Duff Hart-Davis' FAUNA BRITANNICA has a specialized focus which may limit its audience to British libraries, but this colorful and weighty reference will prove a strong work for any whose interest in animals has been awakened. Creatures wild and domesticated which have lived and now live in the British Isles are covered in colorful detail enriched by a healthy dose of natural history.

"Must-Have" Resource for this History Writer.......2003-09-20

I checked this book out of my local library while working on a novel that is placed in Southern Scotland/Northern England in the 500's A.D/C.E. I needed to know the fauna of the area at this time. Not only did I learn this but I gleaned a host of other historical details about the times and people that raised, hunted and/or feared these animals. It is such an excellent resource - with a diverse bibliography that helped me get to prime sources - that I have chosen to purchase it for my personal library. The price tag is extremely reasonable for the in-depth information and stunning photography of this well written, easy to read book.

Comprehensive, but would like more opinionated text.......2007-06-12

I bought this guide, plus Moon Northern California Camping: The Complete Guide to Tent and RV Camping (Moon Outdoors) and Foghorn Outdoors California Hiking: The Complete Guide to More Than 1,000 Hikes (Foghorn Outdoors). I like that it specializes in No. Calif. I wish it were a little more opinionated and would highlight the MUST-SEE attractions, e.g., see this/don't bother with that/that's a MUST-SEE/that's a little hokey. But overall, it's a good companion to the other two books above.

Pricey But Indispensable.......2006-01-20

If you're only going to buy one NorCal travel guide, Moon Handbooks Northern California is it. It covers sites, lodging & camping, eateries, and more, all in a down-to-earth style, giving you tips and insights you won't find in typical guidebooks. I've owned each edition, and each one has taken a physical beating because I live in Northern California, I keep this guide in the car at all times, and I refer to it frequently.

The newest edition (4th) is an improvement over the 3rd, beyond the innumerable updates. The listings now include web addresses for the first time. In addition, open the book to any page (in the middle 80%) and the book will lie flat, so you can write notes at a table without having to hold the book open with your hand. Moreover, the paper is thinner, so the book is thinner (and therefore easier to work with), even though the 4th edition contains more pages. These last two points might seem minor, but when you're traveling, you're more likely to refer to a book that isn't a pain in the butt to use.

Out of date listings, but good general info.......2003-08-14

In general I like the Moon Guides. I appreciate them for the practical, honest advice about attractions -- if it's a tourist trap, they'll tell it as it is. -- and the mix of both high- and low-end restaurants and hotels. However, this particular guide has become obsolete very quickly. I used it for my trip down the California coast this July. In general, the information about attractions was mostly valid (prices were off), but I found myself repeatedly driving to restaurants listed in the guide that had since closed. Two different restaurants in the Redwoods that the guide said would be serving dinner were closed or out of business. In the end, we had to keep driving the highway and looking at every exit for restaurants not listed in the guide. Our experiences all the way down the coast as far as Big Sur were similar. If you buy this guide, you'll have to supplement it with another book for the hotel and restaurant listings.

Best One-Stop Guidebook for Northern California.......2000-07-06

As a busy parent of three children, I am always on the look out for new weekend adventures--this book has it all. It gives great history, detail, local color, places and events...even usable local area maps.

With listings by regions, Kim Weir has a succinct novelists eye for what makes Northern California beat. Makes great reading...I keep this large 1000 page pocket book at my nightstand to read colorful stories about places I might someday visit. Equally compact, I then load the book in my car for ready reference to see what's hot whereever we roam.

Written with the insight of Mark Twain, this is an excellent source for anyone wanting to capture the diversity of Northern California at it's greatest. Lot's of fun. Quite readible. Full of nice pictures.

Well worth the $ for the new 2000 edition. Congrats to Moon Press for another winner. Please keep those updates comming.

As someone who is in the wine industry, I've never had a more borrowed book than this one. It is a great resource and I refer to it frequently for dining and activity options. Oh yeah and wineries of course. I especially enjoy the way it's written. It's very entertaining yet informative. For those of you with a no-nonsense way of life, this is the book for you.

