Luxe books, Beijing, Luxe book Shanghai, Luxe book Hong Kong.......2006-11-05
These books were great because they were small and easy to carry! The stores I found they suggested were very good. I gave the Shanghai book to our private guide because she really thought the book was great. She wasn't even aware of some of the shops or restaurants in it. It was fun to read and very good information. In Beijing I bought Pearls at the shop that was suggested after looking at several places. In Hong Kong the Stanley Market was very confusing and this helped us out a lot! I have already passed Beijing on to a friend for their trip.
Hip Guide.......2006-05-14
I used this during a recent trip to Shanghai and was really happy to have it with me. It directed me to all the "happening" places - to shop, eat, drink, see art, etc. It is a small fold out pamphlet, not a book - and well worth the price. While it is geared to the hip and trendy young woman, as a 58 year old interested in that side of Shanghai, I found lots of great tips (once I enlarged the really, really tiny type). I also used the guide to Beijing.
Book Description
Interior Design magazine says that The ABC's of the Bauhaus is, "a collection of visually and intellectually stimulating essays about basic design courses at the Bauhaus, Froebel toys, inflation in the Weimar Republic, the typography of Herbert Bayer, Psychoanalysis, and fractal geometry. A fascinating fantasia on an elementary theme."
And Elysabeth Yates Burns McKee, from Design Book Review says that "perhaps the most successful aspect of The ABC's is its ability to elucidate complex and fundamental theroetical aspects of the Bauhaus program."

BAUHAUS FUNDAMENTALS.......2000-05-06
This thin volume is a wonderful collection of essays on the typography, design and graphic design of this school that can be considered the heralding in of moderism.
The layout of the book, sparse and clean, was designed by the editors, Joanne Savio and Mike Mills in a manner that adheres to Bauhaus design principles. Well illustrated throughout with examples of the works of Bauhaus artists, the book is a pleasure to look as well as to read.

About the Noah's Wish Investigation.......2007-06-05
This is in response to the post about Terry Crisp's organization being investigated by California's Attorney General's office. This is what's posted on her website:
Noah's Wish Board of Directors, March 26, 2007
We are writing to inform you that Noah's Wish is in the midst of an ongoing civil investigation by the California Attorney General's office concerning funds received by Noah's Wish during Hurricane Katrina. The California Attorney General has taken the position that certain funds donated to Noah's Wish during this period, and its immediate aftermath, are restricted and may only be used for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina, rather than the animal victims of other disasters or for general disaster preparedness. Noah's Wish disagrees with the Attorney General's position with respect to those funds, but is working cooperatively with the Attorney General toward a timely resolution of the dispute.
In response to the California Attorney General, Noah's Wish has set aside the disputed funds and agreed not to use those funds pending final resolution of the investigation. Noah's Wish is unable to predict when the matter will be resolved. Because Noah's Wish does not presently have access to the disputed funds, it is unable at this time to continue with its efforts to provide disaster preparedness services and volunteer training.
We will provide you with an update once we have resolved this matter.
We appreciate your patience and also wish to express our gratitude for all that you have done to support Noah's Wish in carrying out our charitable mission.

State probe forces animal-rescue nonprofit to close
Queries $8M raised in wake of Katrina
Sacramento Business Journal - March 30, 2007
by Kelly Johnson
Staff Writer
A local animal-rescue nonprofit that gained national attention for its work after Hurricane Katrina, sparking more than $8 million in donations, was shutting down this month amid a state investigation into how it used that money.
Noah's Wish, which rescues and cares for animals in disasters, was preparing this week to close its El Dorado Hills headquarters. About a dozen workers have resigned or been laid off since late last year.
The California Attorney General's Office has been investigating the organization since last summer, examining how Noah's Wish used donations that might have been designated for relief efforts in the hurricane-ravaged area. The probe led to most of the nonprofit's funds being set aside in accounts where they couldn't be used for other operations.
The nonprofit contends the funds were used properly and said it is cooperating with investigators.
The group received millions in donations after news stories showed its efforts in an area devastated by the August 2005 hurricane. Former Noah's Wish insiders allege those millions were intended to relieve suffering in the storm-battered zone but were improperly used for other purposes.
According to documents obtained by the Business Journal from a former employee, an accounting firm hired by Noah's Wish to examine its books concluded that it would be impossible to conduct a reliable audit because so many records were missing from the period when the group and its volunteers were working on the ravaged Gulf Coast.
