3 out of 5 stars Far from perfect.......2004-10-11

The reviews previous to mine only seem to address Santa Fe, and perhaps that portion of the book is more accurate. But I went to Taos and was bitterly disappointed by unfortunate inaccuracies. Inspirations doesn't serve sandwiches on the weekends, a detail the book left out. "Tiwa Kitchen" is actually "Tewa Kitchen", and though it wasn't the book's fault never opened on the day I wanted to go. Zen Ranch went out of business, and I'd really been looking forward to eating there. One restaurant I went to for the much ballyhooed huevos rancheros looked at me as though I had sprouted horns - not exactly a friendly establishment. It might have been nice to know about the nightly indian dance demonstrations at Kachina Lodge, which is the only regular demonstration performed by Pueblo indians in town, or Wired? Coffee House, which is actually a lot cooler than Cafe Tazza and offers free wi-fi. Overall, it felt as though the author had really rushed through, and perhaps some of the places she raves about were only nice to her because she told them that what she was writing.

      5 out of 5 stars Great guide.......2004-06-08

I am a frequent user of Lonely Planet books. Santa Fe & Taos is no different then the others, very insightful, very useful, and very easy to use. It gave great recommendations for restaurants, and for day trips, and I particularly enjoy the suggested 1 day, 2 day, 3 day... itineraries, based on the duration of your stay.
      I highly recommend it.

      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide.......2004-04-02

I just returned from my first trip to Santa Fe. I solely depended upon the Lonely Planet (Santa Fe/Taos) guide to help me navigate/acquaint myself to Santa Fe and the surrounding areas. It was a wonderful resource and would recommend it highly to anyone traveling to Santa Fe, as I could not find my thing lacking in it. Oh, do visit the Chocolate Smith in Santa Fe. As the author noted, they have wonderful organic chocolate to please any chocolatophile (is that a word?).

      Book Description

On September 11th horrific events occurred, yet through the simple text and vibrant art of first graders, we are reminded that the world continued the next day. On each page, children experience the comforts of ordinary routines, such as their teacher reading books to them, having homework and recess, and knowing that 2 + 2 still equals 4. This is a poignant message of hope that reassures us all that even after bad things happen, tomorrow always brings a new day.

This book does two things...it allows the young child to know what happened on September 11, 2001 and it gives that child comfort in knowing that everything will be all right. This book, is a book worthy of reading aloud to children who question what September 11 is aboutor asks the question of why is there so much news coverage on this particular day...if you are a parent or teacher looking for the right words, then let this book speak for you...it was written by a group of first graders and I appauld them for doing a great job. Although I don't like to bring up the day to young children and wouldn't but when they turn 10 and start asking questions about this day and the events surrounding it then; I think this book is great to answer those questions without too many gory details.

5 out of 5 stars Wishing it was still being Published.......2006-10-28

I am currently in the process of becoming a teacher... I will be student teaching in the Spring. The week of September 11th this year, one of my teachers read this book to all of us in one of my education classes. All 26 people in my class fell in love with this book, and we were all greatly disappointed to find out that the book is no longer being published. And I was horrified at the prices that the used books are being sold at. This is a wonderful book with a great message, and it too bad that you cannot get it at a reasonable price anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Message of Hope.......2006-09-09

I have to offer a rebuttal for the last review I saw entitled "Teaching Self-centeredness". Obviously, our lives did not magically become ok on September 12, 2001. I don't believe that it was this book's intention to imply that. This book provided a much needed message of hope and healing for both children and adults. The book can be used to guide a discussion about the events of September 11th, the loss that was felt, and how our country pulled together for healing and recovery. All Americans were affected in some way that day. This is a wonderful book to use with children. My first graders had very thoughtful, heartfelt responses to this book.

