5 out of 5 stars Truly the Last Frontier.......2005-12-28

As a rural Alaskan in the Arctic, I think winter is a great time to publish the 29th edition of the Alaska Almanac. It can warm up even the coldest, darkest night with a mixture of facts about the 49th State, mixed in with biting barbs of wit from Mr.Whitekeys, a noted Alaskan humorist.

As a resident of Barrow, I was especially interested in learning at that our small town holds the record for least snowfall in a year ---only three inches in 1935-36. I think I just shoveled that off of our two Husky doghouses last week.

Also that Alaskans consume more ice cream than anywhere else in the country. You wouldn't believe the growing number of restaurants and stores selling all kinds of ice cream in Barrow these days --my favorite is soft chocolate waffle cones from Browers Cafe on the shores of the Arctic Ocean.

Meanwhile, Mr. Whitekeys notes that a certain soft drink has a national toll-free number for info and complaints, and that lots of Alaskans call during the winter --no complaints, they just want someone to talk to.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, as it were. Pick up a copy of the new Almanac and get ready for a warm evening of Alaska facts and fun.

Words of advice to those who plan, design, or edit newsletters from the author of Newsletter Design, Edward A. Hamilton. Follow the advice of this designer of world-renowned publications and your newsletter will never land in the junk-mail pile. You'll learn techniques used by the most successful publications to attract readers and rivet their attention. Included in this step-by-step guide: From selecting a name, logotype, and cover design to going on press, every element of producing a stand-out newsletter is explained step-by-step in clear language. In addition, the book introduces a twelve-part grid design that not only opens up new creative possibilities and relief from the standard three-column page, it works perfectly with computer coordinates. There's plenty of support for desktop publishers using WordPerfect, Lotus, Adobe, and Quark. You'll get tips for spicing up your pages with tables, charts, graphs, pictographs, and maps, using simple software programs. It's all here. From logotype to printed pages, you won't find a more readable, on-the-money guide to designing newsletters.

        5 out of 5 stars Useful.......2002-10-10

This book is very useful and I use it as a guide when producing newsletters for my campus. The author's tone is a bit high-handed but the information is invaluable. There are examples of styles and set-ups for very fine standard styles. Not anything cutting-edge in it, though. The author is thorough in language useage and styles. Lots of what not to dos in here.

3 out of 5 stars Really old book.......2002-09-04

This is a good book with lots of tried and true design tips, but if you're looking to redesign your newsletter and give it a "current" feel, be forwarned: this book is almost 10 years old, and the sample newsletters they feature show it. I think it's a good book, but given its age it should be cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for Designing a Polished Newsletter.......1998-08-23

With this book plus "Producing a First-Class Newsletter" By Barbara A. Fanson, I learned everything I needed to know to produce a very polished redesign of the monthly newsletter for my company's customers. Well worth the money.

        3 out of 5 stars It's all relative--.......2005-06-05

I've recently read this book, and I agree that this is a good back-up, but shouldn't be your only source of information. When I was in the 4-H Rabbit Club as a kid, we focused more on the ARBA standards and breeding. Then, the preferred methods of raising rabbits were similar to those recommended in this book (handling, diet, etc.). It should be taken into consideration when reading it that *it was written in 1991*. The book is 14 years old--times have changed.

I wish that this book would have been brought up to date, or that someone would write a new book solely dedicated to training your rabbit. This is one of the reasons that this book has value, despite its age and a few factual errors: there just aren't any other books out there entirely dedicated to the subject.

If you want some great information on rabbits, read The House Rabbit Handbook by Marinell Harriman, which has been revised this year--and visit Rabbit.org

There is a new book called The Rabbit Whisperer by Ingrid Tarrant (currently available only in the UK) that I hope tackles this subject for the more "advanced" rabbit-person. Otherwise, to somebody out there willing: Please re-write this book!!

