Useful Guide.......2007-05-13
This is a good bookend to the Eyewitness Guide. The Eyewitness Guides are good for telling you about what you want to see while the Time Out guide is much much better on hotels, restaurants and other practical matters. You really do need both and a better map. My only complaint about the Time Out guide is the advertising. Not only does it make the guide larger than it needs to be, it also brings into question the objectivity of some the suggestions made.
An excellent guide - highly recommended.......2005-10-18
I used this book recently on my second visit to Prague. I'd spent a lot of time checking various guide books out before I went, & this one did prove to be the best. It doesn't have lots of pictures like some but the information content is excellent, & it includes a lot of info that only locals would really know. In fact, it's so good, I left my copy in Prague for a local there to use! And now I have to buy another copy for me!
The indispensable, no-bs guide to Praha.......2005-07-23
As a New Yorker, Time Out has established itself into my lexicon as a straightforward (don't expect them to dance around topics that may make a Frommer blush) guide that treats the reader as a native rather than a tourist. And for a city like Prague, that's the only way to travel. With the added bonus of being written by people who are actually from Prague, the latest edition of this Time Out proves to be the traveler's bible, whether your stay is for a few days, a few weeks, or a few months. I find Time Out to be the pentultimate source on a City, at once informative yet never dry, and reading the guides as you're about to board your plane makes for a great deal of fun, excitement, and anticipation.
All areas are covered, even some outside of the city (for those days where the Castle Steps and Pilsner Urquells are all too much), which means that even if you're staying somewhere further afield (such as Zizkov, just to take an example from personal experience), there will still be a handful of things mentioned that are worth doing/eating/drinking in the area. The listing of hotels is pretty broad and is broken down into the convenient categorizations of price and location, and even if you're already booked, it's nice to look up your hotel in this section beforehand to see what the real dirt is on it.
What is most beneficial in this guide is the overview of the metro and tram systems (including a metro map and an invaluable note on the night trams), which allow you to travel the city not only quickly, but with the confidence of a native (and in a city such as Prague which is still rife with petty crime, confidence and an "I'm-not-a-victim" attitude are the best safeguards). They incorporate their promotion of the public transportation systems in their guides by also referencing in site descriptions which metros and trams stop nearby. Moreover, many little gems that wouldn't be found in more commercial guidebooks (I still thank Will Tizard for introducing me to La Creperie, which exponentially lived up to its description). The key highlights are here, too, including a great section devoted entirely to the palace grounds.
Two of my other favourite features of the Time Out guides are especially helpful in Prague; the annual calendar details events throughout the year which, even if you can't travel around a certain set of dates, can still find something going on during your period of stay there. True to its magazine form, Time Out also features a lot of local advertisements for clubs, museums, theatre companies, and restaurants. There are great and thorough sections devoted to theatre, cinema, music (from jazz to rock to classical), nightclubs, museums, and gay & lesbian venues. In short, whatever it is that you came to Prague to do, Time Out can steer you in the right direction.

Wanna see Praha like a native?.......2000-10-08
Wanna see praha like a native? well- I did. As I was embarking on my journey for 6 months in Prague to go to school I obviouly wanted to experience Prague like a native and enjoy my time in the Czech Republic. Which comes to my point- The Time Out guide to Prague became my new best friend! It was definitly the most in depth travel book, with actual honest responses to good questions that others dont bother to touch. From where to get your clothes washed, to where to find the best deals on beer, to the cubist architecture, museums, to varying clubs, hostels, resturants, that the average tourist doesnt see. Because of Prague's large expat community, it also gave places where to meet other Americans, and where not too (if you wanted to be on your own) It was funny, as I entered my class the rest of the foreign students had brought with them their guides- but by the second week, mine became the standard. Everyone appreciated the honest descriptions to the sights. It was nice to know where you would be ripped off, where to aviod, how to bargain, what to try, and what not to. It also has a section on hospitals- very helpful, what to do in case of an accident, etc. This book is chock full of invaluable information that even after I returned from Prague, I still flip through in disbelief. Later this month, I am heading off to Vienna, and you better bet that I have my Time Out Vienna guide on me. I would not travel any more without one-and neither should you. For the casual tourist to the lenghty stay, this is definitly to book for you. To me it was a great find that will be with me for many trips to come.
Book Description
Comprehensive reviews of restaurants, bars, and lodgings. A sizeable community of expats call Prague home, having been attracted by the city’s affordable lifestyle and reputation for decadence.

