perfect.......2007-08-14
This was an invaluable resource for our 16 day trip to southern Utah. This book also includes information for the other national parks in Utah. We used it every day on our trip.
Recommended Resource Guide for Visitors to Southern Utah National Parks.......2007-05-14
This book is the best and most informative source of useful information for visitors to the national parks of southern Utah that I have found. It provides information on: the most popular hikes, popular restaurants, good camping sites, activities, descriptions of geology, flora and fauna, and brief histories of the early cultures, explorers and settlers. The book is very well written by authors who obviously know their stuff. All material is presented clearly and concisely and in a manner that enhances its usefulness. I recommend this book whole heartedly.
Lonely Planet Zion & Bryce Canyon: National Parks.......2007-04-13
Great little book. I do not know why it is named "Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks". This book covers all the national parks, monuments and State Parks in Utah. For each area, the book gives information on what to see depending on the amount of time you have to visit(half day, one, two, three or more days). For each location it gives you the sights to see, trails to hike and other activities to do in the area. Along with places to stay (Hotels, Motels and campgrounds), places to eat, equipment rental and more. This book is small enough to put into your glove box.
Lonely Planet Zion and Bryce.......2006-11-10
Excellent book. My husband and I recently went on vacation to Southern Utah. We planned on visiting 5 national parks in Utah. I had purchased other books in addition to this one to prepare for the trip. I had no idea that this book would contain so much information about Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands. It was far more than I expected from the title. It even covered Moab. We booked everything last minute and called from one location before arriving at the next to secure hotel rooms. All the recommendations for lodging and dining were accurate. We were so pleased with this book that we purchased the Lonely Planet guide to the Grand Canyon while we were in Moab since we were visiting the Grand Canyon as part of this trip. I will definitely use their guide books again. They are well organized and are great for a quick reference. I kept this copy in my purse the entire trip. I would pull it out frequently to look up information about touring the parks or to find a place for dinner.
Terrific guide to southern Utah.......2006-10-22
The title is slightly problematic, as this book covers much of southern Utah, its national parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonland, Capitol Reef, Arches), national monuments, and other places worth of a visit. The maps are crisp and readable, though a few more detailed topo lines would help. Trail descriptions and recommendations for visits are generally pretty good as are estimates of time. Suggestions for places to eat and stay were also worthwhile. Other more specialized books are available if you want to spend most of the trip in one specific area, but this is a great survey of southern Utah.
Customer Reviews:
Full of inaccuracies and stereotypes.......2007-02-22
I was very disappointed by this book, and if I were Native American, I might even be offended by it. The book attempts to generalize too much about a very diverse group of tribes and native groups, and it conflates time so much that it isn't always clear what happened prehistorically, what happened at contact, and what is true today. Many of the comments about Native Americans play to stereotypes (scalping is implied to be universal, for instance), and there are a few details that are just plain wrong (corn and maize listed as separate foodstuffs). I suggest you look elsewhere if you want a factual and sensitive treatment of this subject.
Usborne - Who were the first North Americans?.......2005-01-17
I used this book in a unit study about the North Americans with my daughter. We appreciated how the book was presented, with little blokcs of information and good pictures, as well as the little blocks entitled, "Did you know?" The information is easy to understand and well written.

Book Description
Proceedings of the 58th Annual Biology Colloquium, Oregon State University. Seven chapters include genetic and craniometric studies and what they mean in regard to the initial peopling of the Americas.
Book Description
This is the first incisive and revealing exploration of the meaning, mysteries, and misunderstanding of the most powerful symbol in the history of mankind. The book analyzes the swastika's pre-Nazi religious and commercial uses in all of its varied permutations, the Nazi appropriation and misuses of the form, and its contemporary applications as both a racist and an apolitical icon. Tracing the symbol to its beginnings in antiquity, the author explores the myth and cult of swastika lore and its evolving use as a commercial trademark and logo, then speculates on the future of the symbol in two final, thought-provoking chapters, "The Swastika Revisited: Today and Tomorrow" and "Hitler's Children: Rock and Roll."
Steven Heller, a New York Times senior art director, AIGA Journal of Graphic Design editor, and author of more than seventy books, lives in New York.
