Seeking an eatery, or quotidian travel brochure information for a destination in California, Oregon, Washington, or Colorado? Then this is your book! Nearly 40% of the author's best American getaways are found in these 4 states alone. If, however, Pennsylvania, Tenessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, Indiana, Iowa, New Mexico, Nevada or one of eleven other states intrigue you, forget about it; you'll find a total of only three town listings in these 20 states combined. Useful weather data are provided, but otherwise the lack of geographical balance and unique insight left this reader rather disappointed.

Basic directory for weekends, weak for relocation.......2004-01-16

GREAT TOWNS has a solid selection of towns across America, with no obvious candidates missing. For each place you get an introductory paragraph which provides travel-brochure copy about why the town in question is interesting. There follows a weather chart (the author's own index about how likely mild weather is each month) and then a list of hotels and restaurants. These lists have minimal descriptions, making it hard to really get a feel for the options. And that's basically it.

Obviously it's hard to communicate what truly makes a Great Town 'tick' in a directory-style book. Telluride versus Vail among Rockies ski-towns? Very different flavors, but you'd hardly know it from GREAT TOWNS. I feel there is a distinct lack of critical opinion between the covers. As a result, web browsing is far more informative.

Interesting footnote: at the back is a scoring system to rate 'livability' for people considering moving. Towns that voted for Republican Presidential candidates get a 'good' score on politics.

The author includes dozens of towns from California and Oregon, but only four total from New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut combined. Many of the small towns in the northeast are the heart, soul, and heritage of America, but the author -- all of whose books except this one are guides to California and the west -- seems too distracted by gimmicky tourist and ski resort towns to notice.

Try a Great Town Trip!.......2001-10-31

In the bookstore, "Great Towns" had such instant appeal that I bought it, read it and immediately planned a "Great Towns" trip - up the coast of California. With Vokac's book in hand, I stayed in attractive B&Bs, ate in exceptional little restaurants, and generally got to know five very charming towns in my one-week journey. Anywhere you travel in the U.S., arrange to visit at least one "great town," and try Vokac's suggestions!

I just read Paula's review.. It is obvious that Paula was reading a different book than the rest of us! Loosen up Paula! Maybe you and Eleanor can visit some of these great towns together!

Loved this book. It is a great teaching tool in and out of the classroom. I really liked the mini quizes at the end of each section, and the beautiful colored illustrations bring the book to life.

Liz McQuiston takes on the world! She gives an excellent overview of protest graphics from every continent (even Antarctica!) and from a very diverse range of debates: democracy movements, debates over reproductive rights, the environment, counter culture, civil rights, AIDS and health awareness and feminism, among many others.

The book is very well designed and will bring back memories. Lots of great colour reproductions and a nice size and paper weight make it an aesthetic treat. It is also a valuable sourcebook for studies in visual culture. Check out the screaming red cover!

Examining a central change in European religious thought, this study investigates the changing roles of monks in society to help understand the reform of Christian ideology. It is based on extant monastic writings, including hagiography and polemics. The book explains the diversification of monasticism in this period as an outgrowth of a shift toward greater interest in lay religious life. Focusing on the German Empire, it examines monastic values in such areas as missionary work, public preaching, pilgrimage, and the polemics of the gregorian reform. In this unique study of the dramatic form, Oscar Lee Brownstein presents a personal analysis of the way in which experience is created by drama. A variety of plays are discussed and examined as perceptual objects, structures whose designs are entirely determined by the fact that they are meant to be perceived. Brownstein focuses on the distinct aspects of the dramatic art form and on its special powers to orchestrate the imagination and produce a personal encounter in the lives of spectators. In so doing, he provides a practical critical theory of drama that is sophisticated yet accessible. Approaching drama from a phenomenological perspective, Brownstein strives not to interpret the plays themselves, but rather his own perceptions and the sources that prompted them. Covering the wide history of Western drama from the Greeks to the present day, he treats in detail a small number of works that are readily familiar. He offers an extensive theoretical survey of the "perception shift" that infuses even the smallest element of a play, as well as those forces that are expressed through major dramatic strategies. Also addressed are the ways in which a single narrative sequence may serve all dramatic strategies. Some of the plays discussed include King Lear, A Streetcar Named Desire, Betrayal, Oedipus Rex, and Waiting for Godot. This work will be an important resource for students of dramaturgy, criticism, and dramatic theory, as well as for writers, directors, and actors involved in the dramatic arts.

Don't waste your money!.......1997-08-28

This is a teacher's aid for teaching a class on arts appreciation. It is full of blank pages (meant to be xeroxed, I guess) that students are required to fill out or attach to projects. There is also a syllabus, all kinds of acedemic rules about what the students are allowed to do (and not do!) for "art" projects, and lesson plans. If I was teaching the class, I wouldn't use this book because it's whole approach is so unfriendly and tied to the acedemic "grading" thing. I was really shocked and surprised to read that it is for a University level class!! The approach is so restrictive and dictatorial, I thought it was for Junior High kids
