4 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for.......2007-03-29

I wish this guide had colorful maps. I originally bought it looking for information about hiking and trekking activities in the Parks and was somewhat disappointed by the monochromatic maps with poor information about trail distance or duration.

4 out of 5 stars Well-organized, succinct and useful. Not comprehensive........2005-12-31

This guide is very succinct, affordable, and accessible. It's not at all comprehensive, yet is still one of the most useful guides to the region due to its brevity and organziation. Plus it covers both Sequoia/Kings Canyon and Yosemite.

Planning: A nice job is done. There is a lot of detail on roads into the parks and hotels, information lacking in the more specialized hiking guides. It covers most of the big park highlights you don't want to miss if you're only visiting the region once or twice. This is not the sort of guide that will tell you where to find solitude and remote regions. It is also one of the best guides to have if you don't want to rough it the entire trip. I like to space long backpacking treks with a visit to a nice restaurant-this guide offers a lot of variety on this end. The same goes for hotels, if you're not into backpacking or looking for a place just after getting on/off a plane.

Hiking Trip Descriptions: Pretty minimal. This book spotlights the more popular trails but does a fairly decent job of highlighting don't miss items.

Maps: Non-topographic but highly readable. The printing is crisp and highly readable. Useful for planning short day trips.

Overall this is a pretty useful guide. As the price is great you can easily buy this to supplement a more specialized hiking guide and map. Note that Frommer seems to put out a new edition every couple of years. I don't think very much could have changed, so an older edition will do just fine.

Six million visitors a year traipse through the 1.6 million acres of Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon national parks, drawn by the mountains and meadows, waterfalls and wildflowers, rugged geology and staggering vistas. Yosemite Valley is where most folks flock, to view the awesome hunks of granite and waterfall spectacles, but the Valley represents just the merest fraction of what there is to see. The Frommer guide offer insights on the best views, car campgrounds and primitive campgrounds, best day hikes, waterfalls and picnic spots, best meals, supply stores, and places to take the kids. But the real guidance begins with detailed descriptions of hundreds of lakes, meadows, trails, and drives, plus all the particulars on lodges, motels, campsites, permits, and places to eat. If you want to explore the vastness, see fewer people, and inhale less exhaust, it's worth reading up on the options. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars as good as a pocket guide can get.......2003-07-17

Yosemite is one of my favorite places. I fall in love with this majestic park on my first trip there, and try to spend at least several days every year hiking Yosemite trails. I also like Sequoia and Kings Canyon, which are great parks for hikers and backpackers. Since I am not new to these parks, I was curious how the judgement and advice of this book would agree with my own impressions. I was pleasantly surprised. In this book, Frommer's made an outstanding example of how good a pocket-size guide can be. It has only 170 pages on three parks, and yet all essentials are covered - how to get there, what to see, where to stay, it has maps of the parks and of the hiking trails, it has lists of the best views accessible from the road and ratings of hikes, it has information for backpackers (based on the personal experience of the author). In my opinion and experience, the ratings of trails are very accurate, and descriptions of hotels and restaurants are unusually unbiased. In fact, I could not find a single one which I would not agree with. All ratings/descriptions maintain positive attitude, but it is very easy to read between the lines, e.g., if the book says that a certain restaurants has "a simple but adequate menu" and does not give it a single star, it means that it is a crappy and overpriced snack bar, but it will help you to survive until you get to a better place; when it says that the place is excellent and gives it three stars, then it is really good. One can surely find more detailed books on day hikes or backpacking in Yosemite. However, no other travel guide gives so much practical information and good advice in a condensed form. If you are planning to visit Yosemite for a day or two and do not know where to start, I cannot think about a better book to recommend.

50 Trade Secrets of Great Design: Packaging encourages a greater understanding of design and will appeal to all who appreciate good design and design professionals. There are 50 contemporary projects featured, each taking a close look behind the scenes to reveal the fascinating design processes that were involved from conception to completion, including problems that arose on the way and how these were tackled.

Original visuals, plans and sketches, interim designs, colorful photographs, and lively captions demonstrate the workings behind the designs, with an analysis of the styles, ideas, skills and solutions arrived at. This book illustrates the myriad ways designers work; what triggers their imagination; what secrets and tricks of the trade they employ, and also in our increasingly technological world to what extent computers have been used.

If your'e an artist, this book will help you design your packages, it got a lot of design samples, printed in a nice paper, fully colored with alot of explanation and some sketches and samples of packages before they produced the final packaging output.

