If you think children and travel are mutually exclusive, Travel with Children is here to prove you wrong. Author Maureen Wheeler had been circumnavigating the globe for years in the company of her husband and saw no reason to stop once their two children came along. Her book was written in response to the many parents who wondered if they should postpone travel until their kids were older. Absolutely not, Wheeler says; for every drawback to travel with kids (and there are many), there are also numerous benefits. Parenting is, after all, a universal experience, and children can open many doors to foreign cultures. This third edition of Travel with Children includes Maureen Wheeler's practical guide to everything from getting ready to getting wherever you're going, as well as travel stories from readers, other Lonely Planet staffers, and even the Wheelers' well-traveled children, Kieran and Tashi.

So, if you have a yen to travel, don't worry about farming the kids out to grandma--arm yourself with Maureen Wheeler's Travel with Children and take them along. Think of the stories you'll have to tell the grandchildren.

    1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-03-11

This book was not what I expected. I was looking for travel tips for traveling with my 1 year old child. I found page after page of anecdotes of other parents taking their kids to zoos around the world. If you are looking tips on what to bring/ how to travel I would recommend Rick Steve's "Europe through the Back Door." His traveling with kids section is much more pratical.

    3 out of 5 stars good supplement.......2005-09-06

If you have never traveled with your baby or kids before, I would recommend a different book that contains more "advice," like Lutz's On the Go with Baby.

If you are going to travel extensively with your kids, this is a nice book to have in your travel library. It does not get too specific about individual places, but then again it does have some interesting specifics you may not find in other books. The first-hand accounts are great. It is rather short, but it does have some good advice and anecdotes pertaining to travel in out-of-the-way places. I was disappointed it does not refer to the extent English is spoken in various foreign countries. However, if you are a little adventurous and are thinking about planning a trip with kids-in-tow, but don't know exactly where you want to go, this is a good book to use in the decision making process.

1 out of 5 stars written in a lunch hour!.......2004-05-17

I'm afraid thats the impression I got, and I felt a bit duped, especially as it seemed an exciting concept. Someone (a journalist?) had some ideas, had some spare time, knew a few people who had been abroad with their children, and did some cutting and pasting!

Much of the content is obvious, like bring some nappies when travelling with a baby (really!),the travel stories are strangely pedestrian ... even in the most exotic locations the stories and the people barely come to life it is so passionless, and single parents are given just a couple of pages.

On the one hand it is not particularly insightful or inspirational, and on the other hand it doesn't really take account of real problems that may arise e.g. a young toddler's illness abroad (my recent experience).

Some of the obvious things it says are, I have to say, truly breathtaking.

but its not so bad, if you can read through all the "filler" you might find a few interesting bits, you could borrow it from the library, but please don't shell out good money for such an unserious book.

one final constant annoyance is the author's constant referral to children (and babies presumably) as "kids". Why journalists do this I don't know. I think something dismissive about the term, and it says alot about the level at which the book is pitched.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-04-27

Having used travel guides by the publisher in the past, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, the sections regarding travel advice and tips only encompassed pp. 1-63 and most of the tips were most basic common-sense advice. More egregiously, I would caution against the new age health tips on pp. 55-57 for children (without identifying the appropriate ages) and which seem dangerous in any event. It was this section which prompted me to toss down the book. The remainder, pp. 65-262, consists of extremely general "to do"s in various parts of the world, For example, some countries/regions were covered and others not, with little rhyme or reason. The information provided was too general to be useful and too much of a rush to cover different regions to really provide any comprehensive suggestions or guidance. Having bought the book on the strengh of the Lonely Planet reputation, I was very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2002-01-30

I really appreciated this title, as one of the best on travelling with younger children. Advice, first-hand narratives, child gear availability(highchairs, carseats) and breastfeeding acceptability info is given on many countries as broken down by region, both typical - European countries - to non-typical, such as Nepal. Much of the advice is provided by experts in that region (i.e. a family who lived in the mideast provides Mideast information).

