Reptiles for the people.......2000-03-25
Generally field guides serve one purpose; to identify animals in the field. However it is a rare occurrence when one finds a field guide that is as useful to identify species as it is to educate. Bill Branch has written such a book about the reptiles of southern Africa. The author has provided informative sections on identifying and collecting reptiles, and on the vegetative habitats of southern Africa which determine the distributions of many species. In addition the book briefly covers the evolution and breeding biology of reptiles. The photographic plates are separate to the text and allow one to quickly scan the pages to identify the species of interest. The text section of each species covers distribution, breeding biology, taxonomy and interesting facts of relevance. Whether you are visiting southern Africa or a resident, this book will spur your interest in herpetology and allow you to identify reptiles with confidence.

Vivian FM Fitzsimmon's book may contain information which is now outdated but his work is thorough and encompasses all the species and data available at the time of publication. Included in the species accounts are distribution maps, biology and breeding, maximum recorded sizes and taxonomical origins of Genus and species. As a work it is as yet unsurpassed and remains the only comprehensively detailed volume on snakes of the Southern African sub-region.

Why isn't all of Languedoc-Roussillon here?.......2005-05-18
Michelin's guides are a five-star resource for travel information, from hotels and restaurants to attractions and how to get there. This guide is no exception, containing all the practical info you'd expect from Michelin, plus maps and some color pictures. The alphabetical listing of sites makes information easy to find. As you'd expect from a guide published by a tire company, the Michelin series seems best suited to car travel. I appreciate the star ratings of cities and attractions (1 star = "interesting", 3 starts = "highly recommended"), which help you determine whether a detour is warranted, or helps you meander your way through the countryside on a day of exploring.
I'm annoyed with this guide, however, because even though the title includes the names "Languedoc" and "Roussillon", it is NOT a guide to the entire French region known as Languedoc-Roussillon. Rather, it includes parts of Languedoc-Roussillon and parts of the adjacent region of Midi-Pyrenees. I bought it in preparation for a stay in Nimes, which is in the Gard department of Languedoc-Rousillon. Inexplicably, information about the Gard is found in the Michelin "Provence" guide, even though the Gard is not in fact part of Provence. So, if you're wanting to purchase a Michelin guide for information about a particular city or region, use the "Look Inside" feature to review the Table of Contents before you buy!

At first glance, this book looked exciting. However, once I started to (try to) read it, I found this book, itself, to be poorly designed. Emphasis seemed to be on slick, glossy pages rather than on content--unfortunate, because my initial appraisal had been, "Great! Full color examples". Sadly, it didn't live up to my expectations. There are better books out there. Over all, worth a glance but not a purchase unless you are just building a group library of information graphics books. I also agree with another reviewer who felt that some of the example designs were not very good.

Helpful, interesting, although not a classic in the same way that, say, Tufte's Envisioning Information is. For every piece of good design in this book, there's another piece which strikes me as quite bad (the Internet map sites in particular suffer from jumbled, cluttered, confusing interfaces). But this book is still a valuable resource for people interested in this kind of stuff.

An excellent book with lots of nice color photos and diagrams. Shows and talks about examples and solutions for informing travellers, explaining how things work, controlling input, interfacing with the screen, exploring the 3-d interface, and map systems.

This was an OK book...I planned to use it for altered books and art journals, and I'm afraid that the number of images (few) and the types of images (limited) kind of limit this book's usefulness. The thing I didn't like is, there are one, two, even three pages wit hthe same stuff on them. And it's not a bunch of little related images; it's a whole page out of some ancient book that doesn't look like it will lend itself very well to cutting and pasting this or that very particular image out of the whole scene.
If you're looking for many intricate images of the same thing (the human skeleton, for instance, or the mechanical plans of some old-fashioned machine) then this is for you. If you're looking for just 1 or 2 smaller images per topic but with many topics (like most of the other clip art books by this publisher) then you may not find this to be of much use to you.
A valuable resource.......2005-01-23
This book was a valuable resource when I designed a Biology-themed project. The images are well-rendered and the book scans well enough. The variety is good enough for the price, but for less desirable subjects such as fungi, ferns, and even some aspects of meteorology the depiction leaves something to be desired. However, (especially) for dicots, astronomy, anthropology, and ornithology, the drawings are superb.

I love this book!!!.......2002-10-04
This is the nicest cross-stich ornament book that I have ever seen. The designs are beautiful (and some of them just plain cute). The designs range from teddy bears to elegant victorian style snowflakes to a set of 5 nativity themed ornaments. I consider this book a keepsake and I enjoy making one ornament each year or so (the ornament are quite detailed and do take some time to make). I treasure this book and I am even getting a copy for my aunt who I am sure will absolutely love it!

