Customer Reviews:
not a lot of new information.......2007-09-10
Authors' tone indicates they are clearly amazed by Washington DC, but this doesn't translate into any new or interesting information about the city for visitors. Lots of info out of date.
Excellent Book.......2006-11-10
I ordered this book to help plan a trip to Dc for my family. I was excellent. This book was also passed to our high school principal who used this book for a personnel trip to DC. This was his favorite book to use for learning about DC.
I found this book VERY valuable and will be used for future trips to the area.
Bad Metro advice.......2006-09-23
This guide may be good at highlighting attractions, but it's woefully impractical for real-life touring.
We used--or, I should say, tried to use--this guide on a recent trip to Washington, D.C., and we wound up very frustrated with it. We were attempting to do as much as we could by Metro and taking the car only when it was practical and necessary. We followed the guide for Metro stops and wound up walking, sometimes miles, with two young kids (aged 6 and 3).
For instance, we took the Metro to the zoo, got off at the stop recommended in the book and had an uphill walk for more than a mile. Someone told us later that there would have been ample parking, had we driven. I wish the guide had mentioned it. Another time, we followed the instructions on which Metro stop to use for the Lincoln Memorial. We popped out of the station onto a street filled with mainly government office buildings and no signs directing us to the memorial, which, again, was a long hike away. (A kind man saw our "lost" looks, asked if we were looking for the memorial and pointed the way there.) We found out from locals that it would have been better to have taken Metro stops along the Mall--possibly the same distance but with more diversions, like a carousel and grass to run around on, for youngsters.
This is not a trivial complaint when you're dealing with kids. And, given that this book is specifically about touring D.C. with kids, I would have expected the authors to do better.
By the time we were leaving, it had become a joke to consult the book's maps and station recommendations. We came to the conclusion that whatever it recommended, we should do something else.
Great Guide for touring D.C. with kids.......2006-05-24
I found that this book was an interesting and direct source of information that helped me to find places to visit as well as how to get there. It is a wealth of information for where to take kids of all ages that would be of interest to them in Washington, D.C. I found it helpful also to know the phone numbers to be able to call about questions that I might have before visiting the places. I would highly recommend this book to anyone such as teachers or parents who are interested in taking kids to the Washington,D.C. area.
A Survival Guide.......2006-05-20
While this is a great guide for parents, it is particularly helpful for those who may not have children at these ages. An Aunt, Grandmother, family friend who wants to spend time with children but doesn't know where to start and may not have a crew of friends with children needs this book. It can be the beginning of really great time with and for the children and adults together.

Customer Reviews:
Not so helpful.......2005-08-24
I was disappointed with this book. After reading many positive reviews I decided to buy it. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. First, it is not up to date. Several museums (most importantly the Children's Museum) either did not exist any more or were under renovation. Make sure to check individual attractions before relying on the book's info. Second, what I thought was missing was information about parking availability for each attraction. If you are driving, this is something you defintitely need to check. Third, information regarding restrooms and/or changing rooms would have been helpful since this is a book for families and young children. For example, there was no restroom in close vicinity to the Washington Monument and this would have been helpful to know. Finally, a map would have also been useful in order to plan an outing for the day. Although the book provides information regarding the closest Metro stop, it is difficult to map out a plan for getting from one place to another.
Just the facts, kids!.......2004-04-23
I was skeptical when I first saw this book. After all, it's pretty small. Yet on a recent family trip to DC, I used it more than the two others I bought. No hotel reviews, no Metro maps, this book simply tells you about 68 child-friendly spots to hit--one spot per page. I particularly liked the sidebars that clued you on places to eat near the attractions, like the inexpensive US Department of Agriculture cafeteria across the street from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and the fun facts. One omission, however, The International Spy Museum!
This is an okay pocket book.......2003-05-20
The book was just okay. Not much detail on the acctrations. I ordered it with Washington, D.C. with Kids 2002-2003. I used Around Washingtion with Kids as a guide and read more detailed information in Washington, D.C with Kids. The good thing is that is is small enough to throw in my backpack and bring along during my tour.
You'll Use it Over and Over Again.......2001-10-11
I purchased this for my Mother when she moved to the D.C. area so she'd have ideas of where to take the grandkids. Everytime we're there I see it out on a counter or on the nightstand. Aunts, Uncles, Cousins have all used to it while visiting. It's a great gift and a great reference. We've definitely gotten our money's worth!
Low-cost family fun!.......2000-07-14
What a help in planning low-cost, fun outings for our family! DC offers such great opportunities, but sometimes it seems too hard to organize a day together. This book helps enormously, with age suggestions for each activity, parking/public transportation information, and tips about all important food and bathroom locations. A must-have to make the most of the wonderful resources in our Nation's Capital!
Customer Reviews:
I was very impressed with this book.......2005-04-04
I'm not too familar with Usborne books because I only have three usborne books. I purchased this book at a homeschool convention. It was marked down in price. I was and am still very impressed at the amount of information it contains. Admittedly it is for older kids probably more for Jr high and high school. I might try a study of it when my son is in 6th but I'll have to see. I have read quite a bit of it myself and it seems very thorough.
Poor book.......2004-05-26
(...)In a nutshell... This book compares very poorly to the Usborne
history books covering earlier periods (my daughter and I love
those books). This book is only suitable for older children, since
they squeeze in a lot of text. What I really don't like is the
artibrary, idiosyncratic and often idiotic selection of what
events of the 20th century are "notable".

