    Book Description

Information on an animal and its relatives can be used to predict the animal's genetic merit, taking account of the relationships between measurements and the economic values of traits. This book describes the methodology for predicting the genetic merit of animals in the context of improvement in an animal program. It discusses the methods for combing different sources of information and illustrates their use with examples of breeding programs in cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. This methodology is developed from first principles, without unnecessary detail or complexity, and all the required statistical and mathematical concepts are fully explained. A series of questions helps reinforce the ideas and provide some practical experience in the prediction of genetic merit. The text is most useful for final year undergraduate and first-year graduate students of quantitative genetics and animal breeding.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide out there.......2007-07-06

I recently spent two months in Kenya, and I read a lot of guide books both before I left the U.S. and once I was in Africa. This was definitely the most useful and informative....it was far superior to Lonely Planet in both coverage and accuracy. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is going to be spending a substantial amount of time in Kenya.

5 out of 5 stars Good update on Western Kenya.......2007-05-14

Last April, together with my son I went on a 10 days' self-drive safari in a small Maruti jeep from Nairobi to South Nyanza in Western Kenya, exploring Kenya's western highlands, the Lake Victoria coast and islands, and also the Ruma National park, bringing the Rough Guide to Kenya 8 with us. We found the book very helpful. The guidebook probably has the best coverage of this area. The safari was great!

    Book Description

The Rough Guide Map Kenya is the most detailed and comprehensive map to this alluring country. A hugely popular destination for independent travellers and escorted tourists alike, both for its beaches and the safari parks of the interior. The scale of 1:1,000,000 is large enough to make the map easily managable whilst also showing enough detail to pinpoint buildings and dirt tracks. The map is designed for all visitors, whether travelling by car or public transport as it includes train lines and stations, petrol stations, airports, distances between towns, road numbers and details of road surfaces.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars rough guide to kenya map.......2007-09-30

At last a useful map for Kenya - rare these days to find ANY decent map of East Africa - but now one for the professional, the student or teacher, the traveller and the dreamer -- all in one. AND plastic coated so you don't mess it up with your spilled coffee!

4 out of 5 stars The Rough Guide to Kenya.......2006-03-21

Very informative and useful tool to use along with the internet.

4 out of 5 stars very rough on some Kenya roads.......2004-12-23

While I've come to depend on Rough Guides for travel in Africa, the 7th edition of this guide proved embarrassing when I recommended that my safari drivers take the "tarred lakeshore road" that it describes as "an excellent, fast highway" from Katito to Kendu Bay. In the summer of 2003, this was probably the worst road I've ever traveled in Kenya. Conversely, while the guide describes the Mombasa Highway as so "pot-holed, narrow ... and dangerous" that "you should count on two days to cover Nairobi-Mombasa comfortably," this was the best road I've traveled in Kenya, at least to the village of Mackinnon Road, enabling us to have breakfast in Nairobi and a late lunch in Mombasa. Shortcomings such as these result when some areas of the country are too infrequently revisited to yield accurate reviews in a subsequent edition of the guide. A design flaw in recent editions of Rough Guides is the placement of cost-estimate figures in white within small circles of color, rendering many figures difficult to discern. Furthermore, the thin type face makes reading Rough Guides more challenging than their predecessor Real Guides. These criticisms notwithstanding, I still consider Rough Guides the best available introductions to wonderful destinations.

3 out of 5 stars Revamped, looks better - but where's the spirit?.......2004-07-24

Rough Guide definitely looks smarter today than it used to. Typeface and design overhauled, and even their hideous logo (which STILL looks like a fire exit sign) has been jazzed up into a more agreeable fuzzy pharmaceutical-looking symbol. There are more photos, and better ones. Information, from what I could see, is accurate, and there good practical tips, as usual.

The problem is their writing. They say in their preface that Kenya is a hugely rewarding country to visit - but there is no evidence of the authors having a good time. The text is dry, uninspired, shallow; again, it reminds you of tax return guidance notes.

