      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource!.......2006-11-28

I'm in the travel industry and am oftentimes disappointed by the out-of-date information found in other cruise guides. I consider The Complete Guide to Caribbean Cruises, however, to be one of the absolute best resources to use when planning a cruise vacation. The guide has a great layout, is highly accurate, and provides the kind of information useful to both novice and "expert" cruisers.

In my opinion, The Complete Guide to Caribbean Cruises is a must read for anyone considering a cruise!

This is the best guide for Carribean Cruises! I checked out others before ordering this one and this one was the most comprehensive. I have never been on a cruise before but, after reading this book, I feel very prepared!

This book really brought World War I to life. I was surprised at how little I really knew about this war. This may be billed as a kid's book, but people of all ages will enjoy it. It's a great source for learning a lot about the war in a short period of time. The entire Eyewitness series is worth checking out.

        Book Description

The Great War haunts the world still. It slaughtered a generation of young men; claimed limbs, wounded souls; drenched battlefields in blood; made sad legends of the Western Front, Gallipoli, and Jutland, and made heroes of poets; farmers, and factory workers. Clerks it made into Tommies, doughboys, or the Hun. And in this new Mammoth volume the voices of such eyewitnesses to history as these are heard again. So are the words of generals, statesmen, and kings. From the trenches in Flanders to the staff rooms of the Imperial German Army, with the Land Girls in England and U-boat crews in the Atlantic, alongside T. E. Lawrence in Arabia’s desert and the Red Baron in the air—with a variety of extracts from letters, speeches, memoirs, diaries, and dispatches, this gripping collection covers each year and every facet of World War I. Among its wide range of witnesses are King George V, Robert Graves, Leon Trotsky, Erwin Rommel, Ernst Junger, Ernest Hemingway, American aviator Eddie Rickenbacker; and Winston S. Churchill. The pieces in this volume compose a stirring human drama of the conflict that redrew the map of the modern world and determined the political course of the twentieth century.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars good book on a bad time.......2005-12-14

One can read many books covering the campaigns and personalities of World War I and still come away with an incomplete picture of what the war was really about. The strategies, the national goals of the participants, and the political fallout - ushering in the destruction of empires that had lasted for hundreds of years, Bolshevism, fascism and Naziism, with all that was to come out of that - are all obviously important, but they do not reach down far enough into the basic and elemental experience of the common soldier in the field.

Jon E. Lewis has done a commendable job of editing over 180 first hand accounts of what the war was like, almost all of the pieces being written by average men and women who participated on every level of the conflict. The most poignant are from letters home, diary entries, and reminisces after the fact, coming from soldiers, nurses, and low-level commanders, telling of the hell of the trenches, the disease, the constant and maddening shelling, and the death, dismemberment, and maiming all around. The picture that arises out of the constant repitition of one account after another, is senseless, sickening, wasteful and pointless tragedy.

There are also excerpts of better-known memoires, particularly from Churchill, TE Lawrence, Foch, and finally, in a 33-page indulgence at the very end of the book, from Douglas Haig. Coming after 450 pages of slaughter and annihilation, so much of it caused by stupid and unimaginative "leadership" by such as Haig, this final summary of lessons learned and recap of the war effort as led by himself is enough to sicken one. It remains a mystery why this man was not lynched by his own soldiers.

The heros of the book are the average soldier in the field, bearing the brunt of the savagery day after day, dealing with conditions no animal could survive in, regardless of which side of the conflict they were on. For Lewis, there is essentially no difference in the experiences of a French vs a German vs an English vs a Russian soldier. Lewis does not deal in politics or assigning 'blame' to anyone, but rather deals at the micro level with the plight of everyman. The impact is crushing. One comes away from the book with a full and complete understanding of the old saying about the British army, 'lions led by donkeys.'

It's a powerful book and well worth the time invested. Lewis' spare editing and insightful though brief comments add to the wealth of material presented here as well, and overall has done an impressive job.

5 out of 5 stars Best Single Volume History of World War I.......2007-02-20

This is the best single volume history of World War I that I have ever seen. It is balanced between what was happening where, with why it was happening. Perhaps there is more on the 'why' in this book than in any other I have seen. It is well illustrated and well documented with hundreds of first hand reports from diary entries, letters, newspaper reports, speeches and other original documents.

Each of the twelve chapters begins with an introductory essay, followed by an chronology of the period, and then the first hand reports. I find this approach to be excellent. The separation of the narrative from the detail allows the author to concentrate on the big picture while including all of the details in the later section.

