Book Description

Princess Royal Island--an uninhabited spot of land off the coast of British Columbia--is the home of the rare Kermode bear, a variety of grizzly bear. Also called the white, ghost or spirit bear, it has long been the subject of myth, curiousity and fascination to humans. Until recently, these animals had never been exposed to civilization. Now reissued with an introduction by the author, Spirit Bear is the story of Charles Russell's quest to forge a unique relationship of mutual trust with the rare spirit bear of Princess Royal Island. Russell was on the island to help Jeff and Sue Turner with their film, Island of the Ghost Bear. During the course of the shoot, he became intrigued with, and eventually befriended the shy young Spirit Bear who was the subject of the film. Russell has spent many years studying bears in their natural habitat. In this book he describes his early encounters with bears in the Rockies and Alaska, shared with his father, well-known writer Andy Russell, and his encounters with grizzlies in British Columbia's Khutzeymateen Valley. This wonderful book, which is illustrated with 100 breathtaking colour photographs, is part of an ongoing effort by conservationists to save Princess Royal Island as a sanctuary for the Kermode bear.

amazing photographs and experiences by author. I did not know the Spirit Bear existed until read this book. L'Ohanna

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Great for any bear lover.......1999-07-15

This is a fascinating story of rare and beautiful animals and the crew of research photographers who became intimately associated with them. It offers some startling revelations into the life and behavior of bears. The Spirit Bear, or Kermode Bear, is a white genetic variety of black bear, found only on Princess Royal Island off British Columbia. The region is also home to black bears and grizzly bears which are included in the book as well. What is most remarkable here is how the bears on the island, which had very little prior human contact, accepted the crew with an open gentleness allowing many close encounters to be documented. The book is written in an engaging first person style and beautifully photographed with close ups of bears in various activities. It will surely be a favorite addition to the library of any nature lover.

5 out of 5 stars great content, credible author, fascinating photos.......1999-06-04

Spirit Bear is the best combination of a well-conceived book design, telling photography, and an exceptional storyline. The author's credibility is supported by a three-generation family history in grizzly bear country. His true experience, though, is reflected in his down-to-earth sincerity and simplicity of reporting. Reverence, balanced with pragmatic humor, sets a very ageeable tone for this fascinating book. With only one very moderately bloody-nosed bear photo, you could quite readily share this book with children. I grew up in bear country and now live in the heart of tree-hugging country and I found this book to be true to the core of both. And a darn fine read.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!.......1999-03-29

This book will give you the chills! A mystical yet true story on the nature of "wild animals" and the mystical and spiritual link between "us" and "them".Gorgeous full color photography. The book ends with the impending destruction of the Spirit Bears habitat by logging and a plea to save this unique island ecosystem.

5 out of 5 stars Studying the white bears of Princess Royal Island.......1998-05-14

Eyeing you from the dust jacket of Spirit Bear is a very relaxed, improbable looking white bear with a benign, even friendly, air. It is the embodiment of the main subject of the book.

The author begins by summarizing his own and his family's long history and experience with black and grizzly bears. In so doing he establishes his credibility before describing his encounters with' the Kermode bear, a rare white variant of the black bear that inhabits some of the largely undisturbed west coast islands. Russell was wise to open in this manner as the story that follows truly stretches the reader's credulity.

After recounting how he came to be on Princess Royal Island to film the white bears with Sue and Jeff Turner, we learn how they got to know the Spirit Bear, and how they developed an extraordinary relationship with him. The Spirit Bear not only "enjoyed" human company, but he fished with people, slept beside them, and allowed the author to scratch and even tickle him between his toes! Perhaps most incredible is the incident when men and bear play tug-of-war, with the bear attempting to initiate a wrestling match without harming his human friends.

After these amazing adventures, the last chapter is somewhat disappointing. We read about how the author and the Turners, after several months' absence from Princess Royal Island during the winter, returned and spent their last summer finishing their film. However, only one brief paragraph is devoted to their meeting with the Spirit Bear and the renewal of their extraordinary friendship.

Despite this disappointment, the book is well worth the price. Although not always technically perfect, the amazing photographs are generally very good and document some of the incredible events described in the narrative. The text not only provides fascinating insights into bear behaviour, but give? plenty of reasons to change preconceived notions about bear aggression. Underlying the story is a message about the importance of keeping an open mind when dealing ! with animals. But don't expect the next bear you meet to treat you as a long lost friend. Knowing Truth by Name is the story of a seven-year-old boy as he is guided by his spirit friends while escaping the chaotic home of his schizophrenic mother. On another level, the boy learns the codes of spiritual truth as they appear to him in animal and spiritual teacher forms. Digging even deeper, readers are invited to join the journey to excavate their own spiritual teachers and learn to see the spinning diamonds that serve as portals to the other side of reality. To know the truth by name, readers must suspend judgment and allow the visions behind the story to peel back the curtains of reality--just as the author tells the stories for White Bear, yet finds himself to be a part of the story.

