Customer Reviews:
Lots of information and terrific photos.......2005-02-21
An excellent book! Pictures are all exquisite - very close-up so you can really see what different bats look like. In addition to the terrific pictures, the text is also superb. The writing style and level of detail makes it perfect for someone like me who does not have a science background per se but is really interested in learning more about bat behavior, their anatomy and their needs. Bats from around the world are included here. Topics such as migration, feeding habits, flight, echolocation and hibernation are covered. This is more than just an overview of bats in general though, there are examples specific to bats that we might see. For example in the section on what bats eat, there's info on the Little Brown Bat and the fact that it tends to eat small aquatic insects versus Big Brown Bats tending to eat June beetles, etc
Batty for bats.......2001-12-01
Did you know that studying bats can teach also teach us about humans? Those with poor sight are often labeled "blind as a bat" but the simple fact is that these small animals do have eyes and several species (like the flying foxes) see well, thank you very much. So what do they do when their echolocation "sees" one thing and their eyes tell them something different? What role does color play?
This book is filled with neat information, scientific questions, and gorgeous color photographs that kids will love. The book is divided into seven chapters on everything from the basic lure of bats, their auditory "vision" and what they eat to where they live, how they look and how to conserve them.
The rich photographs show all kinds of fruit, insect-eating and vampire bats, feeding and in their roosts all over the world.
The book closes with four brief sections on bat classifications, anatomy, scientific and common names, and other books and technical publications about bats.
The type is fairly large, and the text is both scientific easy enough for independent readers aged 10 and up.
For kids who like nonfiction or nature this book is a must. And it will teach them to love these important animals, too long maligned. Alyssa A. Lappen
Excellent primer for new bat lovers.......1999-05-12
This book has great pictures and is full of many interesting, little-known facts about bats, without being too simple. Perfect for a new bat lover, or to introduce less bat-friendly people to the diversity and value of bats.
If you or your child is interested in bats, get this!.......1999-01-26
This book is great! I has alot of close and detailed pictures. It gives a really nice description on each species as well. I enjoy it, as well as my 5 year old.

skip this and buy the unofficial guide.......2007-05-17
like many others, i bought this book expecting to find the inside tips on luxurious activities at disney world. but this book just reads like a regular guide book. and as a regular guide book, i don't feel that it is as comprehensive or useful as sehlinger's unofficial guide. to make matters worse, the info in this book is several years out of date. sehlinger's books are updated every year.
A Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World?????.......2006-09-30
First, let me say that the book is well written and I love the gray boxes that pop up here and there with little tips for romance, etc.
The rest of this book is like a condensed version of any other Walt Disney World guide book out there. When she does mention the luxuries it is simply a list of her favorites which includes Universal Studios, Sea World and the Downtown Disney hotels.
I thought, (given the title) this book is about Walt Disney World.
I would really have liked to read more about the luxurious side of Disney World. In this book you will walk away knowing just as much about a counter service restaurant in the Magic Kingdom as you would about Victoria and Albert's. The website does not offer much more in the way of information either.
Very disappointed.
I highly recommend Walt Disney World and Orlando 2007 from Frommer's - worth every penny!
Luxury Guide should include luxury activities.......2006-07-14
I purchased this guide to add to my collection of DIsney World travel books, and I was quite disappointed. From the book descriptions I was expecting a guide to all the luxurious activities and experiences available at the resort with great detail. This guide skims over most Disney attractions and does not provide any information that is not available via disney's website. I would like to see more details and even ballpark prices on some activities. Personal experience testimonies would also benefit the listings in this book.
There was nothing really luxury about this book.......2005-02-08
This book was basically the same as most of the other books on Disney. It is just compiled into one book. This book claims to tell you how to get the most out of your disney vacation and it doesn't do that. Actually the best information I have ever found on Disney and the most up-to-date information was found on All Ears Net dot Com. It has more information than you could find in any book and best of all is free.
Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World.......2004-12-31
I am so glad I purchased The Luxury Guide to Walt Disney World. I used this book on our trip to Disney World December 2004. I was guided to order tickets ahead of time for the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Parade and the Candlelight Christmas Dinner Package. This helped us get to choose which day we wanted for each show and no worries about missing anything!! My family and I got to see Jim Caviezel and it was GREAT!! I highly recommend this book to any family going to Disney World. Patti from Alabama