Documents filed by the nonprofit or provided by the former employee indicated Noah's Wish had about $210,000 in revenue in the year ended June 30, 2005, and almost 40 times that much -- $8.4 million -- in the next six months.
Expenses shot upward, too, from about $212,000 in 2004-2005 to more than $2 million in the last six months of 2005, including almost $400,000 to purchase vehicles. In early 2006, the group bought a storage building in East Alton, Ill., for $65,125 and leased office space in New York City, according to documents provided by the former employee.
Terri Crisp, founder of the group and its executive director until this week, was paid $6,200 in 2004-2005, tax records show. The documents supplied by the former employee covering July through December 2005 indicated Crisp received compensation of almost $141,000.
The nonprofit's board this week acknowledged the investigation on the group's Web site. "The California Attorney General has taken the position that certain funds donated to Noah's Wish during this period (of Katrina), and its immediate aftermath, are restricted and may only be used for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina, rather than the animal victims of other disasters or for general disaster preparedness," a letter posted online said. "Noah's Wish disagrees ... but is working cooperatively with the Attorney General toward a timely resolution of the dispute."
Noah's Wish has agreed not to use the disputed funds while the investigation is pending, and the nonprofit cannot continue its work without access to the money, the letter said.
A spokesman for the state's top lawyer would not confirm or deny an investigation.
Ralph Nevis of Downey Brand Attorneys LLP in Sacramento, who represents the group, would not discuss the nature of the inquiry.
Founder was asked to leave board
Staff members are being paid through April 11, but this week only the office manager remained at the El Dorado Hills headquarters to close things down over the next couple of weeks.
At one point, the nonprofit had 15 employees working at offices in El Dorado Hills and New York City and from homes in other states. The three-person office in New York closed in January.
"They've reduced the staff because of funding. It's everybody," Crisp said Wednesday. She said she's taking her remaining days as sick leave, but by Wednesday evening a message on the group's Web site said she was no longer connected with Noah's Wish.
Crisp also served on the organization's board of directors from its founding in 2002 until February. She's no longer on the board, she said, "partly because it's a conflict of interest." The Attorney General's office "had asked for me not to remain on the board."
Because she's no longer on the board, Crisp said she did not have the latest information on the investigation or details about what it covers. Investigators, she said, have not interviewed her and were working only through the nonprofit's attorney and its board chair, Amy Maher.
Maher did not return calls Wednesday. Board members Lyn Kendrick, Gail Monick and David Lesser declined to comment on the investigation; another, Heather Hathaway, did not respond to a request for an interview.
Asked about allegations that the nonprofit inappropriately used money, Crisp said, "I don't know of any misuse of funds."
Lori Polk, chair of the Noah's Wish board during Katrina, left it the month after the hurricane. Before and after Katrina, she said, she voiced concerns about "the organization and the allocations of the donations we were collecting." She said she felt she was "fighting a losing battle trying to maintain my fiduciary responsibility to the organization."
The group "did not make decisions based upon board approval," she said, and made "expenditures without approval."
The former employee, who would only speak on condition of anonymity, said that "the amount of money that was spent by the organization was unbelievable."
The Attorney General's authority over charities includes investigating the loss of substantial funds during one year, illegal use of funds, diversion of funds from their intended purpose and excessive amounts paid for salaries, benefits, travel, entertainment, legal and other professional fees, according to the agency's Web site.
Raising money last month
Noah's Wish was soliciting funds as recently as February. In a letter to potential donors, Crisp wrote the nonprofit had "made a concerted effort to only ask for donations when the need truly exists, and not become a pest with repeated appeals."
Later, the letter said, "So why am I contacting you now? Noah's Wish is prepared for the next disaster, but lately this has become increasingly challenging." Because 2006 was a "fairly uneventful year," Crisp wrote, donations declined significantly.
Tax documents for Noah's Wish obtained by the Business Journal reported revenue of $8.4 million, almost all of it from contributions, between July 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2005. Some $4.8 million was in unrestricted assets and $1.5 million in temporarily restricted assets at the end of that year, financial documents indicate.
In June 2006, the accounting firm engaged to audit the books wrote the board that it could not express an opinion on the 2005 financial statements, according to documents provided by the former employee.