It does not FEEL like they liked the country; and, while it is evident that a lot of effort has been put in, it does feel like a 'contractual obligation product' rather than an inspired writing from someone who is genuinely connected with Kenya.

While I found hotel descriptions helpful, dining advice is the most disappointing aspect. People who know Kenya better than I do confirmed to me, with bewilderment, that restaurants appear to have been picked at random or, worse, still, their names have been copied from leaflets lying around in upmarket hotels. It is a real shame in a country where you can have the best Ethiopian meal outside Addis.

The section on getting to Kenya is hardly helpful - essentially lots of hot air on theoretically available airline options, prices which were out of date before the guide was even printed and a stubborn refusal to admit that these days, if anyone is too thick to check the price on the net, perhaps that person would be better off staying at home.

It is commendable that the guide is more open to all kinds of readers and does not presume that everyone only has twenty dollars a day to spend, but its value is diminished by the lacklustre writing. An informative and accurate guide does not need to be this boring.

5 out of 5 stars Readable, accurate, entertaining.......2004-07-02

We found this book to be extremely accurate and informative, both as we prepared for our 2 week trip and while we were in Kenya. The description of the "snake museum" was perfect - we read it out loud to the group as we stood in the park. Much of the information provided to us by our hosts from Nairobi matched what we already had learned from our reading. When we prepare for our next trip anywhere, we'll look first for a Rough Guide!

High-energy benga music, with its pulsating beat and funky interlocking guitar riffs, has been at the forefront of Kenyan pop since the late 1960s. More recently, contemporary artists, such as Gidi Gidi Maji Maji and Nyota Ndogo, have been exploring the possibilities of merging traditional melodies, instruments and rhythms with new sounds from R&B and other international genres. In addition, taarab music Â- a mixture of Indian Ocean and coastal traditions Â- and rumba-based Swahili and Lingala music are phenomenally popular. The Rough Guide To The Music Of Kenya spans these styles from classic benga gems, to sparkling new taarab compositions, with a sampling of the most innovative sounds of KenyaÂ's hip hop generation.

Below is a portion of the publisher's note within the book, that will give you some good information.

"Bevels and glass jewels add sparkling points of interest to any stained glass project. This book includes 83 floral, geometric, bird, butterfly, fish, Art Nouveau and Victorian style patterns that have been specially designed to highlight the faceted and shaped glass pieces that appear within them. The patterns appear in square, rectangular, circular, octagonal and free-form shapes and can be used for lightcatchers, door and window panels, box tops and glass projects. Bevels and jewels are no more difficult to incorporate into a pattern than regular stained glass sections."

Later in this same section they go on further about the contents of the book.

"The illustrations on pages 4-7 show the true size (and in some cases two views) of all the bevels and jewels that appear within the patterns on pages 8-64. The patterns, however, appear within the book at half their actual size and will need to be xeroxed at a 200% enlargement in order for the bevels and jewels to fit. The measurements that are printed next to each pattern give the dimensions to which it will be enlarged when doubled in size."

My impressions of the book, as I just received it are positive. There are some pretty nice designs inside from the tradition looking door insert types to some pretty intricate bird, fish and flower designs. None except for the cover are shown as a picture, all are sketches and drawings. Inside both covers are drawings with suggested colors of 11 of the designs within, but the rest only have the patterns in black and white. All patterns have other patterns on the back side.

                      Some details are:

8 butterfly designs (some with flowers)

                      3 birds

                      3 fish

7 flowers (distinctly flowers and not stylized geometric renditions)

The bulk of the book, is stylized flower or geometric designs. Really neat looking ones. This is not surprising as the bevels and jewels are limited to specific geometric shapes.

All in all a decent book.

In this BBG monograph, garden designer Colston Burrell reveals methods for transforming your small city plot baking in sunlight into a stunning garden bed using perennials. These BBG guides are an inexpensive and safe way to begin learning about gardening in urban and suburban areas, and perhaps because the source is located in a large metropolitan area (New York). Furthermore, most if not all of the plant material (he does include a list of shrubs for sunny dry plances) listed can be found in city nurseries and garden shops, and most if not all will not disappoint the new gardener.

