their homelands. There is also information given on a few breeds believed to be extinct. Photos are not provided for every breed due to the breed's obscurity. The photos & line drawings are all in black & white; some are quite old so the quality isn't the best. I must add that this book is the only one I know of to date that includes information on the Silken Windhound! If you are infatuated by sighthounds as I am, I definately recommend this book to you! It's not for the casual dog person though.

Get an inside story on what recently went wrong in Oregon.......2007-01-10

A somewhat dry accounting, using newspaper clippings whenever available, of mishaps that casual (and quite often very experienced)hikers encounter in what commonly is believed to be safe National Parks. A very quick education in being prepared for the underestimated dangers of dehydration, hypothermia, and heat stress. It is not quite as good as "Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon"or "Death in Yellowstone: Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First National Park", both of which manage to get the message of being careful across in a much more narrative style. If you enjoy "Weather stories" on TV, these will all make for fascinating reading.
PS In the Oregon reference I am talking about the death of CNET editor James Kim, who left the relative safety of his car trying to get help for his family, and the three climbers on Mt Hood that perished shortly after. You will learn of countless expeditions that people insisted on undertaking because they were already there, even though the weather has changed drastically.

Reality check for the Great Outdoors.......2005-08-11

This book is a fine overview of the history of search and rescue in the parks from one of the professionals in the field. In addition to lots of historical information, it provides plenty of food for thought for anybody planning an outdoor trip. There are lots of lessons to be learned from the mistakes of others.

Left me wanting to know more.......2004-02-19

If you are interested in the subject matter, it would be hard not to enjoy this book. I was amazed at the number of bodies that had to be left in the parks because they couldn't be retreived for one reason or another. I was also surprised to learn how many planes had crashed onto the lands or into the mountains of national parks. There are also the things you would expect, such as falls from mountain climbing and people who get lost while hiking. It was sad to read about the rangers who risked their lives and became heroes to save others, only to read about some of them succumbing to the dangers of the park themselves later on in the book. Many of the stories made me wish there was additional information, because I wanted to know more about what happened to these people. Overall a very engrossing book.

Compelling Gathering of Varied Narratives.......2001-12-26

As the NPS's Chief National Emergency Services Coordinator the author spent many years in the search and rescue business. In the course of his career he had access to the original records and was able to select most dramatic and cautionary stories. Each covers at most a few pages but the reader will want to keep reading. Very hard to put down and a substantial amount of research and good writing.
Most emphasis is on the post 1940 period since WW II when the development of modern aerial search and rescue techniques, as pioneered in the armed services, influenced the postwar organization and methods. The Air Force became responsible for inland activities and the Coast Guard for the sea margins. Ground based searches remained the primary responsiblity of the big land management agencies such as the Park Service, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management.

Take it with Salt.......2000-11-15

An excellent collection of decades of searches and rescues in National Parks all over the USA. Each search and rescue story runs from a paragraph to a page or two. Helpful photos are included for many of the stories, plus the book has great chronologies for each decade and a very good index. The author highlights National Parks' efforts - often ignoring, misconstruing, or discounting the efforts of other agencies involved in many of the search and rescues - a bias which occasionally mars this book.

This is the most comprehensive, educational, practical, inspirational and motivational book I have ever found. It is full of quotes that can be applied to everyday life as well as the world of dance. Bobby Boling unlocks the mysteries that seem to be a part of the dancers world. He takes you through auditions and classes as well as other areas, and tells you exactly what you can expect. I am a dance teacher myself, I have purchased many copies to be shared among my students. They too, have found it encouraging and inspirational. It is so refreshing to have a once professional, turned teacher, dancer, share the story of how it works in a very easy to read and interesting book. He speaks from the heart and tells you straight up how it is. Provides the Details other Books don't.......2002-09-08

I have read several home-buying books and two other mortgage books and found this to be the only source for detailed information. As another reviewer suggested, if you want the feel-good basics then look elsewhere ("Navigating the Mortgage Maze", by Turnauer or "The Centuray 21 Guide to Choosing your Mortgage"). My view is that if you are taking the time to read a book on a subject, you want details. I find generalities and broad sweeping statements a waste of time. This text provides a breadth and depth of information in a clear and succinct manner. My only complaint is that the book could be updated with a newer edition. However this 10 year-old text is by no means out of date since the author gives you the framework to understand everything in the fast-changing mortgage industry.

Very Useful and Informative.......2002-03-16

Nine times out of ten the biggest factor that decides whether or not you successfully buy or sell a real estate property is -- financing. And yet it is the one area people know the least about. By understanding home loans and how they work, you dramatically increase your chances. And this book is the best on the subject I have read. The writer is a professional experienced mortgage broker who writes well. The bottomline, as the writer states, is "Most loans...are approved or denied based on some very fundamental rules." It's really good to know these fundamentals.

This Book Doesn't Deliver.......2002-02-06

I bought this book after it was rated one of the top ten real estate books of the year in the Los Angeles Times real estate section. Boy, was I disappointed. This book didn't come close to living up to its promises. The author gave too much information and not enough direction for the typical layperson. He explains the reasons behind all the fees that are attached to loans, but does little to explain how to avoid or reduce them. He describes the different types of loans available, but doesn't really tell you why you should choose one over another. This book was a mostly a waste of time. You are better off reading the section about mortgages in Home Buying For Dummies and finding yourself a good mortgage broker.