"A significant portion of corroborating evidence such as vendor invoices, receipts, deposit slips and other supporting data were not maintained during the period that the organization was responding to the needs of animals during Hurricane Katrina. The records that remain are not sufficient to permit the application of auditing procedures that would be adequate for us to express an opinion on the accompanying financial statements," according to the letter from John Waddell & Co. CPAs.
For the second half of 2005, Noah's Wish paid $405,948 in salaries and compensation, according to the Form 990 supplied by the former employee. Of that, Crisp received $140,900, while the second-highest compensation went to Sheri Thompson at $118,125, the tax documents show.
If the numbers are correct, it appears the compensation for Crisp and Thompson is well above the norm for nonprofits of this size, said Ann Lucas, executive director of the Nonprofit Resource Center. The annual median base salary for the executive director of a nonprofit of this size is $130,000, according to the 2006 Compensation and Benefits Survey of Northern California Nonprofit Organizations, which is produced by the Center for Nonprofit Management in Los Angeles.
Noah's Wish committed $1 million to the city of Slidell, La. for construction of a new animal control center; the old one was severely damaged by Katrina. The city has not received any of those funds, Slidell City Attorney Tim Mathison said.
Okay.......2007-02-17
I thought it was an okay book, but as I was reading, I found myself skipping through all the blah blah blah to get to the actual animal stories. The stories about the animals were great, but you have to wade through a lot to get to them.
FOR THOSE WHO'VE WONDERED.......2007-01-20
Terri Crisp has been in the forefront of animal rescue for many years, and her gripping accounts of freeing animals caught in disasters make for compelling reading. All of us who love animals and who have ever wondered what it's really like to work in disaster relief will enjoy this book and be informed by it. A wonderful addition to the library of anyone who is interested in animals, animal rescue, and disaster relief work.
One Person.......2006-10-10
'Mom, do you have any good books I can read? Maybe one about animals?' I asked my mom one day when I was bored. When my mom handed me this book, about a year ago, I didn't know what to expect. I read the first chapter and was hooked. The author is so dedicated to animals and has experienced so much, it's hard to put the book down. I think it only took me a few days to read it and I just finished reading it for a second time. This is a book that makes you want to go and make a difference in the world. It makes you realize how much the news doesn't talk about animals in a disaster. When I graduate collage, I want to become an animal disaster volunteer. Right now I'm only 14 so I have a few years but, while I wait it's nice to know there are people like Terri Crisp making a difference in the animal world. Before I read this book I didn't think I could make much of a differance, after reading this book, I've learned how much of a difference one person can make.

Book Description
Botanica's RosesR will prove to be one of the greatest rose books of all time.
Customer Reviews:
A bouquet of roses.......2007-01-21
This book is worth owning for the photography alone! I own the Australian version (with the relevant 'hardiness zone map') and I recommend that any buyer of this book check the edition they are buying to ensure it is relevant to their location. While most experienced rose growers will have some idea of what will grow where, those seeking to establish roses for the first time will certainly find a relevant locality guide useful.
Roses are beautiful flowers and the plants themselves are fairly drought tolerant: an important consideration for those of us living with ongoing water restrictions.
I bought this book for the photographs as much for the information it contains. Other books will provide rose gardeners with more specialised information. But this is the book to turn to if glorious colour photographs inspire you.
The size and format of the book makes it more a coffee table book than an everyday guide.
If you like roses, you'll love these photographs.
Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Beautiful, Extensive, and Exhaustive.......2005-02-02
At one level it is a coffee table book. Its large format, heavy glossy white paper, and crisp photography all put it up there with the best gardening 'picture books.' At another level it is a reference. Only Modern Roses has more entries - but it costs much more and has few if any photos. And it is the photos that make this book a great one. It may be the best single source of rose photos one can get at any price.
The entries are spare, but there is very little crucial information missing. Virtually every entry indicates whether the rose is vigorous and which diseases it is prone to suffer. When roses fare better in one climate than another, Botanica tells you so. If a rose has fragrance, it says so. If a rose is spindly and lacks adequate foliage or branching, it will usually be indicated in the entry.
The entries have been scrubbed clean of personal bias as one would expect of a good reference. Unfortunately, it is a rosarian's personal connection with a rose that really makes reading about roses fun. Thus, most people who like to read about roses will find Graham Stuart Thomas' Book on roses more engaging, despite the comparative lack of photographs. Most will also find Stirling Macoboy's Ultimate Rose Book more engaging for the same reason. Even Claire Martin's 100 Old Roses and 100 English Roses have a litte more zing.
