    Book Description

Haematology of Australian Mammals is a valuable guide to collecting and analysing the blood of Australian mammals for haematological studies and diagnosis and monitoring of disease.

It outlines general principles for selecting sites for blood collection and for handling and analysing samples to achieve quality results. Chapters then describe the morphology and function of haematological cells, with reference to the known characteristics of Australian mammals in health and the changes that may be encountered in response to common diseases. Haemoparasites that have been encountered in Australian mammals are discussed next, along with comments on their pathogenicity. Lastly, haematological values from previously published studies are compiled into species-specific tables, providing a convenient reference to compare to the results of clinical cases.

Written descriptions and colour photomicrographs of haematological cells from more than 100 species aid the identification of cells and the detection of abnormalities. Information is provided throughout for representative species from all the major groups of native Australian mammals including monotremes, polyprotodont marsupials, diprotodont marsupials, rats and mice, bats and marine mammals.

2 out of 5 stars Up the Danube without a Paddle.......2005-09-01

I packed two guidebooks for my trip to Vienna: this one, and an ancient Michelin Green Guide to Austria that devoted about 20 pages to Vienna. I found the latter more useful, even though much of the information was frozen in a long-forgotten 1978.

It's difficult to look up specific information in this guide, and, once found, it's sometimes misleading. "The regal rooms of Schloss Schonbrunn are in a league of their own in Vienna - the Kaiser apartments of the Hofburg hardly come close." Perhaps. But the Schonbrunn was so packed with tour groups that I ran through the forty rooms that are open for viewing as quickly as possible just to get out of the place. By contrast, a visit to the Hofburg included a moving exhibit on the wife of the emperor Franz Joseph; for me, this humanized the rooms and added a depth that the mere viewing of endless amounts of gold leaf could not.

The typeface of this book is too small and faint, and the maps are unreadable. A reference for the Albertina is given as `Map pp.240-3.' Turning to page 240, I found tiny dots with tiny numbers going up to 351, but no dot with a 3. After much searching of page 240, I found the 3 on an inset map on page 241. This is inexcusable in a guidebook.

Vienna is too wonderful to entrust to this guide. Friends who carried the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Vienna at least had a book that was readable.

2 out of 5 stars New format messes up a classic.......2004-11-15

I've long been a Lonely Planet fan, never thinking twice about buying the appropriate Lonely Planet book whenever I travel. However, the new format and emphasis of the LP guides has made me re-think my commitment.

Specifically, the "Fact for the Visitor" section has been greatly reduced, and moved under the confusingly titled "Directory" section. Unfortunately, this is difficult to locate because the Table of Contents has been bowdlerized from the former detailed breakdown into a simple section listing. If you want to find a specific piece of information, you now have to guess which section it might be hiding in (as in "Directory" -- which is almost nothing like a directory), then flip the to beginning of that section for the more detailed contents.

The new, less coherent, structure is frustrating enough, but when you get each section, you find it very hard to read. One of the first things that you learn about graphic design and publishing is that sans serif typefaces are difficult to read for long passages and should only be used sparingly. The new guides have turned this on its head, and now very light sans serif faces are used almost everywhere (contrast this with earlier editions where sans serif is only used for headings). I find it difficult to read for more than a few paragraphs, which is very annoying.

Being able to locate, and read the information are the two most fundamental things a guidebook needs to have, and these new editions really fail.

Which raises the biggest problem of all -- LP seems to be changing its emphasis from a guide which provided lots of useful information to the budget traveler as well as the higher end independent traveler. The new guide really de-emphasizes the budget traveler, in favor of being a generic, middle of the road guide. Which, from someone who looks to get the most from his travel dollar, is extremely disappointing. In contrast with my second edition copy of this guide, the fourth edition lists half as many budget accommodations, and twice as many mid-range to expensive ones.

On the plus side, the maps *finally* include a grid, making it much easier to find locations on them.

On the whole though, LP has taken the guides I've loved for years, and made them much less valuable to me. In the future, I'll be shopping around for guides, instead of knowing that I can trust LP without a second thought.