      1 out of 5 stars Teaching self-centeredness.......2006-08-27

It is my sincere hope that no one will read this book to their child or to their class since it is such an affront to the idea of America as one country. I am glad that those children were safe on September 12, but in reality, in New York, people were still looking for their loved ones, rubble was still smoldering and many families had not even begun to know how to continue. The lesson of "because it didn't happen to me the world is okay" is not the lesson I want my child to learn. Would the publisher even dream of selling a post-Katrina book called "August 31 - Our House Didn't Get Flooded So We Knew We Would Be All Right"? Of course not.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully done!.......2004-09-15

This book is so heart warming. I purchased it for my classroom and I feel it will be a wonderful addition to help children understand that they are still safe and ok here at school and in America. Seeing this perspective through children's eyes is truely refreshing.

        Book Description

DISCOVER THE CULT OF THE GOLDFISH THROUGH JAPANESE ART, DESIGN AND LITERATURE

Goldfish were originally brought to Japan from China in 1502, to be raised exclusively by aristocrats as highly prized pets. In the 1800s, however, they became popular among the general public, and ultimately a unique culture of breeders, collectors, and connoisseurs came into being. Packed with
photographs, Kingyo: The Artistry of Japanese Goldfish offers a delightful visual tour of goldfish in Japanese art and design, together with a description of the goldfish breeds that have developed in Japan over hundreds of years of meticulous cultivation.

Included in the volume is a novella written in the 1930s titled A Riot of Goldfish which tells of the impossible love of a breeder's son for the daughter of a wealthy patron. As his love grows into an obsession, he attempts to create a goldfish that will capture and reflect her beauty. The story
charmingly evokes life in Japan in the early twentieth century and sheds light on the aesthetics of goldfish appreciation.

The stunning visual materials presented here reveal the vast iconography of goldfish in the graphic and decorative arts of Japan, extending to textiles, ceramics, paintings, lacquer ware, toys, and even household items. This book will be an inspiration for designers, collectors, and anyone
        interested in Japanese art.

I have been a lover of goldfish since early childhood...So,I am biased,I suppose...But what a book this one is.As an artist who has produced well over ten thousand goldfish related art objects, I though I was "fished out"....No way...I saw this book in the "rael" at a bookstore here in the city, and I couldn't beleive how this book thrilled me.I went home, saw it on Amazon, for about 50 dollars can. less than the bookshop had it for, and I ordered it fast....
This is really an art book, with a Japanese eye to goldfish...There's plenty of stories, info, etc, but the best is how everything presented gives this book the feeling of uniqueness. It is as though it is a one of a kind, artist's personal journal, sometimes very sweet, sometimes funny, and quietly spectacular in it's visual presentation...
If you are an artist who loves anything japanese,You have got to get this.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos and art.......2007-03-08

As a huge fan of fancy goldfish, I was pleased with this book. The cover and interior are lovely, with hundreds of photographs and art samples.

However, the book would be MUCH better if it was larger. As it is, the photographs are often stuck in the spine of the book, difficult to see.

        5 out of 5 stars A Veiw of History & Now........2006-11-10

Every page contains a visual feast, it's a history of the art/love for fancy's from those that are continuing the tradition.
A bonus of a short story again giving the meaning of fancy's in their lifes.
No care/health/tank maintaining ect. facts pick one of the dozens out.

5 out of 5 stars A visual riot of goldfish.......2004-12-15

When it comes to artistic and exotic Japanese fish, for most people Koi is the first thing to spring to mind, if anything. A Japanese garden would not seem complete without a few of those large, gold beauties swimming elegantly under a moon-curved bridge. Some might be reminded of the Betta, often called a Japanese Fighting Fish (Or a Chinese Fighting Fish, or a Siamese Fighting Fish, or any-other-Asian-country Fighting Fish...) Rarely would one think of a goldfish.

Goldfish (Kingyo, in Japanese) are as much of an element of Japanese art as koi, cranes, cherry blossoms and white-faced courtesans. Like these, they are appreciated both for their natural beauty as well as their representational picturation. "Kingyo: The Artistry of Japanese Goldfish" explores both of these sides, showcasing the many wonders of the long tradition of goldfish breeding as well as the influence of goldfish design in all aspects of Japanese art, be they ceramics, Ukiyo-e prints, kimonos, children's toys or sword guards.

