Australia is home to a rich and unique fauna, but few Australian animals are as intriguing as the monitor lizard. Their abundance and bold behavior have made them a familiar favorite with generations of Australian bush walkers, campers, and even picnickers. In an easy-to-read style,Monitors covers the fascinating natural history of these ancient animals, which includes the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon. This book is an update of the successful 1993 Australian Natural History Series title, Goanna. Since the publication of the first edition, many major studies have been undertaken on Australian, Asian, and African species of monitors (goannas) and much fascinating new information regarding varanid lizards has emerged. For instance, research on Varanus albigularis has revealed that they can count, while work on Varanus salvator shows that they swim in the ocean when not searching for food. These findings plus other new information in areas as diverse as taxonomy, diet, breeding behavior, and energetics have been incorporated into this text. Two new additions are a chapter on parasites of varanids and a section on foraging strategy.

This book introduice in a very simple way the biology of varanid. This study is mainly focus on australian species but biologist can do the link with others species from Asia or Africa. I recommand this book at everybody who have biological basis as student, herpetologist, teacher,...

good, but not great.......2006-07-21

focuses almost exclusively on V. rosenbergi studies and little else on other species of varanus. has some good general data on preferred temperature ranges, metabolic rates, and other data related to scientific studies of varanids but misses the mark that most people who purchase these books are herpetoculturists/hobbyists. They want to know data on all species related to diet, humidity, habitat, etc to create a functional environment for their kept species. for that, i give it 3 stars out of 5. it misses the mark for hobbyists.

Great resource on varanids.......2004-07-22

I will state right now that this book is not, IMHO, an easy read, or a particularly fluid read.
However, it is very informative, containing much information about the natural habits and ecology of varanid lizards. My main complaint is that the book seems to use V. rosenbergi as it's archetypal varanid; there are some 9 sub genera and several dozen species, and I wish that more attention had been payed to the some of the other varanids. However, this is still one of the few good monitor books that's actually in print, and is worth your read weather you're an academic herpetologist or a keeper (or for that matter if you are thinking about keeping a monitor). It provides insights that are sorely lacking in most other (in print) books, espically in regards to the thermal biology, water useage, and the diet of these lizards. It's easily worth your effort to read it.
The discussions about taxonomy are also great, and informative in regards to how gene sequencing is being used to establish relationships and derivations between species.

This was a great companion to our (my husband & I) tour of the Alsace reagion of France which is worth the trip! It is a beautiful not-well traveled region of France. We visited this French/German area on a trip where we visited Mont Blanc and the French Riveria as well. We were greeted with only friendliness from the wineries and other French people that we met on our visit to Alsace.

Quick, accessible, interesting & well illustrated.......2006-11-19

We just found this book at our local library, and being as I had now and then heard that the Longfellow story was inaccurate, but that there was a real Hiawatha, I checked it out right away. It's a short book, under 50 pages, and filled with illustrations, so it is a fast read. There are no pronunciation keys for the Indian names, but aside from the long name of the Creator, I was able to make what I felt was a decent attempt when I read the book aloud to my kids. The illustrations are terrific... ranging from a photograph of Longfellow, to period paintings of Native American activities, to detailed drawings of longhouses and at least one photograph of an artefact, to paintings by living artists. And of course illustrations make the text more interesting to adults as well as children.

The real Hiawatha was an Iroquois man (from the region that is now New York State). The Iroquois lived in longhouses, and they called themselves the Haudenosaunee, the People of the Longhouses. We are not sure when he lived, somewhere before the time of Columbus anyway. When Hiawatha was young, the Iroquois were split into five nations, and there was always fighting, as each time someone was killed it would be necessary to kill someone in retaliation, and of course that never ends. Hiawatha, along with a Huron (a man from another people related to the Haudenosaunee) named Degandawida, worked to bring the Iroquois together into one people, stop the retaliatory killings, and create a set of laws and a nation which were, to many historians, the model used by the American Founding Fathers to create our Constitution and government.

Of course, I tell it poorly, and I don't have any pictures in my review, but I couldn't let this wonderful book sit on amazon with no reviews!

Because design is all around us, it often goes unnoticed unless it's strikingly awful--as in the case of an uncomfortable chair or a pen that's too large to hold correctly. Conversely, great design is commonly overlooked because it performs so well--the perfect typeface or an ever-present logo, for example. A visual treat.......2000-04-16

In my view, World Design is a rather subjective title to the book when most of the items discussed here are from Western countries, mainly powerhouse countries such as Italy, France, UK, Germany. Most of the modern classics are in here & most of the daily items that we have taken for granted are here too. Again, designers that are chosen to be included in this encyclopedia is subjective considering that there are other designers that failed to be mentioned such as the highly acclaimed late John Britten, a New Zealander who has designed & built an organic shaped motorbike using carbon fibre with many technological advances. What about the designers who designed the Jaguar E Type, Lotus Elise which uses the aluminium spaceframe which saves the weight of the car & not compromising the safety of the passengers, Benz SLK with its ability to be transformed from a convertible to a coupe in a matter of second, & what about Karem Rashid whose salt & pepper shakers have been rendered as a classics since? The list could go on but having said that, this book manages to inform the readers of those committed designers that designed items for the people, by the people. This book is by no mean a definite book for design because as we speak, more new designer pieces are coming to the market place, and designer pieces being evolved to meet the changes of our requirements.

Promises more than it delivers (tant pis).......2000-01-15

Right off the bat, the infuriating things (I'll get to the kudos in a moment):

1. Frequently and throughout, a work will be cited in the body text as significant in a designers' evolution and then *not illustrated*, whereas the works illustrated tend to be minor or tangential. You have no idea how annoying it is to read that Sir Norman Foster's lighting system for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank (or George Nelson's Storagewall, or *most* of Ross Lovegrove's oeuvre, and so on...) was "revolutionary," and then not get to see it, or what was so revolutionary about it.

