This nifty box of 50 walking tours printed on cards takes the drudgery of using a big flat paper map & gives you info about the individual tour & suggests stops along the way.

That walk you show online is virtually impossible for any but the most
physically fit walkers - and, like others in the book you don't end up where you started.
On the other hand,virtually all of Adah Bakalinsky's walks in her book, "Stairways of San Francisco" bring the walker, via most interesting routes, back to the point of the walk's origin. Great to have your car or bicycle right there after the walk. The stories of the stairways and the neighborhoods are fascinating. Good walks and a good read.

walks aren't very interesting.......2006-02-07

I was disappointed with this product. The format is convenient, but the walks they recommend aren't real intersting. Most of the walks are very short (usually only a few blocks) and are mostly in the touristy edges of the city. I much prefer "Stairway Walks in San Francisco" which has longer walks (a few miles each) and focuses more on the more diverse interior of the city.

Scale Issue.......2005-11-23

Though there is no scale bar on the maps themselves, these decks come with an info card that explains that these maps ARE drawn to scale. Most cards are drawn at a scale where one inch equals a 1000 feet, and a few marked with white borders have scales where one inch equals 2600 feet.

This info is easy to miss if you don't read the explanatory card, but these maps are definitely easy to use once you have. Plus they are cute.

Wonderful BUT no info on Distance.......2005-10-16

I was born and raised in San Francisco and I am delighted and impressed with my recent purchase of the City Walk series for SF, however there is one major drawback. There is no way to judge the length of the walk. Not only is there no mention of distance, but the maps of the walks are not consistently to scale. Meaning the maps simply show the rout as it will fit on the card so an inch can be a block or a quarter of a mile and this is NOT indicated on the card.

In addition, the walks vary greatly in distance, some only a few blocks and some over 4 miles. This can be misleading if you were to try one walk and then another with out knowing and not preparing for a much longer walk. Also, I wanted to use the walks to "spice up" my exercise routine, it would be great to know how many miles to track my progress.

If you are planning on using this as a tourist guide as a new visitor there is some great information, including parking and bus information to the walks. However, just keep in mind the distance is in no way indicated on the map or under the difficulty rating. For example, two walks are rated "steep" one includes a steep street about a block long, another is a few miles trek up a very steep mountain.

If I was not familiar with the area I would never have known this until I set out for a walk and perhaps found it too long to manage. I only know the distance differences because I know the streets and trails referred to in this "book" (which is really a set of 50 cards with a map on one side and descriptions of the walks on the other.)

To Be a Princess.......2006-09-27

I have always loved reading about royalty, so naturally I enjoyed this book. It introduces you to the famous (and not so famous) princesses of the world. I only wish the authors went a bit deeper in the biographies. I noticed a striking resemblance in the facts mentioned in many princess biographies to facts mentioned in the Royal Diaries series. Coincidence? Perhaps. This is a nice book for younger children, with nice illustrations and pictures, but I find The Royal Diaries more engrossing and in-depth.

I had intended to read just one story a day in this fascinating book, but found it impossible to stop with just that one story. Brewster and Coulter write well and know their princesses. The writing just seems to fill the reader in on so many aspects of the princesses' lives. I can see this book enticing youngsters to want to read more about the young ladies in the stories. As an avid adult reader, I have read enough about the princesses to give me background and fill in some of the information left out. But for a young someone just discovering these people, their appetites would be whetted and I would think they would want to find other books to read. Definitely a fascinating book. The pictures are placed throughout the text in a reader-friendly fashion. My only qualm was the sentence in the last paragraph on Elizabeth and Margaret: "Queen Elizabeth still rules England." I don't know much about England's government, but I'm pretty sure the queen does not "rule" England. However, I'd still recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about the world's royalty. It was a fun and interesting read.

AWESOME GUIDE, but beware..........2007-01-05

Why beware? Well, Beijing is undergoing massive reconstruction in advance of the 2008 Olympics. I went to one location this guide mentioned, hoping to find the "Cool World CD Store" and instead found an open construction lot.

Snap.