C. Siegel's book of cross-stitch ornaments is a
delightful addition to the growing library of
volumes dedicated to stitchery. Though some
of her designs are rather uninteresting and
in general, her color choices are bland, overall,
she has created appealing projects. In addition,
she includes step-by-step instructions
for finishing projects, which I found
invaluable. I recommend this book to those
interested in producing attractive holiday

Its too bad this book is out of print! It is one of the most comprehensive collections of garden architecture and artifacts that I have seen. Over 1000 illustrations. The book draws on seven centuries of history and design from the great and lesser known gardens throughout the world. If you can find a copy of this book, buy it.

The Singing Line was the term given by Australia's Aborigines to the telegraph wire that, once slung across the continent, would open the world and permanently alter their lives. Writer Alice Thomson and her husband Ed follow the trail of the singing line while tracing the path of her great-great-grandparents, Charles and Alice Todd, the latter for whom Thomson was named. Flipping from the present to the mid-18th century in which her ancestors lived, this book offers both a glimpse of the heroic efforts of telegraph surveyors and the changes that these poles and wires wrought.
The tales of Alice Todd are sparse and of little consequence, however, since after arriving from England, the young bride never strays 30 miles from her home in Adelaide. It's her husband, Charles, who propels much of the book, as he oversaw the construction of the Australian telegraph in the 1850s, traveling--sometimes on camel--across desert, bush, and a no-man's-land where white men had never been, battling man-eating alligators, quicksand, monsoons, near-starvation, dehydration, and searing heat along the way.
At its best, The Singing Line is lively, funny, and filled with odd narrative snapshots of Aussies and their land. Like the stringing of the telegraph wire itself, though, this book can become a bit monotonous and fail to fully engage the reader. Ultimately, however, it does succeed in its task--and leaves one with an appreciation of struggles oft-forgotten in the age of modems and cellular phones. --Melissa Rossi

This was truly an amazing book. The author involves you in the very foundations that build up the Australian telegraph system - you become part of the history as she takes you through the life of her great-great-grandmother and grandfather. It reveals, once again, how many people gave up so much so that we can have a secure foundation in our society. Well worth owning.
Irritating.......2000-07-12
I bought this book because I am interested in the early explorers and travellers in to the Australian hinterland and because I was about to travel to some of the same areas the author had visited. I found the bits about Todd, the man who came to Australia to look at the stars and ended up connecting Australia to the outside world by a telegraph wire, quite interesting. Although I thought perhaps Alice Thomson was a bit confused as to whether the story was about Alice Todd (the great grandmother for whom she was named) or Charles Todd who laid the line. And I could see where she was coming from in trying to relate the story of her own travels with her husband in the same area and the Todds adventures. But again I'm not sure she pulled it off exactly. By exaggerating her own hardships, she underplayed the genuine difficulties the Todds endured and both stories lost credibility - for me, anyway. But what I really disliked about this book was its horrid comments about Australians and the way they live, in these so-called remote areas. She makes it sound as though one hour out of Adelaide she was alone in the world with people almost unrecognisable as human beings. Spare us the "don't come the raw prawn", "strewth cobber" cliches (which are always only used by the English, anyway). And I hope she feels ashamed at the way she treated people who went out of their way to help her, for a few cheap laughs. In great frustration (it was so nearly a good book) I eventually threw it on the campfire, unfinished, at Lake Eyre, halfway along the Singing Line.
Alice Thomson is Her Own Biggest Fan.......2000-04-26
I was fortunate enough to have the chance to live in Melbourne Australia for more than three years. I have experienced large parts of the journey Alice and her husband undertake in their quest to better understand her ancestor's experiences in creating the first telegraph line across Australia.
I found the book to be very Alice Thomson-centric. She seems to glorify all aspects of her journey while continually placing Charles Todd higher and higher upon his pedestal. I was hoping she would rekindle some of my own memories of the Australia outback. However, Ms. Thomson invariably spends paragraph after paragraph describing her husband's illness or her own tiny adventures driving the Land Cruiser or walking around Coober Pedy. Her descriptions of the local towns and environs is terse, quick, and dull. I do not recommend this book to anyone except Alice Thomson and her immediate family.
Regrettable.......2000-02-07
An interesting effort by a distant, if not vague relation to an historically insignificant figure, albeit one from whom myths form with their customary accuracy. What bits of research and experience are fairly presented are harmed, in my view to no benefit, by gratuitous asides regarding her apparently long-suffering companion, family and (soon to be former?) friends. One must wonder what would have been the book had the author not worked for a newspaper, which one might suspect arranged its serialization gratis. The photos beg for the book guillotine.