Wonderful Book, Very Thorough.......2006-01-28

I'm fairly new to the Bay area and hadn't had a chance to check out any wineries, mostly because I didn't know where to go. My husband and I just got back from a long weekend in Napa Valley. We spent a day biking around the Rutherford area wineries (which got interesting in the afternoon!), and another day sleeping in late and spending the rest of our time in St. Helena (so charming). We had a great time, and I wouldn't have known about half the things we did if I hadn't picked up this book first. It's really quite knowledgable, with local information, great hotel and restaurant recommendations, and a little something for wine beginners and experts (I'm the first type, I'll admit, but I had a great time). Anyway, great book!

An o k handbook, but a much better fire starter...........2001-11-24

I was given this book by a good friend of mine for my 67th birthday last October. A good friend, a man with good taste and a great sense and wonder for the outdoors. But I must be candid about this book. It simply sucks. Kim Keir is not only biased, but is a poor writer who lacks scope and detail in her descriptions of the great Northern Cal.

Encyclopedic, but biased.......1999-04-17

In general Moon travel guides are encyclopedic, and "Northern California Handbook" at nearly 800 pages of fine print is not an exception. Hotels and restaurants are subjectively described rather than rated, which I find preferable to the AAA approach. I purchased the guidebook for a visit to the "gold country", and unfortunately found it to be offensive. It refers to miners as "barbarians"and "lustful legions", refers to use of pig latin by miners as "hog" latin, refers to the 1849 gold rush as "the peak years of greed", hard rock mining is refered to as a "corporate raid", hard rock miners are described as being "like monstrous moles burrowing ... to bleed ancient veins", describes the very pleasant and beautiful Malakoff Diggins State Park as "horrifying" and "ghoulish", calls mining "land rape". The author gleefully describes bigotry toward Chinese miners, but is apparently oblivious of her own prejudice toward non-Asian miners--many of whom were Latin Americans (including Mexicans among others), free Black Americans, and Cherokee Indians from Georgia. It is not at all clear that Chinese miners were less "greedy" nor otherwise morally superior to non-Asian miners. Indeed far more Chinese miners were injured and killed in tong wars among themselves than by non-Asians. I am part Native American myself, and I personally have a deep seated pro-Asian prejudice as a result of a very kindly Chinese neighbor when I was a small child, but I manage to avoid expressing such prejudice in print, and certainly do not express it by denigrating non-Asians and non-Native Americans

This now hard-to-find book is a fine short account of the life of the notorious Civil War politician/general, Daniel E. Sickles. I am a practicing metalsmith of 35 years. This much needed book covers it's subject from every perspective. It will become a valuable asset to historians, collectors and craftsmen. great book, poor title.......2005-08-23

This book is not a guide to ¨owning¨ any kind of bird.

In fact, they have a very pretty picture of a shiny, bright red cardinal. It looks like a waxy, perfect apple, as it stands with its breast poofed out. He says: Nope, can't touch that if you live in the united states.

Did I miss something?

Even less, is it about owning ¨a finch.¨ - on the very first page, he says that they are cute on their own, but they need to be in a group. Next few pages cover compatibilty between species, in an aviary setting, and then discusses mixed aviaries.

The pictures are beautiful, of both common and uncommon varieties. He generally shifts from care, pulls a 180, and presents a ¨laundry list¨of the various species, their native habitat, and their behavior. Great for the bird enthusiast!

I was put off by the title, because well, we don't own any living species. I saw the book on sale and I picked it up on a whim. I'm glad I saw beyond the title. This is a really great book if you already know something about birds.

Personally, I would recommend the ¨all about your (pet) series¨ or barron's pet manuals, if you want a basic guide to caring for your birds.

An "Okay" Finch Introduction Book with Nice Photos.......2000-03-04

The information is quite a general introduction to finches. But it is well worth the small price for the nice glossy embossed photographs of several species. Worthwhile to have as a handy photo reference on the shelf.