Customer Reviews:
I highly endorse Time out guides.......2002-10-21
I am a Time out travel guide user for life. Once again, the detail, accuracy and maps are superior; esp to other travel books. I highly endorse the Time Out travel series to my friends all the time. The Time Out guide series is not truly for backpackers, or those on a shoe string type of budget. But if you are one who wants to get everything out of a city...and experience the best the city has to offer, Timeout is for you.
Honest and reliable information.......2002-07-30
I lived in Prague for a year and I referenced my Time Out nearly every week for restaurants, reliable maps, activities and historical information. I found the information to be well-written with clear explainations. Dress codes, crowds at certain bars and restaurants, prices were all accurate. I owned four guidebooks by four different well-known publishers, and the Time Out was all I really needed.
Witty and entertaining and covers the basics as a guidebook.......2001-02-04
This guidebook has accurate and good recommendations for hotels, restaurants and basic shopping and is written with wit. It also links hotels, restaurants and shops (if in central Prague) to the maps in the back of the book which is a tremendous help to find places. In terms of covering the sites in Prague, it is good for a basic overview. If you plan to visit Prague for a weekend or a long weekend, this is a great guidebook. If you are looking for a deeper understanding of specific sites, take a tour or supplement with another guidebook.
Its okay - but its not as good as the Rough Guide.......1998-07-01
I bought this book and the Rough Guide to Prague last week in order to plan my trip around Europe. The Time Out guides are okay but are more like directories of hotels, shops and sights than critical guides. They give you all the information you will ever need - but no information on what to see in the museums or at the sights it lists. This is why the Rough Guides are far superior. You get more criticism - really detailed commentaries on museums and galleries as well as the different areas and districts of Prague. The TO guide is also quite dry - with little on Politics, History and Culture compared to the Rough Guide.

Poor Copy of an Original.......2006-03-03
This is apparently a photo copy of the original that is bound as a book. The copy is not enhanced so it looks like someone used a library copier and bound the results. It appears the original was in a 5 by 7 format and thus the copy has 2 to 3 inch margins. A good book produced in an inappropriate format.

Customer Reviews:
Buy this book and he sells you more.......2005-01-08
Sad to say Lawn Aeration: Turn hard Soil into Cold Cash is a complete waste of your hard earned $45.00. Pedrotti offers little information about the true "nuts & bolts" of aeration. Rather his entire goal appears to be trying to sell the reader his aeration marketing products! I read the book from cover to cover and found little useful aeration information. I decided to give it a second chance and re-read it two weeks later. In the end I was even more upset with the author and how he keeps coming back to having the reader purchase his "cheesy" marketing products. Take it from someone who knows a fair amount about aeration and marketing in general - this book is a total waste of time, money and excitement - it is nothing but a rip-off! Shame on you Mr. Pedrotti - you cannot possibly make money on aeration. Your scheme is to sell elementary school level marketing junk produced by you with a ridiculous claim that it actually works!
Outstanding book! Great part time money maker........2005-01-01
You know this is a great book because there are NO USED books for sale on AMAZON. Everyone who bought this book has kept it!!! This book explains most everything you need to know. Very complete book, gives you great ideas and expands your thinking upon how to correctly go about this business.
The best guide for a succesful lawn aeration bussiness.......1999-10-26
I started a lawn aeration service 6 months ago, i just got this book four days ago, i followed the sales instructions given here and my sales percentage changed right away, i wish i have bought the book prior to starting my company, i could have saved lots of time and money. Ancizar Marin Owner Sunshine Lawn Aeration Pembroke Pines, Florida (954) 222-7709
THIS BOOK HELP ME MAKE MONEY.......1998-10-17
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A GOOD PART TIME BUSINESS TO START AND CAME ACROSS A YOUNG MAN THAT KNOCKED ON MY DOOR OFFERING LAWN AERATION TO ME. I HIRED HIM AND 20 MINS LATER WAS WRITING A CHECK FOR $60.00. MY LAWN THREE WEEKS LATER HAD NEVER LOOKED SO GREEN!! AFTER FINDING THIS BOOK I WAS ABLE TO PUT TOGETHER A NICE LITTLE BUSINESS. LAST YEAR I MADE OVER $15,000 ON THE SIDE OF BEING A FIREMAN. IT WAS ALL IN CASH TOO. PEDROTTI'S BOOK WAS GREAT. IT SPELLED OUT EVERYTHING ON MARKETING AND PRICING. HIS PLAN IS VERY WELL LAYED OUT AND EASY TO READ. WITHOUT THIS BOOK I WOULD HAVE MADE ALOT OF MISTAKES AND NOT HAD SUCH AN EASY TIME GETTING STARTED.