I hesitated at first, I'd had a home loan before. What else was there to learn? I cannot put this book down. There is so much to know about home loans and this author writes it in easy to understand language. I wish I had this book 10 years ago. The is an excellent, easy to understand book packed with information that I highly recommend everyone read before applying for a home loan.

Never Start an Aquarium without it........2000-10-15

If you already started an aquarium without it, do not go any further without buying this book first. From choosing the proper place and lights for the aquarium, to the effects of No2 and Phoshpates on your beloved fish, this book says it all. All in all it is understandable and implementable. What I liked about the book most is that it does not just "touch on" everything, it gives you all you need to know in details, yet, it is never boring or too technical. Beautiful pictures, and full of little secrets.

An introductory book for water plant beginner.......1999-06-28

I am little dissapointed with the content of the book as its title does not match its content. The water technology and aquarium science are not covered in depth. It introduces the equipment for growing plant. However you can know it from the FAQ. There are not many new information comparing to internet. So this book is only suitable for beginner. Another point is the photographs and pictures are too old.

This is a "MUST HAVE" book for any freshwater aquarium hobbyist. Beautiful illustrations and content will help you understand basic fishkeeping principals from water chemistry to plants selection, from hi-tech Carbon Dioxide fertilization to most common fish descriptions. The authors wrote:"...to publish something that was different in content and presentation quickly challenged us". Apparently, they excelled at this! I put this book among such classical volumes as Baensch "Aquarium Atlas". Its content and way of delivering the information proves to be helpful for the beginners and experienced aquarists.

This is an interesting book.
The only reason I will not give it 5 stars,is because I found it to be a little narcissistic in its nature and premise.It has that feeling of being yet another opportunity for Ms. Addis to show off how much she looks like Marilyn.
Apart from that,I guess it could be very helpful for Marilyn wannabees,with its tips,makeup and otherwise.
It is presented in high-quality fashion.Not a cheap book:beautiful pictures,good quality paper and presentation.

In "Be Marilyn!: A Glamorous Guide to Living Blonde", Addis reviews a little bit of Monroe's career, behind-the-scenes secrets to her makeup and image, how she personally got started peforming as Marilyn and where it's taken her, and information on other Monroe impersonators.

I love to study Marilyn's image, movies, and photographs, and Addis does give alot of insight into the Monroe creation: revealing, for instance, that it took hairdresses and costumers up to six hours to get the real Marilyn ready for public appearances. The book offers a good amount of information. Marilyn Monroe's look, to the credit of the late actress herself and those who impersonate her, is not easy to pull off. Makeup application steps, hairstyle and wig techniques, costume guidelines, and mannerism styles are all included.

For those who simply admire Marilyn and the glamour of her era, there are tips on how to "Marilynize" your image such as minimizing stage makeup techniques for everyday, and including tapered skirts and heels into your work wardrobe.

The book is cute, classy, fun, and informative. It's not intended to be a biographical guide to Marilyn Monroe, but it is a tribute to how the indelible effects of her image can either be fun to replicate or actually become a full-time profession for those with the committment to impersonate her.

Great book for a Marilyn impersonator!.......2004-11-12

I have been a Marilyn Impersonator for many years in my local area. Although I'm not working in the Las Vegas Legends show and traveling the world as Gailyn is, I thought the book was very helpful to any aspiring Marilyn Impersonator or any fan wanting to learn more about the Marilyn style or image. The book is filled with many helpful tips on doing the Mailyn make up, wearing a wig, Marilyn costumes and style of clothes and heels, how to work an audience, making jokes, Being tasteful in keeping with the Marilyn image,How to make a portfolio, what movies to study,etc.. The book has many photo's of Gailyn as Marilyn (who does look alot like Marilyn), also Marilyn photos with little interesting stories about Marilyn singing to the troops in Korea and Happy Birthday to the President etc..Plus Gailyn tells her story of life as a MM impersonator and how she got started. Many stories were funny and cute like once when she sang "Heart Belongs to Daddy" and an older gentleman picked her up off her feet and wanted to dance lol! I found the book to be very entertaining and fun. Although I would like to learn more about Marilyn's dance movements and walk and more details on her musical side. This book does cover the basics!

Cute, but a little dissapointing..........2002-01-17

For Marilyn fans, this book is a nice addition to a collection. I learned several neat facts and tid-bits about Marilyn's lifestyle, but it didn't focus on anything specific. It was more of a vague instruction manuel for impersonaters. It also focuses on the author's life just as much, if not more, as it does on Marilyn's. I was hoping to get a book on Marilyn's mannerisms and the like-- but I was disappointed. I'm glad it was a gift to me, and that I didn't have to pay for it myself.

Be Marilyn? Seems like one of my friends thought I should at least try when they bought me this book for my birthday this year. Let me first say, I have always loved Marilyn Monroe as a charasmatic actress - but have never been overly concerned with "Marilyn the Myth"...this book, however, initially intended as a "how to" from people who loved me, turned out to be more.

Intelligently crafted by Gailyn Addis, an unbelievably, almost uncanny Marilyn Look-a-like was clearly well researched, planned and written. The photographs of both the author (as Marilyn) and Marilyn herself, are worth the price of the book alone. And the "HOW TO" section...well let me tell you girls...instead of watching TV one night, get out your (eyemakeup) pencil sharpner and sit in front of a mirror with this book. You'll have fun, boost your image(blonds may not have more fun, but they sure can look like they are!)and maybe shake up your love life alittle. Okay, that's asking alot from a book called BE MARILYN -but give it a read, Marilyn would have!