As a graphic designer, I found this book very helpful. It shows how products were created from concept to finish. It has become one of my staples in my library. Very inspirational as well.

                bit expensive.

                1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-06-05

The author used to have me waiting eagerly for her books but not anymore. I remember books I have read and the major details and I expect the author to be consistant. She really ruined it for me when she referred back to her crime solving in Hounded to Death and called the dogs Beagles! For heavens sake they were Bassets. That is a major mistake. I had a Basset and I was insulted that she could not keep her breeds straight. She needs to keep her facts straight. So she is in the doghouse and I will spend my dog biscuits on authors who remember their characters at least as well as the readers.

4 out of 5 stars Need more Jake.......1998-09-25

This book is as good as all the others in the series but had to give it one less star because there is not enough about Jake the dog hero. In the books before there was more about Jake and his family which made it more interesting for animal lovers. So Author keep on writing this series and I will keep on reading but please keep the animal adventures also. I would like to know the latest on Jake's rather large son. It is ok to keep adding animals to your list of characters for new stories but they were too much in the background this time. Keep up the humor with son of Jake.

In Confessions of a Street Addict, the man who first made a name for himself on Wall Street successfully managing his hedge fund--and then became famous on Main Street with his manic appearances on CNBC--tells the improbable story of his career as journalist, Wall Street pundit, Internet entrepreneur, and television commentator. For the most part, Cramer manages to avoid the self-congratulatory hype that mars so many books of this ilk; in fact, what makes Confessions so compelling are the shots that Cramer takes at himself, be it his now infamous capitulation during the stock market panic of October 1998, when he wrote a piece for TheStreet.com advising readers of an impending crash just as the market began to rebound, or the callous way he treated so many around him in pursuit of the next trade. Here's an informative, honest, and rollicking read for fans of CNBC, TheStreet.com, or anyone who has ever lost sleep thinking about their portfolios. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

                Book Description

In the most candid look at Wall Street since Liar's Poker, James J. Cramer, cofounder of TheStreet.com, radio and television commentator, and for years one of Wall Street's premier money managers, takes readers on a no-holds-barred tour of life on Wall Street-revealing how the game is played, who breaks the rules, and who gets hurt.

Everyone on Wall Street knows Jim Cramer, and Cramer knows Wall Street better than anyone. For fifteen years he ran Cramer, Berkowitz, one of the Street's most successful hedge funds with a compounded annual return of 24% after all fees. In Confessions of a Street Addict he takes us from his fascination with the stock market as a middle-class kid in the Philadelphia suburbs to Harvard, where he began managing money. After an apprenticeship at Goldman, Sachs, Cramer set out on his own with his wife, Karen, the "Trading Goddess," as his partner. Cramer brilliantly describes the life of a money manager -- the frenetic pace, the constant pressure to outperform the market and other fund managers, and the shark-like attacks fund managers make as they circle a fund perceived to be in trouble.

At the same time that he was managing money, Cramer was one of the best-known commentators on the financial markets. A former president of the Harvard Crimson, Cramer had been a newspaper reporter before he began managing money. While he was a fund manager, he wrote for SmartMoney and other publications, making him one of the first money managers to offer insight and analysis from inside the world of finance. With the rise of the Internet and online publishing, he co-founded TheStreet.com, the online financial Web site. In one of the most fascinating chapters in this book, Cramer takes us inside the IPO of TheStreet.com, where he found himself a knowledgeable but helpless onlooker as his own Web site came on the market at an unrealistically high price that it never reached again, a harbinger of the dot-com disasters that would soon haunt the stock market.

Throughout the book Cramer is characteristically outspoken, outrageous, and candid about everyone, himself included. There has never been a high-wired, high-octane book about Wall Street like this one.

                5 out of 5 stars Fascinating read!!!.......2007-09-18

After having read this book I am no longer convinced that Jim Cramer is crazy. Hyperactive, eccentric - maybe, but not crazy. Fascinating read! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars In The Middle Of It All.......2007-08-03

This book is not about investing. Rather, it is about Cramer's interesting life and the millions he made and lost in the stock market in the past few decades. As a former journalist, Cramer writes well compared to most traders and the reader will have a hard time putting this book down once started. Cramer takes the reader from his days as a struggling journalist and Harvard law student to the hallowed halls of Goldman Sachs to his chaotic life as a hedge fund manager and media commentator. This book also provides good perspectives on the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the fallout of the collapse of Long-Term Capital Management as well as the dotcom madness of the late 1990s. In many ways, Cramer was in the middle of it all and thus provides good insights in buying stocks in hard times. This book should be read by everyone interested in a job in the financial markets because, love him or hate him, this book will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping it Real.......2007-07-29

Cramer is a loveable egomaniac. If you can get past his hubris, you will get a real feeling of what he went through while managing his hedge fund. I particularly liked his writing style. Maybe it was the subject matter, but I think more so, his style, kept me turning the pages faster and faster. I couldn't get enough. Really.