While it's probably not the best for parents of older children (try Cynthia Harriman's Take your Kids to Europe), it's incredibly inspirational to those with children 4 and under, even those with multiple children 4 and under (one contributor has such a situation!). It's also *much* better than the previous edition by the same title, which you may still find floating around in used bookstores.

I only wish they had done some sort of "best of" list - i.e. best countries for parents of toddlers, best for parents of babies, best for older-younger kids, etc.

This book was really helpful and fun. I like the fact that it gave me the facts in a brief manner rather than belaboring the topic with lots of fluff. I found the methods in this book to be gentle and very effective.

I bought the book because I thought it help with my new puppy. It told me things not to do BUT not what to do. I have to get a trainer now for my puppy because the book did not help me. It kept doing bad things even when I use the treats.

One of the best books I've read. I didn't have alot of time, and the format was consistent and helped me to remember what I had read. I also liked the illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous !!!.......1999-06-26

This is simply the most enjoyable and useful dog training book I've ever read. The best parts were teaching other people to train your dog, and teaching your dog to train itself. At long last, through reading this book, I've been able to train my dad to train our dogs. Brilliant book! I loved it, and so did our dogs.

            Book Description

For centuries, gardens have inspired artists. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, photographers ranging from Eugène Atget to Edward Steichen were drawn to their beauty and rich metaphorical associations. This book looks at a group of artists who, beginning in the mid-1980s, turned to gardens as a subject for their photography. The extraordinary and diverse work shown here demonstrates a wide range of artistic response—from reflecting upon the garden as a site of lyrical beauty and luxuriant atmosphere to drawing upon it as a dark visual metaphor for the manipulation of nature.

Contemporary Photography and the Garden—Deceits and Fantasies, which accompanies a traveling exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts, presents the remarkably wide-ranging work of an international group of contemporary artists: Sally Apfelbaum, Daniel Boudinet, Gregory Crewdson, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Sally Gall, Lynn Geesaman, Linda Hackett, Geoffrey James, Len Jenshel, Erica Lennard, Sally Mann, Catherine Opie, Jack Pierson, Marc Quinn, and Jean Rault. Depicting gardens in Japan, India, Europe, Great Britain, Brazil, Mexico, and the United States, their work investigates the forms, atmosphere, and symbolism of the garden. Essays by Thomas Padon, Robert Harrison, Ronald Jones, and Shirin Neshat examine the garden as a subject in contemporary photography and as a signifier in cultural and religious history.

5 out of 5 stars The Garden as a Common Thread for our Finest Photographers.......2006-12-31

Thomas Padon's fine book/catalogue (made to accompany a traveling exhibition of the works included) is one to please a diverse audience: garden lovers, art history devotees, and those addicted to the art of fine photography will all find this very special book one of endless pleasure.

The concept of the garden as the subject for a photographic essay is a unique one and the artists whose works range from the old concepts to the contemporary and utilizing all manner of camera techniques are some of the best in this field. This is not simply collected garden shots but rather images of the mysteries both immediately accessible and those more occult that require time and repeated exposure to appreciate. The dialogue of the book is provided with fine essays not only by Padon but also by such fine and creative minds as Robert Harrison, Ronald Jones, and Shirin Neshat.

But in the end the book is about pictures and these rare images are captured by such disparate artists as Catherine Opie, Sally Mann, Len Jenschel, Jack Pierson, Sally Apfelbaum, Daniel Boudinet, Peter Fischli and David Weiss to name but a few. The gardens are represented by locations from India, Japan, Europe, North and South America and are selected to investigate the symbolism both spiritual and cultural that these wondrous images capture.

Every aspect of this book is set with loving care and is worthy of the libraries of everyone in love with the secret treasures of the Garden. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, December 06

5 out of 5 stars new ideas in photography.......2004-12-08

I bought this book because I am much into garden and flower fotography myself. Anyway I think this book is interesting to everybody looking for new ideas in photography, in general. It is just amazing to see how different can be the approches to a same subject. You go from almost impressionistic views, to ultrasharp images, to compositions that recall maybe cubism in showing all different sides of the garden at the same time. If you like photography, buy it. You will find it deeply stimulating. And of course the photos are amazing and the print is just excellent.