2. The book misses obvious, multifaceted rising talents like Karim Rashid, while devoting overmuch space to, say, Jamie Reid (much as I love his Sex Pistols work).

3. Some of the facts are just *wrong*. The font cited as OCR-B is, I believe, OCR-A, for just one example.

4. The text has either been translated poorly or written in English by someone with imperfect command of English idiom. This is OK in a Kartell catalogue, but not in a book intended for a mass English-speaking audience. It's clumsy, verging on contemptful (i.e., "They'll be so busy looking at the pretty pictures they won't notice the text.")

All that said, this is a beautiful and useful book. It has enhanced my sense of the evolution and internationality of modern design, shed some (though not very much) light onto the personalities and motivations of individual designers, blown me away in places (Noguchi's Nurse radio!) and provided a valuable transitional reference for me at work, where I must among other things describe design products in depth on a daily basis. I *really* liked the equal respect given to categories like fashion and typography, or designers like Coco Chanel who are not usually thought of as such, or as so influential. And the timeline at the end of the book is especially interesting. This would make a great gift for anyone interested in industrial design, fashion, graphics, or even branding/marketing. Let's hope the next edition is even better.

The format of the book (length of descriptions and size of pictures) was well suited to the presentation of these beautiful yet sometimes familiar works of design. There was a focus on environmental and industrial products. I would have loved to view more examples of graphic art, but they did cover the important figures in that category such as David Carson and Paul Rand.

a pocket guide to Keeshonden.......2001-05-27

The breed is not popular with Hollywood, so the selection of books are a rare find. This book is a good no-nonsense guide to Keeshonden. It includes basic information starting with the history of the breed, along with the CORRECT pronounciation of this name: Kayz-hawnd,(not keys-hound!), the behavior, caring for, traveling with, nutrition, diet, medical care, training, grooming, and raising Keeshonden (stud/bitch care). I particularly liked the extent the author took in writing a well written chapter on Before Buying a Keeshond. He went into whether the Keeshond is right for you? puppies vs dogs, male/ female, and pet or show quality. The end of the chapter went into the Keeshond with children, family, older people, and other animals. Included within the book there is clear photos of the dog, in reference to the point of the chapter. Examples of these would be the different colorations of the breed, puppies, grooming tasks, and training methods. Other black and white sketches were included for the reproductive track, medical care, picking up a puppy, and candid sketches. The Keeshonden pet manual is about 75 pages long, but was one of the better purchases for obtaining information on the breed. Rec. for further reading: the New Complete Keeshond, a textbook of information on the Keeshonden worldwide.

Great book for those who want to know more about Keeshonden!.......1999-06-04

Carol and Ron Cash have done a wonderful job of presenting the updated history of the Keeshonden around the world. The great instructions and photographs on how to take care of your Keeshond are a joy to read. It is no wonder that Ron has won several Dog Writer Awards. The sections on Showing and Obedience training give a good view into these worlds with clear explanations of terms and process. This book is a wonderful addition to any Keeshond fancier's library.

Excellent, informative Keeshond book!.......1998-06-11

Ron and Carol Cash have put together an outstanding book on Keeshonds where the last book (The Complete Keeshond) left off. The book is put together in a logical format, and is easy to follow and retain the information as it is presented. I enjoyed reading about the origins, and then how the Keeshond breed spread worldwide. The book then details information about breeders in various parts of the US and Canada as well as Europe, Africa and Australia. This book is not a basic puppy book, its for those who already know what they want and where they are going to get it. The Cash's have done an outstanding job of presenting the Keeshond to the world through this work.

I will never regret owning this 250 page wonderful older book! There are dozens of B&W photos. First there are fascinating Kees-in-art and history pictures and then many individual and group shots of dogs and puppies.There are even "major fault"(referring to show dogs) detail pictures and a diagrammmed "ideal" show-dog!The text is thorough too. I'm sure newer editions have revised some of this book but I'd recommend Any edition you can afford to a Keeshond owner!

The DEFINITIVE book on Keeshonden!.......1999-09-14

Clementine Peterson does an excellent job of chronicling the Keeshond. This book has information on the early years of Keeshonden, and is truly a great reference work.

Extremely Helpful Primer, Full of Ideas.......2000-11-20

A gift from a mother to her newbie gardener son, this is the best text I've sampled so far on container gardening how-to. It's essentially an ornate lesson planner slash visual catalog. Being overwhelmed by the variety of choices available to a novice, this book takes the direction of showing you the authors own display ideas, along w/ information on number of plants needed, initial planting steps, container size information, and how large the display will get. Granted, my choices are a bit light starting my garden in the winter chapter, I'm still very enthusiastic about recreating some of his pieces: minty evergreens and red winter berries. The large, glossy, full color photos effectively help to give an idea of size, scope, and often texture of the displays, as they contrast their containers. As mentioned in another review, his eye for color, and his knack for matching the pots to their plants are very impressive. The printing I have is from 1995; perhaps the 1998 version has added a few new items. I found this an excellent primer for the beginner.

Best container gardening book I've ever seen. The way the Author uses colors can be reapplied not only to containers but also in your backyard. The way the author classifies the book into seasons are also enjoyable.

Mr. Hillier revealed an entirely new aspect of gardening to me. His container plantings are works of art, and his creativity in the varied containers,locations and plantings is wonderful. For example, he makes a simple group of cream- colored pansies in terra cotta pots on a brick window ledge look fantastic. His work can be imitated or it can inspire new combinations if one does not have access to the diverse types of plants he uses. I savored this book over the winter, and my garden is much enhanced this summer!
