Fantastic Guide for a Fantastic Park.......2007-09-19
I bought this book based on the opinions of the previous reviewers. They were absolutely right. I spent 2 days at Yosemite and due to the massive size of the park (1,200 square miles) it would have been impossible for me to get a good tour of Yosemite without this guidebook. I found this book quite useful, from reading about the geology/history of the area, lodging to descriptions of the intensity of the hikes. The book also provides some helpful traveling tips as well suggestions for additional reading. It's a very comprehensive guide.
A great resource, guidebook and dreamweaver.......2006-09-09
Moon Travel Books presents a spectacular and thoroughly updated, 256 page, second edition on Yosemite National Park. Beginning with 10 pages of color coded maps of Yosemite and a breathtaking color photo of Yosemite Falls, Yosemite packs a plethora of detailed information into an organized, easily accessible format. The first five chapters cover Yosemite Valley, Wawona and Glacier Point, Tioga Pass and Tuolumne Meadows, Hetch Hetchy, and the Eastern Sierra, including Lee Vining, Mono Lake and North, and June Lake and Mammoth Lake. Each of these chapters is divided into sections on exploring and recreation. The final four chapters are about Lodging, Camping, Dining, and Knowing Yosemite. There is a vast list of suggested reading and several pages of internet resources, in addition to tips for travelers, notes on the history of Yosemite and its place names, and much useful and specific information on the flora and fauna of Yosemite National Park. Specific information bytes or special tips are highlighted and blocked to set them off for the eye of the reader. If your plans include a trip to Yosemite, Yosemite is a "must buy" travel guide. Even if you just want to learn more about Yosemite and indulge in some armchair dreaming of travels in Yosemite, this is a great resource, guidebook and dreamweaver.
The best guide to Yosemite I could find.......2006-05-11
Before I visit a national park I go to the library for a pile of books to help me plan my trip. With a visit to Yosemite in mind I did just that and came home with a very nice collection including "100 Hikes...", "The Rough Guide to Yosemite" and Ann Marie Brown's "Yosemite" guide. While all of these books have great content, Ann's was far and away the most approachable and the one I bought to dog ear and write copious notes in without guilt. I'm so glad I did.
The book is well-indexed making it super easy to find what you need, the maps are great and the descriptions of the surrounding area are a bonus. Ann provides readers with well-thought out itineraries geared toward meeting your needs based on how much time you have to visit the park (from a day to a week) and your primary interests (from hiking to bagging waterfall pix). She also supplies solid advice regarding what to do if your on your own or travelling with a family.
Clearly Ann knows what she's writing about. Her first hand experience will help you find the motivation you need to get out of the car (or off of the bus) and on to the trails to drink in the beautiful and wonderful place that is Yosemite.
Review of the Second Edition: All you need for your Trip!.......2006-02-27
I wish I had had this book when I first went to Yosemite a decade ago. It would have saved a lot of time and gotten me and my wife to more of the true highlights in the area. This book covers everything from the best trails to the best dining options in and near the park. It lists all the campgrounds in and around the park and notes which require reservations and which are available on a first come-first served basis. And of course it includes a lot of natural and human history in the park region. The book also features some nice full color maps.
What I particularly like about this guide is the organization. Each section (recreation, lodging, camping, etc) is subdivided into various park regions: Yosemite Valley, Hetch Hetchy, Wawona, Tioga Pass and the Eastern Sierra. As a result, readers have a clearer picture of all that Yosemite National Park has to offer. After reading this book, I will be exploring more of Hetch Hetchy on my next visit in early April. This guide is simply the most comprehensive look at Yosemite and is a must for planning vacations around.
perfect partner.......2005-09-23
This book was one of a few I used to plan and experience Yosemite. Time and time again I pulled this book out over the others as the writeups and descriptions were always correct. The little added extras on each place made the experience even fuller. I love knowing about the history and little fun facts about a hike or a place to eat or stay. I would recommend this to anyone going to Yosemite for the first time or 500 time. Her list of additional references also was handy and I continue to grow my library. I have used her reference guides in the past and was always happy with the information. The waterfalls guide is like a checklist for my weekend activities. The one thing that I did like better in other references was the color maps and highlights, it made it easier to reference things in the book.