    3 out of 5 stars More "New-Age" rhetoric........2007-04-18

I found this book to be more interesting as a psychological study of a person with a personality disorder and his struggles toward ego wholeness. Without the psychological insights provided by the author, much of White Bear's story about his experiences appear schizophrenic, and at times the author seems to stretch his interpretations in order to make sense of White Bear's story. I also think that some of the stories in this book show undeniable influences from different religious traditions by the way in which the "ego", the "soul", and "the self", are talked about without any recognition of the fact that there are inherent disparaities between these traditions and the theological language in which these traditions portray themselves. This causes the book to appear like a melange of Hinduism, Brahmanism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, New-Age colloquiallisms of mis-understood theologies, and modern psychology's cognitive therapies all cast in the genre of American Indian animal story-telling without being thoroughly stirred or integrated into a coherent reconciliation of the differences in these beliefs. This might leave a knowledgeable reader wondering if White Bear is just a metaphor for a religiously schizophrenic world. While I often hear people talk about the "universal truths" that these different religions contain, the fact that Buddhism and Brahmanism are atheistic and do not believe in an eternal soul is at odds with those traditions that do believe in an eternal soul and a personal god. These types of differences result in a dichotomy that this book ignores and continues a mis-use of terms such as the "ego", the "soul", and the "self", thus perpetuating the rhetoric of the New-Age mythos.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Seated...A Book That Needs To Be Read Over And Over Again!.......2006-05-09

I read the book in one night after having received it. A book that kept me captivated enough that I could not put it down without finishing it! The Author adds so many insights to the story of a young man that struggled with the "gifts" of being a medium. Many truths are revealed in it's purest nature, since the young boy that became a man is not influenced by any other religious dogmas, yet the "Truths" that are brought out in the book relate to so many teachings of other great Master Teachers, such as Buddha and Jesus to name only a few. A must read for anyone searching for "Truth" in it's purest form, yet so deep that it will need to be read over and over to understand the concepts. A great self-help book if the concepts are applied to one's life as they go within on their own Spiritual Journey!

    5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2006-03-28

This book is very thought-provoking, no matter where you are on your own spiritual journey. It is so true that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. The teachings received in this book are very personal and relevant to where a person is, at any given time. It is a book that should be read and re-read to gain as much from the experience as possible.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and fun to read........2007-09-16

I loved how he changed around the contents from a typical guide book and let's you read the good stuff first. He has descriptions of the most popular tourist destinations in and around London first and then get's to the travel tips at the end. This book includes opinions rather than just straight facts based on his repeated trips to London. For example he recommends the paper Travelcards rather than the Oyster card for getting around on the tube and bus system. I couldn't find that sort of direction in the other London travel guide I bought.

This guide offered a number of interested ideas for families with children to visit. A number of them were unknown to us and not usually discussed in travel books.

I have found this book to be awsome. I have bought 3 other books about taking the kids to London and have found this the most helpful. The author has great advice on what to pack, where to go and how to get there. This book was my bible for our trip.

4 out of 5 stars Let's Take the Kids to London.......2003-08-10

If you plan to take children to London this is a great book. I warn you though if you get this and lots of other books you'll think this one too simplistic and put it aside. Don't. Its very straight forward and pragmatic approach is actually helpful if you read the narrative and don't just focus on the fact sheets. (The book has lots of "fact sheets" with basic details like hours, costs, location and how much time activities take.) I definitely agree with his choices of "must dos" and "highlights". I also appreciated his themes - like don't do in London what you can do at home and that children need to vary and pace actvities in ways very different than adults. We almost always took more time for each activity than he indicated. And of course some of the information is dated (for example most of the museums are free now.) Still, he has a wonderful feel for London and for what really catches a child's fancy.

I would have expected a place like Las Vegas to produce a ton of graphic material but I was disappointed to find so little inside this latest Taschen 'Icons' paperback. Basically there are too many tourist brochure photos rather than the printed ephemera I have found in other paperbacks in this excellent series.

Still, there is some interesting material, the intro essay by W R Wilkerson, the eight photos looking east and west along Fremont Street over the decades, the photos of the amazing neon signs, thanks to the leading Vegas sign maker, the Young Electric Company and the chapter dealing with gambling images.

