Could be fresher.......2007-10-12

This book follows the familiar format of Frommer's publications. Graphics make for easy, "glanceable" readability. The authors get right to the point about what is worthwhile, and what is over-rated. However, I could not give a higher rating to this book. My impression is that this is a new edition of guide material that was first developed some years ago. It needs to be freshened up more. For example, for Seville, the authors note that all train service is "now centralized into the Estación Santa Justa." As I discovered from my own research, this modern train station was completed in 1991. Yet, not one of the maps provided of Seville give any indication of the location of this 16-year-old major train station. The maps show two other train stations (Estacion de Cadiz and Estacion de Cordoba), and this makes me wonder whether the publisher was simply using a very outdated map of Seville. Information on hotels gives scant details about the availability of internet connections. In some cases, the listing indicates "dataport." Does that mean dial-up access? In the year 2007, most travelers who need internet access require some form of high-speed internet access. Overall, I would not say that this guide is quite up to the usual Frommer standards.

Okay for Elementary School Children.......2006-01-22

This is good for elementary school children. It is written at a simplistic level with lots of big pictures and scattered with quizzes. You wouldn't be able to write a thorough report for it, but it provides some decent information on Egypt, Greece, Rome, Aztecs and Incas. Nothing about ancient Asia, Africa, or any other of the early foundations of society and civilization.

the book was an extremely interesting read, as it mentions things about her life that i did not know before. the pictures added an extra interesting part to the book as i feel the pictures tell you more about sonia than the actual writing. on all, the book was very interesting.

This is the best book on animal-human relations to come out since country vet James Herriot opened the field with his charming "All Things Bright and Beautiful" series. Naysayers of the bond between people and their pets should take a close look at all the new research coming out of medical schools on companion animals and how their owners live LONGER, happier, safer, healthier and more prosperous lives. The pets in our midst give us their unconditional love and we are better people because of it. Their devotion brings out the best in their owners. Don't miss this engaging and uplifting collection.

Heart Songs is a wonderful, heart-felt book!.......1999-09-29

Heart Songs For Animal Lovers weaves together a perfect mix of funny stories, including Hester Mundis' own hilarious account of raising both a chimpanzee and a German shepherd "with an attitude" in an apartment in Manhattan (which had me convulsed with laughter) and many other stories that brought me to tears.

Ron Van Warmer's unforgettable tale of Peewee and Black Jack, "The Oddest Couple In Town" managed to accomplish both.

There are also great quotes sprinkled throughout the book, from such diverse sources as Walt Whitman and Plato to Elizabeth Taylor.

I think any lover of animals will love this book, and I especially recommend it to anyone who is mourning the loss of a beloved pet. This book will raise your spirits and make you laugh and cry and not feel so alone. The last chapter, "In Loving Memory: Tributes, Epitaphs, and Eulogies" is especially moving.

It's a great comfort to read a book as heart-felt as Heart Songs, and to know that the world is filled with so many people who love and respect and care for animals.

A lively book about the lives we share with animals.......1999-09-15

I'm usually a reader of science fiction, and I tend to get stuck in the idea that meeting members of non-human species is something we'll do tomorrow, in the distant future. This book will remind you that we already share this planet with a whole community of other spieces...and that they have lessons to teach us about love, healing, compassion, humor, and coping with loss. Who knows? If aliens ever really arrive to meet us and read this book, they'll like us...but they may decide that the animals are Earth's real intelligent life. I plan to pass along copies of Heart Songs to family and friends who are dealing with illness, marital strife, and the imminent loss of loved ones, both human and animal. The book has something to say about all these things, and reminds us that we're never alone with our struggles in life as long as there are animals.

This is a gem of a book! Whether you're a pet owner or not, you're going to love this heartwarming collection of beautifully written, true life animal stories. It's quite moving to read of people's love for their pets and the devotion these animals give in return. I particularly like the way the author has chosen stories that range from heart breaking to outright hilarious. Plus there are dozens of short,snappy quotes and anecdotes about animals that can't help but make you laugh and think. Yet, it is never too cutesy or cloying.

The cover illustration is absolutely charming and perfectly sets the tone of the entire book. I heartily recommend it and plan on giving it as a gift to friends in the coming months. I just know they'll savor every page the way I did.

I can't say enough about this book and please, please, please, let there be a Heart Songs for Animal Lovers Part Two!!