An o k handbook, but a much better fire starter...........2001-11-24
I was given this book by a good friend of mine for my 67th birthday last October. A good friend, a man with good taste and a great sense and wonder for the outdoors. But I must be candid about this book. It simply sucks. Kim Keir is not only biased, but is a poor writer who lacks scope and detail in her descriptions of the great Northern Cal.
Encyclopedic, but biased.......1999-04-17
In general Moon travel guides are encyclopedic, and "Northern California Handbook" at nearly 800 pages of fine print is not an exception. Hotels and restaurants are subjectively described rather than rated, which I find preferable to the AAA approach. I purchased the guidebook for a visit to the "gold country", and unfortunately found it to be offensive. It refers to miners as "barbarians"and "lustful legions", refers to use of pig latin by miners as "hog" latin, refers to the 1849 gold rush as "the peak years of greed", hard rock mining is refered to as a "corporate raid", hard rock miners are described as being "like monstrous moles burrowing ... to bleed ancient veins", describes the very pleasant and beautiful Malakoff Diggins State Park as "horrifying" and "ghoulish", calls mining "land rape". The author gleefully describes bigotry toward Chinese miners, but is apparently oblivious of her own prejudice toward non-Asian miners--many of whom were Latin Americans (including Mexicans among others), free Black Americans, and Cherokee Indians from Georgia. It is not at all clear that Chinese miners were less "greedy" nor otherwise morally superior to non-Asian miners. Indeed far more Chinese miners were injured and killed in tong wars among themselves than by non-Asians. I am part Native American myself, and I personally have a deep seated pro-Asian prejudice as a result of a very kindly Chinese neighbor when I was a small child, but I manage to avoid expressing such prejudice in print, and certainly do not express it by denigrating non-Asians and non-Native Americans

Short, but many great pictures.......2002-02-27
In 1990, while climbing a mountain in Peru, Anthropologist and mountain climber Dr. Johan Reinhard found something astounding: the mummy of a young Inca girl. This short work is Dr. Reinhard's story. Chocked full of color pictures, this book makes a fascinating resource for anyone who is interested in the subject.
'Nita, Lovely Inca Maid.......2001-01-09
One day a 90 pound teenager put on clothes that had been specially made, had her hair braided and the plait tip tied to her waist, ate some vegetables, and climbed up Mount Ampato. Some five centuries later, veteran mountaineers Johan Reinhard and Miguel Zarate went for a walk on that same mountain and ended up DISCOVERING THE INCA ICE MAIDEN and two other mummies of children sacrificed to directly appeal on their community's behalf to the area's gods. With its compassionate and compelling storyline eloquently presented with anthropologist/author Dr. Reinhard's own stunning photographs, the book is an unforgettable read all on its own. But it also works particularly well with Janet Buell's ANCIENT HORSEMEN OF SIBERIA, James M. Deem's BODIES FROM THE BOG and HOW TO MAKE A MUMMY TALK, David Getz's FROZEN GIRL and FROZEN MAN, and Katie Roden's THE MUMMY.
Book Description
Mark Hampton, long regarded as the "First Decorator" for his work on the White House for former president George Bush, was one of America's most prominent interior decorators. His clients included Estée Lauder, the Saul Steinbergs, the Mike Wallaces, and the Henry Kissingers, to name only a few. For the people who knew him well, his reputation as a decorator was surpassed by his generosity as a friend. In his lifetime, Hampton painted hundreds of watercolors as gifts for the people who were closest to him. Mark Hampton: The Art of Friendship, by his widow, Duane Hampton, is a collection of 140 watercolors that reveal his wit, affection, and sophistication.
The paintings are whimsical, lighthearted, yet richly beautiful. Even though he often painted while talking on the phone to business contacts, taking care of his daughters, or packing to leave for the weekend, Hampton managed to create lasting impressions of the most fleeting moments of life. Including birthday cards; valentines; Christmas greetings; travel studies; portraits of friends, family members, and pets; garden scenes; still lifes; and homages, this collection is a memorable reflection of a lifetime of friendship.
Duane Hampton's introduction offers a loving and insightful portrait of her husband's life. Raised as a Quaker in a community of Friends in Indiana, Mark Hampton grew to understand that being a friend -- in the most universal sense -- is a vital part of our existence and is intimately linked with our everyday activities. He once wrote, "At least our private worlds can reward us with peace and pleasure." The watercolors in this collection prove that the rewards of the private world can be profound.
Mark Hampton: The Art of Friendship is a striking testimonial to the enduring power of friendship and an endearing collection of Mark Hampton's most personal artwork.