Book Description
Offers a fascinating glimpse into this world of outlandish costumes and outspoken emotions, wrenching sacrifices and shocking scandals, heartbreaking failures and glamorous achievements. This survey covers everything from the simple joy of Spanish folk dances to the controversy surrounding ballroom dancing's quest for recognition as an Olympic sport. More than 100 full-color photographs capture the style and panache of this unique phenomenon.
Customer Reviews:
A Lot of Fun!.......2002-07-20
OK...if you are a professional ballroom dancer, maybe you will find flaws in this book. I've read your criticisms of this book in the Amazon reviews. But, to an amateur (like me) who has only had 25 lessons, I thought this book was thrilling! I loved the color photography of the dancers in their glitzy outfits. I loved learning about what goes on before and after a competition. I loved learning about the history of the dance steps and famous ballrooms. This book gives you a wonderful inside look at ballroom dancing and I recommend it. It also makes an excellent coffee table book. People who don't even do ballroom dancing are fascinated with it and enjoy talking about it. So there!
let down.......2001-07-11
The book had too many poor photos. They were often so blurry they could hardly be seen. The better pictures were all split in the crack of the book and the good quality photos were of nonsense.
Captures Romance, Rhythm, Style and Athleticism of Ballroom.......1999-09-04
The book captures the essence of competitive ballroom dancing or what's now known as the Olympic-recognized "DanceSport". John Reynolds has done a great job in maintaining the views of the athletes and participants in ballroom dancing and profiles stars like Marcus & Karen Hilton, the "Torvill & Dean" of Ballroom/DanceSport. This book will hopefully continue to increase awareness to the general public that Ballroom Dancing is more than a social activity, but an Olympic-recognized sport.
Great photographs, Phantom captions, Questionable layout.......1999-08-06
The full-color photographs featured in this coffee-table book are very stunning; truly an adventurous backstage tour of the action/glamour world of championship ballroom DanceSports. The written content of the edition is very discriptive. Did not appreciate the clumsey double-truck layout of at least two large photographs. Poor layout!!! Reduce those large landscape-format photos to fit on one page, not on two pages. Eliminating those annoying two-page photos would have allowwed for extra action shots. Need specific captions of every photo. Didn't know if these were amateur, or professional dance couples. I didn't recognise most of the couples featured in the edition. The general content captions didn't work for me. Nonetheless, this edition is a welcomed addition to anyone's coffee-table library.
Captures Essence of DanceSport Nicely!.......1999-01-13
As a competition dancer, I enjoyed this book thouroughly. The text is rich, and captures the essence of the Ballroom Dance very well. Accurate in content, this book describes aspects of DanceSport in a way that is satisfying to dancers, and yet would be very enjoyable and informative to non-dancers. Covering everything from the evolution of social dances to the rigors of Blackpool competition, and from what to look for in respectable dance studio to the disussion of DanceSport as an Olympic event, the book is very complete. It is a must have for DanceSport enthusiasts. The photos are vivid, though I'd have liked some detail in the captions. If you don't dance now, you'll want to give it a try by the time you reach the back cover. Nicely done Mr. Reynolds.

Black Frontiersman: The Memoirs of Henry O. Flipper : First Black Graduate of West Point
ASIN: 0803268904 |
Book Description
Henry Ossian Flipper was one of the nineteenth-century West’s most remarkable individuals. The first African American graduate of West Point, he served four years in the West as a cavalry officer but was court-martialed and dismissed from the service in 1882. He spent the rest of his long life attempting to clear his name.
Flipper’s record of accomplishment was significant for any individual in any time, and for a nineteenth-century black American it was phenomenal. As historian Quintard Taylor points out, in his post-Army career Flipper was a surveyor, cartographer, civil and mining engineer, interpreter, translator, historian, inventor, newspaper editor, special agent for the Justice Department, deputy U.S. mineral surveyor, aide to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and consultant to the secretary of the interior. His work carried him to Mexico, Venezuela, and Spain, and he left a record of achievement that demonstrates his enormous talent and unrelenting effort.
The Colored Cadet at West Point contains Taylor’s biographical essay, Flipper’s account of his career at West Point, and a new index prepared for this volume.

The following pages were written by request. They claim to give an accurate and impartial narrative of my four years' life while a cadet at West Point, as well as a general idea of the institution there. They are almost an exact transcription of notes taken at various times during those four years. Any inconsistencies, real or apparent, in my opinions or in the impressions made upon me, are due to the fact that they were made at different times at a place where the feelings of all were constantly undergoing material change.
Book Description
"An officer who was in his tent near by came out and ordered me to be put under guard in one of the guard tents, where I was kept until next morning, when I was put 'in arrest.' Wilson was taken to the hospital, where he stayed two or three weeks, and as soon as he returned to duty he was also placed in arrest. This was made the subject for a court-martial, and that court-martial will form the subject of my next communication.

Wilson was taken to the hospital, where he stayed two or three weeks, and as soon as he returned to duty he was also placed in arrest. This was made the subject for a court-martial, and that court-martial will form the subject of my next communication.