1 out of 5 stars One word: Misguiding........2003-12-04

I've been a house rabbit owner for around 4 years now, and I'm part of a couple local rescues, along with the House Rabbit Society. I decided to read this book just to see how it held up to the information I know about rabbits, which has been given to me by the HRS (www.rabbit.org), other house rabbit owners, biologists, and rabbit-savvy veterinarians. Sorry to say, the book ranks poorly in my mind, and I'm sure in many other house rabbit owner's minds. Here are some of my reasons for disliking this book to so much extent:

-The methods in which she "trains" her rabbit practically have a boot camp air to them.

-Advocates scruffing a rabbit, which is definitely not a safe way to pick him/her up (rabbit's skin is very thin and can tear easily).

-Also advocates keeping rabbits on wire-bottomed cages. This, like mentioned in the chapter written by a veterinarian, causes sore hocks in most rabbits. Wire flooring in a cage can also cause arthritis and can rip off toenails.

-Deems rabbits as "dumb" before "properly trained." An animal is never, ever dumb. The only way they can be perceived in this light is if the person calling them that is completely uncompassionate towards animals in general.

-Even the chapter written by the, supposedly, rabbit-savvy veterinarian is chocked full of incorrect information. She states that pellets should be the main staple in the diet, when in actuality, timothy hay should be, followed by fresh greens, and very limited pellets.

-There's typos in the book, making it seem a great deal less professional.

This book is definitely not worth reading, whether you're just starting out, or you're a rabbit enthusiast. If you're looking for books to learn more about house rabbits, check out the House Rabbit Handbook by Marinell Harriman, along with Stories Rabbits Tell by Susan E. Davis & Margo DeMello.

        3 out of 5 stars A Good Backup Resource.......2003-10-09

HOP TO IT is a compact book on rabbit care written by a woman who obviously and unashamedly loves rabbits. Much of the information in the book is based on her experiences with rabbits as pets and it does have some helpful information based on lessons she has learned the hard way. Her stories about her own pet rabbits as well as the rabbits of friends are helpful, and in some cases amusing. It has helped me understated some rabbit quirks which is, of course, important. I would not recommend this book as a primary care manual for rabbits, but rather as a supplement to a book such as WHY DOES MY RABBIT? by Anne McBride or THE HOUSE RABBIT HANDBOOK, both of which are chock full of helpful information and seem to have veterinary expertise.

1 out of 5 stars You could find a better book........2002-08-17

The book is very easy to read and has some practical advice.

However, some of the advice doesn't seem right. For instance, she advocates de-clawing a rabbit. How inhumane! Also, the parts about walking the rabbit outside on a leash. Just putting a leash on a rabbit: no wonder she had him declawed. The advice about giving the rabbit commands doesn't jive with the way trainers teach other animals. They say to use one word commands only. Her commands have 2-4 words.

Pictures of her husband cleaning the cage in the living room were a little humorous. I liked the part about Mr. Rabbit coming to inspect the clean cage. Mine does that.

2 out of 5 stars Hop to It.......2002-04-02

This book was written in 1991. Much of the very important information regarding nutrition, health concerns and treatments and how to appropriately pick up a rabbit is out of date. Nutrition section is especially alarming. Some sections, such as traveling and working with an aggressive bunny are good.
Overall, I would recommend a more recent rabbit care manual.

Serious collectors will find a wealth of information to identify the age, maker, history, and value of numerous pieces of equipment. The historian will find a trove of new research and original source documents including early patent drawings, advertisements, and more.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best, most useful book on the subject.......2000-11-11

It's more than a collector's guide. It's more than a reference work. It's a comprehensive, thorough, meticulously researched historical chronicle of the evolution of law enforcement in America, as enabled by and resulting from the technological advances made in the equipment available to police officers.

Utilising the archives of the United States Patent Office, the custodian of inventive progress, author Matthew G. Forte has compiled and assembled an orderly, systematic record, divided into logical categories, of the development of the devices upon which police relied on a daily basis. The categories include billy clubs and night-sticks, handcuffs, mechanical nippers, chain nippers, rattles and lanterns. Beginning with illuminating and informative comments, explanations and observations, each chapter reproduces an abundance of, including the more and most important, actual patent design drawings, as well as reprints from period catalogues.