Perfect gift for friends.......2006-02-25
I have given this special, exquisite book to several best friends and they have been thrilled. I am about to order more because it makes such a lovely little gift. I did also buy one for myself!
Another Classic Mark Hampton Book.......2001-12-07
For those of us who love the wonderful watercolors of the late Mark Hampton, this book is essential. The watercolors in this book are of a very personal nature, whether interiors, architectural, or otherwise. I am pleased to own this book, and I will enjoy it as I do with the other two Mark Hampton books. Note that the price is somewhat steep (...), but given the way the other two books sell on the resale market for many times their list price, a good investment.
Product Description
Mark Hampton, beloved for his wit, erudition, and imagination, was one of America's foremost decorators. His clients included Estee Lauder, Saul Steinberg, Mike Wallace, Nancy and Henry Kissinger, Nan and Thomas Kempner, and Susan and Cather Burden, to name just a few. He was also known for giving watercolors to his friends. The recipients of the cards, Anne Bass, Lee Radziwell, Brooke Astor, Pamela Harriman, Bill Blass, and Mica Ertegun, among others, treasured his gifts. From Valentines to still lifes, from travel to animals, from gardens to interiors, his watercolors are as varied as they are beautiful.

too little for too much!.......2007-02-04
this book contains little useful information regarding koi keeping...
only a lot of big low resolution (some seem like taken with a cell phone) pics of koi. And of course the price...when I got this book I tought I was beeing scammed...for this money one could buy 5 other realy good books on koi! I realy don't know for whom is this book written. It has little information for begginers and no useful information for pros, only big pics! But you can find better ones on the net...and more information in the wikipedia section on koi...
The only good thing in this book is the paper quality!
The last koi book you'll ever need.......2005-10-04
This book is a work of art, replete with what seems like thousands of gorgeous full-page photos and art prints, as well as essays on a broad range of topics. It's definitely koi-centric, so don't expect a book on pond-building, but for the true aficionado this is a must-have.

Quartz family minerals.......2007-01-01
An excellent simply written book for all readers interested in quartz crystals and other varieties of quartz. Current when it was written, it contains much historical information of interest, although its mineralogy portion is outdated considering all the new knowledge about quartz. Always worth the purchase price tho. You will not find this book new, and will have to buy it used!

Very Helpful Book!.......2000-10-18
I found this book to be extremly helpful with my research. The numerous color photos are a real plus. I'd highly recommend this title.
What a well researched book. Very interesting.......1999-06-15
I have only recently begun to collect various minerals. I couldn't disagree more with this other reviewer. I found it to be very thorough, easy to understand, and helped me immediately in categorizing my collection. Well worth the price, and an invaluable reference book for years to come.
Just Doesn't Cut It........1997-03-24
Well, it's a nice book and all, but Mr. Krause has lost all objectivity in discussing the various minerals of the world. I was surprised that he completely overlooked gypsum--certainly one of the most useful minerals around (plaster products, fertilizer). Perhaps the author should spend less time using a thesaurus (trying to impress us?) and more time studying minerals and rocks