Two by Two is a whirlwind tour of the Los Angeles dancing scene by Eve Babitz, who has made a career of delineating the social comedies of L.A. Here, in a series of loosely connected chapters, she talks with instructors of various forms of social dance--including tango, salsa, country two-step, and both East and West Coast swing--about why dancing has become so popular again, even with all the difficulties of learning the steps. The story does not so much progress in a linear direction as it orbits around a shifting core, propelled by the occasionally sparkling dialogue. Apart from a sharply unexpected dose of reality in the book's epilogue, Two by Two occupies a pleasantly hazy daydream that, while it may or may not inspire you to hit the dance floor, reveals the charms that Babitz and her friends have found there.

                Book Description

Forget Arthur Murray, or those dreaded dance classes your mother made you take. Two by Two is a fast-paced swirl through the dancing scene in L.A., where Leonardo DiCaprio has been know to swing at The Derby and Sandra Bullock salsas at El Floridita. Eve Babitz, a writer known for her hip, off-the-cuff, idiosyncratic style, spends two years of her life, ruins nine pairs of shoes, and goes through countless dance partners learning to appreciate and master all the hot dances from foxtrot and two-step to lindy, tango, salsa, and swing. Along the way she meets obsessed dancers and listens night after night as they pour out the secrets of their style -- who the best teachers are, where to find the perfect dancing shoes, and how to fall in love with your partner.

Though the entire country is engaged in this dance revival, the L.A. scene is particularly alive, Babitz finds, because there have always been people in Los Angeles who insist on going out and being "in the scene," and plenty of music, charm, colorful groups of people, and adventure to lure them. She attributes the dance craze to the fact that singles bars died when people sobered up and realized just how abysmal that scene was. Drawn by the vivacious and electric dance scene, people now meet others who come for lessons, and immediately embrace the ambition to be as one with the music, the night, and someone, maybe you.

Eve brings the flirtatious energy of dancing alive like no other writer. She describes salsa as "a dance of contradictions," "On the one hand, you want to 'be small,' as people who lead you will say if your steps are too big. But on the other hand, you want to stagger your competition by the immensity of your intensity. You want your own smoldering pride and divine fire to consume the room, and yet you want to hardly move." Two by Two is not a book that teaches you how to dance, but it will surely make you want to learn once you've read it.

4 out of 5 stars You and the Night and the Music.......2006-03-23

The book is about the dance scene in Los Angeles in the 90s. Babitz took dance lessons, went dancing, interviewed dancers and instructors, and made friends among them. There is commentary interspersed with dialog. The book reads easily and in the Epilogue, written some time after the main text because she was seriously burned and spent time recovering, contains a brief update on the dance scene (which rapidly changes, with clubs coming and going, fads coming and going, dancers coming and going, including some dying). The chapters are based on specific dances: fox-trot, two-step, tango, cajun and fais-dodo, ballroom, salsa, and both east coast and west coast swing.

At first blush the book seems a break from her previous works. They were fiction (although pretty autobiographical) and based primarily in the 60s, with some tales from her parents generation back into the 30s, when Holllywood was Hollywood. There was a grace and an ambiance which she presents. And there were certain people who were graced and who helped make that ambiance. In many ways that period passed in the 70s, when she wrote to fiction pieces. There is a nostalgia about them. TWO BY TWO also harkens back to that time, to Fred and Ginger, to when there still were social graces, where flirting was an art form. The dance scene has elements of this and TWO BY TWO traces this out, but in a New Journalism fashion. And the book is a paen to dancing, because it is fun and good for you. I recommend this book

I have purchased this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I and my fiend's have also been able to put it to good use. However, I saw this woman on Book TV C-SPAN2 recently and she is a babbling fool. I say keep writing and less talking.

Leadership motivational speaker Donald T. Phillips, who has previously drawn organizational lessons for modern businesses from the careers of Abraham Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, turns to civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as a role model. A discussion of the Montgomery bus boycott, for example, draws out such principles as "Set goals and create a plan of action" and "Involve the people." More effective as a self-help book for business than as a biography, it does provide a useful introduction to King's life.