I guess you could say it was a combination thriller, real life story, informational, documentary, etc.

As you can tell, I really enjoyed reading it. He's a wonderful writer with a first-hand knowledge of the stock market. Cramer is smart and wants you to understand the "inside" of the market. I think he succeeds wonderfully.

                4 out of 5 stars A glimpse into Jim's world........2007-07-21

You either hate Jim or love Jim, it is hard to ignore him and his antics. I generally liked reading his books. His books are very inspirational to me. They give me a glimpse of how hedge funds operate. I know in his books, he mentions how he had to live in his car during his not-so-rich days, and how from there, he went on to make over 100 million dollars. In his books he also touches on the human side of his journey, he talks about his wife supporting him all along and sometime it felt like he thought his wife was actually a better trader than him. That is obviously his humbleness, what he has achieved is not an easy feat. Reading the financial media (I was a subscriber of his website realmoney.com for a long time), he is dubbed a believer of fundamental analysis, and generally bullish on the market. His books reflect some of the same themes.
If you are a technical analysis person, this book is probably not for you, but if you want to get involved in a hedge fund some day, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book for all, not just financial types.......2007-07-16

I bought this book for my husband, who watches Cramer on TV religiously, and found myself reading it when he was done. It was very interesting so learn how Cramer came to be where he is today. A little boring in some of the pages where he gives very detailed information about some of the stocks and higher level market data, but the rest of the book is very good.

Potential readers of this book should look at the number of used books available for sale. 22 COPIES!!! If that doesn't tell you something I'm not sure what would. At some point in the near future, I expect Mr. Lanyi will have to pay people to read his book. My advice, don't take the bait; life is too short and time is too valuable. "Confessions" contains little of value for either the novice or experienced investor. One last comment to the guy trying to sell an autographed copy for over $20 - you're dreaming. An autographed copy is probably worth less than a normal copy.

1 out of 5 stars St. Augustine Need Not Worry.......2001-05-15

Look up the word meretricious in the dictionary - you'll probably see the cover of this book. This is the worst type of non-fiction- boring to read, misleading and worst of all dangerous if the "advice" within is followed. Is anyone else suspicious of the sample "client portfolios" provided? Hmmmm....a client has over a dozen positions in the portfolio and guess what - all big winners, no losers. Anyone who has spent a minimal amount of time studying the market knows this is highly unrealistic. Lanyi must think his readers are either suckers or fools. I can only assume he has something on the publisher and/or editor to get them to back this vanity project. After reading Confessions, I wondered why Amazon does not offer the option of giving a book no stars. If ever there was a book that deserved it - Confessions of a Stockbroker is it.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2001-03-09

After reading this book I can honestly say that I didn't walk away with one valuable information other then not wasting my time reading a sequel to Confession of a Stock Broker. A waste of time and a waste of money would be the best way to describe this book. If you're looking to read a book which wont provide you with any benefits then this is it.

1 out of 5 stars Badly written, cliched, simplistic.......2000-10-23

Mr Lanyi sent me an autographed copy of this book in order to solicit me as a client for his private banking practice. I read it out of curiosity; it took me maybe an hour. I can't imagine how he could think that this book would bring him clients.

The book is written at a fifth-grade level, using simple sentences arranged into short paragraphs divided by asterisks. The biographical notes are standard Horatio Alger stuff about rags-to-riches; there is nothing telling or insightful in them, just many stretched analogies in which Mr Lanyi attempts to relate his life story to his investing philosophies. The investing methods presented are vague, cliched, and seem to concentrate on unheard-of small-cap stocks. Polanyi says "I look for companies that are growing," as if he were the first to come up with this idea.

Worst of all, this book emphasizes the stocks Mr Lanyi picked that ended up skyrocketing -- and there is nary a mention of the failures that even the best stock recommender has. Why doesn't Lanyi include an honest chart of how many successes and how many failures he's had? One would have to be very, very naive to think that Lanyi is telling the entire story when he talks about his successes.