Customer Reviews:
It's not the sign that counts, it's how you use it!.......2005-03-16
Although I did find this book a very interesting read, I thought it was somewhat lacking in information on the ancient history of this potent symbol (and it is ancient). It does contain a brief overview of the places and people whom the swastika had meaning (basically everyone), but hardly enough to satisfy me (but this is a personal preference).
What is not left to be desired is the imagery this book contains, which I feel, is well worth the purchase price. However at least one mistake is made in attributing an image to its owner (CD for the band The Residents that is wrongly attributed to Sacred Reich).
I have always believed the swastika a powerful, and much maligned human symbol, and I for one am ready to discard its recent history as a disturbing episode in an otherwise brilliant career.
Remember: It's not the sign that counts, it's how you use it!
SPLENDID!.......2004-09-18
Here's three good things about this book.
First, the 157 pages of text provide a comprehensive overview of the history of the you-know-what-symbol. The swastika. There's a lot of interesting revelations. For example, the swastika appears to be the oldest symbol uncovered anywhere, and is found in just about every culture and civilization, everywhere and at any time in History. I mean, it was everywhere!
Second, the book provides dozens of reproductions of the swastika, in a myriad of variants, including on cigar labels, poker chips, cards, as a shoulder patch for the U.S. Army (1918), and on a monthly American magazine for young girls, entitled: "The Swastika: Written, Issued and Read by The Girl's Club."
Finally, the author is a graphic designer, and a darn good one. The book itself--the size, the color, the paper, the setting of the text, the brilliant and varied reproductions--these all delighted me, and I hope they delight you.
Not only that, consider that the bookjacket has to be one of the most extreme, hardcore bookcovers in history. The cover shows a black swastika, on a white circle, on a red background. One glance at it, and you'll know why the swastika is the most powerful symbol ever created. Forever sinister, the swastika today is the only symbol that you can write with a pen on the border of the daily paper, that has acquired the status of "genetically evil." Those scribblings on the notepad--they will never be redeemed! Hollywood is calling.
Take a peek.
Symbol beyond Redemption? by Steven Heller.......2004-02-22
Steven Heller's book about the "Symbol Beyond Redemption?" is very informative. It needs updating with more recent information about the topic addressed. For example, the notorious flag symbol of the National Socialist German Workers Party, although an ancient symbol, was altered for use as overlapping S-letters for 'socialism' under the National Socialist German Workers' Party. It was deliberately turned 45 degrees counter clockwise and always oriented in the S-direction. Similar alphabetic symbolism is still visible as Volkswagen logos. American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) bear some blame for evolving the shape as alphabetical symbolism for socialism, adopted later by German socialists. Edward Bellamy was the author of an international bestseller that launched the nationalism movement, and his book was translated into every major language, including German. American socialists also share some blame for the notorious stiff-arm salute of German National Socialism. Edward was cousin to Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge Of Allegiance (1892) and the early Pledge used the straight arm salute, and the Pledge was used at civic meetings of the Theosophical Society, Freemasons and other groups before it spread to Germany. Francis and Edward were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and they promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. The Pledge's early salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge. All of the above are modern discoveries by the nation's leading authority on the Pledge of Allegiance, the author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets." People were persecuted for refusing to perform robotic chanting to the national flag at the same time in the USA and Germany (to the American flag, and to the German symbol flag). The socialist dogma led to the socialist Wholecost: 60 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 50 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 20 million under the National Socialist German Workers Party. It might be the most tragic part of world history.
Terrifying Visual Anthropology.......2000-09-20
What a pleasure it is to experience the work of an author who has total command over his material. In a slender 160 pages, the author explains -- in both words and pictures -- the mythology, anthropology, abuse, and endurance of this fascinating and lurid symbol. This is one of the most interesting books on fascist regalia written in recent years.

Turkeys, Joe Hutto writes, have gotten a bad rap for being, well, stupid creatures. In his account of a year spent studying a flock of wild turkeys in the loblolly pine woods of Florida, he aims to improve their reputation. They are, he notes, masters of disguise, blending in with their surroundings in ways so subtle as to make the work of predators--especially human hunters--difficult. And, he writes, they are "curious to a fault, want a working understanding of every aspect of their surroundings, and their memory is impeccable." His affectionate portrait may not convince English speakers to stop calling each other turkeys, but it will make welcome reading for birders and wildfowl enthusiasts.