My interest in growing roses started around the time I picked up The Ultimate Rose Book. And it's still a good one to consider. It may be the closest thing to this book; but the photography in Botanica's roses is more accurate, more colorful, and far more exhaustive.
If one has to choose the first book to get when starting down the path of growing and enjoying roses, this might be the best.
Botanic's Roses The Encyclopedia of Roses.......2003-02-13
It is a beautiful book and if that is what you are looking for this is a great book. However, Amazon forgot to mention this is for Canada. Page 21 displays temperate zones for (CANADA ONLY). Again Page 21 "Zones 9-12 do not occur in Canada"? Many roses in this book are zones 9 and above---what is the temperature of 9 and above????? I live in the USA. ... Its still a beautiful book. Amazon should have made it clear it is a wonderful Canadian Book.
Botanica's Roses.......2003-02-13
I looked at the reviews and they where excellent. I bought the book and it has wonderful pictures. However, nobody mentioned that it is for Canada. It has a wonderful picture of Canada and its temperature zones . The difficulty is I live in United States of America. The book is for Canada period. Yes, it is a nice book, but it has to relate to USA, and this book does not. Each flower mentions a zone for growing, it mentions zone 9 numerous times. However, the book says on page 21 "Zones 9-12 do not occur in Canada" ? I tried to relate zones in my Great Western Book to the temperatures of the Canadian zones. Zone 1 in Botanic is not the zone 1 in Great Western, we are comparing Apples to Oranges. Yes I like this book. If I lived in Canada it would be a must. I am very dissapointed that Amazon did not show page 21, the Canadian Termperate Zones, if they had I would never have bought it.
Now, This Is A BOOK!!.......2002-08-19
WOW! Was I shocked when this huge bundle of joy showed up at my door! I anticipated a lot of pics but holy cow! I was able to use this hummer to identify 2 roses I had scoured other resources for in no time! (So far I only have 40 roses.)
It is beautifully written and the photos--pure eye candy! I adore roses so it was like giving a gourmet dinner to a starving person.
Those are the good points. I only have 2 nit-pickies that are hardly worth mentioning because I ADORE this book and recommend it 100% to any and all garden lovers. 1) The Cd-Rom tweeked on my computer--probably because I have version Windows ME..., 2) on the rose descriptions they forgot to share how big the roses would get. They used words like " a medium shrub". I figured that they meant about 5 feet but if you dont know roses its a necessary tid-bit.
So there. if you are unsure of spending the hefty sum on this book, don't think twice...BUY IT TODAY--And BTW Amazon has it the cheapest. GO ROSE HAPPY!! Do it...you won't be sorry.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best.......2007-06-09
Botanica is one of my favorite reference books, it's got great pictures and so many unusual plants. I also own the American Horticultural Society's A-Z Encyclopedia, but I never use it. Botanica is written in clear, common English, gets me excited about the plants, and gives me an intuitive feel for the plants. A-Z is a dry, scholarly compendium and an excellent doorstop.
One problem with Botanica is the binding. It's been through many different publishers, but every well-used copy I see is held together with strapping tape.
I find the zone recommendations dead on, but maybe that's because one of the editors lives in my town. But don't worry, I've only met him once and he had had no influence on this review.
Attractive to the eye, somewhat limited utility........2004-05-27
I purchased this book as "The Plant Book" on sale for $19.99 at Borders books & music in 2004. It is interesting to note that the introduction _How This Book Works_ still uses the title "Botanica".
This book has tons of pictures that are veritable eye candy, but their usefulness varies. Some of the pictures are not close-up enough to identify small details of the plants and others are so close-up that you can't tell the overall growth form of the plant. Ideally, it would be nice to have several pictures at different scales (e.g. close up views of flowers and leaves at several angles and pictures of the whole plant). However, inclusion of more pictures probably would have made the book too big to transport.
When trying to identify unknown plants it is nice to have the plants organized by generic name, when you know the genus. However, it can make identifying the plant frustrating when you run into a plant that you know which family, but not which genus it belongs to. In such cases, a book with keys and organization by family is more useful (e.g. Liberty Hyde Bailey's Manual of Cultivated Plants). However, this book's color pictures and quantity of plants nicely compliments books such as Bailey's Manual of Cultivated Plants as well as local flora manuals such as The Jepson Manual.