Although Burrell is a garden designer and plantsman now residing in Charlottesville VA ("cold" Zone 7), he has lived all over the US and his monograph includes good ideas for every region. In fact, you may be surprised at just how much information he has crammed into THE SUNNY BORDER. If you are grappling with growing things in shade, the BGG monograph by Burrell and Hardiman (INTIMATE GARDENS) or George Shenk's book on Growing plants in shade may prove more useful.

Tango Charlie tells the story of singer-songwriter and retired Navy Senior Chief Tommy Cox. Cox augmented a twenty-year career as a member of the Naval Security Group, much of it assigned to submarines on Cold War patrols in undisclosed areas, with a second career as the creator of a unique genre of submarine music. In this memoir, Cox recounts about as much of his Navy career as security permits, and gives the words, and background, of 25 of his signature songs.

Knowing Tommy personally, I consider it a great privilege to heartily recommend "Tango Charlie" to all those who served on the boats, as well as anyone with an interest in submarine operations during the cold war era. I especially appreciate Tommy's motivation for writing this book: to preserve the history of the music of our Submarine Force. For years, Tommy has entertained those of us in the "Silent Service" with his unique genre of music specifically tailored for submariners and born of personal experience. Now, in this book, he has given us the story behind these wonderful songs. And what a story it is! Tommy's straight forward and often humorous style of writing makes this an extremely interesting and enjoyable read!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Tango Charlie.......2006-12-09

Tommy Cox has captured the spirit of what it was like to ride submarines during the cold war. I've never met him but I feel like I know him well through his music and now his book. We rode similar submarines to many of the same places. He just went their more often. Reading his book took me back to those long patrols in places we never went to doing things nobody would ever talk about. If you've been there you will enjoy the trip back in time; if you haven't been there you will learn things that will amaze and amuse you. The only thing missing from this book is the rolling of the seas and that wonderful submarine aroma.

                                    5 out of 5 stars The submariner's balladeer has a hit!.......2006-11-10

Tommy Cox is a retired Chief Petty Officer who spent most of his illustrious career aboard submarines during the height of the Cold War. This was the time of great peril to this nation and the submarine service was at the forefront of our nation's defense. Cox writes of his experiences with complete candor and unusual insights, the stories are those can can only be told by one who experienced them. But his book is more, much more. For Cox has for years written and performed songs about his experiences in the silent service, songs with such catchy titles as "BIg Black Submarine", "Diesel Boats Forever" and "Freedom Patrol." He prefaces his chapters with the words of those songs, that he performs in a nice baritone, and then explains the songs origins. His is a memoir, his is a great reference book, his is the work of a born raconteur, but most of all, this is the work of a great patriot who performed a great service to his the submarine service, the Navy and this nation. I heartily recommend this book.

I spent twenty years riding boats during the same time period that Tommy did and retired as RMC(SS. I never met him during that period of time but we were on the same boats at different times and I know some of the people in the book. A book that evokes laughter (especially the speed key thing), tears (Ollie North and his fellow marines), a few familiar names (one of a very close friend) and a lot of "He nailed that right", makes for great reading. Thanks Tommy.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible true story..........2006-10-15

Tango Charlie tells the real life story of singing submarine sailor, Tommy Cox. The book reveals much of the meanings behind his songs, written during some of the most intense moments of the cold war, by a man who was really there, at the very pointy end of the spear. Between the lines, between the notes, Tommy tells stories that were never meant to be told. In his songs, and in the book "Tango Charlie" Tommy captures the true grit of those who bravely served aboard US submarines during the cold war.