Customer Reviews:
Very Informative.......2006-02-02
This book has alot of information in it. Much of it seems geared toward people who are thinking about getting a golden or have a golden puppy, neither of which apply to me because my two goldens are 3 years old. I did learn a few new and interesting things from it and it was worth what I paid for it. For the new or prospective golden owner this book would be extremely helpful.
Great first book.......2004-02-23
I borrowed the local library's copy of this book an found a lot of good information on what I needed to know before I got my Golden puppy, and what to expect with age. For such a thin book it touched on a lot of good topics. It starts off with how the Golden was historically used to explain certain behaviors, and even has a list of questions to evaluate whether a Golden is really going to fit into your lifestyle. If you already have a Golden Retriever or are just thinking about getting one, I recommended at least reading this book.

Customer Reviews:
Best Rose Book Period!.......2007-04-09
I must have 30-40 books on Roses, and this is my very favorite! The practical approach to planting and growing roses, plus the realistic, yet beautiful photographs are just two of the reasons every rose grower MUST have this book among their collection. I especially enjoyed the landscaping listing of disease-resistant selections. Jeff Cox knows his roses!
Great book for rose information you can't find in other places.......2006-01-13
I love this book, and have found tons of inspiration in it. It's filled with ideas, technical answers, and beautiful photos. The book has tons information and is not just a glossary of popular roses.
The only drawback I found with this book is that almost all of the photos are of pink roses. I was hoping to find more photos of inspiring landscapes with yellow and red roses. However, that's only a minor detail, and all in all this book is fabulous. Highly recommended!
Practical and Useful.......2003-06-27
There are many books about roses but this is one of the better ones. Written by well-known garden host (HGTV and PBS) Jeff Cox, it is a beautiful yet practical book that delivers exactly what the title promises.
The first couple of hundred pages give you ideas for using roses in a whole range of different garden settings. The remainder explains how to buy, plant and care for roses. The advice is excellent for the novice or intermediate gardener. I give the writer full marks for not just providing a "directory of roses" - a cop-out all too often used to fill pages in garden books. Instead he shows how different types of roses can be used in the landscape.
The book has plenty of colour photographs showing roses used in different settings. I have to say that I was turned off by the hype on the cover. This is not a "ground-breaking book", the effects are not "dazzling" and as a guide it was useful rather than "inspirational". However, the writer has produced a practical, workman-like guide to effective landscape design using roses.
The book is well-designed and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who was thinkinf of incorporating roses into their garden.
Incorporate the rose bush into a variety of landscaping goal.......2002-05-07
This isn't your usual all-encompassing guide to rose varieties: instead it tells how to incorporate the rose bush into a variety of landscaping goals; from walkways and arbors to container gardening. Tips on choosing and growing the newer, hardier, low-maintenance breeds blend with those on how to arrange roses in conjunction with shrubs and other perennials for maximum effect.