Fortunately, the big places - The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, etc. - are still there, so you shouldn't miss those. The maps are superior and were the things I'd refer to most frequently there. They're strategically located on the endflaps, not buried in the pages of the book. If I ever go to Beijing again, I'll have this little travel bible by my side, you can be assured of that!

A little too compact, perhaps. . ........2006-08-21

Perhaps I have to chalk it up to my nearly-fifty-year-old eyes, but this guidebook is virtually impossible to use without a magnifying glass. Every time I read a review that harps point size I usually take it with the proverbial grain of salt, but this one really is very difficult to use. The maps of Beijing are even worse than the text, as the captions are printed in colors that do not stand out from the background. I thought this would be a nice little pocketbook to carry, that would fulfill both guidebook and map requirements, but in the latter case, it just isn't useful at all!
The guidebook itself is pretty concise, however, so that is a redeeming factor. A lot of the info seems to be imported from the LP China volume. I would just get that, plus a real map of Beijing. (And I have found that the Insight map of Beijing does not have any captions in Chinese characters. Maybe it was an older edition? I would think that is requisite for a city map to be at all useful!)

Great pocket resource.......2006-05-01

I used this many times when I visited Beijing. I lived in China for two years and visited Beijing five or six times and used this book most of those times. The maps are good, though with the rapid growth of the city they are limited. It is especially good if you don't have a lot of time and want to check out the highlights. I own several Best of and Condensed lonely planets and I love them.

A Pretty Good Travel Guide, Perhaps Too Condensed........2004-08-19

This is a pretty good travel guide. It might have been a little too condensed. I liked the slim form factor of the book. I personally would have preferred if it was a little bit larger and went into greater detail on some of the topics.

As opposed to the more complete Lonely Planet Beijing book, this book was published earlier this year. I would like to think that some of the information is more up to date as a result. It's simply too difficult to compare due to the fact that the book doesn't cover as many topics.

On the upside, like most Lonely Planet books, the graphics and pictures are awesome. I would have preferred a little more detail on the site map, but in general Lonely Planet does a nice job with their visuals.

On a whole, I would recommend this book to somebody who will soon be travelling to Beijing.

This books is a time capsule capturing life in an Indian fishing village on the Columbia River before The Dalles Dam was built, flooding Celilo Falls. The Celilo Indians have lived here for thousands of years and the village was once a thriving center of Indian trade routes. The book is a photographic essay with text giving a suprisingly detailed view of daily life on the magnificent falls, centering around the infant Linda and her family. Featured is the venerable Chief Tommy Thompson, an important historical figure in the region. Perhaps most touching is the fact that this book was written and published shortly before the dam was completed but no mention of this end to their way of life is mentioned. Instead, the book focuses on peaceful and loyal traditions of these people, from Chief Tommy Thompson's father greeting Lewis and Clark, to their service in World War II. The white people's thanks was to create the network of dams which changed the Columbia into a series of lakes, destroying the Falls and complete runs of native salmon they depended on.

This book is an alright quick read. Being that it's 100+ pages it only takes twenty minutes to read. You don't really get your $12.00 worth. It does have a few gigles in it though, especially if your fashion savy.

Entertaining but superficial.......2002-12-22

In the early eighties, this book was an agreeable addition to the more complete but older Lemmon biographies by Don Widener and Will Holtzman. It was entertaining, informative and filled the gaps between the mid-seventies (where the other biographies ended) and the early eighties when Lemmon had added films like "The China Syndrome" and "Missing" to his name. I could recommand this volume if it weren't for the fact, that Michael Freedland updated it this year ("Some like it cool"). It took this author twenty years to write a small, not very incisive chapter about the chemistry of Lemmon & Matthau and a few sentences about Lemmons alcohol problems, his face lift and his death. Don't expect any more details from his book. I have read very detailed and intimate star biographies lately, like Clark Gables biography by Warren G. Harris, or Burt Lancasters by Cate Buford. Those authors took their time. They interviewed friends and family. They looked over old newspaper articles and other sources. They did thorough research about the stars they wrote about. In short, thy did all the things that Michael Freedland should have done - but didn't.
