My family also claims a mixed heritage (Afro-Euro-Native American). However, I have observed that many Black (as well as White) Americans emphasize their Native American bloodlines and ignore their respective White or Black bloodlines. In the case of Blacks this is because having "White" blood is sometimes attributable to the painful fact that White masters often exploited Black female slaves in ante bellum America. In the case of Whites I can only guess that admitting to having "Black" blood is less prestigious than being able to claim membership in a Native American tribe. I am by no means attempting to minimize any one's connection to Native America or the degree to which we are all bound to each other by blood or history. I am proud of this blended nation. However, we should acknowledge the joy and pain of all races in our common history. Simply, I wish that all Americans were as bositerous in acknowledging their respective Black/White, as well as Native, bloodlines. This might change the way we regard ourselves and each other in the present. Though not scholary, I think this book is worth the effort but romanticizes the relationship between Native Americans and Blacks....since many Native tribes in the east also had Black slaves.

Hypocrisy and Racism.......2004-08-13

Ironic, that an author who pays so much lip service to the evils of racism should write such prejudiced blather. Europeans in this book are eeeeeevil, greedy, lying, rapacious bigots. Blacks and Amerinds are noble, perfect, honorable, completely free of sexism, racism, etc. etc. etc. Add to that the ignorance he demonstrates with regard to Amerind tribes (and even how to spell US Marshal), and you have not only rank hypocrisy but slipshod scholarship. That non-Europeans have generally been slighted and ignored in 'mainstream' American history books is undeniable, but this book is worse than useless in rectifying that, burying nuggets of truth in an easily-dismissed slagpile of ignorance, rhetoric, and credulity.

What they don't teach in schools.......2004-04-06

I first came across this book while visiting FoxWoods. It was the cover and topic that caught my eye.

The book was not written to be scholarly work. It was written to tell a part of history that is not taught in schools. I was impressed the author was about to pull together such an amount of information. I would think that there would be very little record written about African Americans and Native Indians nowadays.

Overall the book is a good introduction. More work needs to be done to expand this topic / genre.

Simply written - an unscholarly work.......2003-06-13

Good topic - poorly written. Book is vague, covers many topics, although nothing is in depth. This book is probably good for middle school children and nothing more advanced.

Romantik presents classical romantic elements through outstanding examples of contemporary illustration, photography and graphic design. While making a clear reference to nineteenth century Romanticism, the book defines a current version of the term through its selections and presentation.

The book features examples expanding the forms of visual expression available in our computer-dominated world and develops style elements existing beyond the canon of forms used in the 1990s. In place of uncluttered surfaces and clean lines, colorful collages and ornaments are used to generate a feeling of warmth, closeness or commitment.

Since the computer is a creative tool, today's "Romantik" is pragmatic rather than dogmatic. At the same time, the book challenges the role of the computer in the design process, appealing to the romantic in all of us.

Awesome book. Good for inspiration. You will see the artwork like mixing between vector base and photoshop, photocopied art work, wonderful vector based images, mix-media; collage using drawing style and photoshop etc. If you find something different from things you've seen, you should buy this book!

Absolutely Beautiful!.......2004-09-24

Although the book was a little expensive, it contained very inspiring, "romantic" art. I especially enjoyed the collages and photo art. They are so artistic and different from anything else I've seen! (I suppose this review will be a little biased, seeing as this book is published in Germany and I'm obsessed with anything German ;).)

I highly recommend this book to artists, especially graphic designers, because all the art in this book have been completed on the computer.

The only thing I think this book can be improved on is if the artists are actually introduced in a better way, and every one of them can write something about their art. I understand this is a mostly art display book though. This is a book that you will treasure always and will want to look over and over again.

A Gorgeous Gift Book.......2002-05-18

This beautiful, 72 page book is a great gift for art lovers and Christians. Its introduction explains Rembrandt's possible inspiration and some details for each work. The text of the KJV Bible gives the book a devotional quality. Both text and art make for good meditation during a busy Christmas season. My favorite is the drawing on the book's cover, shown in full on page 27. It's a tender portrait of Mary and Jesus, possibly modeled by Rembrandt's wife and first child. I think knowing that the child died after two months makes this drawing all the more poignant to me. Jesus, God Almighty incarnate as a human, was just as frail as Rembrandt's first born.

Beautiful marriage of art and scripture.......2000-08-25

This volume is a wonderful marriage of art by Rembrant and text from the Gospel infancy narratives. Thus the book revolves around well known episodes: the annunciation, Mary's visit to Elizabeth, the birth of John the Baptist, the birth of Jesus, the angel appearing to the shepherds ... etc. Some of the texts have multiple paintings and etchings associated with them; this has the effect of allowing the art more than the word to tell the story. This is an excellent book for anyone interested in religious or biblical art.

Why so small?.......1998-12-25

The pictures of this book are very good and the text fits well, however, having copies of the other two books in this series, "The Life Of Christ" and "The Old Testament", I was a bit dissapointed with the size of this book. The publishers seem to be attempting one of those "gift" books and in doing this they do a great disservice to the artist.

Superficial and disappointing.......2006-08-31

The author has at least seven other books in a series of growing various vegetables. This book has the feeling of something written to spec without great depth or passion. Much of the information is generic, and the author and the book could have benefited from a bit more effort and research. There is needless lack of precision. The book is certainly of some use, but it could have and should have been better.

This volume sheds fresh light upon the phenomenon of narrative doubling in the Hebrew Bible. Through an innovative interdisciplinary model the author defines the notion of narrative analogy in relation to other literatures where it has been studied such as English Renaissance drama and makes extensive critical use of contemporary literary theory, particularly that of the Russian formalist Vladimir Propp. His exploitation of narrative doubling, with a focus upon the metaphorical, reorients our reading by uncovering a major dynamic in biblical literature.

The author examines several battle reports and demonstrates how each could be interpreted as an oblique commentary and metaphor for the non-battle account that immediately precedes it. Battle scenes are revealed to stand in metaphoric analogy with, among others, accounts of a trial, a rape, a drinking feast, and a court-deliberation.

Joshua Berman offers new insights to the ever-growing concern with the relationship between historiography and literary strategies, and succeeds in articulating a new aspect of biblical ideology concerning human and divine relationship.
