Important Historical Book.......2002-03-01

For people who love horses this book is a precious document carefully complied by the authors. It preserves a collection of photographs of workhorses from about 1890-the mid 1970s. The book is more than just a static display. The accompanying text makes the pictures into meaningful illustrations of life when humans and horses weere everyday partners. - KLE

These authors have made this a thoroughly enjoyable book for people who love horses, lovers of history, and those of us who drive horses. Their little touches really make this a personal book. They notice the little things, and point them out to the reader so you too can enjoy them. For example, the horse's mane being braided up but the wagon was muddy... I have been driving for over 20 years, and my friends include people with draft horses. We, as horse owners, really enjoyed the fact that the authors know what they are talking about. And they shared so much, like talking about the fire house team of horses that when the alarm rang.... Little tidbits they added about particular horses, owners, or pointing out something in particular about a certain harness made it so enjoyable to read. This is just plain good reading for just about anyone.

This book is extremely comprehensive and informative. It covers all of the basics and gives great advice about water gardens. James Allison provides a wide varitey of examples for people of all skill levels. I will be building a water garden this summer, and this book has greatly aided me in planning my project.

In a coffee-table book that will likely take up half the table, Maria Sironi Diemberger gathers some of the most fabulous photographs of Tibet into an encyclopedic collection. Unlike many books of this kind, the text accompanying the illustrations is more than just explanatory filler. Geologist and humanitarian Sironi Diemberger is intimate with her subject. The opening chapter contains not only the best succinct history of Tibet you may find but petroglyphs, paintings, maps, and frescoes from Tibet, China, and Europe, as well as early photographs from the likes of Heinrich Harrer. Satellite photos orient you to the lay of the land, and for the rest of the book, there are gorgeous vistas of indigo lakes, looming peaks, emerald grasses, and crystal snows. Candid shots of monks, bird's eye views of prostrating pilgrims, comparison photos of monasteries before and after the Cultural Revolution make for more than just idle viewing. Sironi Diemberger's text is packed with both information and light and with personal journal entries. A caption that in another book might read, "Ornaments at Tashilhunpo Monastery" here reads: "The monastery of Tashilhunpo at Shigatse was founded in 1447 by a disciple of Tsongkhapa. Mystical Tibet - The roof of the World.......2001-01-02

I purchased this book near the Assan in Kathmandu after I had just returned from a wonderful holiday to Tibet very recently and lugged all the way home to South Africa. This book is very special, lovingly put together by the author who obviously knows this country very well. The abundant colour photographs contained in the book are superb and very indicative of the real Tibet as can be seen by us Western Travellers. The text enhances the photographs and puts into words what the photos cannot tell. A wonderful coffee table book which will lead to many hours of discussion amongst friends.

This book must be the second best thing to visiting Tibet, the roof of the World, as a tourist. If you have had the privilege to have been exposed to "the lure of Tibet" it brings back many memories in a superb manner - both through photographs and words, if you have not been so lucky as to have been able to visit it - this book is certainly the second best thing.

Definitiely to be recommended!!

Great start to learning about retail.......2006-12-20

Target is one of the most popular retailers today and Rowley recounts their development from a Minnesota store to cross country superstar. This book is best read in conjunction with Sam Walton's made in America. Although it is fairly agreed upon today that Wal-Mart and Target do not compete with each other they did initially and the difference between the two is instructive. Target uses wider aisles as well as bigger floor space. Their selection is meant to be higher end and there goal was to capture middle class discounters. The stores development is well written and Rowley adds some of the fun stories along the way. This is a great book for those interested in retail and a very quick and fun read.

Who'd-A-Thunk It?.......2005-05-14

Being from Michigan, I used to have a sort kin'ship with Target, and it's family of stores. Hudsons was the LAST of the real department stores, and although I'm not sure I ever shoped there, I still remember THE Hudson's store in Detroit. And who could for get the Hudson's Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade? So when I found this book in a discount bin I though... Why not? What I didn't realize is how wide ranging and insightful the company is. As your reading the book, you find you self saying over and over again.... "WOW.. I never realized that that was what I like about Target" For example, ever notice there's no music playing overhead? Me either, and till it was pointed out. If you have a background or even an interest in retail, marketing, or corprate structure this book is a must. If all that stuff bores you, and you just love to shop... well... then it's still a great book.

Designer discount.......2004-11-22

Walmart officially gets credit for being America's most profitable retailer, but I am convinced this honor should go to Target.

Upper management at the company realized that people wanted to look chic without paying designer prices--and somehow convinced 'big names' to go along with them. What seems like a given was obviously (and still is) radical because Kmart had basically sunk itself into oblivion with insistence on circa 1980 marketing, and Walmart is where you would go for perishable goods. 'Good clothes' instantly makes me think of Target.

The commercials for this chain are very attractive, working in the store logo with young and trendy op art imagery. Wanting to save money can be both fun and hip only if you are shopping at the Target store. People not realizing that Target was a discount merchandiser could honestly believe they were being asked to shop at an exclusive botique. This was entirely the point of their advertising strategy.

The reading for this book is not particularly insightful (being written by one of Target's concept makers), but can provide some thought. Business success depends on the ability to carve out a niche.

As a 24-plus year team member with Target Stores I was skeptical in reading a book about a company that I know everything about, or so I thought. I was pleasantly suprised at Laura Rowley's "On Target." As an insider, I found the book to be accurate and balanced. Rowley gives a detailed account of the rich family history behind the Bulls-eye as well as examining Target's operations. "On Target" explores Target's advertsing strategies, service and technology, guidelines for growth, and looks ahead at some of the challenges the company faces. In addition, Rowley peeks into the philanthropic side of Target, exposes Target's artistic character, and reveals what separates Target from its competitors. "On Target" is well-written, easy to read, and hits the mark.

This study presents a full account of Sheppard’s employment under Oliver Cromwell’s Protectorate as well as an examination of his family background and education, his religious commitment to John Owen’s party of Independents and his legal philosophy. An appraisal of all Sheppard’s legal works, including those written during the Civil War and the Restoration period, illustrates the overlapping concerns with law reform, religion and politics in his generation. Sheppard had impressively consistent goals for the reform of English law and his prescient proposals anticipate the reforms ultimately adopted in the nineteenth century, culminating in the Judicature Acts of 1875–8. Dr Matthews examines the relative importance of Sheppard’s books to his generation and to legal literature in general. The study provides a full bibliography of Sheppard’s legal and religious works and an appendix of the sources Sheppard used in the composition of his books on the law.
