Look, but don't read.......2002-06-29
Poorly laid out souvenir book. Nigel Dennis's pictures are fine, but the captions are badly positioned. The maps are few and devoid of detail. The biggest problem is the text, which is largely a geology treatise on the park...fine for the Grand Canyon, or Purnululu, but not Kruger, where the animals are the highlight. Very little on animal/animal interaction, the phenomenal bird life, fascinating riverine environments, etc. Save your money...there's more and better organized information in the pamphlet you get when you pay your entry fee to the park.
An exciting summary of this complex African ecosystem........1998-08-17
The pictures, the dialog, and the maps leave one with a haunting awareness of the complexity of natural systems. Animals, plants, and geology weave together into a balance that is always changeing.

Not the best guidebook.......2005-11-27
I was disappointed with this guidebook- it was poorly laid out and skimmed over areas. Basic information and historical notes were okay. I mainly used the guidebook in Amsterdam, and found it too bulky and time-consuming to use efficiently. If you are going to Amsterdam, I would recommend Lonely Planet's Best of Amsterdam (see my other review). This guidebook was simply okay. While it was accurate, I would suggest looking for another book.

Seriously Dull Book - But Needed It Nonetheless!.......2005-05-10
My 16-year-old daughter was preparing for The Global History and Geography Regents Examination, a standardized assessment for students enrolled in New York schools.
This book was recommended reading to prepare her for the test. From multinational economics to human rights issues, wars, and technology, this book was a great resource for studying. I expect her to really well on this exam, and this book should ensure that she does!

Living With A Border Collie.......2007-01-06
If I were to write this book, I'd title it "Coping With a Border Collie", but the book was pretty much on target as I read the book at work. You have to know one or own one to understand. My Border Collie is more like a "borderline disorder" Collie, along with the herding and devotion to family, it has a mind of its own. This is a great book to read and own, really enjoyed stories from actual owners.

... It is a WONDERFUL book, full of very clear large photographs ("over 830 color photographs"). I bought this book in London and had to carry it home to the U.S. It is big and heavy, but it was worth it. If you appreciate the style of Liberty and Co., you need this book.

The tremendous upsurge of interest in garden history and design in recent years has prompted a renewed fascination with the art and artifacts of garden ornament. Those decorative objects--buildings, statues, urns, balustrades, trellises, fountains, ironwork, seats--lend character and definition to garden layout and play an important part in contemporary horticultural design. One of the most significant additions to the literature of horticulture in recent times, this volume surveys ornament in garden design of the past and analyzes the use of different types of ornament in gardens old and new. George Plumptre traces the use of ornamental features throughout the history of the Western garden from the great formal gardens of Italy and France to the more intimate creations of contemporary design. Taking the principal categories of ornament in turn, he shows how, over the last five hundred years, garden designers have used stone, wood, and metal to enhance and modify the natural features of the landscape. He then analyzes the role of ornament in modern garden design, showing how long-held and tested principles of design can be applied imaginatively in the typical modern garden. Finally, there is an illustrated survey of the great variety of ornaments that can still be found, and that are well within the reach of the modern gardener. The photographs of contemporary gardens are the work of Hugh Palmer. His pictures, rich in atmosphere and acutely sensitive to detail, make Garden Ornament doubly indispensable for garden historians as well as for gardeners in search of detailed information and inspiration.

This book is amazing! The photos are so beautiful...it's like being in Europe, experiencing the scenery for yourself. 90% of the photographs are full page spreads. All the ornamentation and statuary that was used is so breathtaking.

A well designed, documented, illustrated catalog of ideas and masterpieces. The good thing here is that you can apply all these beautiful ideas. You can buy statues, chairs, fountains and plant the right vegetation around it (or the other way around). You will love this book. You might even keep it for yourself if you planned to offer it to your parents. Buy two of them. You won't regret it.

Helpful, Anecdotal.......2006-09-05
Daniel Nagrin's book was a novelty when it was written almost 20 years ago. Now with so many baby boomers entering their senior years and the boom of recreational exercise, his book can be a life saver, or at least a body saver.
There's a lot of great information in this book, even if you aren't a dancer. Dancers have many kinds of injuries that overlap with other athletic activities--a knee, after all, is still a knee whether you use yours to do grande plies or squats or jumping mogels on the ski slopes. Weight management often involves the same tools no matter what your goal, and anyone who has suffered sports injuries has struggled with inconsistent medical advice. Doctors are far more saavy now about sports injuries than they were 20 years ago, but this book will still provide a reality check for many readers.
If your knee takes you out of the dance studio (as mine has) and you're determined to get back in there (as I am), this book is well worth the time while you're sitting on the couch icing your knee. I'm finding a lot of helpful advice and a lot of motivation, too. Nagrin does a lot to encourage and motivate you, in spite of the naysayers.
If you're over 40 and still want to dance your best, this book can instruct, encourage and educate you on how to reach your goals. It may be a little hard to find, but it's worth it. Written in conversational style and full of anecdotes from Nagrin's long career, How to Dance Forever should be on the bookshelf of every dancer who's determined to keep working in the studio, well into old age.
Astute and practical, witty and wise... a great read!.......1998-07-22
This book fills a major void in the dance world -- finally, a practical guide to living, fully and long, so that one can dance forever! Daniel Nagrin's very clear practices and philosophy address many issues arising in a long dance career. Advice on how to eat, rest, train, rehearse, and perform and delightful anecdotes from his long and colorful career are are peppered throughout the pages. Most interestingly, Mr. Nagrin addresses the less tangible but essential inner work on the soul/spiritual level that must be present for longevity as well as artistry. In addition, he poses challenging questions for future research among the greater dance community. One hopes that from these seed thoughts and challenges will sprout more interest and activity in the realm of mature movement artists. Thank you, Mr. Nagrin, for your generous sharing of your "heart-mind" in your most-welcome addition to my dance library. (I would have given 5 stars had there been more ph! otos included.)