For Vegas fans I can recommend an inexpensive hardback, 'Las Vegas: Then and Now' (ISBN 1571458530) by Su Kim Chung, 138 photos taken over the decades with the newer ones taken from the same place as the originals, the changes are amazing. Also worth a look is 'Faulous Las Vegas in the 50s' (ISBN 188331805x) by Fred Basten and Charles Phoenix, plenty of photos and graphic material presented in a book with a design as flamboyant as the place itself.

This is easily the least-informed and the worst-written of the corn snake manuals in print today. Those needing a book on keeping corn snakes in captivity would be better off buying one of the following: Corn Snakes, by R. D. Bartlett and Patricia Bartlett; Corn Snakes and Other Rat Snakes, also by Bartlett and Bartlett; and especially The Corn Snake Manual, by Bill and Kathy Love. The first of these is excellent for beginners, the last, by the Loves, is the definitive book on the species. Better yet, buy all three of them, learn, and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A great source for beginners with snakes.......1997-10-08

I read this book when I first decided to buy a corn
snake. This book gave me a good impression of how
to care for my corn snake. As a beginner with snakes, it served
        as adequate background information. However,if
you are seriously considering buying and
caring for a corn snake, it would behoove you to
consult another source as well. Do not use this book
as the bible on how to care for your snake. Since reading
this book, I have discovered many discrepancies in the text. The book is not necessarily wrong, but it suggests that there
are certain ways to care for your snake that are
preferable, whereas in reality, there are many other ways, some
of which are preferable over the ways the book suggests.
However, this book is a very interesting source for
background information on corn and red rat snakes.

          Book Description

A century ago, the Wright brothers' remarkable flight ushered in a new age and a new world. Artifacts of Flight celebrates the history of air travel-and space travel-by presenting not only some of the most famous but also some of the most intriguing objects in the National Air and Space Museum collection. These relics-ranging from a hand-written letter from George Washington on American ballooning, to personal belongings of Amelia Earhart, to lunar-dust-covered boots worn on the Moon-create an intimate, revealing, and entertaining take on airborne history. Other artifacts of flight include an unbroken teacup and saucer salvaged from the wreckage of the Hindenburg, Waldo Waterman's Aerobile flying car, and the NASA Space Shuttle Enterprise.

Carolyn Russo's precise black-and-white photographs describe the objects with startling clarity, elevating the images to the status of portraits. Each photograph is complemented by the story of the object, bringing to life the history of flight. The book's crisp, cutting-edge design makes reading Artifacts of Flight a lively and satisfying voyage in itself.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Hula !.......2001-02-16

Having visited Hawaii a couple of years ago and having fallen in love with its fantastically diverse landscapes, traditions and cultures, I wondered how I could bring a little of the magic home with me. Learning to hula sounded like the ideal way to continue enjoying Hawaii and since there are no local classes available here,in England, this book has been ideal. The book combines the traditions of Hula dancing along with a brief philosophy in an easy-to-follow context, great for beginners, setting out the key steps required to complete a selection of dances for a variety of occasions. Beautiful colour photographs, showing arm and body movements are used throughout, accompanied by basic instructions and ideas for costumes and lei designs. There is a short glossary at the end and a selection of suggested Hawaiian songs to which the dances can be performed. The book is easy to use, thanks to its clear presentation and instructions and the photographs in themselves are beautiful. Related topics that I have looked into further, have included the making of leis and the history of Hawaii with its legends.

3 out of 5 stars jam packed, but tiny.......2007-05-11

Of course a pocket guide will be small, but for a small book, this one is stuffed with information. Its not as good as an instructor, or a DVD where one can actually see the movements, but it does a good job for its medium.

Foot work such as the "kaholo" and the "lele" are mapped out via foot prints (like those mats for learning box-step) which is nice and clear. Hip work such as the "ka'o" and "ami" are line drawings and are much less clear. Then, basic hand movements are shown with photographs and simple lyrics printed beneath them, these are also easy to follow.

The majority of the book is choreography to 7 "traditional" songs (post-Elvis era) so the movements can be practiced in context. There is a lyric sheet and a glossery.

The down side is that you basicly have to memorize the first half of the book, which is pretty technical, before the choreography will be of any use to you. And there is no music to go with the songs.

A supplement to your hula collection, but certianly not the ultimate resource.

"A wonderful accomplishment. . . . The power is in the writing. Mr. Meno is a superb craftsman."-Hubert Selby Jr.