    4 out of 5 stars Incredibly helpful.......2002-01-06

The fancy of going to Vienna next summer crossed my mind more than once so I decided to pick this up just to get some more information on the City of Music. It's a very concise book that can be easily toted around in a bag or pocket, which I immediately liked because should I go I would want to keep it on hand. I liked the layout for places to stay, going from campgrounds to hostels, to the hotels, going from one star to five. It has a great listing for restaurants and has the city pretty much covered in respects to places to visit and a calendar of events, which makes planning a trip a lot easier. The history was a nice added bonus for someone not knowing about the city, as well as historical people that spent time/grew up in Vienna (ie: Mozart). Colour photos and things such as political mindset, attitude towards children, the legal system are nice touches as well. However, take the prices with a grain of salt, especially with the new introduction of the Euro.

5 out of 5 stars A handy guide to more than just the tourist sites.......2000-06-13

The 2nd edition of Lonely Planet's guide to Vienna is a welcome edition to the guidebooks on the Austrian capital. Of course it contains the usual information: how to get there, how to get around, and what there is to see. But this book also tells the reader about other important facts such as the climate, history, government/politics, bicycling, and farily current email and web addresses. The Lonely Planet guide also has lots of interesting tidbits of information that most of the more staid guides do not, such as info on Lauda Air, gay Vienna, The Third Man (movie), and Viennese actionism. The maps are excellent, and prices (as of 1998) are listed for most attractions. I doubt that a more versatile guide exists.

      Book Description

Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was one of the most fascinating figures of the late 18th century. His public antagonist and personal friend John Adams believed that their times would come to be known as the "Age of Paine." He came to America in middle age and became a radical-democratic pamphleteer, effectively turning colonial rebellion into a national liberation movement. He later returned to Europe where he played a prominent role in both the French Revolution and the cause of English radicalism. Paine is best remembered for his books: the controversial The Rights of Man and his book on the American Revolution, Common Sense. Harvey J. Kaye, well-known for his studies on Paine and his period, traces the English revolutionary's life and details his political writings in accessible, highly readable narrative that also covers important events of early American history. Oxford Portraits is a new series of biographies for young adults. Written by prominent writers and historians, each of these titles is designed to supplement the core texts of the middle and high school curriculum with intriguing, thoroughly informative and insightful accounts of the lives and work of the notable men and women who helped shape history. Each book is illustrated with numerous graphics, photographs, and documents. A unique feature is the inclusion of sidebars containing primary source material, mostly excerpts from the subject's writings. A chronology, further reading list, and index rounds out every volume.

4 out of 5 stars Defending A Profession Just Got Easier.......2000-09-20

Defending graphic design as a full fledged profession just got a little easier thanks to the continuing efforts of Steven Heller. An ambitious writer whose work is having a monumental effect on the formation of graphic design into a definable profession, Heller continues in this vain as editor of a broad collection of recent articles from the AIGA Journal.

The selection of writings in Design Culture cuts a broad path , touching on corporate identity, design as culture and design education. If you are practicing graphic designer who is beginning to feel unsure about the direction your work is taking, take a break and read a few selections from this book - it will remind you of why you entered the profession in the first place. If you are an educator in the field of graphic design, Heller's compilation provides ample sources for use in spurring debate in the studio environment. And if you are a design student you must buy it! Failure to read this collection during your first year in school may permanently skew your view of the profession. Desktop publishing vs. graphic design - there is a difference and Design Culture will give you insight into what is it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice coffee-table book for horse enthusiasts........2004-02-20

If you are at all familiar with equine photography, you will no doubt have heard of Denver Bryan. His photographs grace numerous magazines, calendars, and books. This is a fine collection of his work, showing the many sides of horses and celebrating the equine spirit. The book is divided in to four sections - Portraits (showing horses at rest and play), Living With Horses (showing the interactions between horses, humans, and other animals), Working Horses (showing ranch and pack horses at work), and The Competitive Horse (showing both English and Western showhorses, racehorses, and rodeo horses). The full-color photographs are large, clear, and attractive. Some capture a special moment, an emotion, or sometimes simply a priceless facial expression.