It was a good all around book(if you own various types of finches)and it was somewhat informative but vary vauge in the information that it did include. It is not a very good investment if you are looking for more of an educated outlook on the care and breeding of a certain group or type of finch.

Excellent book for every musician.......2000-01-01

This book explain the theory behind many aspects of music ,focusing on the perceptual ,"sound" aspect, rather than presetning theory in a completely abstract way. It lacks only deeper explanations and references when it presents harmony and it's relation to frequencies.A little more mathematical treatment or just some references to those interested in going deeper in the subject would be good,even thoguh it's not the main goal of the book. The best part is that the "sound" section of the book wich is just marvellous, inciting insights in the very essence of music.The tritone subject had excellent coverag,and provided me a needed knowledge. It helped me a lot in understanding music and widening my perception. Almost every musician can make a good deed to himself reading this book.

In relation to theory, this is a good book; however,it needs a better diagrams that describe the theory ,plus is a good idea to put some practice diagrams so the person can practice at the same time with the book.

An impressive achievement!.......1998-11-25

The title of this book is a little daunting and, before I opened it, I was expecting an arid, technical work of interest only to serious students of music. This is not the case. The book addresses itself to anyone who wants to develop their understanding of this medium and assumes no prior knowledge. It begins with a laudably succinct chapter on world music which discusses musical traditions and variation. It then goes on to deal with musical concepts such as timbre, tone and pitch. Discussion of the various modes and structure of music follow, including introductions to melody, rhythm and meter. The narrative - which is fluent and engaging throughout - is linked to a CD full of examples to illustrate points made in the text. The book is remarkably user-friendly and, with its A4 format and margin notes, reminded me of the way the Open University present their course material. It took me just under a month to work my way through it but I'm glad I took the time. I can now pontificate with some authority about the technicalities of a medium I've always wanted to know more about (but was afraid to ask!). There's bound to be a market for this impressive achievement.

Widsom for Older Sons who are baseball lovers.......2007-09-30

After my 77th birthday I remembered to pick-up my older daughter's birthday gift for my 76th birthday! It is a sure-fire winner! When I had gotten past the middle of Tim Russert's stories from a wide variety of sons and daughters, I chose five top favorite Chapters: "Daddy's Girl, "The Character, "Hands and Feet, "Being There, and "Baseball."

Tim's love for the Cleveland's Indians and the NY Yankees came shining through! His personal relationships with the stories of Truman & MacArthur, Rudy Giulani, Al Gore, and Russ Limbaugh provide profound wisdom from a huge variety of Fathers. As I noted foreign names like Bill DeSisto, John Smyntek, Vince Guerriori, Arnold Annunziata, I came across a lovely story of "Hermie's Hands" from Knoxville, Tenn. His name was Jon Hernmanson.

(Too bad that my Father who was employed as one Knoxville Water Worker never came to know Hermie with eight fingers on his hands!)

How this gets below 5 stars is beyond me. This book is what it is and is long overdue. There is no genius behind it because it's just a collection of peoples' stories. Russert didn't write it, but he wrote Big Russ and Me. I haven't read that, but it must be pretty good to garner this kind of response.

When I was last home, my dad gave me the copy because I'm working on a project pertaining to the same subject matter. He hadn't read it yet, so he just told me to read it and send it back. It is so good that I sent him a copy with this note, "Dad, this book is way too good. This copy isn't coming back to you, so here is one for you. Love, Christien."

One of the best books on parenting. Not a scientific approach but rather a by-the-seat-of-your-pants look at what it means to be a good parent. You get a peak into the minds of so many children, today's adults, something that is impossible to do with your own kids. A must read for any parent.

Peter Carey's "A Letter to Our Son" is an honest portrayal of a relationship, being a father and being a partner in parenthood. Anyone who is a parent should buy this book. It is short enough to be read before you go to bed - But I have read it at least five times. Beautifully presented and written, this is a book that I treasure.