Overall, I can't see anything of financial, educational, or literary value in this book. I thought about giving it away to a library, but I don't think financial misinformation such as this should be spread. This book may just end up in the mixed-paper recycling bin. For educational reading about stocks and stockbrokers, try "A Random Walk Down Wall Street," "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator," or "Where Are the Customers' Yachts?"

                                        Description:
This four-year field study evaluated the influence of grass species and endophyte infection on weed density and cover in stands of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass managed as low maintenance lawns. Bare ground, turfgrass cover, and weed cover varied over time with grass species. Stands of tall fescue generally had more bare ground, greater weed cover, and less grass cover than stands of perennial ryegrass during the first year following seeding. However, this trend was reversed over time with stands of perennial ryegrass having more bare ground, more weed cover, and less turfgrass cover compared to stands of tall fescue after four years. The influence of endophyte infection was much weaker than predicted having a significant negative influence only on cover by one weed species, Cerastium vulgatum. Results indicated that grass species and fungal endophyte infection may influence patterns of weed occurrence in low maintenance lawns, although the influence of grass species is likely far more important in this regard. Observed patterns in plant cover and density mainly reflected establishment and growth characteristics of the two primary grass species planted.

                                                Book Description

This clearly written, thought provoking manual includes over 50 exercises and improvisations designed to stimulate and challenge students-disabled and non-disabled-----at all levels of dance. Taking improvisation as his focus, Adam Benjamin asks what it has to offer as an art form and how it can be better used to meet the changing needs of dance education. He also explores the history of a dis-integrated dance practice, placing it within the wider context of cultural and political movements. He includes useful hints on the practicalities of setting up workshops covering issues as diverse as the safety aspects of wheelchairs and the accessibility of dance spaces.

                                                Book Description

"One of the most extraordinary stories in sports history is also one of its least known. Jimmy Winkfield was a gifted jockey and a remarkably intrepid man, and his life was a singular adventure. His is a story of persistence, hardship, and triumph, and it should be long remembered."—Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit: An American Legend

"In the entire sweep of American sports, from the days of a roistering John L. Sullivan in the 19th Century through the Tiger Woods phenomenon of the 21st, no figure made a bolder and more original odyssey of his life than Jimmy Winkfield, the poor son of former slaves whose brilliance as a jockey bore him from the winner's circle at the Kentucky Derby to the royal courts of Czarist Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and from Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany to the salons of Paris. In Wink, author Ed Hotaling skilfully reports and chronicles Winkfield's battles against racism in the New World--his courage and daring in escaping that most implacable of foes--and his success and rise to glory as a rider and then a trainer in the Old World. The tale of Wink is an illuminating and inspiring read." —William Nack, author of Secretariat: The Making of a Champion, and My Turf: Horses, Boxers, Blood Money and the Sporting Life

"It is phenomenal enough that Jimmy Winkfield became a dominant force in American horse racing half a century before Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers. But this two-time Kentucky Derby–winner's adventures after leaving to race overseas make his story all the more compelling. Ed Hotaling has a marvelous tale to tell. This is the stuff of great nonfiction."—Douglas Brinkley, author of Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War

"In this fine book, Ed Hotaling adds the texture of a rich individual life to what his previous work has already told us about the great black jockeys of a century ago."—Henry Louis Gates, Jr., bestselling author, Chair of the Department of African and African American Studies and Director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University

Jimmie Winkfield stands before a great curtain of racism, assassinations, prejudice, and person danger. But through it all it was the horses that he understood and loved. This gifted rider a mere, 4'11" lived his life with great persistance and bravery. If anyone loves stories of thoroughbred racing they will find "Wink" a true revelation. Hotaling not only told the story of a black jockey but he wove the story in and around events in history. If you are looking for this book to be of the same flavor as "Seabiscuit" you will be grossly disappointed. Hotaling is a writer that does not rely on the "Hollywood" view of how to write a book, rather he writes an intellectual adventure of a great person in historical thoroughbred racing.

I learned of the book when I heard its author being interviewed on NPR. I have no interest in horse racing, but bought the book on the theory that a life this compelling must result in a book equally so. I was, in large part, correct. The writing style leaves a little to be desired, but this is a fast, and gripping, read. In the end, one is left with a real sense for what Winkfield's life must have been like.