I haven't used the book enough yet to judge the accuracy of its information.
the professionals choice.......2002-06-22
I'm a garden designer and couldn't do without it. Every garden centre I know also has a copy. The Zone guides have always been exactly right based on my experience. Highly recommended.
(I also own and use our local edition of the AHS Encyclopedia which Amazon sell but it is slightly older so doesn't have as many new varieties - still a great book)
Plant Nursery's Best Friend.......2002-01-06
Working in a small plant nursery, we depend on this book for everything it seems. Many of our customers are new to the area and know only common names for what they're looking for. We've used this book extensively to find these plants. In fact, we've used it so much that this is the second copy we're ordering, having worn out the first! No garden center or gardener should be without this incredible book.
I HAVE 2 COPIES OF THIS!.......2001-07-23
This book is excellent! It covers almost very plant you can think of - and many more! It covers everything you need to know before you consider buying, planting...
My friends always want to borrow this, so I have 2 copies. That way I am sure that I will never be without it.
This is a great single source book! If you can only buy one- THIS IS IT!

This is a great reference book! The photos are beautiful and very clear. The book is arranged by plant groups which is very helpful. I am very happy with my purchase!
Really Great for Compact Encyclopedia.......2004-06-11
This is the most useful gardening reference book on our shelf -- in great part, because you can actually carry it with you and (mostly) find what you are looking for in it -- with useful pictures!
I use this book when attending horticultural plant sales, etc., where a wide variety of species are available, and some culture info (how much sun, how much water, what kind of soil) is a critical success factor. This book has helped me avoid extreme errors on both ends of the spectum -- seduction by a beautiful but impossible (and expensive) plant, and overlooking a humble-on-the-shelf but PERFECT in the garden new addition.
In order to be portable, the book HAS to leave some stuff out, and that can be annoying in today's world of endless varieties and hybrids. There's an intro section on garden planning (and a good zone map), but the meat of this thing is the plant listings. Go for it -- this is a good one.

Book Description
Muslim Writers on Judaism and the Hebrew Bible deals with the way in which Judaism and its holy scriptures were viewed by nine medieval Muslim writers representing different genres of Arabic literature: Ibn Rabban al-Tabari, Ibn Qutayba, al-Yabqubi, Abu Jabfar al-Tabari, al-Masbudi, al-Maqdisi, al-Baqillani, al-Biruni and Ibn Hazm. After an introductory chapter on the reception of Biblical materials in early Islam and a presentation of the authors under review, the book focuses on their knowledge of Judaism and the text of the Hebrew Bible, and subsequently discusses issues frequently debated between Muslims and Jews, namely, the claim that the Torah contains references to Muhammad, and the assertion that the Torah has been both abrogated and falsified. In the appendix, texts by Ibn Qutayba and al-Maqdisi are offered for the first time in an English translation.

Depth and beauty.......2002-11-29
I've never come across such an intelligent and holistic dance artist as Mr Nagrin, nor one with such integrity.
He is sublimely articulate about his working methods, honest, and interesting to read. I can't wait to try some of the improvisations he describes with my tertiary students.
A master collection of performance-quality improvisations........1997-10-15
An important book by an important dancer and choreographer.
Thumb through "Dance and the Specific Image: Improvisation" and you will envision yourself performing improvisations onstage. Daniel Nagrin's exercises, games and structures (EGAS, he calls them) work behind closed doors or in front of live audiences. They are clear and have a beginning, middle and end, and yet offer rich unpredictable results.
Nagrin's instructions are set apart from the rest of the text, so it's easy to graze through the book. But the greatest rewards come from reading the book from cover to cover, because the narrative reveals every step of the creative process to which Nagrin committed himself. It's an enjoyable read. It's very generous in its sharing. It makes you want to dance in a whole new way -- particularly in group sessions like the ones he directed.
Reading and re-reading this book is the next best thing to having Mr. Nagrin in residence.
A surprising application: At George Mason University this book is required reading for graduate courses in 3D human animation!

Book Description
This biography recounts the adventures of Phillip Parker King, a marine surveyor who completed a series of grueling voyages between 1817 and 1822 up the northwest coast of Australia. His journeys brought him to King George Sound and Van Diemen's Land as well as the treacherous waters of the Great Barrier Reef, places which serve as the backdrop to his encounters with shoals and tides, reefs and wildlife, and Aboriginal peoples. Written through the observant lens of a sailor, this work considers whether King's faithful service and unscandalous lifestyle have contributed to his relative obscurity in modern scholarship.