This fully indexed book also contains a fine section of representative photographs of many items from each category. Printed on thick gloss stock, the quality of the illustrations is superb, as is the literary quality of the written text.

"American Police Collectibles" is as immensely interesting as it is an essential resource tool. It stands as the definitive work of its kind, by one of the leading experts, if not the leading expert, in this fascinating field.

As knowledge of inland water Copepoda Crustacea of the world becomes more refined, revisions of taxonomic groups have sometimes lead to major modifications in defining the species and genera. New criteria and fixed microcharacters are also used. In order to make better use of the old works and to reduce the "currents" errors to a minimum, a catalogue of the presently known species and subspecies was clearly needed. The authors previously attempted an approach of this type regarding freshwater Calanoids (1983) and Cyclopoids (1985). In this volume they present the Harpacticoid group which is the last of those studied in inland waters of the world. This catalogue is considered up to date as of December 1987.

Encompassing ballet, South Asian and modern dance forms, this book provides exciting new research on topics as diverse as: br --The Victorian Music Hall br --Film musicals and popular music videos br --The impact of Neoclassical fashion on ballet br --Women's influence on early modern dance br --Methods of dance reconstruction br Featuring work by some of the major voices in dance writing and discourse, this unique anthology will prove invaluable for both scholars and practitioners, and a source of interest for anyone who is fascinated by dance's rich and multi-layered history.

I purchased Fodor's and Lonely Planet's Costa Rica Guides.
Fodor's is easier to use - it isn't boringly laborious to read. The layout and reader-friendly format makes it a pleasure both to scan and to read at lentgth when subtexts catch one's interest. This is the book we'll take with us to Costa Rica.

2 out of 5 stars Not a whole lot of information in this book.......2005-07-21

While I found the reviews to be accurate, this book does not have a whole lot of selections compared to other books like Lonley Planet.

4 out of 5 stars Accurate and fun to read.......2005-04-10

Much of my travel experience has relied on the Lonely Planet guides, or the "Let's Go" series. Much to my surprise, my wife and I recently went to Costa Rica and found Fodor's to be perfect. The descriptions of the hotels, the culture, and the attractions were right in line with our experience. It is possible that we were wearing "Fodor-colored glasses." Regardless, we found it to be a wonderful book and well worth the cost.

Terrific guide book! I also found the book "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made," to be a wonderful companion piece.

This is the excellent book for everyone who wants to study statistics using SPSS software. Easy to read, very friendly, lots of examples and explanations. Wonderful sense of humor (can you believe it in a book on statistics?). I recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Simple overview of stats and how to use the software.......2004-01-18

SPSS is a popular software package used by graduate students in the social sciences, since it's a user-friendly software unlike some of the more complicated packages like SAS or Minitab that require programming language and a very sound understanding of statistics before you use them.

This guide is a basic guide to data analysis, and how to do this in SPSS. In fact, I would almost say that it is over simplified - almost all of these analyses can be done in Excel - except that it's not as easy to do it in Excel as it is in SPSS. Although SPSS itself may be somewhat simple compared to other stats software, the guide itself is marvelous.

The guide not only takes you through the steps of "how to" use the software package SPPS, but it also explains why you would want to run a particular analysis and how to interpret the results. It then goes on to explain how to modify those results or analysis according to your preferences.

For those people wishing to run more complex models, such as multiple regression, it is probably recommended that you know the statistical theory behind it, or are taking a class on it, rather than try to do this simply by using the guide, in order to make sure that you achieve a full understanding of the results. Because SPSS is so easy to use, it's easy to fall into the trap of having it run an analysis that is not so easy to interpret.

However, for people who are using SPSS as part of a course, this guide is absolutely great and I highly recommend it for any SPSS users, since the help function in SPSS itself is virtually useless.