                                                5 out of 5 stars A Sparkling Biography.......2005-07-10

You don't even have to like horseracing to love Ed Hotaling's brilliantly researched and engaging histories with a racetrack theme.

As he did in his other two memorable and important books on the subject, Hotaling's WINK unearths the forgotten magic of the past and brings it to life, vivid, and sparkling.

WINK is a major contender to win a National Book Award or Pulitzer for biography. It is just terrific.

4 out of 5 stars An incredible book.......2005-05-05

Like a couple of the other reviewers here already said, this is a great book. I really don't care much for racing but Ed Hotaling really brought the story of Jimmy Winkfield to life for me. What an amazing life and what a fine book.

Still, like the reviewer below noted, Hotaling glosses over the less-than-wonderful aspects of our hero's behavior, particularly towards his family. And given that this is probably the only book we're going to see on him for a while, it is a bit frustrating about all the information he leaves out. He never tells us where Winkfield is buried, nor does he go into any particular detail about what happened with his children or grandchildren. It's a somewhat slim book - 300 pages without the end notes - and I get the feeling that it was violently trimmed down in the editing.

In any event, though, these are just minor gripes. Even if you aren't a big sports fan, this is a gripping read for anyone who loves books.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Story of the Life of Jimmy Winkfield.......2005-04-30

Thank you Mr. Hotaling for sharing Jimmy's story. His biography takes us to an important time in American history and takes us to far off places in the early 20th Century. Jimmy's passion for the sport and his circumstances brought him to Warsaw, controlled by the Russians in 1904. I can't imagine taking this risk, it tells us so much about Jimmy's confidence, his sense of self worth and passion for racing. He watched other jockeys leave America and found a way to participate in racing overseas. His story takes him through difficult times in Europe where he died at the age of 94.

What I liked most about the book is that it is a human interest story that shows Jimmy Winkfield's courage, gives us insight into early 20th century horse racing in America and what circumstances moved American jockeys overseas to ride. The story is told in the context of 20th Century history, which increases our understanding of the times in which Jimmy lived and the career decisions he made.

A must read for those who love horse racing, history and a good human-interest story.

In 1904, at age twenty-three, two-time Kentucky Derby-winner Jimmy Winkfield was forced from American horseracing by a virulent combination of racism and hard times. Wink left his beloved Kentucky, bought a steamer ticket for Europe, and made the world his racetrack.

There he embarked on a decades-long odyssey, rising to superstardom and winning and losing two fortunes. Driven at gunpoint from Russia by the Bolshevik Army and from France by Nazi occupiers, the 105-pound jockey proved himself the most resilient, courageous athlete of the twentieth century. In 2005, Winkfield was inducted into America's horse racing Hall of Fame.

Winkfield achieved a human greatness that transcends the limits of sport. In Wink, Ed Hotaling tells this wonderful story--this American story--in all its rich and vibrant power.

Jimmy Winkfield led an epic life as a champion jockey driven from America due to racism on and off the track while losing everything twice in Europe due to the world wars. But through it all, author Ed Hotaling shows a man driven to succeed no matter what barriers were placed in front of him.

By the age of 23 in 1904, Winkfield was a two-time Kentucky Derby champion and arguably the greatest jockey in the nation. But the ugliness of racism found Winkfield not being able to generate any interest from Thoroughbred owners and trainers. And before he - along with all black jockeys - were cast aside by hate, the rides were getting rougher with white jockeys trying to prevent wins through a variety of crass fouls, while judges looked the other way.

Winkfield became a successful jockey in Europe - especially in the Czar's Russia - but the Bolshevik Revolution found Winkfield leading an expedition on horseback - many of the horses were champions of the turf - out of the country in a perilous journey of life & death. His career in the Thoroughbred industry was rebuilt after the war in France, but Winkfield again lost everything when he was driven from France during the early stages of the Nazi occupation.

Though his grand achievements were largely forgotten as the years breezed by, Winkfield was slated to be honored late in his life in an event the evening before the Kentucky Derby. What happens when the champion jockey again meets the wall of racism brings his life as a jockey to a poignant coda.

The Thoroughbred industry has been about as timely as Major League Baseball in dealing with the past racism in the sport. Winkfield has a minor stakes race named after him on the New York schedule, but it struggles to gate a full field.

Hotaling does a magnificent job in delving into a history that has been buried for too many years. Winkfield lived an incredible life of triumph & heartbreak, and one does not have to be a Thoroughbred racing fan to appreciate his accomplishments under incredible odds.