Customer Reviews:
A GREAT ANIMAL FRIENDSHIP BOOK.......2007-02-20
I loved this book about Mr Hutto spending a season with wild turkeys and befriending them. I read an earlier version of this paperback the year before last and I loved and absolutely enjoyed it. There should be more kindhearted animal loving people in the world like Mr. Hutto. I also loved the illustrations in this book. They are phenomenal. I loved the story and the photographs. Well written. If you love a book about wild animals, or animals period, this book is for you. Not only is this man a great writer but also a great photographer and illustrator/artist as well. A MUST READ.
Illumination In the Flatwoods.......2006-09-12
Although I could not afford to purchase this book, I was delighted to get a copy from my library. I love the animal/human relationship, esp. when taken to its magical realm; the doors that open when entrusted by an animal. The sketches are sweet, simple and relay so much feeling; they are art. For a human to reach for this level of relationship is remarkable and to have it returned by animals is magical. Esp. the last par.: "...by some language that we both understand but cannot speak, and I could say: 'I know you, old friend. I recognize you by your iridescence, your incandescence, your illumination - I recognize you by your loneliness-you must be my brother.'" This book is a sort of recollection of who we are - our purpose. I love the double meaning of illuminated.
A wonderful story.......2005-07-04
I believe this book is now out of print and I cannot imagine why. I have been a reader of nature oriented literature all of my life and feel that this is among the top 10 or 15. Extremely moving account of a biologists relationship with a group of wild turkeys raised and imprinted by the author. Read this!!
Joe Hutto, writer extraordinaire.......2003-11-14
This is an incredibly beautifully written book. I never thought I would find it so interesting and spellbinding. I was doubtful when first beginning the book that the author would be able to maintain his observer status, but he did so remarkably well, raising the turkeys to be real wild turkeys. As I read the final line in the book, I felt I was closing a chapter in my life in which I had personally been involved with the turkeys and the author. I was impressed with Mr. Hutto's dedication to these remarkable birds, his keen observations, and also with his obvious "connection" to them. I hope he will write again in the future.
Simply inspiring and heartfelt........2002-06-03
Beautifully written and truly amazing feat accomplished by Mr. Hutto. Many can raise wild turkeys in their own world, however, it took a man with great conviction and love for the bird and it's environment to reverse the process and let the poults raise him. I couldn't put this book down and fell in love with the characters. In closing, I truly admire Mr. Hutto for his dedication and am thankful I don't hunt anywhere near TurkeyBoy's range as I don't believe I could pull the trigger on a bird that has survived the perils he has faced throughout his life.

The next best thing to being there.......2006-08-01
If you haven't had the opportunity to see the beautiful gardens of Charleston in person, then this book should suffice until you can get there. Twenty-five private gardens are presented here with color photos and an essay for each. All of the elements that make these gardens so special - brick walls and pathways, neat boxwood hedges, colorful flowers like azaleas and camellias, fountains, wrought-iron gates and cobblestoned courtyards - are on delicious display. Various garden styles are represented here - classical, contemporary, an atrium garden and the garden of a palm collector are just a few examples. The author's own garden, featuring neat brick-edged beds filled with roses and perennials is included.

Book Description
There has long been a need to introduce performing-arts enthusiasts and students to the fascinating field of iconography, both as manifested in art history and in its more pragmatic or applied forms. Yet relatively little systematic effort has been made to collect and interpret centuries of such visual evidence in the light of the best available art-historical information, combined with corroborating textual documentation and insights from the histories of performance disciplines. Aspiring iconographers of the performing arts need to be aware that there are often several levels of interpretation which great works of visual art will sustain. This book explores these levels of interpretation: a surface or literal reading, a deeper reading of the work which seeks to enter the mind of the artist and asks how and why he put a given work together, and the deepest reading of the work relating it to the artistic traditions and culture in which the artist lived. In expounding on these levels of iconographic interpretations four discourses by scholars active in the study of visual records are given in relation to traditions, techniques, and trends: performance in general (Katritzky), music (Heck), theatre (Erenstein), and dance (Smith). Effort is made to keep abreast of modern technology influencing iconographic representations as on the Internet and virtual reality. Thomas F. Heck is Professor of Musicology and Head of the Music and Dance Library at the Ohio State University.