In a subtle dance of arid solitude, two southern California deserts come together at Joshua Tree National Park. One is the Colorado Desert—an extension of the Sonoran Desert—and features natural gardens of ocotillo and cholla cactus. Moving west, the other end of the park engages the Mojave Desert, the special habitat of the Joshua tree as well as some of the most interesting geologic displays found anywhere. After the area became a national monument in 1936, local and regional residents were the primary visitors. As Southern California grew so did park visitation; Joshua Tree now lies within a three-hour drive of more than 18 million people. Elevated from national monument to national park status in 1994, Joshua tree now sees greater numbers of visitors than ever from around the nation and the world. For Deanne Stillman, Joshua Tree is a place of pilgrimage. Her own desert mecca, the park speaks to her in ways that no other place does. With crisp and impassioned narrative she takes the reader through the park's wonders, including a talking cactus, mysterious petroglyphs, and rocks in the shape of the late New York Yankees manager Billy Martin. Stunning photographs by Galen Hunt further accentuate the gorgeous landscape, highlighting the growing need to preserve its beauty. While it explores the park's history, geology, flora, and fauna, Joshua Tree also is a plea to walk lightly on the land, to conserve our natural heritage, and to appreciate places that call out to the soul.

When I got this book I spent the first week enjoying the photographs. I'm glad I devoted some undivided attention for these images. They express a personal involvement with, and a command of the subject matter. They would make a wonderful, gallery show. I was not in a hurry to get to the text, though, probably because I thought I already got the gist of the book from the excerpt in "My California" (Angel City Press), or that it was going to be a bit of a travel log.

What was I thinking!?! I clearly forgot who I was dealing with. This is the author that cracked wide open my emotions with her story of the heroic power of a young woman in the same desert ("Twentynine Palms").

Besides the blind side assault on my status quo, this volume, as most of what Ms. Stillman writes, performs well on several levels. Geology, botany, zoology, humor, history, and politics are woven together with autobiographical anthropology. And, despite the nonfiction genre, the book subtly tracks the opening, conflict, climax, and resolution of a play or novel.

Much of my enjoyment in reading her work is my perception of the recurring theme of putting Pop-Culture, Americana, and civilization in context. A kind of Grand Unification Theory. All political debate prompted by the biting, well supported commentary seems welcome in this Big Picture. And, Baseball is more than just a metaphor.

This book does satisfy the nature enthusiast's desire for the must see, and might see highlights of the Park, but moreover, it's well crafted, moving, and much larger than it's size suggests.

In the late nineteenth and early twentiethcenturies, a small group of Jewish immigrants carved out their own vibrant community in Staten Island. Jewish settlers clustered around the Arietta Street, St. George, Bergen Point, and Perth Amboy ferries and built seven synagogues and a Jewish community center. Jewish dry goods, candy, hardware, and men's furnishings stores sprung up along the major shopping areas of Jersey Street and Richmond Avenue. As the Jewish population grew, it expanded into new developments in Willowbrook, Eltingville, and Arden Heights and was able to support a Jewish elementary school.

I gave my father this book for Father's Day. He loved it so much I bought another copy for my mother. My Mom loved it so much that she bought a copy for a friend of my grandmothers. She, in turn, loved it so much that she bought copies for her children and grandchildren. I think I've created a little royalties boomlet of sales for the author, but everyone who this book is meant for- Jewish folk with ties to Staten Island (N.B.- pre-the Verazzano Narrows Bridge, which ruined S.I., but that is another story...), seems to think the book is fantastic. So if you're in the target audience, definitely buy this book.

There's a lot of books out there on the Jewish communities in Manhattan, Bronx and, of course, Brooklyn. Everybody seems to forget about Staten Island, which is unfortunate.

If you're a local history buff, Jewish or not, this is a quick and concise read of a lovely community in Staten Island.

                                    Book Description

In the earliest years of the twentieth century, North American ballroom dancers favored the waltz or the polka. But in the 1910s, a new dance, the tango, broke onto the United States scene when Vernon and Irene Castle performed it in a Broadway musical. Rudolph Valentino, Arthur Murray, and Xavier Cugat popularized it even more in the 1920s and 1930s, and thousands of people were crowding dance floors around the country to hear the music and dance the tango.