The photographs of the fish themselves are simply gorgeous. Set against a stark white background, all of the varieties of these highly-cultured living art-objects can be admired, from the calico ryukins to the bizarre suihogan with their giant bubble-like cheek pockets. Some breeds are more easily-appreciated than others, but all of these magnificent photographs show what they have to offer to full advantage. Rather than encumber these images with text, the information of the many breeds is bundled together near the rear of the book.

Along with the actual fish, there is a gallery of pretty much every conceivable type of Japanese art, emblazoned with goldfish. Fine ceramic dishes with subtle patterns, bright and inviting kimonos making the most of the golden color, carrying cases for tobacco and medicine, metal work such as sword guards and silver hairpins; there is clearly not an aspect of art that has remained untouched by these little swimmers. My personal favorites is the collection of Ukiyo-e prints, showing the people of Japan, high and low, enjoying the artistry of Japanese goldfish, from children scooping at them during fairs (an activity still popular in Japan today) to the moneyed classes displaying their latest acquisitions and exotic breeds.

In addition to this, there is a 63-page novella, "A Riot of Goldfish," translated from Japanese and showing the goldfish's influence and writing as well. The story is a fascinating tale of obsession, both in love and in attempting to breed the perfect goldfish. Matachi, the young goldfish breeder is swallowed whole by his art, as he attempts to express his love for the unattainable Masako, using living creatures as his medium. It is an unexpected and welcome addition to what is otherwise a picture book.

I really enjoyed "Kingyo: The Artistry of Japanese Goldfish," much more so than I thought I would before I first picked it up. It made me a convert to the beauty of goldfish.

5 out of 5 stars Good book on flower essences + animals (limited to Bach only, which is not good).......2006-12-15

I've studied flower essences for over ten years. I own several books on flower essences + animals, and this is in the top four. I use it all the time for my several cats.

However, I am giving this book only four stars. As nice as this book is, it is limited to ONLY Bach's original 39 flower essences mainly from England. Nowadays, flower essences are much more than the first 39, including flowers from North America (Northern California, deserts of Arizona and New Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida); Scotland; Australia bush; New Zealand; South Africa; South America; Central America; to mention a few. Bach died young in 1936, leaving his work unfinished, and many people in the last 70 years have taken up where he left off, much expanding the number and quality of essences (depending on where in the world the flowers are indigenous).

Frankly, books on Bach's first 39 flower essences are so ubiquitous that I now avoid them in favor of books covering flower essences from other parts of the world besides England. Plants of England are not the only plants in existence! I am REAL tired of books getting published involving only Bach's original 39 essences. Even though Bach "bumped into" his first 39 essences, Bach's essences are not the holy grail of flower essences! Look further afield than Bach's essences.

4 out of 5 stars Improving Your Cat's Life Naturally.......2001-08-31

Anyone wanting to improve the quality and increase the longevity of their feline companion's life should own this reference book. Based on the teachings of Dr. Edward Bach, a prominent physician in the early 1900s, who was concerned not only with the physical problems of his patients, but with their emotional outlook as well. This book reminds us that cats are as individual as humans--each with their own set of emotional and health issues. The 38 Bach Flower Essences are listed alphabetically, with a general description as well as specific behavioral traits exhibited by cats that each remedy could correct. Suggested remedies for humans having difficulty dealing with injured or ailing cats are also given. No previous knowledge or experience with flower essences is needed to start using this information immediately.

          Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The City Gardener's Handbook is the definitive guide to gardening in small spaces - whether on a balcony, in a container, or in a small yard - covering planting, design, and maintenance.

The problems and challenges facing gardeners in cities, suburban condos, or apartment complexes are unique, and Linda Yang has personally experienced every small-space gardening situation she writes about. Yang offers a wealth of practical advice on planning a garden that will be attractive all year long; selecting wind-, heat-, moisture-, or drought-tolerant species; and coping with pollutants, insects, and more. Charts and lists supply information on the best city plants for flowers, foliage, and fragrance, as well as ground covers, small weeping trees and dwarf shrubs, soil mixes for containers, and practical mulches. The updated mail-order source list is an essential tool for gardeners who find it difficult to locate plants and supplies. The City Gardener's Handbook is an invaluable resource for any gardener facing the challenge of growing plants where space is limited, whether in the dooryard of a suburban townhouse or on a mid-city rooftop.