I was a little less impressed with the text of the book. Interspersed among the photographs are short blurbs that read somewhat like flowery poetry and seem a bit superflous. However, the central element of the book is the photography, and the text does not detract from it or overpower it. I was, however, diappointed to see "Palominos" touted as a breed in the Introduction. This is a common error and I always shake my head when I see it perpetuated. Palomino is just a color - one which is found in numerous breeds - and not a breed in and of itself. But this is a small quibble and I won't get carried away. The book is, on the whole, very nice. It should do well as a coffee-table type book, and many of the pictures would make good artistic inspiration and reference material. This is a great idea either as a gift or a treat for yourself.

3 out of 5 stars What a wonderful celebration of the horse!.......1999-11-02

This is a beautiful book for anyone who loves the majesty and grace of the horse. The photos are wonderful! Another one of my favorites is a training book called Horse, Follow Closely by GaWaNi Pony Boy. Check them both out!!

5 out of 5 stars quality photographs with wonderful captions.......1999-06-01

Any horse lover with adore this book. The photos are extreemely high quality and capture the true essence of the horse. The wonderful, but not overpowering, write-ups only add to the overall appeal of this book. It is well worth the money because you will look at it over and over-a great buy!

      4 out of 5 stars A cool book, but..........2006-12-09

I have Mitch Frumkin's first two books, and I must admit this one is better, picture wise. His first two contained just b&w photos and not much text. This book is wall to wall color, which really brings the ads to life; some ads are even reproduced in their original size. Very cool - A+ on that account. However, this book contains much more text, which should have been a nice compliment to the ads, but unfortunately, there are a number of errors. Yes, I realize that one person cannot possibly know every little detail, and we are constantly finding out new facts about muscle cars, but if you have the ads in front of you, and hopefully the magazines they came out of, you should know the correct years of the cars and the dates the ads ran. In other words, model year 1971 cars were not advertised in late 1969.

Also, I feel a number of historic ads were left out in this publication that should have been included. For example, there were several ads that were pulled by the manufacturers almost immediately after they ran, because they were considered too contraversial. None of these are here. Maybe Mitch wanted to offer the public some fresh material. The problem here is, his first two books are out of print. Quality used copies are going for good money and are becoming hard to find.

Aside from those two nick-picky points, overall, it is a cool book. Would make a great gift. Buy a really nice used copy, you won't be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Trip.......2005-03-05

I was impressed by Muscle Car Mania and Son of Muscle Car Mania but Mitch came up trumps this time as we benefit from colour print - the best way to see the psycadelic Plymouth ads of the 60's. If you like muscle cars buy this book.

        Book Description

First sketched by Gebbie Drayton in 1904, the Campbell Kids have endured for decades, in everything from streetcar ads and magazine layouts to dolls and animated commercials. The rosy-cheeked, cherub-faced youngsters have grown with America, reflecting its cultural shifts and expressing its ideals and aspirations. Charmingly innocent, plucky, and playful, they struck poses as Rosie the Riveter during World War II and flower children wearing tie-dye and holding peace signs in the 1960s. They have promoted the Red Cross, inspired Americans to buy war bonds and conserve electricity, and even promoted children's self-esteem.

In the process, the Campbell Kids became more than a trademark of Campbell's Soup; they became true American icons, embodying goodness and wholesome living. As the famous kids celebrate their 100th birthday, collectors of memorabilia and Americana will delight in this decade-by-decade trip through the lives of the Campbell Kids, the company they represented, and the country they came to symbolize. AUTHOR BIO: Aric Chen is a freelance writer in New York whose work has appeared in The New York Times, New York magazine, GQ, Elle, House & Garden, and the book American Dream: The Houses at Sagaponac.

4 out of 5 stars New to collecting? This will help........2000-09-23

Vastly illustrated and very informative. Although the majority of this book is pictures (very nice ones at that), there are some very interesting facts and historical information about the victorian card craze. Because there are in excess of 100,000 different cards in existance, don't expect to find every card in here or the current market price. It is just a matter of time before a more extensive guide is published, (I would still recommend because of the great illustrations!) The only problem I have with this book is the layout which can be annoying if you are trying to find info on one of your cards. You have to search through several sections of the book. (e.g. Jackson's chewing tobbaco card in the "Exploration and Travel" chapter instead of the "Tobbaco" chapter). More expensive cards are usually only discussed in the chapter rather than illustrated, which I find kind of strange(Maybe he didn't own any of those to get the photo?).