This work chronicles the history of the tango in the United States, from its antecedents in Argentina, Paris, and London to the present day. It covers the dancers, musicians, and composers who were promoting it, and the tango's influence on American music. Chapters are dedicated to Vernon and Irene Castle, Rudolph Valentino, Arthur Murray, Xavier Cugat, the Big Band and jazz singers who incorporated tangos with English lyrics into their repertoires, Juan Carlos Cobián, Osvaldo Fresedo, Francisco Canaro, Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla, the influence of World War II on the tango, portrayals of the tango in the movies and ballet, and the tango recordings of Gerry Mulligan, Gary Burton, Al Di Meola, Yo-Yo Ma, and Julio Iglesias, among many other topics.

Many younger dancers, and some not-so-young ones think that the Tango arrived in the U.S. in 1985 when the show, "Tango Argentino", debuted in New York City. Carlos Groppa more than corrects this error in his book, "Tango in the United States: A History" (McFarland Co.). He takes us back to the first appearances of Tango at the beginning of the 20th century. Mr. Groppa asserts that the Tango has outlasted all other dance fads in the U.S., through good times and bad. In text and visual illustration, we meet fascinating dancers, musicians, and actors who helped make the Tango a permanent part of the American scene, from Vernon & Irene Castle, James Reece Europe, Rudolph Valentino, Carlos Gardel, and Xavier Cugat, to Astor Piazzolla, and the creators and performers of shows in more recent times, such as Juan Carlos Copes, Maria Nieves, and the Sexteto Mayor of the aforementioned "Tango Argentino". This is just the tip of a fascinating iceberg, which is lovingly described by the extremely knowledgeable author. This book is a "must" for anyone with a real interest in the Tango, whether as a dancer or as an observer.
Felicidades y muchas gracias, Sr. Groppa!

A friend gave me this book as a birthday gift, because I love tango. I was hook up from the begining. The amount of information -quantity and quality- it's amazing and revealing.
I never heard in my whole life that the tango was in the USA for such a long time, almost a century.
I did hear before that Irene and Vernon Castle danced tango, because I saw their biographical picture with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Also I saw Valentino dancing tango en "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse". But that Xavier Cugat, Bing Crosby and Tony Martin recorded tangos, I never heard.
To my full surprise I found that Gerry Mulligan also composed and recorded tango with tango master Astor Piazzolla.
The book looks very well docomented, and beautifully illustrated with some historical pictures.
I highly recomend it to all the people interested not only in tango but also in the development and influence that foreign music had in jazz.

Arriving in Iraq on the eve of the U.S. invasion, unaffiliated with any newspaper and hoping to pick up assignments along the way, Ashley Gilbertson was one of the first photojournalists to cover the disintegration of America’s military triumph as looting and score settling convulsed Iraqi cities. Just twenty-five years old at the time, Gilbertson soon landed a contract with the New York Times, and his extraordinary images of life in occupied Iraq and of American troops in action began appearing in the paper regularly. Throughout his work, Gilbertson took great risks to document the risks taken by others, whether dodging sniper fire with American infantry, photographing an Iraqi bomb squad as they diffused IEDs, or following marines into the cauldron of urban combat.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot gathers the best of Gilbertson’s photographs, chronicling America’s early battles in Iraq, the initial occupation of Baghdad, the insurgency that erupted shortly afterward, the dramatic battle to overtake Falluja, and ultimately, the country’s first national elections. No Western photojournalist has done as much sustained work in occupied Iraq as Gilbertson, and this wide-ranging treatment of the war from the viewpoint of a photographer is the first of its kind. Accompanying each section of the book is a personal account of Gilbertson’s experiences covering the conflict. Throughout, he conveys the exhilaration and terror of photographing war, as well as the challenges of photojournalism in our age of embedded reporting. But ultimately, and just as importantly, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot tells the story of Gilbertson’s own journey from hard-drinking bravado to the grave realism of a scarred survivor. Here he struggles with guilt over the death of a marine escort, tells candidly of his own experience with post-traumatic stress, and grapples with the reality that Iraq—despite the sacrifice in Iraqi and American lives—has descended into a civil war with no end in sight.

A searing account of the American experience in Iraq, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is sure to become one of the classic war photography books of our time.