"The author moves the story along at a surprisingly fast and easy pace. The evil eyes of small-town America seem to peer from every page of Meno's claustrophobic noir, where the good and the bad are forced down the same violent paths."-Kirkus Reviews

"Joe Meno writes with the energy, honesty, and emotional impact of the best punk rock."-Jim DeRogatis, pop music critic, Chicago Sun-Times

"Fans of hard-boiled pulp fiction will particularly enjoy this novel." -Booklist

A young ex-con in a small Illinois town. A lonely giant with a haunted past. A beautiful girl with a troubled heart. Strange and darkly magical, How the Hula Girl Sings begins exactly where most pulp fiction usually ends, with the vivid episode of the terrible crime itself. Three years later, Luce Lemay, out on parole for the awful tragedy, does his best to finds hope: in a new job at the local Gas-N-Go; in his companion and fellow ex-con, Junior Breen, who spells out puzzling messages to the unquiet ghosts of his past; and finally, in the arms of the lovely but reckless Charlene. How the Hula Girl Sings is a suspenseful exploration of a country bright with the far-off stars of forgiveness and dark with the still-looming shadow of the death penalty.

            3 out of 5 stars dissatisfaction.......2006-05-17

I seem to be the lone voice on this, but I found this book to be a real disappointment. The dialogue was often too elaborate and misplaced, making the conversations unrealistic. Other parts, such as the sheriff "calling a doctor" and telling the characters to escape town, rather than take them to a hospital and try arresting the offenders, just got me plain mad because of the implausibility. However, the thing that really capped off my dislike for the book was Meno's constant repetition in description.

"No dainty gloom could make a body feel more lonesome than missing a tooth. It made me feel improper to smile. Losing that molar over a girl who wouldn't even spare me a kiss made me feel like the imperial king of all fools. Nothing else could make me feel so low."

After reading iterative writing like that, extended to 209 pages, I felt like taking a thesaurus and bashing the author in the head with it.

This book, every component of it, was a disgrace to the literary accomplishments Meno created in Hairstyles of the Damned.

4 out of 5 stars Lyrical, Poetic Neo-Noir.......2005-10-09

HTHGS is a lyrical, poetic chronicle of a recently paroled felon's return to small town America. Mr. Meno writes with a dark, terse voice which captures the reader's attention. This trip inside a off-kilter, violent and sometimes insane world left me wanting more. A pure and thoughtful exploration of guilt and love in a world with little room for either.

            5 out of 5 stars POW! now that's what i call a story!.......2001-11-15

This book is the type that I find few and far between. Without so much as blinking i was already through the first hundred pages. Since i have a very short attention span, you can see why this is a big deal. This book made me not want to sleep, eat, or do anything to deter me from its pages. When it was over I was left sated but wishing there were a thousand more pages to come. Luce Lemay's auspicious heart, dealt a hard luck hand, kept me filled with hope, wonder and awe. Even after a month since I finished it, I still can't help but wonder what old Luce is doing now.

            5 out of 5 stars A great surprise!.......2001-11-08

This book was quite a surprise to me.
In college I became deeply infatuated with a
certain style of writing—that of such Southern
            writers as William Faulkner, Flannery
            O'Conner and especially Carson McCullers.
Joe Meno carries on this great Southern gothic
tradition in his new book How the Hula Girl
            Sings.
            Meno creates a claustrophobic
            small town seething with sickness
and hate. He fills it with characters such as
an abusive father whose feet were eaten by
gangrene, a woman who kills small animals
and nails them to her walls in hand-crocheted
sweaters so that she can mourn them, and a
back stabbing ex-con who fashioned his fake
            teeth out of gravel.
While this book is not a traditional
mystery I believe that it is well worth the read.
The story moves along at a good pace and is
extremely engaging. (The Librarian, 5 cats)

5 out of 5 stars You should really read this book.......2001-11-02

What can I say? This is just an excellent read. Meno combines the quick, tight story movement of a pulp novel with a poet's view of the world. The language is simple but moving. Combine all that with some solid, fascinating, very human characters, finish it up with a powerhouse ending and you know what you got? One hell of a book.

                            Book Description

As one of the pioneering scholars in the discipline of Africana Studies, John Henrik Clarke spent majority of his adult life, researching, rescuing, constructing debating, and preserving the study of African world history. His unique style and analysis postured from a Pan Africanist perspective, is one of the lasting contributions Clarke dispensed to students and life long learners.

This volume is a compilation of unpublished critical essays solicited by selected scholars and reprinted articles of Clarke. The subject categories are in the subject areas of: Critical essays, Black Nationalism, Africana thought and biography, Africana historiography, narratives, and global Pan Africanist political thought. Moreover, in reviewing the scholarship of Clarke, he sequentially queried the privilege of selected cultural groups and the systematic subordination of others. Indeed, these questions regulate the parameters of who decides who gets what and why Clarke was concerned about issues of equity, but prioritized issues and schema of moral and ethical behavior of humans. Still with and ardent and critical analysis concerning the status of Africa world affairs, Clarke was a humanist, who dedicated himself to the advance the social, political, and economic condition of African people throughout the world.