                        Book Description

The function of dance in Latin/o American culture is the focus of the essays collected in Everynight Life. The contributors interpret how Latin/o culture expresses itself through dance, approaching the material from the varying perspectives of literary, cultural, dance, performance, queer, and feminist studies. Viewing dance as privileged sites of identity formation and cultural resistance in Latin/o America, Everynight Life translates the motion of bodies into speech, and the gestures of dance into a provocative socio-political grammar.
This anthology looks at many modes of dance—including salsa, merengue, cumbia, rumba, mambo, tango, samba, and norteño—as models for the interplay of cultural memory and regional conflict. Barbara Browning’s essay on capoeira, for instance, demonstrates how dance has been used as a literal form of resistance, while José Piedra explores the meanings conveyed by women of color dancing the rumba. Pieces such as Gustavo Perez Fírmat’s "I Came, I Saw, I Conga’d" and Jorge Salessi’s "Medics, Crooks, and Tango Queens" illustrate the lively scope of this volume’s subject matter.

                          Book Description

In May 1769, soon after our return from Turkey, our ship made a delightful voyage to Oporto in Portugal, where we arrived at the time of the carnival. On our arrival, there were sent on board to us thirty-six articles to observe, with very heavy penalties if we should break any of them; and none of us even dared to go on board any other vessel or on shore till the Inquisition had sent on board and searched for every thing illegal, especially bibles. Such as were produced, and certain other things, were sent on shore till the ships were going away; and any person in whose custody a bible was found concealed was to be imprisoned and flogged.

                            Book Description

Olaudah EquianoÂ's capture by slave-traders at the age of ten took him from life in what is now Eastern Nigeria and thrust him on a fateful journey that would submerge him in an incomprehensible world. He emerged a gifted writer and has provided insights into centuries of slave trading and why the relationship between black and white seems always in favor of white. First published in 1789, EquianoÂ's engaging narrative, written in English, describes his life before and after his capture—looking forward to recognition as a descendant of a chief; working on slave ships; traveling to the southern states of America, the West Indies, Europe, and the Arctic; and fighting a war. He eventually grew to be an extremely confident man who, even in the worst slavery imaginable, never lost his sense of purpose or his humanity. After buying his freedom, he was an ardent supporter of abolishing slavery. Written with a sense of literary history, EquianoÂ's account corrects wrong impressions about Africa and explores what it is like for an African to find himself suddenly alien in a world that considers Africans as not quite human.

4 out of 5 stars History of the others.......2005-12-29

The African slave trade is one of the great stains of human history. Much has been written about it by European - white authors, though unfortunately, there are very few recollections of the slave trade by actual slaves. This book is one of those works. The author, Olaudah Equiano, was born in Nigeria and captured as a child and sold of to slavery in the New World. He eventually accummulated enough money to free and educate himself, and make his way thru the world as a free man. This book is his story, told by himself. He retells his kidnapping, his trip from Africa to N. America, his service to different masters, how he bought his own freedom, and then his life as a free man. He retells both the punishments he endured, the work he had to do, and the opportunities denied to him while he was a slave. Overall, a good book to read about the life of a slave.

I'm not sure if the person below read the book. Equiano was 11 when he was enslaved.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in the horror of slavery.......1997-12-06

An amazing story of an amazing man. Olaudah Equiano tells the story of his life with such clarity and recollection it is hard to put this book down. A slave, who at the age of 7, was kidnapped from his village in Africa and subsequently enslaved for 11 years until which time he could buy his freedom. His life was filled with both horror and wonder. He witnessed great events and horrific injustices. He tells these tales with clarity and an unusual objectiveness. A boy, who at age 7, did not read or write or even know of the white man. Olaudah grew to learn and have great command of the language in which he would retell his tales. This is not only an impressive work, it is more so coming from a former slave. It is a must read for everyone interested in the struggle for life that these people endured for over two centuries.