Even after reading Dr. Carlisle's excellent description I still find it hard to believe that the nations of Europe were so ready for war that the really rather minor events in the Balkans would lead to such slaughter. I suppose that the leaders simply didn't know, and couldn't believe what was going to happen.

Although this book has been out a while, it is a great handbook for anyone who is clergy or who wants to hold a ceremony for a treasured animal. Book Description

A legendary editor at The New Yorker during its first thirty-four years, Katharine S. White was also a great garden enthusiast. In March 1958 she began publishing her popular column, "Onward and Upward in the Garden." Her first column elicited loads of fan mail, but one letter in particular caught her attention. From Elizabeth Lawrence, a noted southern garden writer, it was filled with suggestions and encouragement. When Katharine wrote back her appreciation, she reported on her Maine garden and discussed the plants and books that interested her. Thus began a correspondence that would last for almost twenty years, until Katharine's death in 1977. Two Gardeners is a collection of these luminous letters, edited and introduced by Emily Herring Wilson. The letters bring to life the unique epistolary friendship between two intelligent women, the "formidable" Mrs. White and the "shy" Miss Lawrence, both avid gardeners and readers, both at a stage of life when to make a new friend was rare indeed: when they first wrote to one another, Katharine was sixty-two, Elizabeth, fifty-four. More than 150 letters went back and forth during the course of their correspondence, though Katharine and Elizabeth would meet face-to-face only once. Whether talking about gardens or books, friends or family, each held a special place in the other's life. Illustrated with photographs of both Katharine White and Elizabeth Lawrence, their families, gardens, and houses, this book is a special treat for gardeners, literature lovers, and anyone who delights in reading about women's friendships.

The TWO GARDENERS in question are Katherine White of New Yorker fame and Elizabeth Lawrence who wrote a garden column for years for the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina. White's columns on gardening written for the New Yorker magazine were compiled by her husband E. B. White (CHARLOTTE'S WEB, STUART LITTLE) and published after her death in 1977 in the book entitled ONWARD AND UPWARD IN THE GARDEN. Lawrence wrote a number of books, including THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE and THE LITTLE BULBS. Her book THE MARKET BULLETINS was completed by the New Jersey gardener Alan Lacy. The market bulletins were wonderful publications farm women in the South used to communicate information about seeds, plants, animals, receipts (what they called recipes), and other items they for sale or being sought. Elizabeth shared a good deal of information about the market bulletins which were not published north of Virginia with Katherine whose one interests lay with garden catalogues when their friendship began.

Lawrence and White corresponded for several decades. The two women discussed their gardens, their columns, their books, and their lives. In the early part of their correspondence, they often wrote each other by return mail. Toward the end of Katherine's life, the letters were few and far between as illness began to affect her movement and ability to see. In spite of their suffering, they continued to observe the world around them and relay how things were going in the garden-the latest blooms, the ravenous mice, the unexpected cold snap, the new greenhouse. Their words remind me of the hope and comfort women have long experienced when a letter from a loved one arrives. As my 87-year old aunt with whom I still correspond says, it doesn't matter what you write, the smallest thing matters.

The editor of this collection of letters Emily Wilson, quotes a librarian who remarked after having read the letters Elizabeth and Katherine wrote to each other, "I got a feeling of moral interdependence on a creative level. Somehow I had viewed the creativity of successful people as a strong force that perhaps needed channeling but not encouragement. Now, on this new-to-me-plane, I see again that no man is an island."

As the editor of TWO GARDENERS/KATHARINE S. WHITE AND ELIZABETH LAWRENCE, I welcome hearing from readers. I am now writing the biography of Elizabeth Lawrence and would benefit from hearing others' understanding of her, both in these letters and in her books. Emily Herring Wilson

Delightful! The correspondence of 19 years between White and Lawrence is insightful, informative and elegant! Their letterse (far more elegant than e-mail) give us glimpses into life in the 60's and 70's and beyond. This book, which is expertly edited by Emily Herring Wilson has inspired a perennial garden at our Wisconsin home and a renewed interest in the writings of E.B. White, not to mention the writings of Katharine White and Elizabeth Lawrence. These two career women and ladie were supportive and encouraging of one another for 19 years!

I recommend all Mr. Nagrin's books, every one of them is excellent & has both spiritual and practical info. This one is great. Bravo!

                                  5 out of 5 stars a joy to read.......2002-04-18

I love the latest book! I took it with me on a trip I took in February and read it the entire trip. Three plane rides later, I was still reading in the evenings, and the whole way home. My book is now dog-eared with underlining, corners of pages folded over, etc. It sits on my desk and I open it up for encouragement and inspiration, and share passages with my students. Thank you for a lovely contribution to my world of dance.
