Highly Entertaining & Amusing Book of Celebrity Anecdotes.......2007-02-28

This is a great book of anecdotes---amusing, informative and full of surprise and delight for a fan of history. Winston Churchill once called anecdotes "The Gleaming Toys of History" and I agree.
Author Brian Thomsen has captured a wonderful collection of modern celebrity and historical anecdotes that tell interesting and surprising facts of "the story behing the story" of famous people(ie.Joe DiMaggio), places (Ireland), and movies("It's a Wonderful Life"). His style is sharp and full of wit (dry and wet). The research is impressive.
I was especially pleased that the anecdotes are popular enough for me to tell before a wide spectrum of audiences. I give, on occassion, speeches and attend quite a few corporate dinners. This book allows me to spice up the conversation and inject interesting appropiate stories on these occasions. It has been said that "a person who can dominate a London dinner party can control the world"---this book may not allow you to control the world, but it will make your slice of it more interesting for your companions. I give this gem of a book a solid five star ranking

Some of it is "old hat" facts an educated person should have already known, some of it is "interesting gossip", and a small portion is new knowledge. It is a real "bathroom book". I have enjoyed it but probably would not give it as a gift.

In 246 pages, author Brian Thomsen debunks over 60 popular myths ranging from St. Patrick to the Bush Administration. Along the way the reader discovers that the Alamo wasn't necessarily a heroic last stand, that Abner Doubleday didn't invent baseball, that the 'Great Escape' wasn't so great, who Mario Puzo's real-life model for Don Corleone was and so on.

Light fare but fun reading.

There is More to Ponder.......2007-10-07

After reading The Awful Truth, I pondered if I wanted to be judgmental and write a review. Patrick J. Conway has extensively researched, but not throughly, a controversial compelling theory. Intrigued by his theory, I read provoking peaks of thought and read into discouraging valleys of judgement that was a distraction. I sensed a strong patriarchal bias, a tendency to generalize and to make bold assumptions. As is with many theories, more data points need to be researched and connected. The Awful Truth is extremely impactful and I respect Conway's passion for his belief.

I could not put this book down. Patrick Conway has opened my mind to the logic of creationism, Darwinism, the Bible, mythology and world history. This book should be added to the curriculum in high school, college and church bible study. I'm hoping for more from the author on these subjects.

Anyone who has read the bible or marveled at ancient civilizations should read this book. This is a radical look at historical records that makes a bold attempt to explain our origins.

He said what?.......2007-07-13

This is a confusing book. His writing is good and overall the book is easy to follow, but for me, having read many books on the same subject, and having arrived at certain other conclusions, Mr. Conway's theory lacks "something" to get me excited and wanting more. His book is full of facts and ideas I can agree with and interpretations which baffle me as he seems to be unaware of much other research. None of us can actually say what happened in various eras of history so we cannot grade his scholarship exactly, but for my money this man misses the mark. He raises one clear question I have not encountered before concerning the period around 70 A.D. and a few others but overall I am unable to go along with him. I would recommend the book to those who study this subject but as a secondary title. I do think this book has value for any bookshelf loaded with similar titles and research.

Doing research on MONSTERS? Start here........2003-02-19

Douglas knows his horrors (he's also Carlos Clarens, author of "An Illustrated History of Horror and Science Fiction Films")-- and this book lays out in detail the backgrounds and histories of the legends and myths concerning vampires, zombies, werewolves, mummies, and "creatures" such as Frankenstein's monster and the Golem. It's a bit florid in places (understandably) but chock-full of detail and surprising info on how our boogie men came to be. Hard to find, but worth tracking down if you're doing a paper on such things (try also books by David J. Skal in that case). Enjoyable and informative, especially for the young.

From its loud purple and orange cover to its innovative page layout and design, inspiration=ideas is stuffed with creative samples-posters, packaging, book jackets, logos, illustrations-inspirational photographs, honest advice, text and quotes. Inspiration=ideas is an essential reference for creative types-designers, art directors, illustrators, photographers and writers. Or anyone who has a care to be pushed and inspired.

A Must-Have for Creatives.......2002-10-26

I can't stand chain restaurants-TGI Friday's, Bennigan's, Applebee's, Olive Garden-they're all cut from the same tired rug. I bet, however, if I went to one of these establishments with Petrula Vrontikis that I would be overjoyed, eating up every bite of my shrimp fettuccine alfredo or potato skin appetizer.

I had the privilege, actually, of sharing a meal with Petrula-at a small uptown cafe-in Atlanta several weeks ago. She was visiting as a guest speaker at my school, The Portfolio Center, where I study graphic design. During her presentation, she showed her work and talked about her design career. She presented slides of her creative work, including restaurant identity design for Kozo Hasegawa of the Global Dining group in Tokyo. At lunch, she named several books (The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd; Made You Look by Stefan Sagmeister; Flatness is God by Ryan McGinness) that were must-haves for young designers, like me.