The Non-Designer's Design Book
ASIN: 0766813622 |
Book Description
Read the Prose. Study the illustrations. And apply what you have learned to design your own pages. It's easy with Basics of Design; Typography and Layout for Beginners! This heavily illustrated, compact guide is ideal for readers with no graphic design or art education background who need to create first-rate visual page designs. Entrepreneurs challenged with designing their own business cards, and administrative assistants suddenly put in charge of producing newsletters and fax cover pages, are just two examples of readers who benefit from the information in this primer. Its uniquely conversational tone - combined with numerous "before" and "after" illustrations- provides everything needed to design pages as effective as those of professional designers. Part One introduces readers to important design principles, as well as how to use color and images to add impact to designs. Part Two concentrates on the basics of typography. Part Three features a number of common design projects of the variety frequently assigned to non-designers (.., company business cards, fax cover letters, graphical and statistical reports, and more). To further aid readers, each project is accompanied by a brief listing of some of the special considerations involved in that type of visual page design. The final chapter of the book lists useful design books and resources for readers interested in advancing their typography and layout skills.
Customer Reviews:
Using Book for Graphic Design begin class.......2006-02-23
There are just enough illustrations. The chapters are setup in a way to support teaching a begining Graphic Design class. Exercises, a mini quiz and examples are built into each chapter-subject of good basic design.
Book lays flat when going through the pages and the binding should hold up through many page turning days.
A complete disappointment.......2005-10-25
The book contaings a whole lot of reading but very little illustration. I do not understand how the author anticipated to convey design, layout and typography by writing about it only. A book like this must be full of illustration. To write about design without illustrating them is an oxymoron. I would definitely not recommend this book for beginners.
Excellent Primer on Design.......2005-09-28
This book takes you through the basics of the page design process, focusing in each chapter on one of a number of themes such as contrast, repetition and alignment (and several others). I'm not an expert but have designed pages off and on for some years and this book was a breath of fresh and inspirational air. It is clear, useful, has loads of examples and, above all, it had an instant impact on my page designs from CV to web page to software interface to data sheet. Highly recommended. As comparison, I bought another book at the same time on typography, didn't learn a thing about design, and set it aside having suffered pages of historical theory.
The perfect starting point........2004-09-13
There is not much mistaking the purpose of this book judging from the title. It is for beginners, and it delivers admirably. Graham takes the reader step by step and in a very systematic way through the basic tenets of graphic design. Each chapter deals with a specific aspect of design and how the reader can use it to communicate more effectively. Graham gives plenty of examples of what to do as well as what not to do and the text is well illustrated, though it could have used more examples in color. That is a small criticism though and one that does not really detract from the book in any way. The beginning designer will come away from this book with a firm foundation in design and with skills that they will utilize for the rest of their career. If you are looking to learn about graphic design then this book is the perfect starting point.
Coherent and Accessible.......2004-02-19
A friend of mine recommended this book as a solid introduction to graphic design. The author, Lisa Graham, covers the principles of design effectively and even throws in some unexpectedly funny explanations that really make the point. For example, the beginning of the Balance chapter is hilarious and made me realize that a page really can make a person feel weird, if it isn't designed using the design principles. Once I read that balance chapter, I realized that many of her illustrations also were surprisingly humerous, and reveals what must be a delightful sense of humor.
If you buy this book, keep in mind that the humor is used to support the points Graham makes, and is not the sole focus of the book. This is after all a design book and makes some serious and informative points.
Perhaps what is most effective about this book is the thorough explanations she gives on why a design works and why it doesn't work. This is a refreshing change from many other introductory design books that I looked at where the primary focus of the text seemed to be to show off pretty pictures. Pretty pictures are nice, but WHY do the designs work? WHY don't they work. Basics of Design tells you why, and in such a wonderfully understandable way that you remember, and easily apply what Graham teaches.
Good job Lisa. When are you going to write more books on graphic design? I'll be sure to keep an eye out for more of your work!