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Trade Card Collector's Reference !.......2000-08-15

The beautiful 224 page, 8 1/2 x 11" softbound book contains more than 500 full color, sharp, large photos. '98 values. There are 70 topics ranging from angels, baseball, dolls, expositions to Uncle Sam, women, wringers and washing. There's plenty of background information on each topic. A useful glossary of terms is provided. A must for tradecard collectors. Fascinating to read and refer to.

5 out of 5 stars Lavishly illustrated, marvelous reference..........2000-03-26

This is a great book. It's a definitive reference on the somewhat obscure subject of Victorian Trade Cards, but for those of us who love them, it's a feast. It is crammed with illustrations, broken into categories, and contains history and collecting tips. The pricing information is somewhat out of date, due to the impact that online auctions have had on these collectables (some are more expensive, some less, as auctions make them more available.) If you're at all a fan of this genre, don't hesitate to buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars An endlessly fascinating book in its subject area.......1997-02-08

If you find this book lying on someone's coffee table, don't pick it up--you'll be hooked! I am not an aficionado of trade cards, but I found this book to be endlessly fascinating. Cheadle wisely keeps his writing to a minimum, letting the illustrations speak for themselves-- page after page. I know of no book that is more intriguing just to page through. 5 out of 5 stars Essential Guide for Old Paper Collectors.......2006-03-06

This was clearly a labor of love for co-authors Martinus and Rinker. Their mini-guide to ephemera collecting in the front of the book is more than worth the cost of the book. It is a joy to read. It provides anyone interested in collecting ephemera will an outstanding overview of the field.

Although the prices listed in the guide are now outdated, the book remains a useful reference for any serious collector of ephemera. This important reference deserves a place on any old paper collector's bookshelf.

It would be wonderful to see a revised edition of this guide with current prices.

Nice pictures, and descriptions of many Maples. It may be lacking installation and propagation details. There are many good descriptions and may be adequate for most novices, they show the differences in the cultivars of a good sampling of maples, including the Hybridized, Japanese,Korean and Chinese maples. I have enjoyed the book yet there is much room for improvement, but that book would cost seventy to one hundred dollar plus. You get what you pay for most of the time and you do get what you for here as well. One book can not cover the topic in all its fascists, there are to many different point of view, qualifications, biases and specific interest all play a key roll in the author's compilation of the book and can she/he write and can she plant a tree with success or is she just faking us out and spiting out a book on contract .

                5 out of 5 stars Maple Mania.......2001-08-15

This book is a must for anyone with a thirst for deeper knowledge of trees. James Harris' book describes the botany and world distribution of the massive genus Acer clearly and concisely. For identification of individual sub-species, the photographs and line drawings show amazing detail of bark, seed and leaf. The section, A-Z of species, deals with each Acer in sufficient and useful detail. Not only is the book an excellent reference for botanists/arborists, but also for the keen gardener, as the sections on cultivation and planting are highly informative. Personally, as a Bonsai enthusiast, I have found the book invaluable in researching a particular species of tree.

3 out of 5 stars A small, yet great maple "dictionary".......2001-03-30

Of the maple books I have seen and viewed, this has been the cheapest and the most informational for its size. The book contains information, not only on Acer palmatum, but on all trees of this genus. It provides lots of good and useful general information on the care, propagation, and classification. It provides many pages of color photos of the many maples that are described in detail in the book. For me, this book helped me decide exactly which maple tree was to my taste and perfect for my gardern. So interested in maples? Get this book!

                        Book Description

In 1999 the Maryinsky (formerly Kirov) Ballet and Theater in St. Petersburg re-created its 1890 production of Sleeping Beauty. The revival showed the classic work in its original sets and costumes and restored pantomime and choreography that had been eliminated over the past century. Nevertheless, the work proved unexpectedly controversial, with many Russian dance professionals and historians denouncing it. In order to understand how a historically informed performance could be ridiculed by those responsible for writing the history of Russian and Soviet ballet, Tim Scholl traces the history of Sleeping Beauty and discusses the tradition, ideology, and popular legend that have shaped its development. In the process he provides a history of Russian and Soviet ballet during the twentieth century. A fascinating slice of cultural history, the book will appeal not only to dance historians but also to those interested in the arts and cultural policies of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.