Weeks later, my classmates and I still talk about Petrula-and her inspirational book-both in and outside of school. That speaks to the type of woman that Petrula Vrontikis is-present, compassionate, caring, of-the-moment, not afraid. She designs with her whole self, pulling creative influence from unlikely sources-travel photographs, signage, international currency.

The pool of responses to the "ongoing sources of inspiration" question posed to each designer is fun. Take, for example, New York designer James Victore who shares "my heroes have always been cowboys," citing the music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson as ongoing sources of inspiration. Or design radical Stefan Sagmeister whose best situation for coming up with an idea is sitting on his roof at 5:30 A.M., sipping espresso, smoking a cigarette.

An intoxicating read, inspiration=ideas is frequently off my shelf and in my hands-right where it belongs.

It Fed My (Designer's) Soul.......2002-07-30

I had hurt my back earlier this summer, and read this book from cover to cover during my recovery. It was SUCH a treat, and there was so much more to it than your average design book.

The layout of the book is beautiful and innovative. Within the structure, the elements in each chapter would change colors or form to reflect the inspiration of the highlighted designer.

I think what is most appealing about this book is that it includes the spiritual and philisophical motivations behind the design process as viewed by these designers. It was a way to get to know some of these talented designers, and to realize that many of the things that motivate and inspire them, also stir my creative juices. It also enlightened me to the fact that everything we do that feeds our soul - whether it be spending time in nature, appreciating a disintigrating billboard, or listening to music we love, is fuel for our creativity.

No doubt, professionals will enjoy Petrula's book, but as an educator I'd especially recommend it to design students and young designers considering or entering the field. This breathtakingly beautiful volume, chocked with gorgeous images, is so simple and elegant in its structure, you can flip to any page, any name, and be moved, inspired, stimulated, and informed. The first half is like a window into the minds of your favorite designers, giving you a peek at what drives them to create and what is born of that drive. The last half of the book is a salvo of spectacular, superlative found images that will force you to raise your own bar. As the title says, inspiration equals ideas, and there is much inspiration to be gleaned from these pages.

This book is a good resource for those with some experience in the use of homeopathic remedies. It's definitely not the first book on homeopathy you should be reading, as it will not tell you how to take a case, choose the most appropriate remedy, select potency and repetitions, and recognize signs of a cure or partial cure as well as the signs of suppression or a noncurative aggravation. For an excellent introduction to veterinary homeopathy, check out books by Dr. Don Hamilton and Dr. Christopher Day.
Dr. Macleod's book lists some of the major remedies for a large variety of canine ailments (arranged according to body system) with a brief description of the symptom picture that would call for a particular remedy. Of course the list of remedies is not exhaustive and this book is not intended to substitute for looking up the remedies in a comprehensive materia medica.

Written by someone who was a great leader in the use of homeopathy with animals, there is no book written by any American author that can remotely compare with this one! I run a small, private feline sanctuary and this book has probably saved me THOUSANDS of dollars in vet bills.

This book should be used with caution........2001-02-10

This is a very detailed book for homeopathic remedies for cats. Each remedy is well described, but if you're serious about homeopathy you'll need a competent Materia Medica.

Moreover, the layout of the book follows an allopathic index, meaning by dis-ease and not by symptom. It may be useful to the novice but has nothing to do with classical homeopathy. I'd suggest you get Don Hamilton's book instead.

Unless you have already used homeopathy on yourself, I'd advise against using this book. Explore homeopathy in depth before using these on you cat.

BEWARE: This book describes the International Style of ballroom dance. NOT the American style. Perhaps 10% of American dance students are learning International.

EXAMPLE: THE WALTZ

American Waltz:
The basic figure is a square in which the man starts by stepping forward with the left foot and the dancers return to the starting position in 6 beats, making a square.

International Waltz:
The basic figure is a zig-zag. The man starts with the RIGHT foot and the dancers travel around the dance floor in a zig-zag pattern.

It would be great if Paul Bottomer would write a similar beautiful book for American ballroom dancers.

Many of the dances taught in this book are international style. If you plan to dance in the USA, you should know that social dancing is mainly American style for beginners.

The book is richly illustrated with photos. However, the angle of the photos changes randomly. So if you see a dance couple facing different directions in consecutive photos, maybe they have turned, or maybe the photographer moved. You have to read the accompanying text to tell.

I think this book is a good complement for beginning to advance-beginnning international dancers. You cannot completely rely on the book to learn techniques because while it does touches on them somewhat, it mostly concentrates on dance patterns. It will give you a rough idea of what a particular step looks like and give you the name of the step. If you have learned the step before, this would serve as a good review.

Can't learn how to dance from this book........2001-09-13

It's a good reference book if you know how to dance. If you're a beginner and try to learn from this book, you're in deep trouble. Unless you can translate "move you left foot to left, reflex your right knee, shift your weight on to the left on beat 3" description into movement right away, you'll go through one basic movement in hours. If you want to improve your dance skill, it may be helpful. Since I'm a total beginner, I can't say that for sure.