Some of the best war photography I've seen. Although it will leave you reeling, this book is probably the only beautiful thing to come out of this war so far. It's nearly impossible to imagine not only being there as Gilbertson was, but that he seemed to risk his life to get each shot -- each one perfect, and all too real.

Small Boat to Freedom is the moving and inspiring story of one man's decision to leave the country he loved because of a political situation he abhorred. John Vigor had it all, a loving family, a secure and well-deserved reputation as a syndicated South African newspaper columnist, and a lovely home in one of South Africa's most beautiful cities, Durban. But an apartheid-regime clampdown on freedom of expression forced Vigor to the wrenching decision to leave his idyllic life-and financial security-and leave South Africa on a 31-foot sloop with his wife and seventeen-year-old son for a precarious voyage to a new but uncertain life in America.
At age fifty, Vigor had been a journalist for eighteen years, working for anti-apartheid newspapers, raising a family of three sons with his wife, June, also a journalist. But in 1987 the South African government and its once-untouchable apartheid policy was crumbling. In an attempt to clamp down on dissident opinion, the government began restricting writers. The Vigors knew it was time to leave, but to do so meant losing most of their savings, the scant remainder of which they used to purchase a boat for the dangerous voyage from Durban around the Cape of Good Hope and across the South Atlantic to Florida.
Small Boat to Freedom is an emotional and colorful account of two
journeys, one of conscience, the other of courage, each inspired by the author's strength and that of his family.

5 out of 5 stars A Page Turning Journey Across the Sea.......2004-06-21

In 1987 the South African government was failing and the nation on the brink of a civil war. British born John Vigor emigrated to South Africa at the age of thirteen. By age fifty he had become a syndicated columnist for an anti-apartheid newspaper. Yet he realized when the revolution came people wouldn't care who he was or what he stood for. He and his family were in harm's way. When racist graffiti appeared on their garden wall and discussion turned to the possibility of buying a shotgun, John knew it was time to leave. Abandoning a comfortable life and a country they loved, John and his American wife, June, were forced to give up most of their life savings to the South African government. Risking everything, the Vigors purchased a 31-foot sloop and provisions for a trans-Atlantic voyage to America, where they hoped start over. Hidden on board was a small fortune in gold coins.

Small Boat to Freedom narrates the dramatic story of this voyage across some of the most dangerous seas in the world-past the Cape of Storms, around the Cape of Good Hope, north along the Skeleton Coast, and into the vast South Atlantic. John with his wife and their youngest son braved these dangers along with hurricane winds, rogue waves, failed equipment, and other perils as they made their way towards America. It is chock full of sailing details and the history of famous captains, hidden islands, record breaking voyages, and the legacy of ocean travel. It is a poetic look at nature, being out of reach of land powered only by the wind and sea-and being at its mercy:

"We had been lucky so far. The storm waves had grown with the howling wind as the hours passed, but, as fate would have it, the real monster waves, the widely spaced graybeards with their fiercely plunging crests, had laid down their acres of seething white foam on either side of us.... Now for the first time, we were in the direct line of one, and there was nothing I could do about it. ... What I remember now is not so much the fear-though, heaven knows, I was paralyzed with fear-as the helplessness of it, the feeling of inevitability, of not being able to do anything about it. That was somehow more frightening than the raw fear... just before the wave struck, I closed my eyes, crouched down in the cockpit, and wondered if fish would gobble up the precious gold coins we were trying to smuggle out of South Africa, as they swallow the shiny lures of fishermen..."

Most importantly, however, is the message the author writes for Americans in a time of war and government reaction. John watched in dismay following the attacks of September 11, 2001 as the American government cracked down on civil liberties. Raised in a society divided by apartheid, and witness to the destructive affects of tyranny, John wrote his story of sacrifice and survival as a reminder to us what lengths others will go to live in a free society. He cautioned Americans of relinquishing their hard won civil rights to a federal government, and to the dangers of ignoring the voices of other peoples and cultures, even if they are among our enemies. It is a poignant story of surprising depth, and relative to the American situation in 2004 as we face war against terrorism at home and abroad.