While the American Civil War formally ended slavery, it did not end segregation or racial discrimination. It took nearly 15 years of activism, led by the nonviolent movement organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to complete the transformation. The final result was the elimination of federal and state-sanctioned segregation and discrimination. This book chronicles the tenets of leadership that Dr. King practiced during the American Civil Rights Movement. From mastering the art of public speaking to persuading through love and nonviolence, from encouraging imaginative new solutions in changing times to preaching hope, optimism and the power of dreams, this study of Dr. King's leadership offers a definitive and inspiring modern-day example of leadership at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional narrative of a great leader.......2004-07-18

Donald T. Phillips does an exceptional job at narrating the life of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He does an incredible job in tying in the aspects of Dr. King's life as a man, and activist together with the principals of Leadership.

He breaks down the book into 4 sections, that each details the start and end of the American Civil Rights movement. Phillips does an amazing job at chronicling the events that most shaped the philosophy of Dr. King.

I truly enjoyed this book because it helped me realize that it is possible for me to achieve my goals using the same techniques that Dr. King used. The book does a great job at outlining how a normal person can create change the way Dr. King did. Whether you live in turbulent times like those in which the Civil Rights took place or not.

I recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position to those who aspire to be leaders, but mostly to those with a goal to succeed. The knowledge you will acquire with this book is invaluable to future successes.

The book targets all, but I think it specifically aims to inspire African- Americans especially those who wish to be in leadership positions. The book in general is a great read for businesses and for groups in general. It informs the audience about the dynamics of groups and how to work through the problems that groups face.

It helps inform leaders as to the advantages and disadvantages of being a leader. Overall the book is a great read. And you will truly enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for aspiring leaders.......2002-11-16

Donald Phillips did a wonderful job of telling the story of Martin Luther King Jr. from his childhood to his death, and connecting it all to a marvelous leadership style. Being a student of leadership studies and a fan of Martin Luther King Jr., I chose this book as a study of both subjects. Having read it, I have to say I learned more about leadership from this book than any other I have read. However, I am no longer a fan of MLK......... he is now a hero of mine.

As Donald Phillips points out, for every major turning point in American history, creative leaders - right for the times and uniquely suited to the task - assume the mantle of leadership. Donald Phillips not only describes how MLK ended up at the mantle, but how and why he was the right person for the job.

MLK's movement is not the same civil rights movement being pushed by the self-serving, so-called, activists today. Read this book, you will learn about a true leader and what a true leader is. It is easy reading and inspiring. Highly recommended.

                4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-04-18

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech was voted the most electrifying public address of the twentieth century. It takes some kind of a leader to give that kind of a speech. Donald T. Phillips presents the ideals of leadership that Martin Luther King Jr. followed in an overview of the history of the civil rights struggle. Phillips describes the techniques King used at various stages of the civil rights battle. He also shares King's comments on leadership. Many of the principles will be quite familiar: listen to learn, lead by being led, awaken direct action, encourage creativity and involve the people. However, the book is especially interesting when it demonstrates how King put these principles into practice. This well-organized, well-written book is clear, direct, and easy to read. While it is written for the general public (especially for African-Americans and those interested in civil rights), we [...] find this book interesting for all managers and executives, particularly those who like to learn the lessons of history.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome book!.......2001-02-09

I am a student and a teacher of leadership skills, and I have found no better example than Martin Luther King Jr. This book combines the history of King's movement, but also chronicles the qualities which made King great. The text is easy to read, and fascinating. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Leadership should be required reading for anyone who hopes to impact their world. The famed Harvard psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, who studied moral development, named King as one of the greatest moral thinkers in history. Read this book, and you will understand why.

5 out of 5 stars inspiring book on leadership.......2000-01-31

I picked up this book simply thinking it would be a great story about leadership, but the underlying history of Martin Luther King is riveting as well. The leadership stories translate well to business and personal leadership--they speak to (all) people wanting to be part of a higher, unifying mission. If you like to "mark-up" the margins with thoughts keep a pen handy for this one. Its a book I talked about with colleagues and family more than any other I've read.