Good overview of ballroom dance.......2000-08-13

This book outlines most of the ballroom dances from a pictorial point of view with the assistance of footstep illustrations. Its virtue is it is pretty comprehensive, with most of the ballroom dances discussed. Even some dances considered a little risque, such as the lambada, are discussed in the book. No doubt that professional instructors will find areas of disagreement in the advice and the patterns developed, but no book can cover all the idiosyncrasies of styling that exist in ballroom classes. A good book to have when learning ballroom, and the price is very reasonable.

I was looking for a book on advanced techniques - this is NOT the book. She covers roller hockey, speed skating and other topics very briefly. The book is misnamed...........should read "In Line skating Activities".....

Advanced? Are you kidding? This book spends a lot of time about covering a broad range of topics - but none in depth. I was looking for a good book on techniques -- well this is NOT the one. It is very superfiscial and not worth buying. I found some "beginners" books with more info!

Interesting reading, but broad rather than deep........2001-03-26

This book covers fairly diverse inline areas- speed, hockey, fitness, etc and as a result does not delve too deeply into any one area. If you wish to pursue any one aspect of skating, I'd recommend finding something more specialised. For example, the two areas that I specifically wish to pursue, double push and stair riding, are not covered at all. I find it especially puzzling that stair riding could be missing from a book with this title.

Still, as broad skating book, it's quite interesting and does have some good stuff on stroke technique.

Useful for Basics........2006-12-30

Let me begin by saying I know very little about ballroom dancing, but like so many others, my wife and I have gotten somewhat interested thanks to the Dancing With the Stars craze that has become so popular. She has insisted that we take dance lessons and, not being one eager to embarrass myself publicly, I wanted to at least know some of the basics before going in. DANCE CLASS by Paul Bottomer seemed a good starting point.

The book is broken into three different styles of dance; club dances which include the tango, the salsa and even line dancing (yuck), International Latin-American Dances which include such dances as the mamba and the paso doble, and finally International Standard Partner Dances such as the waltz and foxtrot. The lessons of each dance begins with an historical overview of the dance, its origin, evolution and intended flavor.

For the sake of brevity, I will follow the outline of the Salsa. After the historical review is given, next you will find the Musical Count. This area is one of, what I feel are the books short comings. The rhythm is described quite well, but for me, the musical backdrop would have been better illustrated with simply giving me some popular song titles in that particular genre that I could reference to acquire the proper musical "feel". Again, I know very little about ballroom dancing, and some specific mucical scores would have helped.

Next, the basic moves of the Salsa are explained as well as the proper holds. In the specific case of the Salsa, seventeen varying Salsa moves are explained both verbally and with detailed photos. In some cases, though not all, as not with the Salsa, there are accompanying foot diagrams. These are not always easy to follow, but should have been included with every dance.

In summary, I'm not dissappointed with this book. It accomplished what I ment for it to and that is to move me to the next level where I feel comfortable enough to begin basic ballroom lessons, but there are some areas that could have been improved upon and there may be other books in this field that are superior to this one.

Good Read.......2005-08-19

This is overall, a good read. The book gave me a different perspective of J.C. Watts and resulted in more respect for the former Congressman. My only complaint is the numerous football analogies: too many. It became overkill after a while and I was annoyed by his constant references to the game. Other than that, I enjoyed reading the book.

Another example of dishonest conservatism.......2005-08-17

Watts, football player turned politician, indicates his obsession with racism and politics by trying to defend political conservatives as non-racist even when it's obvious that these were the same lunatics in both parties that allowed the racism wackiness to spiral out of control in the south back in the 1960s and still does today nationwide albeit more subtely. The only reason rural voters in his area ever kept the guy in office was because he was a corporate conservative who enjoyed the art of bait and switching voters on culture hot button issues such as guns and abortion all the while keeping the economic mess as silent as possible. Sorry Mr. Watts, but good conservatives would never have sucked up to your cultural bait and switch tricks if it weren't for political in-correctness. You know you're just a neoconservative radical and not a honest conservative and you're not fooling most African Americans anyway.

I think that this book is a great book but always keep an open mind

Congressman's Watts Ideology.......2005-06-13

This is a very good book. Congressman's Watts sets the record straight and doesn't care how or what the "Black" liberals think of him. This is a man who served his country and did it with dignity and aided all Americans in moving closer to a united front. Congressman J.C. Watts caught a lot of flak from the Democratic liberals especially the "Black" liberals, never the less Congressman Watts still strived to change the office of politics during his tenure and did infact make a difference for all Americans while he served his country. let the record show that I'm a Black American and I encourage all Black Americans to read Congressman's J.C. Watts book. You will definitely be inspired and motivated by Congressman's Watts Ideology.

Unbelievable Story!.......2004-07-20

This book changed my life and allowed me the courage to stand up for what I REALLY believe, despite popular opinion. JC Watts, Jr. is hugely courageous and open the doors for many conservative african americans who have elected to reject "victimization," and embrace true independence through education, hard-work, faith, and family.