Book Description
It is a myth that roses demand chemicals and special care to grow, as Barbara Wilde demonstrates in her beautiful, groundbreaking book Growing Roses Organically. It contains an identification guide for more than 100 roses that are the best choices for organic gardening techniques, a month-by-month rose care calendar, and gardening information applicable to all U.S. climates.By choosing healthy varieties and those best suited to the organic garden, gently intervening when it comes to pest and disease problems, and using proper pruning and planting techniques, a lush garden filled with roses is within the reach of everyone from beginner to veteran gardener. For any gardener who has ever tried and failed to grow roses, for those intimidated by the care and feeding of these unique blooms, and for those committed to the organic way, Growing Roses Organically was written just for them. Including garden designs that pair roses with perennials, wildflowers, trees, and shrubs, it is a one-of-a-kind exploration of how the simple makes the spectacular.
Customer Reviews:
Not the greatest how-to book for roses.......2007-01-29
I am a big fan of organic gardening, but I just can't agree with the other posters here who've raved about this book. I'm glad it's not the first one I've read on organic gardening or on roses. If it had been, I think I would have given up! Wilde makes it sound entirely too complicated, especially for the typical home gardener. Also, not that many roses are featured, and information on them (fragrance, etc differs from what I've read elsewhere and/or experienced in my own garden. An OK book, but be sure you read others and go to the excellent site help me find dot com to get some perspective. Visit local gardens to see what does well. And don't be afraid to experiment in your own garden, keeping it simple as much as possible. If you 1.) choose roses known to do well in your area, 2.) plant them properly making sure they have plenty of sun, food and water, and 3.) cultivate them cleanly, keeping their bases free of fallen leaves and debris - the job is mostly done. ENJOY YOUR ROSES!
Growing Roses Organically.......2005-02-10
This book is an outstanding resource not only for rose gardeners, but also for gardeners in general. I learned all sorts of useful facts about growing plants organically. The book is beautifully written and easy to understand. The illustrations are excellent.
This book is attractive enough to be given as a gift.
Wilde has given us a treasure:
her vast experience and great love of gardening.
Great instructions and info, plus beautiful pictures.......2003-02-22
This is a practical, pretty, and highly useful book for anyone who wants to smell the roses, especially in climates less temperate than the west coast.
The number of roses included is far from encyclopaedic, but for the roses Ms Wilde does include, she reports thoroughly on on their disease susceptibility, growth habit, hardiness, fragrance, and more. In nearly all cases, a gorgeous color photo accompanies. In fact, stripped of its useful information, this book would still be a fine buy for its large color photos. Before the gallery of roses, you'll find clear and helpful instructions about how to prepare for planting and how to accomplish the actual planting. Although the emphasis obviously centers on organic methods, this is a fine general reference on growing roses.
The book itself seems reasonably well put together. I haven't spent months poring over it yet, but I do not have the early feeling of dread when a poorly glued book seems ready to fall apart in my hands. Probably part of the reason is that the book is large enough to be helpful, but not so large that its very size works to break it apart. The format, in other words, allows for some large and luscious eye candy, but it is not as big as many modern illustrated gardening books which should really come with their own stands.
Photographs, clear drawings, and lucid instructions and descriptions make this book a pleasure to own and and treasure to use.
Direct, simple instructions and details.......2002-07-14
Growing Roses Organically: Your Guide To Creating An Easy-Care Garden Full Of Fragrance And Beauty by garden designer and horticulturalist expert Barbara Wilde is a fabulous, full-color guide to creating a beautiful organic garden tailored to the rose-lover's tastes. Direct, simple instructions and details on a wide variety of roses enhance this superb reference which is ideal for gardeners of all skill levels. From the basics of getting started; through issues such as watering, fertilizing, pruning, disease and insect infestation; to the details of designing rose gardens (included the Mixed Border; Wild Gardens, Hedging, and Wildlife Gardens), Barbara Wilde writes with an accessibility that is as informative as it is easy-to-apply. Of special note is chapter ten, "A Gallery of Roses". If you aspiring to growing a garden of roses, begin your preparations by giving Barbara Wilde's Growing Roses Organically a careful reading!

Book Description
This volume deals with historical and exegetical problems of the Abraham story in the book of Genesis. The first part describes the results of archaeological investigations at Hebron and Mamre in Southern Palestine including remarks on the status of the province of Judah in the first millennium BCE, especially in the Babylonian and Persian period. The second part presents exegetical comments on Genesis chapter 13 and 18. The concluding part of the volume relates the historical and exegetical aspects. The Abraham story is interpreted as a product of the Judaean people of the Babylonian and Persian Period.

Book Description
The world, we are told, is becoming increasingly global in its economy, culture and outlook. Yet nationalism enables marginal groups to assert their identity against dominance by cosmopolitan centers.
Literary Formations provides an insight into the paradoxical process through its detailed examination of post-colonial literatures and post-colonial literary theory. Anne Brewster, writing from a feminist perspective, introduces the issue of gender into a field of study that has been widely dominated by questions of race and nationalism.