A Truly Stupid Book.......2007-01-15

Designed completely to make you purchase goods from this pirate king of the autograph world, this book is amateu5rish and ingnorant. The author's father pioneer handbooks for tropical fish, ripped off people for their rare violins, and went to jail for income tax evasion; the son is well on his weay of following suit. All the illustrations are for sael, if you want to pay fifty times what you can buy a similar item selsewhere. His shop is in just the right place to sell Ameriucan history---Las Vegas---and his business is actually on the New York Stock Esxchange, which says more about the flaws in that institution's due dilligence, than it spoeaks to the reliability of the business. Avoid this at all cost; buy something by Rendell instead.

An incredible resource for all autograph collectors.......2001-06-24

Many people think of autograph collecting only in terms of writing fan letters to movie stars, but the fact is, the hobby offers an opportunity to hold history in your hands.

Owning a letter you know was written by an historical figure you admire -- when it is Abrham Lincoln, or Judy Garland -- is an incredible experience. But it is a hobby which should not be embarked upon without doing your homework.

This book is an excellent place to start. Starting with general information on what, where and how to collect, Rendell then examines collecting specialties from such as the American West, Presidents, WWII, Music, Science, etc. He gives specific and detailed information which will help you understand autographs and avoid buying fakes.

It contains hundreds of signature facsimiles, which are extremely important for comparison purposes.

Rendell is one of the most respected autograph dealers in the country and manages to be interesting as well as informative.

If you are looking for a practical book on deer, turkey, upland birds and other wildlife food plot management, this is the best of all the books I have read. The book is based on the use of affordable equipment, Biologic seed products and sound agricultural practice. I have increased deer activity and estimated that the turkey population has tripled in 1.5 years.
This is an excellent book at a low price.

Is this a book or a commercial for the foodplot industry???.......2003-08-11

I don't want to say I was disappointed with the book, but much of the information is too basic and can easily be found in greater detail in just about any magazine dealing with QDM. In reading the book I often felt like I was reading an advertisement for many of the companies now selling designer seed blends and other QDM tools.

The author is never critical of anything, be it a designer seed blend, a food plot tool, or a management practice, for example the PlotMaster the author recommends is only good for soil already turned by a plow or large disk, yet this is not mentioned. He would also have you believe that planting seed can be as simple as broadcasting it onto some properly limed and fertilized ground, then packed down with a heavy roller. Trust me, its not.

All things considered, I found the book a good read as a quick summary of food plot development, but by no means should it be considered a useful tool from which to develop appropriate food plot plans for your property.

Food Plots are Hot.......2003-06-12

Planting Food Plots for Deer and Other Wildlife is a well written comprehensive book on food plots for wildlife. John Weiss is a respected outdoor writer who touches on a variety of wildlife subjects in his treatment of creating food plots and habitat for wildlife.
The book is easy to follow and very informative and will be a welcome addition to the libraries of land owners with an interest in wildlife.
Weisses treatment of food plots covers planting practices in some depth and will provide much useful information to beginers. Dougherty and Dougherty's new book "Grow 'em Right" picks up where Weiss leaves off and offers more in depth information on hunting, habitat development and food plots but together they make a nice book package. Add Alsheimer's new Quality Deer Managment book to the mix and you have it all.

Good book for hunting land owners/manager.......2002-12-31

As someone who is new to managing a hunting property for personal use, I found John Weiss' book to be a very valuable resource. Lots of information on where to start, what deer and other wildlife prefer in terms of vegetation, and on where and how much to plant. The book is primarily designed for someone who has a mixed field/hardwood property and who has the ability to put in some serious time to improve the habitat. It is well written and interesting and chocked full of information - good value for the money.

This is a thorough, often riveting and eminently readable book about a trailblazer of American dance. A lively, affectionate and intimate portrait of this in every respect strongly gifted man who created the American Dance Theater. The dance critic and reporter of the New York Times, Jennifer Dunning has written a compelling book about this multifarious figure who wrote by himself a full chapter of American cultural history. For the first time, the life and work of Alvin Ailey, one of the most beloved figures in modern dance, is entertainingly told, taking into account the often adverse personal and social circumstances he had to contend with for the 58 years of his life. When Alvin was born in Southeast Texas in 1931, public facilities were segregated, white children went to school and black children picked cotton. Yet he managed to overcome these social handicaps because " he was tremendously bright-terribly intelligent-intuitive-sharp".