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Info & Photos for Perthshire through 1997.......2007-03-30
I couldn't ask for a better reference ~ except wishing for an update from '97 until production ceased. This book is the most complete I've seen. Individual detailed descriptions include Perthshire's ID number, and many explanatory comments. The quality of the photographs is clear, crisp, and colors are true to actual weights. Most importantly, photos are large enough to show small details. Even if you never intend to buy a paperweight, this book is fascinating, educational and beautiful. Forty pages provide general information and 155 pages describe and illustrate the paperweights. There is a hardcover version, but the quality of this softcover, with its glossy paper, is certainly all I could ever need. I highly recommend this book for experienced collectors ~ and it is essential for novices!
Delicious.......2003-09-26

Book Description
Gardening has become much more than a hobby for many, and savvy nursery managers need an added edge to compete with the many retail outlets and superstores that now carry plants and gardening supplies. This guide discusses the beginning stages of opening a gardening business, from finding financing, choosing a location, and shaping a business plan to the advanced practicalities of running existing shops, including how to promote, display, and handle live goods. Also discussed are Web sites, creating flow, signage, fixtures, purchasing decisions, and employee management.
Customer Reviews:
Lives Up To Expectations.......2004-07-22
I disagree with the other reviewer who gave a 3 star rating due to "it's of some value if you're starting a Garden Center, but otherwise..."
A quick scan of the content plainly featured on the back cover of the book clearly defines itself. There is no illusion promoted that this book is anything other than a guide to opening a Garden Center and it simply takes you through all of the steps in a very logical, easy to read format.
However, there are quite a few points for even the most skilled and savvy GC operator they might not already know, like Faith Popcorn's consumer buying trends. The book was published in '01 so it is sufficiantly up to date.
Lastly, it is always a good idea to review the basics, especially when you might be looking at an expansion, or perhaps marketing yourself in a new, niche area that may require you to lose the assumptions and bias- and critically review things prior to taking the plunge.
Overall, very well written and easy to read.
Little more than okay.......2004-06-14
This book is a very basic look at garden center management. If you are new to the business, it could provide a good introduction, however, if you are already running or working at a garden center, there is little in here you likely do not already know.
Helpful hint: When this book was originally published, there was a printing error. My copy had a whole segment of pages which have been bound upside down. So if you buy this book, flip through and double check that all the pages are facing the right way up.

Book Description
The Bolero School is a book for both ballet and Spanish dancers. It is a journey through the history of the fascinating country of Spain, with its vibrant culture and people. The book is a fusion of fifty years of ballet and Spanish dance experience by the author as dancer, teacher, and director of Spanish dance performances for her own company in the USA and other countries. Grut endeavors to unlock and explain the many mysteries that surround this dance form for teachers, historians and lay readers. The connection to ballet is explored, especially to the style of the 19th century as found in the Cechetti method and in the work of August Bournonville. Also explored is the Bolero School's distinction from ballet that makes it so unique.

Book Description
Edited by Spanish musicologists Javier Suárez-Pajares and Xoán M. Carreira, The Origins of the Bolero School examines the social, artistic, and political contexts that led to the birth of "Spanish dance." The Bolero School arose from the encounter of popular forms of Spanish origin and elite forms of French and Italian origin in the last third of the eighteenth century. The subsequent occupation of Spain by the French during the Napoleonic Wars called a halt to this process of cultural hybridization, resulting in a dance idiom with a strong eighteenth-century, Spanish flavor. This complex story is told with grace and acumen in a book that exemplifies the best kind of multidisciplinary scholarship. Generously illustrated with period material, the volume is augmented by primary texts reproduced in their original Spanish, French, and English. The volume contains two source lists-of the "exotic" or foreign dancers active in Spain from 1750 to 1800, the other of ballets performed at Madrid's principal theaters in the 1780s and 1790s.