                    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2003-11-06

This book leads you step by step to understand the statistics very well

4 out of 5 stars Good for converting theory to SPSS mechanics.......2003-05-21

I've found this book extremely helpful in understanding how to set up the kinds of analysis in SPSS that I want to conduct. I have the theoretical understanding to design the experiment and know what analyses need to be conducted (and could do it by hand if I had to), but this books helps me understand how to efficiently analyze my data within the program itself. Of related books I have looked at, this is the best. The one drawback is that it is designed as a classroom tool with exercises and learning points and not for the professional user. That space could be used for more information and explanation.

                    1 out of 5 stars A very passive educator/author.......2003-02-26

...This book should be labeled as a School or Classroom Edition and should not be sold publicly because it needs an instructor to guide you. The questions at the end of every chapter carry only a few answers to refer to. The author is not much help either and was so passive when I requested to be referred to the full answers to the questions saying that the reference for this is only for the instructors teaching the course.

Individuals intending to buy this book for self-learning should think twice. ...

After borrowing this book from a friend, I decided to purchaseone for my own. It's one of the few books I've been able to locatethat focuses on preparing for a happy union between pets and babies and actually provides detailed suggestions. I've always heard that many pets that are used to being the "babies" in the family don't take well to new human babies, so this is a helpful guide for creating some harmony among all. Regardless of which comes first (baby or pet), I found it useful and easy to read.

This is a bright, gorgeously designed book with vivid color photos and charming illustrations. A worthwhile addition to your collection if you already have some knowledge or experience with container gardening, however it lacks depth on certain matters and concepts. For example, as someone who has little experience with composting, I would have preferred a more fleshed-out description or step-by-step instructions. Also, the author lists some of the problems and pests each plant might face, but only offers a sentence or two about how to prevent or eradicate them. Still, I found the short blurbs on each type of plant helpful, right down to which exact hybrids grow best in pots and what kind of yield to expect. This is the first container gardening book I've come across to include potted trees, although I was a little disappointed to find no citrus plants were included. The recipes included sound delicious, but many are dairy-intensive, using sour and heavy creams, so I doubt I'll make use of them. Overall, I found Kitchen Harvest a quick and enjoyable read and it spurred my excitement about gardening on into the fall and next year.

                            Book Description

A charismatic stage and screen actress. A model whose beauty inspired some of the most arresting images of the twentieth century. A visionary photographer. A revolutionary with deep commitments to communism. A woman whose life, loves, and death were controversial. Tina Modotti (1896-1942) was all of these. Her life was one of almost unimaginable glamor, scandal, and turmoil. This biography portrays Modotti accurately and fairly, cutting through the distortions of myth and rumor that surround her. Perhaps best known as the lover, model, and apprentice of American photographer Edward Weston, Modotti emerges in these pages as a complex woman, deeply passionate in her relationships as well as her art and politics.

Historian Letizia Argenteri examines an array of international historical documents and letters as she traces the path of Modotti's life and career through Italy, California, Mexico, Germany, Moscow, and Spain. Argenteri tells the dramatic story in full detail, casting light on the mysteries of Modotti's life and carefully placing her in the political and social milieu of her time. The many fascinating illustrations in this book further illuminate Modotti's life.

                                Book Description

Henry Oldenburg, born in 1619 in Bremen, Germany, first came to England as a diplomat on a mission to see Oliver Cromwell. He stayed on in England and in 1662 became the Secretary of the Royal Society, and its best known member to the entire learned world of his time. Through his extensive correspondence, now published, he disseminated the Society's ideals and methods at home and abroad. He fostered and encouraged the talents of many scientists later to be far more famous than he, including Newton, Flamsteed, Malpighi, and Leeuwenhoek with whom, as with many others, he developed real friendship. He founded and edited the Philosophical Transactions, the world's oldest scientific journal. His career sheds new light on the intellectual world of his time, especially its scientific aspects, and on the development of the Royal Society; his private life expands our knowledge of social mobility, the urban society, and the religious views of his time.