Book Description
This volume deals with the trinitarian debate in early eighteenth-century England. Samuel Clarke's trinitarian thought represents a reappraisal of that doctrine in the light of early modern philosophy and close Patristic study. This work utilizes current studies on the fourth-century debate, recent evaluations of Latitudinarianism, and previously unpublished theological manuscripts of Sir Isaac Newton's, to shed light on Clarke's treatment of this central Christian doctrine. The conclusion calls for a reclassification of Clarke's thought by historians of doctrine. The volume is organized in three parts. The first examines Clarke's intellectual milieu, the second treats his use of sources, and the third evaluates his role in the Trinitarian controversy. Students of Latitudinarianism, the doctrine of the Trinity and Isaac Newton's thought will all profit from this discussion. In addition, those interested in the relationship between science and religion will benefit.
Book Description
Written for the dance novice, this book is a concise, thorough, and accurate history of all forms of dance. It gives a brief biography of many of the notable dancers and choreographers who have contributed to each form of dance, and provides, in a nutshell, the information needed to expand the enjoyment of performance. It also details the history of dance from its earliest beginnings and covers the intersection of dance and religion, social dance, ballet, modern dance, tap, jazz, film dance, and contemporary dance.
Customer Reviews:
Good text for dance appreciation class........2007-08-12
Achievable, comprehensive, well-paced. This is a small and affordable text which students enjoy, and is a good companion if you will be viewing many dance videos and movies in your course. The author gives questions for discussion, as well as an extensive list of suggested videos and movies. It works well with the PBS video series, Dancing.
Students noted that it would be more helpful if the discussion questions were inserted at the end of each chapter rather than at the end of the book, but not an insurmountale problem.

Written word about JC.......2002-12-25
This is an informative book for anyone interested in one of the jazz giants of all times. The book is of particular interest if first person narratives are to your liking since there are several sections with Trane talking about his music. For example, the interview for the Jazz Review in 1958 is as free flowing as the notes that blow through his horn. Also useful is an interview he did for a French magazine entitled Jazz Magazine where his international appeal comes forth. I also enjoyed the interview with Frank Kofsky where Trane explores topics such as Black Nationalism and the then current(60's) social and political relationship between music and politics. There are several sections taken from Downbeat Magazine and notable profiles by Ira Gitler, Ralph Gleason and Nat Hentoff. Although not limited to interviews the book also has various writers give the usual and unusual analysis of his music; there are recolllections from associates in the form of praise and critique. The other sections that deal with reviews of his concerts are interesting but not as riveting as the man in his own words. The breakdown of the recording periods is concise, factual and informative, as is in general the layout and organization of this book . Not intended as a biography this book does a good job of revealing Trane through the eyes of others as well as himself. Recommended for those wanting to go beyond the music; the man in his own words reveals the gentle giant of the saxophone.
Solid but a bit unfocused.......2001-02-03
This is a generally useful book for those interested in Coltrane's relatively brief life and musical career, although those already familiar with the saxophonist will find few surprises.
The book gathers together interviews, reminiscences, and critical commentary, as well as discographic and bibliographic references. Of the interviews, one of the best, for me, was a relatively brief one conducted with Bob Thiele, Coltrane's producer at Impulse Records. Thiele speaks in understated, yet moving tones of his relationship with Coltrane and makes clear the admiration he felt for the musician without being in the least bit sentimental. Joe Goldberg, a longtime admirer of Coltrane who became critical of the challenging material Coltrane produced late in his life, also offers a balanced view of the music. Peter Watrous's 1987 retrospective on Coltrane does a nice job of putting Coltrane's career in perspective and convincingly making the argument that Coltrane's music was as compelling 20 years after his death as it was when he was alive.
Another strength of the book are the sections that offer detailed information on each Coltrane release from the three major labels for which he recorded: Prestige, Atlantic and Impulse. Less useful, however, is the discography, which is a selected list. Why not just list everything?
Another weakness lies in the organization, or lack thereof. Sure, the book is divided into critical commentary, Coltrane in his own words, the releases, and so on. But some of the material is repetitive. Comments about his time with Monk, Miles, his practicing regimen, and so on crop up in the same language in different articles. Quotes and stories are recycled as well. Editor Woideck would have done well to consider a more thematic approach and to find some unifying thread that would better tie the material together.
Coltrane himself probably revealed why efforts to chronicle his life have been fairly difficult. As his musical stature and influence grew, he became less and less concerned with what was said about his music. He simply wanted people to listen. He was as sparing with his words as he was prolific with his notes. We're all probably best served by getting his music and listening rather than reading about him. Still, those of us who want to know as much as we can about his genius can find nuggets in books such as this.
Overview of a fascinating man.......2000-09-13
John Coltrane was a great musician, and a huge influence on the jazz music that followed him. This book does an excellent job of compliling interviews and articles that get his insights into the music, but more fascinating, into Coltrane as a person. Coltrane was a spiritual, intelligent and talented man, and both he and his music are sometimes misunderstood. This book lends insight into his goals and motivations. The book tends to get repetitive, however, as many of the same quotes come up time and again. Still, it is a sort of best of so there will be repitition, and has a great chronology and discography.