If you read only one Melba biography, let it be THIS one.......2004-07-25
Of all the Melba biographies, Therese Radic's is my favorite. Although she recounts facts and legends already recounted in the half-dozen Melba biographies that preceded hers, she has a more expansive view, seeing the big picture and placing Melba squarely in the context of her time and place. In addition to the work of Hetherington, Colson, Murphy and Moran (whose Melba compendium appeared at almost the same time as Radic's "Melba: The Voice of Australia"), Radic seems to have had access to several individuals who knew Melba, at least one of whom remained anonymous. It was that source who supplied the fascinating information, published here for the first time, that Melba's fatal infection was the result of a facelift, from which she contracted erysipelas, not from some mysterious illness contracted on the Nile or watercress she ate in London.
Giving credit where it is due, Radic draws upon her predecessors, particularly upon Hetherington, who will always hold pride of place for being the first to sift through the accumulated and hazy Melba legend to get to the facts, but Radic always seems to be able to go a step further, to find another angle. For example, in discussing Melba's famous and fateful attempt at the "Siegfried" Brunhilde, Radic emphasizes that it was Melba's first role in German, her Elizabeth and Elsa being in French and Italian. For Melba, whose technique was based on Italian and French vowels, the foray into German may have been as deadly as the strenuous vocal demands of the role. Previous authors either pass over that fact quickly or omit it all together.
Radic compares versions of stories and suggests which might be more accurate and often uses side text to present extended quotes from other authors, paralleling her text with both alternate and supporting versions. Her prose is concise but never dry and the book is illustrated with numerous pictures. The Appendices include Melba's roles, dates of her performances at the MET, Oscar Hammerstein's Manhattan Opera House and Covent Garden as well as her tours in 1912-13 and 1913-14. Also included is a complete discography.
If you read only one Melba biography, this should be the one.

Book Description
It wasn't enough for Melba to become one of the greats of the Golden Age of Grand Opera. She wanted to be the greatest. her glorious voice took her to the top; her ruthless determination to overthrow any rival kept her there long after the voice had begun to decline. Revealed in this relentlessly candid yet sympathetic study is Melba the drama queen, the monstrous prima donna, the canny businesswoman, the generous and kindly friend, the unique star who refused to fade.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent portrait of a fascinating opera star.......2004-07-08
Before Hetherington's exhaustive study of the legendary opera star, Nellie Melba, the available resources ranged from exaggerated to false. Not that Dame Nellie helped matters much; besides being a legendary singer, she had the marketing instincts of Martha Stewart and succeeded in creating quite a bit of self-myth that appeared and reappeared in newspapers, magazines and biographies. The 1909 biography by her secretary Agnes Murphy, a ghost-written autobiography by Beverly Nichols and a biography by Percy Colson, which appeared in 1932, a year after Melba's death, could all be described as "Melba's life the way she'd like us to remember it." Also in 1932, Nichols published "Evensong", a novel whose unpleasant, selfish and domineering central character is obviously intended to be Melba. Within a year "Evensong" appeared as a play and a film. A willing public accepted Nichols's fiction as fact. MGM's film, "Melba", and a 1961 centenary biography by Joseph Wechberg did nothing to dispel the well-entrenched myth.
Hetheringon succeeds in cutting away this accumulated legend to paint a balanced portrait of the complex Nellie Melba, a study well-grounded in solid research and primary sources. In clear and very readable prose, he presents a woman with a superior vocal talent and intense ambition, a stubborn woman dedicated to hard work and convinced that if you wanted something done right, you had to do it yourself. That Hetherington has a detailed knowledge of his subject is obvious. Occasionally he seems overly critical, though that may be an attempt to remain impartial.
The book contains numerous photos of Melba, some posed and in costume, and a few candid, the latter scarce as Melba rarely allowed candid photos of herself. For anyone who would like a detailed portrait of this remarkable Australian, this is an excellent place to start.
